The Week Ahead: The division rings in the New Year with a fight between middleweight contender Marco Antonio Rubio and undefeated but completely untested Dominican Wilson Santana.  Rubio is obviously the classier and more experienced fighter, but he’s pretty significantly the smaller guy.  Rubio is still heavily favored, but it’s at least a little interesting.

I’ll start with the big news.  The Championship bout between Champion Jean Pascal and former Champion Bernard Hopkins ended with a draw.  Pascal put Hopkins down twice in the first three rounds, but Hopkins came back to sweep probably the next six.  Hopkins (with the aid of sycophant Jim Grey) cried robbery after the fight, and many fans that are severely biased or lack knowledge are backing him up.  Make no mistake, Hopkins did get the best of the overall fight, knockdowns notwithstanding, but scored by rounds as fights always are, I had it a draw and given the rounds that were close and the knockdowns, any score between 116-112 for either man was entirely reasonable.

On Friday, Tavoris Cloud won a lackluster decision in a lackluster fight against a lackluster opponent in Fulgencio Zuniga.  The following day, German prospect Dustin Dirks shut out sub-.500 journeyman Alpay Kobal over 8 rounds.  And on Sunday, twice-beaten prospect Alexei Kuziemski rebounded from his stoppage loss to Dmitri Sukhotski by stopping another Dmitri, the hilariously bad Protkunas, in round 3.

So what does this all mean for the rankings?  Well it’s difficult for me to put Hopkins ahead of Chad Dawson because Dawson’s body of work is frankly head and shoulders ahead of Hopkins’ in the last 5 years.  He’s been fighting only top 4 contenders, and beat them all until Pascal.  But on the other hand, a draw versus the Champion means you’re as good as the champion, right?  It may just be that he had a better style matchup in his favor or that a lesser version of Pascal showed up for the fight with him, but regardless of the reason it seems the most appropriate thing to rank Hopkins at #1, dropping Dawson to #2 for the first time in a long time and Tavoris Cloud to #3.

For comparison, here are the current Ring Magazine Ratings:
Champ: Jean Pascal
1) Bernard Hopkins
2) Tavoris Cloud
3) Chad Dawson
4) Glen Johnson
5) Nathan Cleverly
6) Adrian Diaconu

The Week Ahead: Merry Christmas!

Light Heavyweight: 2010, Dec 13-19

Alejandro Lakatos withdrew from his scheduled fight with British contender Nathan Cleverly, but in a rare turn of events, he was replaced on very short notice by a more relevant fighter, Nadjib Mohammedi, the French fringe contender that put himself easily within the top 30 light heavyweights with his recent stoppage of an overweight Djamel Selini.  Despite having only a couple days to prepare, Mohammedi apparently put up a solid fight, winning at least 3 or 4 rounds in the 12 round fight, but could not overcome Cleverly.  Despite the closeness of the affair, this adds a pretty decent name to Cleverly’s resume, but it’s not enough to advance him past #5 Gabriel Campillo, a more accomplished fighter who has a win over then-#9 Hugo Garay and has a win and a laughable loss in which he nevertheless dominated against current #9 Beibut Shumenov.

On that same card, fellow undefeated Brit Tony Bellew picked up a nice victory over gatekeeper Ovill McKenzie in what appears to have been an entertaining fight.  Bellew rose from knockdowns in the 1st and 2nd rounds to knock down and then stop McKenzie in the 8th.  Apparently the stoppage was very premature, but it does sound like Bellew had turned the fight around by that time.  This effort is enough to get Bellew into the top 20.  Upon further review of the last few rated fighters, it is determined that despite being rated #18 last week, Karo Murat is the best candidate to exit the rankings, as the wins at this weight that previously earned him a rating were, upon further review, against overrated prospects.  Bellew debuts at #19, leapfrogging both Murat and #20 Plotinsky (who retains his ranking), while Danny McIntosh moves up to #18 due to Murat’s exit.

For comparison, here are the current Ring Magazine Ratings:

3) Glen Johnson
4) Bernard Hopkins
5) Nathan Cleverly
6) Adrian Diaconu

The Week Ahead: Friday: #2 Contender Tavoris Cloud stays busy against good journeyman Fulgencio Zuniga.  Zuniga was a fringe contender at Middleweight early in his career, and briefly a real force at 168 after stopping Victor Oganov 2007, but has fought only two hilarious mismatches since being stopped by Lucian Bute in March of ’09, and has never had a legitimate light heavyweight fight.  He should be no match for a bruiser like Cloud above his natural weight.

Saturday: The Championship of the World is on the line, as Jean Pascal defends his title for the first time against nearly 46 year-old but still 3rd-ranked Bernard Hopkins, a legend and former champion.  Pascal is a bit wild and hasn’t shown lately that he can fight well on the inside, while Hopkins is a master technician who will benefit if he can drag Pascal into an inside fight or a slow-paced boxing match.  Hopkins also looked quite bad in beating current #10 but badly faded Roy Jones, and in decisioning fringe contender Enrique Ornelas, and one has to wonder if he has enough physical tools left at his age to compete with the flawed but young, strong, and quick Pascal.  In addition, the fight is in Quebec, where the crowd will be riotously partial to the Champion.  If Hopkins can overcome the odds, however, he will become the oldest fighter to win any major belt, as well as a legitimate championship.  George Foreman was just over a month younger when he knocked out Michael Moorer to win the legitimate Heavyweight Championship in 1994, though he defended the title for another 3 years thereafter.

On the Huck-Lebedev undercard in Germany, German prospect Dustin Dirks treads water against losing journeyman Alpay Kobal.

Sunday: Formerly rated prospect Alexei Kuziemski looks to rebound from a stoppage loss to Dmitri Sukhotski by fighting awful journeyman Dmitri Protkunas less than two months later in Poland.

Joel Casey- essentially a journeyman who upset decent fighter Tim Bell 4 months ago- had a weak opponent in Kashif Mumtaz Friday in Australia.  Casey was in the process of shutting Mumtaz out when the latter simply quit in his corner after the 4th round.

Saturday, Ukrainian prospect Alexander Cherviak shocked much more experienced prospect Vitali Rusal with an 8-round unanimous decision on Saturday.  However, Cherviak came in 5.75 pounds over the light heavyweight limit and thus was effectively a Danny Green-sized cruiserweight (or Dannyweight).  Rusal didn’t quite make 175 either at 175.75, but the extra 5 pounds Cherviak brought with him was nevertheless an unfair advantage, and thus Cherviak won’t benefit from the fight in my rankings, especially since Rusal wouldn’t be considered a notable cruiserweight.

The Week Ahead: Saturday: British undefeated contender Nathan Cleverly takes on Alejandro Lakatos- a one-time fringe contender that hasn’t really done much since taking 2 years off between 2005 and 2007.  On the same card, prospect Tony Bellew fights rugged gatekeeper Ovill McKenzie (winner of the Prizefighter Cruiserweight tournament in 2009) in a battle of two up-and-coming British fighters that have made a little bit of a name for themselves a division to the north.

The Week Ahead: Friday in Australia, up-and-down gatekeeper Joel Casey- who made his name by edging Tim Bell in August, returns to the ring against weak journeyman Kashif Mumtaz, who has been stopped more often than he’s won.

On Saturday, Kenyan gatekeeper Kariz Kariuki battles Randy Griffin in a rare show in China.  Griffin was a serious contender at middleweight, but has been off more than two years since dropping a fairly close decision to Felix Sturm in the summer of 2008.  All in all, this is an interesting matchup.  Also Saturday, prospect Vitali Rusal, whose only loss was a stoppage at cruiserweight to Marco Huck, will fight completely unproven prospect Alexander Cherviak, who is coming off his first career loss to fellow unproven prospect Salambek Baysangurov, in the Ukraine.

Former lineal Champion Zsolt Erdei (whose reign, by the way, was such a joke that the Ring supplanted him with Roy Jones) won a decision over complete non-entity Samson Onyango in New Jersey.  It marked only the 3rd time Erdei fought outside Hungary and Germany, and the first since 2002.  The bout was worthless except that it technically made Erdei an active light heavyweight again, prompting me to take a look at his overall record to see if it still merits a rating.  Erdei’s opponents even while defending the title were more characteristic of guys that would be underdogs in EBU fights than in guys that deserved to fight for the legitimate championship, and his best wins are over 5 years old and consequently aren’t going to get consideration.  Nevertheless, with six relatively notable wins in the last half-decade, including one over Thomas Ulrich, who was at least a solid fringe contender at the time, it’s hard not to rank him ahead of a guy like Gayrat Ahmedov who, while he’s got a very recent win almost as good as any Erdei has in five years, has only really beaten one good gatekeeper so far.  Accordingly, Erdei takes his place at #16, just behind Hugo Garay.  Garay appears to be fading a bit, and was beaten by Erdei twice over five years ago (albeit in controversial fashion), but despite two recent losses he still holds a victory over Juergen Braehmer- better than anything Erdei has done at 175 since they met in the ring- and a more convincing decision over common opponent Yuri Barashian.

The day before Erdei’s return, Andrzej Fonfara knocked out fellow prospect Anthony Doughty in the first round in Chicago.  Fonfara probably isn’t headed for the Championship, with losses to two mediocre opponents, but showed that he’s at least competent with the quick stoppage.  Also that day, 168 pound contender and Erdei’s Hungarian countryman Karoly Balzsay took 4 of the scheduled 6 to knock out Misa Nikolic, who had been on a six-fight winning streak against poor opposition since opening his career with eight consecutive losses against mostly nobody special.

Erdei’s return bumps down everybody rated 16 and below last week one place each, and forces out Polish prospect Dawid Kostecki for the time being.

On Friday in Poland, prospect Pawel Glazewski won a 10-round decision over decent journeyman Tomas Adamek, but lost two or three rounds in the process.  Not a terrible showing considering Adamek is a decent fighter, but not really an indication of a future champion, either.

Prospect and former rated contender Vyacheslav Uzelkov of Ukraine defeated green journeyman George Tevdorashvili, but evidently has not fully rebounded from his one-sided loss to Beibut Shumenov this summer.  The scorecards indicate a pretty close fight with a guy who has no busy fighting close with a fighter of Uzelkov’s supposed caliber.

The Week Ahead:  Friday features two notables in action.  168 pound contender Karoly Balzsay moves up a few pounds and takes on a completely pointless opponent in 6-8 Misa Nikolic in Hamburg, and prospect Andrzej Fonfara takes on less proven prospect Anthony Doughty in Chicago.

On Saturday, former lineal champion Zsolt Erdei returns to 175 after vacating his claim to the title to fight for a Cruiserweight belt which he has now given up a year later.  He takes on a journeyman named Samson Onyango whose record is a ridiculously inflated 20-6.  Chances are this Samson comes into the ring without his hair.  Even with the soft choice of opponent, Erdei will now become an active light heavyweight again, and thus a win will probably return him to the rankings based solely on his past accomplishments.

THE WEEK AHEAD: Happy New Year!

A borderline robbery took place in Germany this past week, where German citizen #2 Marco Huck got the split-decision nod over Russian #6 contender Denis Lebedev.  I scored the bout 116-112 for Lebedev, and considering rounds that were truly up for grabs, 115-113 Lebedev would not have been unreasonable.  There were a few fairly close rounds that I thought were pretty clear Lebedev rounds, but which could have conceivably gone to Huck if one were stretching.  115-113 Huck, which was the score of 2 of the 3 judges represents a pair of cards on which the judges were probably slightly biased and gave every benefit of the doubt to the titlist and home fighter, who fought off the back foot for the entire fight and reportedly had his rib cracked by the Russian.  This was certainly a hometown/champion’s decision, but I have to stop just short of calling it an absolute robbery.  Would I like to substitute my own card for that of the judges in this case?  Yes.  Would the interests of justice be served by my doing so?  Probably.  But on the other hand, I can’t go doing that in every case, or my ratings might start looking kinda funny to the boxing world at large.  Accordingly, I’m treating the official decision here with minimal deference, which essentially rates the fight as if it were a draw.  Marco Huck had proven that he deserved the #2 spot very clearly before the fight, so it doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to drop him.  It seems far more likely that Denis Lebedev is simply a whole lot better than #6, and thus he moves up to #3 on the strength of his performance, while Afolabi, Wlodarczyk, and Hernandez each fall one spot as a result.

On the undercard, Yoan Pablo Hernandez was way too much for Ali Ismailov, who despite being the same size appeared 20 pounds or more lighter in the ring.  Ismailov didn’t appear hurt, but bounced out of the ring after retreating to the ropes following a solid body punch, and was counted out.  Ismailov simply isn’t a strong enough opponent for Hernandez to maintain his spot, and thus he is forced down by Lebedev even after the easy win.

In lesser action, fringe contender Rachid El Hadak beat soft journeyman J.J. Ojuederie on points over 6 rounds.  A truly inconsequential performance for a guy that is only treading water.

THE WEEK AHEAD: One of the biggest fights the division has seen since Adamek-Cunningham will go down in Germany this Saturday when #2 Marco Huck takes on #6 Denis Lebedev of Russia in a fight that will have huge implications in the top 5- possibly even putting the #1 spot at risk.  On the undercard, #5 Yoan Pablo Hernandez fights gatekeeper Ali Ismailov of Azerbaijan.

In France, local fringe contender Rachid El Hadak- who has been fighting mainly nobodies since his upset win over Merick Roberge in 2008 catapulted him into contention- continues the pattern by fighting mediocre journeyman J.J. Ojuederie .
