Cruiserweight: 2010, Dec 20-26

A borderline robbery took place in Germany this past week, where German citizen #2 Marco Huck got the split-decision nod over Russian #6 contender Denis Lebedev.  I scored the bout 116-112 for Lebedev, and considering rounds that were truly up for grabs, 115-113 Lebedev would not have been unreasonable.  There were a few fairly close rounds that I thought were pretty clear Lebedev rounds, but which could have conceivably gone to Huck if one were stretching.  115-113 Huck, which was the score of 2 of the 3 judges represents a pair of cards on which the judges were probably slightly biased and gave every benefit of the doubt to the titlist and home fighter, who fought off the back foot for the entire fight and reportedly had his rib cracked by the Russian.  This was certainly a hometown/champion’s decision, but I have to stop just short of calling it an absolute robbery.  Would I like to substitute my own card for that of the judges in this case?  Yes.  Would the interests of justice be served by my doing so?  Probably.  But on the other hand, I can’t go doing that in every case, or my ratings might start looking kinda funny to the boxing world at large.  Accordingly, I’m treating the official decision here with minimal deference, which essentially rates the fight as if it were a draw.  Marco Huck had proven that he deserved the #2 spot very clearly before the fight, so it doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to drop him.  It seems far more likely that Denis Lebedev is simply a whole lot better than #6, and thus he moves up to #3 on the strength of his performance, while Afolabi, Wlodarczyk, and Hernandez each fall one spot as a result.

On the undercard, Yoan Pablo Hernandez was way too much for Ali Ismailov, who despite being the same size appeared 20 pounds or more lighter in the ring.  Ismailov didn’t appear hurt, but bounced out of the ring after retreating to the ropes following a solid body punch, and was counted out.  Ismailov simply isn’t a strong enough opponent for Hernandez to maintain his spot, and thus he is forced down by Lebedev even after the easy win.

In lesser action, fringe contender Rachid El Hadak beat soft journeyman J.J. Ojuederie on points over 6 rounds.  A truly inconsequential performance for a guy that is only treading water.
