#20 Lateef Kayode got a stiffer-than-expected test from journeyman Ed Perry on ShoBox this week.  Perry came to fight, and had some live power that he was able to hit the prospect with from time to time, but Kayode took the shots well, did excellent work to the body, used his long arms well, and ultimately proved to skilled and physically powerful for Perry, who despite a good effort probably didn’t win a round en route to a 6th round knockout loss after taking a knee following a mean body punch from the Nigerian.  Perry showed himself to be a good opponent, but hasn’t done nearly enough in his career for Kayode to advance in the rankings from the win.

THE WEEK AHEAD:  Happy New Year!

Heavyweight: 2010, Dec 20-26

Posted in Heavyweight, Rankings on December 29, 2010 by danboxing
In Miami on Friday, Odlanier Solis looked to be in much better shape than in recent fights and stayed active throughout against a defensive but equally active Ray Austin.  Solis controlled the action despite the consistent pawing jab of Austin, and wore the older man down.  In the 10th round, Austin was holding on for dear life due to fatigue and the consistent hard punching of Solis, and was warned for excessive holding before a hold at the bell sent both men into a tangled mess with the ropes.  After the referee untangled the men, Austin (appearing to want out of the fight) hit Solis behind the head several seconds after the bell had sounded, and the referee disqualified him.  This should be looked upon as something similar to a TKO for Solis, since Austin’s actions appeared to be largely prompted by how badly Solis had him hurt.  It is only the second significant win in Solis’ professional career, and it prompts the Cuban’s meteoric rise into the top 10 at #10.  He is now the mandatory challenger for Vitali Klitschko’s WBC title.  As for Austin, he takes a modest tumble to Solis’ old #17 spot.  His late-2008 blowout of then-credible Andrew Golota- and to a lesser extent his 4 1/2 year-old draw with former titlist Sultan Ibragimov- keeps him marginally ahead of young gun Kubrat Pulev at #18 despite a lack of recent success.

In other action, mammoth British prospect Tyson Fury convincingly beat late replacement Zack Page, a journeyman who only fights the best.  Despite losing 60% of his fights, Page has been known to pick off the occasional prospect and usually puts up a good fight to those he does not.  That being the case, Fury passed a minor test with this victory and at least proved that he’s a prospect that bears watching.

#16 Francesco Pianeta returned from skin cancer in fine fashion, knocking out very weak and very old journeyman Mike Middleton inside of one.  On the same card, #18 Kubrat Pulev shut out faded former fringe contender Paolo Vidoz over 8 rounds, and #3 Alexander Povetkin faced gatekeeper Nicolai Firtha, a big club fighter with painfully slow hands who attempted to fight him as a boxer anyway.  Despite Firtha’s limitations, he represented Povetkin’s most credible opponent since he fought Jason Estrada more than a year and a half ago- before Teddy Atlas became his trainer.  Povetkin didn’t exactly impress and lost 2 of 8 rounds on my card and a total of 3 on the 3 official cards, but his mediocre win is fairly excusable considering he fought the majority of the fight with a broken hand.  Even so, the fact that he hasn’t fought a top 15 sort of fighter since more or less earning his current ranking nearly 3 years ago by defeating Eddie Chambers makes dropping him below Chambers a real consideration.  If anybody behind him in the top 10 had been making any noise at all lately, his spot would not be safe at this point.  Fortunately for him, the rest of the top 10 have been fighting only two classes of opponents: Klitschkos and journeymen.  Neither is a good option when it comes to advancing in the rankings.

#9 Danny Green controlled the action and won a fairly comfortable decision over #12 B.J. Flores in Australia in what was a rather tedious and largely tactical fight.  Flores, the bigger man, frequently walked Green down to the ropes, but appeared very reluctant to pull the trigger.  When he did, Green countered with more accurate and apparently harder punches.  Green gets ample credit for finally fighting a real cruiserweight, and one with some skill who didn’t literally lay down for him, but he ultimately does not leapfrog anyone in the rankings because beating Flores really just confirmed what we thought we might have learned about his ability in the Roy Jones fight, and especially because Guillermo Jones has a #5-ranked cruiserweight on his record, which tops Green’s short resume at 200.  Flores, on the other side, tumbles in the rankings- not because there’s any shame in losing to Danny Green, but rather because of his inactivity prior to that and the fact that his loss coupled with that inactivity means that by the time of his next fight, he will likely not have beaten anyone of consequence in over two years.  For this reason, he falls 1 slot to #13.  Wayne Braithwaite, whose own inactivity and recent loss make him rather undeserving of a promotion, nevertheless moves up to claim the 11 spot on the basis of his 2008 knockout of Yoan Hernandez, and Steve Herelius moves up to #12.  Aside from the above, everybody ranked #6 or below last week also moves up one position, since Zsolt Erdei has moved back down to 175 and has not fought at Cruiserweight for a year, and accordingly leaves the rankings.  Lateef Kayode re-enters at #20, narrowly beating out Alexander Alexeev (who has more quality wins, but who is coming off a loss and is less active).

Earlier that night on the Green-Flores undercard, former prospect Shane Cameron of New Zealand, a career heavyweight, cut weight and took on gatekeeper Anthony McCracken, winning a decision over 12 rounds.  Due to the thin nature of the division, a knockout or even a wider decision might have earned Cameron a ranking, but as it stands he has likely entered the top 25 after just his first fight under 200.

Rounding out the week at Cruiserweight, #17 Pawel Kolodziej knocked out journeyman John McClain in the 3rd.  Yippie-kai-yay!

#15 Enad Licina defeated good journeyman Felix Cora, Jr. on the undercard of Haye-Harrison in Manchester, but was maybe a bit underwhelming in doing so.  I didn’t see the fight, but he lost four rounds on two of the three cards.

West Virginia prospect Bobby Thomas, Jr. stopped 3-8 nobody Julius Jackson in the 6th and final round in his home state.  No real story here.

THE WEEK AHEAD: On Wednesday, #9 Danny Green fights his first full-size cruiserweight in #12 B.J. Flores.  Flores has been treading water for over a year, and could really use a win to kick-start his promising career again.  Green could use a win as well to show that he’s a real cruiserweight contender and not just a blown up light heavyweight pretender.  On the undercard, gatekeepers Shane Cameron and Anthony McCracken go head-to-head.  These are both mid-range guys, but good things happen for winners of such fights, and the winner may very well see a ranking.

Then on Saturday, #17 Pawel Kolodziej takes on halfway alright journeyman John McClain of the US for something called the WBC interim Baltic Cruiserweight title.  And to think, I didn’t know that the US was a Baltic country.  I have half a mind to offer five bucks to the first person who can name me the NON-interim WBC Baltic cruiserweight champion, but realistically, how could I tell if you were right or not?

Unfortunately the World Championship fight between Champion Wladimir Klitschko and #12 contender Dereck Chisora that was set for Saturday was called off on Wednesday, with Klitschko claiming an abdominal injury.  Before the end of the day, it became clear that Klitschko was now pushing for a fight with David Haye, who had himself pulled out of an earlier fight with an unconfirmed injury.  This looks a little fishy and certainly unprofessional for the Champion, who obviously stands to make a lot more money by backing out on Chisora if the other fight can be made, and it appears that Wlad had an opt-out built in to the contract.  The fight with Haye is obviously a more compelling matchup, but you have to feel sorry for Chisora, who is potentially being hung out to dry by the Champion in favor of his countryman Haye, who frankly has proven to be a clear coward and liar to this point where the Klitschkos are concerned.

Now on to fights that actually did happen: on Tuesday, 45-year-old former contender Oliver McCall won a split decision over 37-year-old former contender Fres Oquendo.  Oquendo had enough credibility left pre-fight to make this a significant win for McCall.  He’s obviously not going to win the title at this stage of his career, nor will he earn a ranking on this alone, but he is surprisingly close to the top 20 after this opportunistic win.  Oquendo pretty much falls off the map with the loss.

#9 Tomasz Adamek stopped strong club fighter Vinny Maddalone in 5, proving once again that he is a higher-class fighter than a limited club fighter or old man.  I’m personally tired of these goofy matches of his, and of everyone overrating him based on them and on his questionable victory over Arreola.  How anyone outside his family would buy the pay-per-view is beyond me.

THE WEEK AHEAD:  Another pretty active week in the division.  On Friday in Miami, #17 Odlanier Solis finally attempts to kick his career into gear, fighting #14 Ray Austin in a match that is huge in the division and will serve as an eliminator to fight Vitali Klitschko.  The winner will more or less have earned the shot, I must say.

Then on Saturday, British prospect Tyson Fury battles Missouri journeyman Galen Brown on the Pascal-Hopkins undercard in Canada, while a single Berlin card features three top-20 heavies.  #3 Alexander Povetkin fights good Ohio club fighter Nicolai Firtha, #18 Kubrat Pulev fights Paolo Vidoz- a former fringe contender that has lost his last three and 5 of his last 6 against varying levels of competition- and #16 Francesco Pianeta returns to the ring after more than a year’s absence and a victory over skin cancer to fight Mike Middleton- a 42-year-old who’s been knocked out more than he’s won.

#18 Jean Marc Mormeck was able to edge #19 Timur Ibragimov by split decision on Tuesday.  I can’t find any video to evaluate what I think of the split scoring (which I like to do in controversial matches before rating based on them), and so I’ll have to treat it exactly as the judges did- a very close decision and a win for Mormeck.  The major shake-up it causes in the ratings belie the closeness of the contest, however.  The reason for this is simply how little there is separating numbers roughly 13-20 in the rankings.  Mormeck, with his second consecutive close win over borderline top-20 opposition, vaults all the way to #13.  Ibragimov remains at #19, but is passed by former #20 Kubrat Pulev, who lands at #18 not so much because Ibragimov’s effort wasn’t befitting his station, but rather because Pulev was basically in a tossup scenario with him to begin with.

It has now been so long since Alexander Dimitrenko had a quality win (November 2008) that his career has to be considered stalled.  He was hanging on to his position recently basically because he had a credible fight coming up with fringe contender Albert Sosnowski this past Saturday, but he fainted in the dressing room and the fight was called off at the last minute.  I give him full benefit of the doubt for having a legitimate illness or whatever the case may be, but there are other fighters with just as good wins as the Russian can boast, and they are much more recent in some cases.  Accordingly, Dimitrenko topples from the rankings.  If he reschedules the fight and beats Sosnowski, he’ll no doubt come back stronger than ever, but I just can’t let him take up space anymore in the meantime.  Dimitrenko’s exit makes room for German prospect Edmund Gerber, whose signature win thus far was in January over Rene Dettweiler, to debut at #20.

In less significant action, Czech fringe prospect Ondrej Pala stopped terrible journeyman Ergin Solmaz (who’s been stopped more than 3 times as often as he’s won) in 3 on Friday.  On Saturday in Schwerin, #8 Juan Carlos Gomez won by predictable 4th round stoppage over sub-.500 journeyman Harold Sconiers, and Manuel Charr raised serious questions about his career potential by escaping with a majority decision against Zack Page, who is a losing fighter but nevertheless serves a measuring stick for up-and-coming fighters because he fights seemingly all of them and sometimes picks one off.

THE WEEK AHEAD:  A series of interesting fights are spread out over the next week.  On Tuesday, former contender and current gatekeeper Fres Oquendo fights 45-year-old Oliver McCall in a clash of aging/aged name fighters.  McCall hasn’t been a top-shelf contender since about 2003, but still hasn’t suffered any real embarrassing losses since then.  Oquendo is in about the same boat, and came very close to beating current #13 Jean Marc Mormeck this spring.  He is “only” 37.  Despite the fact that both guys are graybeards, Oquendo at least is still a credible opponent that can help build a ranking.  Unfortunately for him, the same probably can’t quite be said for McCall, but this is no easy victory for Oquendo, either.

Tomasz Adamek continues to cash paychecks while not really proving he’s a legitimate top heavyweight contender when he fights journeyman Vinny Maddalone Thursday in Newark on a minor PPV card.  Maddalone is a strong guy, but is at a notable deficit in terms of skill.  His high point was knocking out undefeated prospect Shannon Miller before being stopped by Brian Minto in his next fight.  Even at his best, he has never been the type of fighter a top fighter could credibly build a ranking upon.

The biggest fight is of course the World Heavyweight Championship match on Saturday between Champion Wladimir Klitschko and #12 Dereck Chisora of Great Britain.  Chisora hasn’t proven he belongs at Klitschko’s level, but he’s on a short list of contenders that have not yet proven that they do not.

Robert Helenius won impressively by 2nd-round TKO over veteran Attila Levin on the Froch-Abraham undercard Saturday in Finland.  He won’t get a lot of credit for the win because we don’t really know if Levin has anything left, but he has been a tough customer in years past, and theoretically could have given a solid prospect a tough night.

THE WEEK AHEAD: In a fight that could have huge implications for the lower half of the rankings, #19 Timur Ibragimov battles #18 Jean Marc Mormeck on Thursday.

On Friday, Czech Ondrej Pala, who is somewhere between a prospect and a gatekeeper, will destroy pretty terrible journeyman Ergin Solmaz (4-31) in Prague.

And on Saturday, #8 Juan Carlos Gomez continues to waste the waning years of his career by fighting sub-.500 journeyman Harold Sconiers in Schwerin.  On the same card, prospect Manuel Charr, a Syrian born in Lebanon and living in Germany, will fight journeyman Zack Page, a popular victim among prospects and fringe contenders.

One quick note:  The anniversary of Francesco Pianeta’s last fight is coming up this week, but he will not be automatically removed for inactivity if he fails to sign a fight this week, since his absence from the ring has been due to his more important bout with skin cancer.  His resume may, however, be reexamined in comparison to his peers to determine if any of them have done better work more recently.

On Friday, Ruslan Chagaev and Denis Boytsov both took care of their journeyman opponents in Hamburg.  Chagaev actually had some difficulty with Travis Walker, losing 2 or 3 of the 8 rounds on all three cards, while Boytsov had no such trouble with Mike Sheppard, knocking him down four times before the full 10-count was given in the 2nd round.  Manuel Charr forced journeyman Robert Hawkins to retire after round 5, and Chazz Witherspoon, who always beats mediocre-to-good competition but has fallen short in his only two attempts to step up- made (mediocre) journeyman Alexis Mejias quit on his stool after 4.  Tony Thompson rounded out the heavyweight action by stopping aged journeyman Paul Marinaccio in the 4th.

THE WEEK AHEAD: The only thing cooking this week is #14 Robert Helenius taking on 34-3 journeyman Attila Levin in Helsinki on the Froch-Abraham undercard.  This may be more of a test for Helenius than it appears.  Levin was a fighter of note until 2004-5 when he was stopped in back-to-back fights by Jeremy Williams and Nikolai Valuev and then took 3 years off.  He hasn’t fought anyone on Helenius’ level since then, but was once a serious prospect, owning a win over Ray Austin, among others.
