Nothing new to report.

Dan’s Top 20
Champ: Andre Ward (18-152-152)
Last Fight: 12/17/2011- UD12 #2 Carl Froch
Next Fight: Unknown
A little bit of a disappointing batch of initial rhetoric coming out of the Ward camp.  While Bute says he is willing to travel to Oakland to fight Ward, Ward himself seems more interested in Kessler.  Normally I wouldn’t knock a Champ-#3 contender matchup, but we’ve already got that one figured out.  He’s also said he’s willing to fight J.C. Chavez in Mexico.
1) Lucian Bute (18-314-314)
Last Fight: 11/5/2012- UD12 #13 Glen Johnson
Next Fight: 5/26/2012- vs. #2 Carl Froch
Despite Showtime rejecting the fight, Bute will face Froch in Nottingham on May 26.  Epix will likely televise in the US.
2) Carl Froch (18-305-305)
Last Fight: 12/17/2011- L(UD12) vs. #1 Andre Ward
Next Fight: 5/26/2012- vs. #1 Lucian Bute
See Bute’s notes, above.
3) Mikkel Kessler (18-384-384)
Last Fight: 6/4/2011- TKO6 Mehdi Bouadla (UNR)
Next Fight: 5/19/2012- vs. Allan Green (UNR) (at LHW)
I’m still not clear on why Kessler and Stieglitz is off, but Kessler is now set to fight Allan Green at 175 for some reason.  The fight will be in Copenhagen.
4) Robert Stieglitz (18-138-138)
Last Fight: 1/14/2012- UD12 Henry Weber (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Stieglitz has now been canceled on twice in a row, as the Kessler fight was deep-sixed for still-unclear reasons, and now George Groves has withdrawn with an injury.
5) Thomas Oosthuizen (18-46-94)
Last Fight: 3/3/2012- TKO6 Serge Yannick (UNR)
Next Fight: 4/27/2012- vs. Marcus Johnson (UNR)
Prospective opponent Maxim Vlasov was injured in a car accident, and so Oosthuizen will be fighting fringe contender/prospect Marcus Johnson, instead.  April 27, on ShoBox.
6) Arthur Abraham (18-130-130)
Last Fight: 3/31/2012- UD12 Piotr Wilczewski (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Abraham has proven that he’s still above the fringe contender level despite his struggles late in the Super Six.  It might be time for him to start fighting top-10 types again, even if they are carefully chosen.
7) Adonis Stevenson (9-19-19)
Last Fight: 2/18/2012- KO1 #18 Jesus Gonzales
Next Fight: 4/20/2012- vs. Noe Gonzalez (UNR)
Stevenson continues his string of fringe contenders as opponents when he battles Uraguayan prospect Noe Gonzalez on Friday Night Fights in mid-May.
8) Dimitri Sartison (9-90-94)
Last Fight: 11/12/2011- W(MD8) vs. Arturs Kulikauskis (UNR) (at LHW)
Next Fight: 4/21/2012- vs. Karoly Balzsay (UNR)
Sartison is taking a step back up to the fringe contender level in April.  If his knee isn’t close to 100% (which it didn’t appear to be against journeyman Kulikauskis), Balzsay is the right level of opponent to capitalize.
9) Peter Quillin (9-51-51)
Last Fight: 11/5/2011- TKO6 Craig McEwan (UNR) (at MW)
Next Fight: 5/26/2012- vs. Winky Wright (UNR) (at MW?)
After it originally appeared a no-go, Quillin’s proposed fight with inactive former champ Winky Wright is now on for the Tarver-Kayode undercard on Showtime.
10) Sakio Bika (18-18-263)
Last Fight: 12/3/2011- RTD3 Alfredo Contreras (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Avoided removal by the skin of his teeth, but he’s going to start plummeting any month now if he doesn’t beat someone decent.
11) Andy Lee (18-58)
Last Fight: 3/10/2012- TKO2 Saul Duran (UNR)
Next Fight: 6/16/2012- vs. MW #? Julio Cesar Chavez, Jr. (at MW)
Lee gets the fight he’s been waiting for, against the best opponent of his career in Julio Cesar Chavez, Jr.  The fight will be in El Paso in mid-June.
12) Anthony Dirrell (18-20)
Last Fight: 12/2/2011- TKO4 Renan St. Juste (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Finally stepped up to the fringe contender level against St. Juste.  Verdict: not too shabby.
13) Mouhamed Ali Ndiaye (18-23)
Last Fight: 11/11/2011- TKO12 Andrea Di Luisa (UNR)
Next Fight: 5/26/2012- vs. Unknown Opponent
Ndiaye will be back in action in late May.  No opponent yet.
14) Glen Johnson (18-76)
Last Fight: 11/5/2011- L(UD12) vs. #3 Lucian Bute
Next Fight: Unknown
The Bute fight was the only one of Johnson’s recent career that wasn’t really close.  Bute is certainly a top fighter, but it could be that the Road Warrior is starting to wind down a bit.
15) Bryan Vera (18-63)
Last Fight: 10/1/2011- L(UD10) vs. #15 Andy Lee
Next Fight: 4/21/2012- vs. Taronze Washington (UNR)
Vera will fight no-name journeyman Taronze Washignton on April 21.
16) Librado Andrade (18-34)
Last Fight: 8/27/2011- TKO3 Matt O’Brien (UNR)
Next Fight: 4/21/2012- vs. Rowland Bryant (UNR) (at LHW)
Andrade has finally got an opponent for his stay-busy date on April 21: journeyman Rowland Bryant.  This will apparently be a light heavyweight fight.
17) Aaron Pryor, Jr. (18-50)
Last Fight: 12/10/2011- L(TKO9) vs. Adonis Stevenson (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Well, it’s clear that he can’t play with at least one of the big boys.  Every division needs fringe contenders, though, and that looks like Pryor’s lane for the time being.
18) Jesus Gonzales (18-41)
Last Fight: 2/18/2012- L(KO1) vs. #9 Adonis Stevenson
Next Fight: Unknown
19) James DeGale (18-27)
Last Fight: 10/15/2011- W(MD12) vs. Piotr Wilczewski (UNR)
Next Fight: 4/21/2012- vs. Cristian Sanavia (UNR)
DeGale will defend his European crown against Spanish journeyman and former contender Cristian Sanavia on April 21 in Denmark, of all places.
20) George Groves (18-18)
Last Fight: 11/5/2011- TKO2 Paul Smith (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Groves is starting to earn himself a reputation as an unreliable opponent.  He withdrew from a scheduled fight back in December with injury.  Then he scheduled a fight for March that he withdrew from in order to fight for Robert Stieglitz’s belt.  But now he has withdrawn with that bout with a new injury.

The Week Ahead: Friday: #7 Adonis Stevenson looks to destroy another fringe contender as he takes on Uruguay’s Noe Gonzalez on Friday Night Fights.

Saturday:
Busy night!  The most potentially significant fight is in Schwerin, Germany, where #8 Dimitri Sartison hopes to return to his past form after a bad knee injury when he takes on fringe contender/gatekeeper type Karoly Balzsay.  Considering that Balzsay definitely deserved to lose to an unproven prospect in Stas Kashtanov, this would normally look like a gimme for Sartison.  The intrigue enters the equation due to the fact that Sartison himself barely scraped by with a win over a very weak journeyman in his return bout.  If that’s the best he’s got left after his injury, Balzsay should have a field day.

A bit to the north in Fredrikshavn, Denmark, Euro champion #19 James DeGale takes on aging former contender Cristian Sanavia of Spain.

Also, two ranked contenders- #15 Bryan Vera (at middleweight) and #16 Librado Andrade (at light heavyweight) will see action in Texas stay-busy fights, apparently in other divisions.  Vera takes on fellow Texan Taronze Washington in Fort Worth, while Andrade fights untested 15-1 prospect Rowland Bryant in El Paso.

French gatekeeper Christopher Rebrasse slammed the gate shut in the 8th round on fringe prospect Hassene Azouz Neffati to retain his French title in the town of Enghien on Thursday.  No changes to the rankings.

Last Fight: 3/3/2012- TKO6 Serge Yannick (UNR)

Next Fight: Unknown
The Bute fight was the only one of Johnson’s recent career that wasn’t really close.  Bute is certainly a top fighter, but it could be that the Road Warrior is starting to wind down a bit.

Super Middleweight: 2012, Apr 2-8

Posted in Rankings, Super Middleweight with tags , , , , , , , on May 30, 2012 by danboxing
In the week’s biggest fight, #6 Arthur Abraham banged out a solid and workmanlike decision over Polish fringe contender Piotr Wilczewski.  On the same card, mediocre German prospect Henry Weber barely walked away with a win over Italian journeyman Lorenzo Di Giacomo.  Weber looked chubby and probably should be fighting at 154 instead of 168.  He also needs a lot of work, especially on his defense.

Finally, Kelly Pavlik fought a complete novice a couple pounds over the 168 pound limit for his first fight in almost 11 months.  He didn’t have much difficulty the way he had with the theoretically better Alfonso Lopez, stopping Aaron Jaco early in the 2nd round.

Abraham picked up a fairly significant victory, but it really just more or less cancels out #5 Oosthuizen’s win over Serge Yannick from earlier in the month.  No changes to the rankings.

Dan’s Top 20
Champ: Andre Ward (16-150-150)

Last Fight: 3/3/2012- TKO6 Serge Yannick (UNR)
Next Fight: 4/27/2012- vs. Marcus Johnson (UNR)
Prospective opponent Maxim Vlasov was injured in a car accident, and so Oosthuizen will be fighting fringe contender/prospect Marcus Johnson, instead.  April 27, on ShoBox.
6) Arthur Abraham (16-128-128)
Last Fight: 3/31/2012- UD12 Piotr Wilczewski (UNR)

Next Fight: Unknown
Avoided removal by the skin of his teeth, but he’s going to start plummeting any month now if he doesn’t beat someone decent.
11) Andy Lee (16-56)
Last Fight: 3/10/2012- TKO2 Saul Duran (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Lee has apparently made the finals for a potential shot at Julio Cesar Chavez at 160.  It’s down to him and Vanes Martirosyan, it would appear.
12) Anthony Dirrell (16-18)
Last Fight: 12/2/2011- TKO4 Renan St. Juste (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Finally stepped up to the fringe contender level against St. Juste.  Verdict: not too shabby.
13) Mouhamed Ali Ndiaye (16-21)
Last Fight: 11/11/2011- TKO12 Andrea Di Luisa (UNR)

Dominated and stopped a bona fide fringe contender in Di Luisa, and earned a nice ranking in the process.
14) Glen Johnson (16-74)
Last Fight: 11/5/2011- L(UD12) vs. #3 Lucian Bute

Andrade has scheduled what he’s described as a stay-busy fight for April 21, with the opponent yet to be announced.
17) Aaron Pryor, Jr. (16-48)
18) Jesus Gonzales (16-39)
Last Fight: 2/18/2012- L(KO1) vs. #9 Adonis Stevenson
Next Fight: Unknown
19) James DeGale (16-25)

Last Fight: 11/5/2011- TKO2 Paul Smith (UNR)
Next Fight: 5/5/2012- vs. #4 Robert Stieglitz
Groves withdrew at very nearly the last minute from his scheduled rematch with Kenny Anderson.  It may not be a coincidence that the WBO had ordered a fight with Stieglitz 5 days before…

The Week Ahead: French gatekeeper Christopher Rebrasse will fight journeyman Hassene Azouz Neffati for the French title on Thursday in the town of Enghien.

Super Middleweight: 2012, Mar 26- Apr 1

Former hot prospect Curtis Stevens stopped low-level journeyman Romaro Johnson in Brooklyn on Saturday, needing just part of the 1st to do so.  Stevens might be looking at fighting as a middleweight, as he came in at just 162 against his 160 pound opponent.

Nikola Sjekloca- the 30-something prospect who is often less than impressive in the ring- went the 6-round distance with the truly awful Nikola Matic in Montenegro earlier in the night, but at least he won each round.

Dan’s Top 20
Champ: Andre Ward (15-149-149)
Last Fight: 12/17/2011- UD12 #2 Carl Froch
Next Fight: Unknown
A little bit of a disappointing batch of initial rhetoric coming out of the Ward camp.  While Bute says he is willing to travel to Oakland to fight Ward, Ward himself seems more interested in Kessler.  Normally I wouldn’t knock a Champ-#3 contender matchup, but we’ve already got that one figured out.  He’s also said he’s willing to fight J.C. Chavez in Mexico.
1) Lucian Bute (15-311-311)
Last Fight: 11/5/2012- UD12 #13 Glen Johnson
Next Fight: 5/26/2012- vs. #2 Carl Froch
Despite Showtime rejecting the fight, Bute will face Froch in Nottingham on May 26.  Epix will likely televise in the US.
2) Carl Froch (15-302-302)
Last Fight: 12/17/2011- L(UD12) vs. #1 Andre Ward
Next Fight: 5/26/2012- vs. #1 Lucian Bute
See Bute’s notes, above.
3) Mikkel Kessler (15-381-381)
Last Fight: 6/4/2011- TKO6 Mehdi Bouadla (UNR)
Next Fight: 5/19/2012- vs. Allan Green (UNR) (at LHW)
I’m still not clear on why Kessler and Stieglitz is off, but Kessler is now set to fight Allan Green at 175 for some reason.  The fight will be in Copenhagen.
4) Robert Stieglitz (15-135-135)
Last Fight: 1/14/2012- UD12 Henry Weber (UNR)
Next Fight: 4/14/2012- vs. #3 Mikkel Kessler
See Kessler’s notes, above.
5) Thomas Oosthuizen (15-43-91)
Last Fight: 3/3/2012- TKO6 Serge Yannick (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Oosthuizen might be fighting Maxim Vlasov on the April 27 ShoBox broadcast.
6) Arthur Abraham (15-127-127)
Last Fight: 1/14/2012- KO5 Pablo Farias (UNR)
Next Fight: 3/31/2012- vs. Piotr Wilczewski (UNR)
Staying admirably busy, Abraham will fight Polish fringe contender Piotr Wilczewski in Kiel at the end of March.
7) Adonis Stevenson (6-16-16)
Last Fight: 2/18/2012- KO1 #18 Jesus Gonzales
Next Fight: 4/20/2012- vs. Noe Gonzalez (UNR)
Stevenson continues his string of fringe contenders as opponents when he battles Uraguayan prospect Noe Gonzalez on Friday Night Fights in mid-May.
8) Dimitri Sartison (6-87-91)
Last Fight: 11/12/2011- W(MD8) vs. Arturs Kulikauskis (UNR) (at LHW)
Next Fight: 4/21/2012- vs. Karoly Balzsay (UNR)
Sartison is taking a step back up to the fringe contender level in April.  If his knee isn’t close to 100% (which it didn’t appear to be against journeyman Kulikauskis), Balzsay is the right level of opponent to capitalize.
9) Peter Quillin (6-48-48)
Last Fight: 11/5/2011- TKO6 Craig McEwan (UNR) (at MW)
Next Fight: 5/26/2012- vs. Winky Wright (UNR) (at MW?)
After it originally appeared a no-go, Quillin’s proposed fight with inactive former champ Winky Wright is now on for the Tarver-Kayode undercard on Showtime.
10) Sakio Bika (15-15-260)
Last Fight: 12/3/2011- RTD3 Alfredo Contreras (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Avoided removal by the skin of his teeth, but he’s going to start plummeting any month now if he doesn’t beat someone decent.
11) Andy Lee (15-55)
Last Fight: 3/10/2012- TKO2 Saul Duran (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Lee has apparently made the finals for a potential shot at Julio Cesar Chavez at 160.  It’s down to him and Vanes Martirosyan, it would appear.
12) Anthony Dirrell (15-17)
Last Fight: 12/2/2011- TKO4 Renan St. Juste (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Finally stepped up to the fringe contender level against St. Juste.  Verdict: not too shabby.
13) Mouhamed Ali Ndiaye (15-20)
Last Fight: 11/11/2011- TKO12 Andrea Di Luisa (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Dominated and stopped a bona fide fringe contender in Di Luisa, and earned a nice ranking in the process.
14) Glen Johnson (15-73)
Last Fight: 11/5/2011- L(UD12) vs. #3 Lucian Bute
Next Fight: Unknown
The Bute fight was the only one of Johnson’s recent career that wasn’t really close.  Bute is certainly a top fighter, but it could be that the Road Warrior is starting to wind down a bit.
15) Bryan Vera (15-60)
Last Fight: 10/1/2011- L(UD10) vs. #15 Andy Lee
Next Fight: 4/21/2012- vs. Taronze Washington (UNR)
Vera will fight no-name journeyman Taronze Washignton on April 21.
16) Librado Andrade (15-31)
Last Fight: 8/27/2011- TKO3 Matt O’Brien (UNR)
Next Fight: 4/21/2012- vs. Unknown Opponent
Andrade has scheduled what he’s described as a stay-busy fight for April 21, with the opponent yet to be announced.
17) Aaron Pryor, Jr. (15-47)
18) Jesus Gonzales (15-38)
Last Fight: 2/18/2012- L(KO1) vs. #9 Adonis Stevenson
Next Fight: Unknown
19) James DeGale (15-24)
Last Fight: 10/15/2011- W(MD12) vs. Piotr Wilczewski (UNR)
Next Fight: 4/21/2012- vs. Cristian Sanavia (UNR)
DeGale will defend his European crown against Spanish journeyman and former contender Cristian Sanavia on April 21 in Denmark, of all places.
20) George Groves (15-15)
Last Fight: 11/5/2011- TKO2 Paul Smith (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Groves withdrew at very nearly the last minute from his scheduled rematch with Kenny Anderson.  It may not be a coincidence that the WBO had ordered a fight with Stieglitz 5 days before…

The Week Ahead: Three fights to mention on Saturday:
In Kiel, Germany, #6 Arthur Abraham battles Polish journeyman Piotr Wilsczewski, who is fresh off a mediocre performance against journeyman Geard Ajetovic.  On the undercard for that fight, busy but largely unimpressive German prospect Henry Weber and veteran career journeyman Lorenzo Di Giacomo lock up, as well.

Later that evening, former Middleweight Champion Kelly Pavlik- who has battled alcohol issues as well as some disappointing outings in the last couple years- returns for the first time in nearly 11 months when he takes on 15-2 but very untested journeyman Aaron Jaco in San Antonio.

Super Middleweight: 2012, Mar 19-25

Edwin Rodriguez finally won non-controversially against a quality opponent.  The Dominican prospect- long-since relocated to Massachusetts- had struggled to debatable wins against Will Rosinsky and Aaron Pryor, against both of whom he was gifted comfortable scorecards.  There was no doubt of his supremacy this time, however, winning 98-92 on my card.

In Russia, one-loss prospect Maxim Vlasov dominated low-level journeyman Bernard Donfack and knocked him down twice for good measure.

Rodriguez falls just short of supplanting George Groves for a ranking, as Groves does have a win (agree or not) against a #20 contender, while Don George was nowhere near that proven.

Dan’s Top 20
Champ: Andre Ward (14-148-148)
Last Fight: 12/17/2011- UD12 #2 Carl Froch
Next Fight: Unknown
A little bit of a disappointing batch of initial rhetoric coming out of the Ward camp.  While Bute says he is willing to travel to Oakland to fight Ward, Ward himself seems more interested in Kessler.  Normally I wouldn’t knock a Champ-#3 contender matchup, but we’ve already got that one figured out.  He’s also said he’s willing to fight J.C. Chavez in Mexico.
1) Lucian Bute (14-310-310)
Last Fight: 11/5/2012- UD12 #13 Glen Johnson
Next Fight: 5/26/2012- vs. #2 Carl Froch
Despite Showtime rejecting the fight, Bute will face Froch in Nottingham on May 26.  Epix will likely televise in the US.
2) Carl Froch (14-301-301)
Last Fight: 12/17/2011- L(UD12) vs. #1 Andre Ward
Next Fight: 5/26/2012- vs. #1 Lucian Bute
See Bute’s notes, above.
3) Mikkel Kessler (14-380-380)
Last Fight: 6/4/2011- TKO6 Mehdi Bouadla (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
After a rescheduling, Kessler-Stieglitz is now off for some unknown reason, and Kessler is apparently considering a fight with Cloud at 175.
4) Robert Stieglitz (14-134-134)
Last Fight: 1/14/2012- UD12 Henry Weber (UNR)
Next Fight: 4/14/2012- vs. #3 Mikkel Kessler
See Kessler’s notes, above.
5) Thomas Oosthuizen (14-42-90)
Last Fight: 3/3/2012- TKO6 Serge Yannick (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Oosthuizen might be fighting Maxim Vlasov on the April 27 ShoBox broadcast.
6) Arthur Abraham (14-126-126)
Last Fight: 1/14/2012- KO5 Pablo Farias (UNR)
Next Fight: 3/31/2012- vs. Piotr Wilczewski (UNR)
Staying admirably busy, Abraham will fight Polish fringe contender Piotr Wilczewski in Kiel at the end of March.
7) Adonis Stevenson (5-15-15)
Last Fight: 2/18/2012- KO1 #18 Jesus Gonzales
Next Fight: 4/20/2012- vs. Noe Gonzalez (UNR)
Stevenson continues his string of fringe contenders as opponents when he battles Uraguayan prospect Noe Gonzalez on Friday Night Fights in mid-May.
8) Dimitri Sartison (5-86-90)
Last Fight: 11/12/2011- W(MD8) vs. Arturs Kulikauskis (UNR) (at LHW)
Next Fight: 4/21/2012- vs. Karoly Balzsay (UNR)
Sartison is taking a step back up to the fringe contender level in April.  If his knee isn’t close to 100% (which it didn’t appear to be against journeyman Kulikauskis), Balzsay is the right level of opponent to capitalize.
9) Peter Quillin (5-47-47)
Last Fight: 11/5/2011- TKO6 Craig McEwan (UNR) (at MW)
Next Fight: 5/26/2012- vs. Winky Wright (UNR) (at MW?)
After it originally appeared a no-go, Quillin’s proposed fight with inactive former champ Winky Wright is now on for the Tarver-Kayode undercard on Showtime.
10) Sakio Bika (14-14-259)
Last Fight: 12/3/2011- RTD3 Alfredo Contreras (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Avoided removal by the skin of his teeth, but he’s going to start plummeting any month now if he doesn’t beat someone decent.
11) Andy Lee (14-54)
Last Fight: 3/10/2012- TKO2 Saul Duran (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
12) Anthony Dirrell (14-16)
Last Fight: 12/2/2011- TKO4 Renan St. Juste (UNR)

13) Mouhamed Ali Ndiaye (14-19)
Last Fight: 11/11/2011- TKO12 Andrea Di Luisa (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Dominated and stopped a bona fide fringe contender in Di Luisa, and earned a nice ranking in the process.
14) Glen Johnson (14-72)
Last Fight: 11/5/2011- L(UD12) vs. #3 Lucian Bute
Next Fight: Unknown
The Bute fight was the only one of Johnson’s recent career that wasn’t really close.  Bute is certainly a top fighter, but it could be that the Road Warrior is starting to wind down a bit.
15) Bryan Vera (14-59)
Last Fight: 10/1/2011- L(UD10) vs. #15 Andy Lee
Next Fight: 4/21/2012- vs. Taronze Washington (UNR)
Vera will fight no-name journeyman Taronze Washignton on April 21.
16) Librado Andrade (14-30)
Last Fight: 8/27/2011- TKO3 Matt O’Brien (UNR)
Next Fight: 4/21/2012- vs. Unknown Opponent
Andrade has scheduled what he’s described as a stay-busy fight for April 21, with the opponent yet to be announced.
17) Aaron Pryor, Jr. (14-46)
18) Jesus Gonzales (14-37)
Last Fight: 2/18/2012- L(KO1) vs. #9 Adonis Stevenson
Next Fight: Unknown
19) James DeGale (14-23)
Last Fight: 10/15/2011- W(MD12) vs. Piotr Wilczewski (UNR)
Next Fight: 4/21/2012- vs. Cristian Sanavia (UNR)
DeGale will defend his European crown against Spanish journeyman and former contender Cristian Sanavia on April 21 in Denmark, of all places.
20) George Groves (14-14)
Last Fight: 11/5/2011- TKO2 Paul Smith (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Groves withdrew at very nearly the last minute from his scheduled rematch with Kenny Anderson.  It may not be a coincidence that the WBO had ordered a fight with Stieglitz 5 days before…

The Week Ahead: In the appropriately-named Niksic, Montenegro we find a battle of “Niks,” as aging and mediocre undefeated prospect Nikola Sjekloca battles the completely hapless Nikola Matic.

Former hot prospect Curtis Stevens returns to action for the first time in the more than 2 years since he lost in a huge upset to Jesse Brinkley.  He will fight journeyman Romaro Johnson on the likely non-televised portion of the Judah-Paris undercard in Brooklyn.

#11 Andy Lee had no problem with Mexican veteran Saul Duran, stopping the journeyman inside 2 rounds on Saturday.  About 12 hours before, Australian gatekeeper Les Sherrington rebounded from a broken leg 10 months ago by winning a dominant decision over Argentine journeyman Oscar Veliz in Australia.  No changes to the rankings.

Dan’s Top 20
Champ: Andre Ward (13-147-147)

Next Fight: 5/26/2012- vs. #1 Lucian Bute
See Bute’s notes, above.
3) Mikkel Kessler (13-379-379)
Last Fight: 6/4/2011- TKO6 Mehdi Bouadla (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
After a rescheduling, Kessler-Stieglitz is now off for some unknown reason, and Kessler is apparently considering a fight with Cloud at 175.
4) Robert Stieglitz (13-133-133)
Last Fight: 1/14/2012- UD12 Henry Weber (UNR)
Next Fight: 4/14/2012- vs. #3 Mikkel Kessler
See Kessler’s notes, above.
5) Thomas Oosthuizen (13-41-89)
Last Fight: 3/3/2012- TKO6 Serge Yannick (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Oosthuizen is knocking on #4 Stieglitz’s door, but probably needs another top 10 win to snatch that spot.
6) Arthur Abraham (13-125-125)
Last Fight: 1/14/2012- KO5 Pablo Farias (UNR)
Next Fight: 3/31/2012- vs. Piotr Wilczewski (UNR)
Staying admirably busy, Abraham will fight Polish fringe contender Piotr Wilczewski in Kiel at the end of March.
7) Adonis Stevenson (4-14-14)
Last Fight: 2/18/2012- KO1 #18 Jesus Gonzales
Next Fight: 4/14/2012- vs. Unknown Opponent
Stevenson continues to batter his way up the ranks.
8) Dimitri Sartison (4-85-89)
Last Fight: 11/12/2011- W(MD8) vs. Arturs Kulikauskis (UNR) (at LHW)

9) Peter Quillin (4-46-46)
Last Fight: 11/5/2011- TKO6 Craig McEwan (UNR) (at MW)
Next Fight: Unknown
Quillin was rumored to be nearing a deal for a fight with former 154 lb. champion Winky Wright, but the latest is that the fight is a no-go.
10) Sakio Bika (13-13-258)
Last Fight: 12/3/2011- RTD3 Alfredo Contreras (UNR)

Avoided removal by the skin of his teeth, but he’s going to start plummeting any month now if he doesn’t beat someone decent.

Groves withdrew at very nearly the last minute from his scheduled rematch with Kenny Anderson.  It may not be a coincidence that the WBO had ordered a fight with Stieglitz 5 days before…

The Week Ahead:
Friday: In Krasnodar, Russia, local prospect Maxim Vlasov will fight low-level Cameroonian journeyman Bernard Donfack.

Saturday: A battle of prospects on the Martinez-Macklin undercard at MSG, with Chicago’s Don George taking on Domincan Massachussetts resident Edwin Rodriguez.

Light Heavyweight: 2012, May 28- Jun 3

Posted in Light Heavyweight, Rankings with tags , , , , , , , on May 28, 2012 by danboxing
No in-ring action to report at 175, this week, but Adrian Diaconu has not fought in over a year now, and has no fight scheduled.  Diaconu hasn’t won since October 2010, and has not beaten anybody worth fighting since his close-fought April 2008 decision over Chris Henry.  Diaconu’s exit makes room for the return of the otherwise plummeting Eduard Gutknecht, who was bumped out only last week after a bit over a year in the rankings.

Dan’s Top 20
Champ: Chad Dawson (5-313-313)
Last Fight: 4/28/2012- W (MD12) Champ Bernard Hopkins
Next Fight: 9/8/2012- vs. SMW Champ Andre Ward (at SMW)
Wow- it really is happening!  Dawson will reportedly drop down to 168 to challenge Andre Ward for the World Championship at Super Middle.  For my money, it will also be an opportunity for Ward to capture Dawson’s light heavyweight title.  He’s fighting the 175 champion under the 175 limit.  I’m not sure this scenario has ever played out in the history of boxing…and it’s pretty exciting- even if the fight itself may not  be.
1) Bernard Hopkins (5-312-312)
Last Fight: 4/28/2012- L(MD12) vs. #2 Chad Dawson
Next Fight: Unknown
I’m not sure what he thinks he can or still wants to prove, but 47-year-old Hopkins has shrugged off retirement talk and there is talk of a potential fight with Nathan Cleverly.
2) Jean Pascal (5-154-154)
Last Fight: 5/21/2011- L(UD12) vs. #1 Bernard Hopkins
Next Fight: 8/11/2012- vs. #4 Tavoris Cloud
Showtime has kindly provided the date of August 11 for the Pascal-Cloud tilt.  That’s more than 14-months since Pascal’s last fight…just sayin’.
3) Gabriel Campillo (15-101-101)
Last Fight: 2/18/2012- L*(UD12) vs. #3 Tavoris Cloud (Robbery)
Next Fight: Unknown
With Cloud apparently sidestepping not only Campillo, but also a mandatory with Karo Murat in favor of an even better match with Pascal, I wonder if Campillo might get the rematch with Murat, instead.
4) Tavoris Cloud (15-144-144)
Last Fight: 2/18/2012- UD12* vs. #4 Gabriel Campillo (Robbery)
Next Fight: 8/11/2012- vs. #2 Jean Pascal
It appeared certain that Cloud would fight Murat next, but now he’s fighting Pascal instead.
5) Nathan Cleverly (33-121-121)
Last Fight: 2/25/2012- UD12 Tommy Karpency (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Originally scheduled to fight the underwhelming Robin Krasniqi, a virus scuttled that fight for him.  Not that anyone’s complaining.  Barring a rescheduling, which would be problematic from the WBO’s perspective, Cleverly may be looking toward his mandatory with Sukhotski next, though there’s some talk of a Hopkins fight, as well.
6) Karo Murat (35-35-56)
Last Fight: 10/1/2011- Draw (SD12) vs. #4 Gabriel Campillo
Next Fight: 6/2/2012- vs. Miguel Velozo (UNR)
After his hopes for a Cloud fight were dashed, Murat will settle for a short-notice stay-busy fight with Cuban prospect Miguel Velozo.
7) Tony Bellew (33-33-33)
Last Fight: 4/27/2012- TKO5 #20 Danny McIntosh
Next Fight: Unknown
After demolishing McIntosh for the British title, Bellew has renewed his calls for a rematch with Cleverly.  He also named Cloud and Shumenov as guys he’s ready for.  He also recently became the latest fighter to announce a split with promoter Frank Warren which Warren denies.
8) Beibut Shumenov (17-97-101)
Last Fight: 7/29/2011- TKO9 Danny Santiago (UNR)
Next Fight: 6/2/2012- vs. Enrique Ornelas (UNR)
How this guy gets to keep even an alphabet title while fighting exactly William Joppy, Danny Santiago, and Enrique Ornelas over what will become more than a 2-year span is well beyond me.  And that’s setting aside the fact that he got totally worked in the fight that “won” him the title in the first place.  I know for a fact that Adrian Diaconu wanted to fight him, so it’s not like he’s being ducked by every name fighter out there.
9) Yusaf Mack (17-65-101)
Last Fight: 4/27/2012- UD12 Omar Sheika (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Mack called out Cloud and Dawson after beating Sheika.  Sure, he’s a top 10 fighter, but that still feels like a stretch for him.
10) Dmitri Sukhotski (17-17-83)
Last Fight: 10/8/2011- TKO2 Nadjib Mohammedi (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
The WBO originally demanded that Cleverly fight Sukhotski rather than the mediocre Krasniqi, but then backed down and gave Cleverly an extra 4 months to take the fight.  Now that Cleverly got sick and cancelled on Krasniqi, surely this fight will have to happen now…
11) Isaac Chilemba (17-17)
Last Fight: 2/3/2012- UD10 #16 Edison Miranda
Next Fight: Unknown
Chilemba, a former super middleweight, now has the highest ranking of his career at either weight after beating fringe contender Miranda.
12) Vyacheslav Uzelkov (9-17)
Last Fight: 5/12/2012- UD8 Ravshanbek Jabbarov (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Deserved much better than a unanimous decision loss against Gutknecht, and is rewarded for it in my rankings.
13) Jürgen Brähmer (6-6)
Last Fight: 4/21/2012- UD10 Vikapita Meroro (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Braehmer has showed up for his last two fights, which at least feels like a record for him.
14) Denis Grachev (5-5)
Last Fight: 4/27/2012- TKO8 #15 Ismayl Sillakh
Next Fight: Unknown
Yes, it was a flukey win, and it’s clear from his performance on its face that, at least at this point, he’s not this good.  But honestly the result in black and white could have supported a rating as high as around #10.  Common sense can only demote a guy so far (in conjunction with relative inexperience) when his actual resume calls out for a decent ranking.
15) Mikkel Kessler (1-2)
Last Fight: 5/19/2012- TKO4 Allan Green (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Kessler recently expressed interest in rematching both Andre Ward and Carl Froch following Froch’s demolition of Lucian Bute.  He may not be at 175 for long.
16) Cornelius White (1-24)
Last Fight: 5/12/2012- KO2 Anthony Bowman (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
White, who was blown out in one round by prospect Don George at super middleweight early in 2011, may be a fluke.  But at least for one night, he looked a lot better against former top amateur Yordanis Despaigne than did established fringe contender Edison Miranda.
17) Zsolt Erdei (1-80)
Last Fight: 6/4/2011- KO6 Byron Mitchell (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Erdei will be subject to removal when I perform the June 11-17 update if he doesn’t schedule a fight before that.  He has run into some hard luck with injury and Showtime’s budget, but he’s had time to find something when neither were a factor.  And his level of competition over the years doesn’t call for much sympathy.
18) Tony Averlant (1-9)
Last Fight: 3/31/2012- L*(SD12) vs. #12 Eduard Gutknecht (Robbery)
Next Fight: Unknown
Averlant is probably closer to the journeyman he was on 3/30 than the solid fringe contender he became on 3/31, but a win is a win…even when it’s a loss (in Germany).
19) Ismayl Sillakh (1-72)
Last Fight: 4/27/2012- L(TKO8) vs. Denis Grachev (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
I didn’t see that coming at all.  I trust Sillakh will bounce back from the upset loss to Grachev.  But wow.
20) Eduard Gutknecht (1-1)
Last Fight: 3/31/2012- W*(SD12) vs. Tony Averlant (UNR) (Robbery)
Next Fight: Unknown

The Week Ahead:
Friday: Russian prospect Sergei Kovalev faces still-dangerous journeyman Darnell Boone in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.

Saturday: #6 Karo Murat takes on one-loss but otherwise untested Cuban prospect Miguel Velozo in Herning, Denmark.  #8 Beibut Shumenov makes an embarrassing title defense in Vegas against journeyman Enrique Ornelas.  Sakio Bika and Francisco Sierra are also in action- super middleweights that have been known to come in over the limit.

1) Yoan Pablo Hernandez (17-101-101)
Last Fight: 2/4/2012- UD12 #4 Steve Cunningham
Next Fight: Unknown
Erased any doubt as to the better fighter between him and Cunningham.  A fight with Lebedev now would be huge.
2) Denis Lebedev (17-121-121)
Last Fight: 4/4/2012- KO2 Shawn Cox (UNR)
Next Fight: 7/21/2012- vs. HW #16 Jean-Marc Mormeck
Lebedev-Mormeck is now official, and will happen on July 21 in Paris.
3) Antonio Tarver (17-45-45)
Last Fight: 7/20/2011- RTD9 #7 Danny Green
Next Fight: 6/2/2012- vs. #13 Lateef Kayode
I seem to have missed this over a month ago, but Kayode-Tarver was sneakily movedto June 2.
4) Steve Cunningham (4-415-415)
Last Fight: 2/4/2012- L(UD12) vs. #3 Yoan Pablo Hernandez
Next Fight: Unknown
5) Marco Huck (4-286-286)
Last Fight: 5/5/2012- Draw* (MD12) vs. #7 Ola Afolabi
Next Fight: Unknown
A summary of where Huck is at: Afolabi understandably wants a third fight with him- this time in the UK.  Huck wants a rematch with Povetkin.  Meanwhile, Huck is laying the groundwork for hyping a potential fight with Alekseev following the Russian’s poor performance against Arslan.
6) Ola Afolabi (4-168-168)
Last Fight: 5/5/2012- Draw* (MD12) vs. #4 Marco Huck
Next Fight: Unknown
Afolabi would like a third fight with Huck, this time in the UK.
7) Krzysztof Wlodarczyk (4-362-362)
Last Fight: 11/30/2011- TKO11 #9 Danny Green
Next Fight: Unknown
8) Guillermo Jones (26-87-87)
Last Fight: 11/5/2011- TKO6 Michael Marrone (UNR)
Next Fight: 6/23/2012- vs. Joell Godfrey (UNR)
After missing out on several potential big fights, Jones will settle for a stay-busy outing against St. Louis area journeyman Joell Godfrey, June 23 in Miami.
9) Firat Arslan (3-3-46)
Last Fight: 5/11/2012- Draw* (MD12) vs. #12 Alexander Alekseev (Robbery)
Next Fight: Unknown
The EBU has ordered a rematch between Arslan-who was robbed- and Alekseev, who escaped with a gift draw.
10) Danny Green (3-130-130)
Last Fight: 11/30/2011- L(TKO11) vs. #8 Krzysztof Wlodarczyk
Next Fight: Unknown
Shane Cameron is hoping to fight Green if he beats Monte Barrett in May.  No major news from Green’s end, except that he’s trying to goad the much, much smaller Anthony Mundine into a rematch.
11) B.J. Flores (3-101)
Last Fight: 1/28/2012- TKO6 Hugo Pineda (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Flores has said he might fight the Fragomeni-Branco winner.  Not sure how that will be affected by the fact that there is no winner.
12) Francisco Palacios (3-61)
Last Fight: 11/5/2011- UD8 Joell Godfrey (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
The WBC has mandated a rematch with Wlodarczyk, but that seems almost forgotten as Wlodarczyk has since chased fights with Roy Jones and Antonio Tarver, neither of which seem to be currently on the table.
13) Lateef Kayode (11-80)
Last Fight: 9/9/2011- UD10 Felix Cora, Jr. (UNR)
Next Fight: 6/2/2012- vs. #3 Antonio Tarver
Kayode has snubbed a mandatory shot at Guillermo Jones’ alphabet belt for a shot at an even better fighter, the aging but still very capable Antonio Tarver.
14) Giacobbe Fragomeni (11-185)
Last Fight: 3/17/2012- Draw (MD12) vs. Silvio Branco (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Fragomeni appears to be showing his age after nearly losing to an even older man in Branco.
15) Silvio Branco (11-11)
Last Fight: 3/17/2012- Draw (MD12) vs. #10 Giacobbe Fragomeni
Next Fight: Unknown
45 year old veteran Silvio Branco got what may have been his final hurrah with a close-fought draw with top 10-ranked Giacobbe Fragomeni.
16) Mateusz Masternak (9-9)
Last Fight: 5/19/2012- UD10 Hari Miles (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
17) Alexander Alekseev (3-72)
Last Fight: 5/11/2012- Draw*(MD12) vs. #19 Firat Arslan (robbery- should have been L)
Next Fight: Unknown
Huck has randomly been talking smack, which seems like a contrived attempt at hyping a pretty pointless fight between the two of them.  A rematch with Arslan would seem like a pretty natural move– and the EBU has ordered just that.
18) Enad Licina (3-101)
Last Fight: 2/4/2012- L(UD12) vs. #17 Alexander Alexeev
Next Fight: Unknown
May be getting a little shopworn.  He’s not a pushover by any means, but you’d have to be crazy to imagine him as a top-10-type guy.
19) Troy Ross (3-17)
Last Fight: 2/4/2012- UD8 Lukasz Rusiewicz (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Inactivity combined with poor competition are killing the career of top-level talent Ross, but at least he’s technically an active cruiserweight again, and thus eligible to remain in the rankings.
20) Grigory Drozd (9-16)
Last Fight: 2/8/2012- RTD9 Richard Hall (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Drozd’s scheduled fight with Cesar Crenz was mysteriously cancelled- the same fate that befell a scheduled fight with William Joppy.

THE WEEK AHEAD:  #3 Antonio Tarver takes on #13 Lateef Kayode as the main event of a Showtime Championship Boxing broadcast.  Both men have a lot to prove.  Tarver needs to prove that he’s still got it at 43 years old, while Kayode needs to prove that he ever will have it.  He’s proven to be at least at home in the middle of the 2nd tier of the top 20, but there have been indications- such as his struggles with gatekeeper-level Nick Iannuzzi- that he might not have what it takes to go much further than that.  For the aged Tarver, a loss probably ends his career as a major contender.  For the still-youthful Kayode, it might very well send him back to square one for a rebuilding period.  And with one of the best trainers in the world already in his corner, it’s hard to picture him as championship material if he can’t beat a 43-year-old ex-champion from a division below, while seemingly in his prime.

Heavyweight: 2012, May 28- Jun 3

Posted in Heavyweight, Rankings with tags , , , , , , , on May 28, 2012 by danboxing
Nothing too consequential this week, but a few notable fighters were in action.  Friday in Hammond, Indiana, former contender Fres Oquendo needed 9 rounds to stop journeyman Joey Abell, best known as the guy Chris Arreola kissed after stopping him.  The following night, former Olympic Gold Medalist Audley Harrison of the UK stopped Iraqi-born journeyman Ali Adams in 4 in Harrison’s first fight since his 18-month old debacle against David Haye.  Later that evening in Managua, Nicaragua, Cuban prospect Luis Ortiz needed just two of the scheduled 6 to dispose of local journeyman Walter Palacios.  No changes to the rankings this week.

Dan’s Top 20 (Weeks in current position-weeks in top 10 (if applicable)-weeks in top 20)
Champ: Wladimir Klitschko (153-366-366)
Last Fight: 3/3/2012- TKO4 #16 Jean-Marc Mormeck
Next Fight: 7/7/2012- vs. #10 Tony Thompson
Wlad will be defending the title against #10 Tony Thompson in what will likely be another ho-hum matchup for the Champ.  On the bright side, Thompson did put up a relatively spirited challenge the last time the two met in 2008.
1) Vitali Klitschko (190-190-190)
Last Fight: 2/18/2012- UD12 #6 Dereck Chisora
Next Fight: Unknown
Klitschko’s potential choices for a September opponent currently appear to include the following: Seth Mitchell, Bermane Stiverne, Franklin Lawrence, as well as unranked prospects Mariusz Wach, Manuel Charr, and Luis Ortiz.  Fairly disappointing that Vitali’s not even considering any top 10 fighters this close to the end of his career, though there might be at least one interesting fight to be had from that group.
2) Alexander Povetkin (40-240-240)
Last Fight: 2/25/2012- W*(MD12) vs. CW #5 Marco Huck
Next Fight: 7/14/2012- vs. Hasim Rahman (UNR)
Povetkin’s ludicrous fight with Rahman will now be the co-feature to Haye-Chisora in London.
3) Tomasz Adamek (11-110-110)
Last Fight: 3/24/2012- UD10 Nagy Aguilera (UNR)
Next Fight: 6/16/2012- vs. Eddie Chambers (UNR)
Big news!  Eddie Chambers- who was removed for inactivity from this very spot in the rankings not long ago- will be fighting Adamek in June on NBC Sports.  The stakes will of course be the #2 spot, which Povetkin now appears to be merely warming for the winner.  That is, if Chambers doesn’t withdraw from a 3rd consecutive bout.
4) Marco Huck (11-14-14)
Last Fight: 5/5/2012- Draw (MD12) vs. CW #7 Ola Afolabi (at CW)
Next Fight: Unknown
Unfortunately, Huck is apparently making a thinly-veiled attempt to make a pointless fight with weak European cruiserweight paper champion Alexander Alekseev.
5) Tyson Fury (11-45-45)
Last Fight: 4/14/2012- TKO5 Martin Rogan (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
After a fairly impressive left-handed win over Martin Rogan, Fury appears interested in making a fight with Wlad or Alexander Povetkin.
6) Dereck Chisora (11-26-89)
Last Fight: 2/18/2012- L(UD12) vs. #1 Vitali Klitschko
Next Fight: 7/14/2012- vs. David Haye (UNR)
The British Board is bitterly opposed to this bout- which they refuse to license- but apparently it is going forward anyway.  Get ready for a highly controversial blood-feud between Chisora and recent brawl opponent David Haye, July 14 in London.
7) Robert Helenius (11-61-105)
Last Fight: 12/3/2011- W*(SD12) vs. #18 Dereck Chisora (Robbery)
Next Fight: Unknown
Helenius is now the mandatory challenger to #8 Kubrat Pulev’s European title- previously held by Helenius.  Helenius is still in the midst of an uncertain recovery from shoulder surgery, however.
8) Kubrat Pulev (4-4-81)
Last Fight: 5/5/2012- KO11 #12 Alexander Dimitrenko
Next Fight: Unknown
Might have a Helenius clash on the horizon, though the Finn’s health is a factor.
9) Odlanier Solis (2-11-105)
Last Fight: 5/19/2012- UD12 Konstantin Airich (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Considering he was extremely out of shape and had a surgically-repaired knee to worry about, Solis didn’t look too terrible in coasting to victory over a disappointing Konstantin Airich.
10) Tony Thompson (2-105-105)
Last Fight: 5/27/2011- TKO3 Maurice Harris (UNR)
Next Fight: 7/7/2012- vs. Champ Wladimir Klitschko
See Wladimir Klitschko’s comments, above.
11) Seth Mitchell (11-25)
Last Fight: 4/28/2012- TKO3 Chazz Witherspoon (UNR)
Next Fight: 7/14/2012- vs. Johnathon Banks (UNR)
Mitchell is set to fight the Klitschko-promoted Johnathon Banks, a mediocre one-loss prospect who is probably an upgrade from Witherspoon at least in terms of accomplishment, but a downgrade from Ibragimov.
12) Ruslan Chagaev (4-289)
Last Fight: 4/21/2012- TKO3 Billy Zumbrun (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
The Valuev win is now over 5 years old, and Chagaev’s ranking has suffered as a result.
13) Alexander Dimitrenko (4-72)
Last Fight: 5/5/2012- L(KO11) vs. #17 Kubrat Pulev
Next Fight: Unknown
Despite showing the heart of a quitter and the consistency of a random number generator against Pulev, Dimitrenko hangs on to a solid ranking because the other guys in his tier haven’t been winning meaningful fights lately.
14) Chris Arreola (4-167)
Last Fight: 2/18/2012- KO1 Eric Molina (UNR)
Next Fight: 6/23/2012- vs. Unknown Opponent
Arreola, it appears, will fight on the Matthysse-Soto, Ortiz-Lopez card on June 23.  Most likely his fight will be televised on Showtime Extreme again.
15) Denis Boytsov (4-154)
Last Fight: 4/13/2012- UD10 Dominick Guinn (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Boytsov will likely fight in Moscow on August 24, but nothing official yet.
16) Jean-Marc Mormeck (4-105)
Last Fight: 3/3/2012- L(TKO4) vs. Champ Wladimir Klitschko
Next Fight: 7/21/2012- vs. CW #2 Denis Lebedev (at CW)
It’s official.  Mormeck will drop back to cruiserweight for the first time since 2007 to fight #2 contender Denis Lebedev in Paris on July 21.
17) Bermane Stiverne (4-49)
Last Fight: 4/14/2012- UD8 Willie Herring (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Stiverne is one of several opponents being floated by Vitali’s team right now.
18) Edmund Gerber (4-4)
Last Fight: 5/5/2012- UD8 Maurice Harris (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Not the most scintillating effort against a passive Harris, but the old man is what passes for a fringe contender in this division at the moment, and thus Gerber has built himself a ranking.
19) Franklin Lawrence (4-53)
Last Fight: 10/28/2011- TKO2 Raymond Ochieng (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Lawrence is yet another fighter Vitali is interested in fighting in September.
20) Kevin Johnson (4-9)
Last Fight: 4/1/2012- TKO9 Alex Leapai (UNR)
Next Fight: 6/20/2012- vs. Unknown Opponent
Johnson is set to fight on June 20th in London, but no opponent yet.

THE WEEK AHEAD: It’s fights like this that make me glad I don’t do audio on this blog, because there isn’t a way in hell I could pronounce this name right.  Polish prospect Andrzej Wawrzyk gets the toughest assignment of his career against veteran Russian trial horse Denis Bakhtov in some even more unpronounceable Polish town.

Super Middleweight: 2012, Mar 5-11

Posted in Rankings, Super Middleweight with tags , , , , , , , on May 28, 2012 by danboxing
#5 Thomas Ooshuizen stopped fringe contending prospect Serge Yannick of Australia (by way of Cameroon) in round 6 of their scheduled 12.  This isn’t quite enough to move him past Stieglitz.  Although the competition level of the latter has noticeably dropped off since 2010, he is still proven at a slightly higher level and has done nothing to show that he’s diminished in any way.  No changes to the rankings.

Dan’s Top 20
Champ: Andre Ward (12-146-146)
Last Fight: 12/17/2011- UD12 #2 Carl Froch
Next Fight: Unknown
A little bit of a disappointing batch of initial rhetoric coming out of the Ward camp.  While Bute says he is willing to travel to Oakland to fight Ward, Ward himself seems more interested in Kessler.  Normally I wouldn’t knock a Champ-#3 contender matchup, but we’ve already got that one figured out.  He’s also said he’s willing to fight J.C. Chavez in Mexico.
1) Lucian Bute (12-308-308)
Last Fight: 11/5/2012- UD12 #13 Glen Johnson
Next Fight: 5/26/2012- vs. #2 Carl Froch
Despite Showtime rejecting the fight, Bute will face Froch in Nottingham on May 26.  Epix will likely televise in the US.
2) Carl Froch (12-299-299)
Last Fight: 12/17/2011- L(UD12) vs. #1 Andre Ward
Next Fight: 5/26/2012- vs. #1 Lucian Bute
See Bute’s notes, above.
3) Mikkel Kessler (12-378-378)
Last Fight: 6/4/2011- TKO6 Mehdi Bouadla (UNR)
Next Fight: 4/14/2012- vs. #4 Robert Stieglitz
There is some buzz recently to the effect that the Stieglitz bout may be in trouble, and that Kessler could be looking to fight fringe contender Brian Magee, instead.
4) Robert Stieglitz (12-132-132)
Last Fight: 1/14/2012- UD12 Henry Weber (UNR)
Next Fight: 4/14/2012- vs. #3 Mikkel Kessler
See Kessler’s notes, above.
5) Thomas Oosthuizen (12-40-88)
Last Fight: 3/3/2012- TKO6 Serge Yannick (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Oosthuizen is knocking on #4 Stieglitz’s door, but probably needs another top 10 win to snatch that spot.
6) Arthur Abraham (12-124-124)
Last Fight: 1/14/2012- KO5 Pablo Farias (UNR)
Next Fight: 3/31/2012- vs. Piotr Wilczewski (UNR)
Staying admirably busy, Abraham will fight Polish fringe contender Piotr Wilczewski in Kiel at the end of March.
7) Adonis Stevenson (3-13-13)
Last Fight: 2/18/2012- KO1 #18 Jesus Gonzales
Next Fight: 4/14/2012- vs. Unknown Opponent
Stevenson continues to batter his way up the ranks.
8) Dimitri Sartison (3-84-88)
Last Fight: 11/12/2011- W(MD8) vs. Arturs Kulikauskis (UNR) (at LHW)
Next Fight: 4/21/2012- vs. Karoly Balzsay (UNR)
Sartison is taking a step back up to the fringe contender level in April.  If his knee isn’t close to 100% (which it didn’t appear to be against journeyman Kulikauskis), Balzsay is the right level of opponent to capitalize.
9) Peter Quillin (3-45-45)
Last Fight: 11/5/2011- TKO6 Craig McEwan (UNR) (at MW)
Next Fight: Unknown
Quillin was rumored to be nearing a deal for a fight with former 154 lb. champion Winky Wright, but the latest is that the fight is a no-go.
10) Sakio Bika (12-12-257)
Last Fight: 12/3/2011- RTD3 Alfredo Contreras (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Avoided removal by the skin of his teeth, but he’s going to start plummeting any month now if he doesn’t beat someone decent.
11) Andy Lee (12-52)
Last Fight: 10/1/2011- UD10 #14 Bryan Vera
Next Fight: 3/10/2012- vs. Saul Duran (UNR)
Lee’s replacement opponent, Duran, is actually significantly better than the original guy, Alexis Hloros.  Still not really more than a stay-busy fight, though.
12) Anthony Dirrell (12-14)
Last Fight: 12/2/2011- TKO4 Renan St. Juste (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Finally stepped up to the fringe contender level against St. Juste.  Verdict: not too shabby.
13) Mouhamed Ali Ndiaye (12-17)
Last Fight: 11/11/2011- TKO12 Andrea Di Luisa (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Dominated and stopped a bona fide fringe contender in Di Luisa, and earned a nice ranking in the process.
14) Glen Johnson (12-70)
Last Fight: 11/5/2011- L(UD12) vs. #3 Lucian Bute
Next Fight: Unknown
The Bute fight was the only one of Johnson’s recent career that wasn’t really close.  Bute is certainly a top fighter, but it could be that the Road Warrior is starting to wind down a bit.
15) Bryan Vera (12-57)
Last Fight: 10/1/2011- L(UD10) vs. #15 Andy Lee
Next Fight: Unknown
Totally outclassed by Lee in the rematch of a fight he won last time around.
16) Librado Andrade (12-28)
Last Fight: 8/27/2011- TKO3 Matt O’Brien (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
The news that the Don George fight will be rescheduled is starting to look a bit outdated, and now there’s talk of an IBF eliminator with Froch if the Englishman’s clash with Bute can’t be salvaged.
17) Aaron Pryor, Jr. (12-44)
18) Jesus Gonzales (12-35)
Last Fight: 2/18/2012- L(KO1) vs. #9 Adonis Stevenson
Next Fight: Unknown
19) James DeGale (12-21)
Last Fight: 10/15/2011- W(MD12) vs. Piotr Wilczewski (UNR)
Next Fight: 4/21/2012- vs. Cristian Sanavia (UNR)
DeGale will defend his European crown against Spanish journeyman and former contender Cristian Sanavia on April 21 in Denmark, of all places.
20) George Groves (12-12)
Last Fight: 11/5/2011- TKO2 Paul Smith (UNR)
Next Fight: 3/16/2012- vs. Kenny Anderson (UNR)
Groves is now officially scheduled to fight minor domestic rival Kenny Anderson in a rematch of his 2010 TKO win at Wembley Arena in London on March 16.

The Week Ahead: #11 Andy Lee takes on late replacement Saul Duran, a Mexican veteran, in Novi, Michigan on Saturday.  The night before, gatekeeper-level Australian Les Sherrington is back in the ring for the first time since breaking his leg early in a stay-busy fight last May.  He’ll fight Argentine journeyman Oscar Veliz.
