Light Heavyweight: 2012, Oct 29- Nov 4

Gusmyr Perdomo and his 7-pound weight advantage destroyed late replacement opponent Dario Matorras in Caracas on Saturday, with a 2nd-round stoppage.  The fight was a woeful mismatch in more ways than just the weight, too.  Their numerical records were similar, but Perdomo has been in with the likes of Mikkel Kessler, while Matorras has only beaten 4 men with even a single win, and has never beaten an opponent with a winning record.  No changes to the rankings this week.

Dan’s Top 20 (weeks in current position-weeks in top 10 (if applicable)-weeks in top 20)
Champ: Andre Ward (8-8-8)
Last Fight: 9/8/2012- TKO10 Champ Chad Dawson (at SMW)
Next Fight: Unknown
Ward and Pavlik’s promoters have both confirmed that talks are underway for a February 23 fight on HBO.
1) Chad Dawson (8-335-335)
Last Fight: 9/8/2012- L(TKO10) vs. SMW Champ Andre Ward (at SMW)
Next Fight: Unknown
Rumors of a Dawson-Pascal rematch are now floating around.
2) Bernard Hopkins (8-334-334)
Last Fight: 4/28/2012- L(MD12) vs. #2 Chad Dawson
Next Fight: Unknown
Hopkins is currently non-committal on whether or not he’ll fight again.
3) Jean Pascal (8-176-176)
Last Fight: 5/21/2011- L(UD12) vs. #1 Bernard Hopkins
Next Fight: 12/14/2012- vs. Unknown Opponent
Pascal will come back in December following his long inactivity and hand injury (thus retaining his ranking), with venue and TV problems ensuring that the Cloud fight could not be rescheduled until 2013.  No opponent has been announced.  Pascal is on thin ice with me, though.  He didn’t have to wait as long as he did to schedule the fight with Cloud in the first place, and so if it ever appears that he is no longer returning in December, he will be promptly removed.
4) Gabriel Campillo (8-123-123)
Last Fight: 2/18/2012- L*(UD12) vs. #3 Tavoris Cloud (Robbery)
Next Fight: Unknown
It now looks likely that Campillo will reschedule his fight with hot prospect Sergei Kovalev, from which he withdrew with injury this summer.  It looks like the fight will be the main event of a NBC Sports card from Bethlehem Pennsylvania on January 19.
5) Tavoris Cloud (8-166-166)
Last Fight: 2/18/2012- UD12* vs. #4 Gabriel Campillo (Robbery)
Next Fight: 11/16/2012- vs. #9 Karo Murat
Dan Rafael reports that Cloud-Murat is tentative for November 16 in Venezuela.
6) Cornelius White (8-16-46)
Last Fight: 7/14/2012- UD12 #10 Dmitri Sukhotski
Next Fight: Unknown
White is on a tear.  Is he really top-5 good?  I wouldn’t think so, but he proves me wrong every time I feel I might be overrating him.
7) Nathan Cleverly (8-143-143)
Last Fight: 2/25/2012- UD12 Tommy Karpency (UNR)
Next Fight: 11/10/2012- vs. Unknown Opponent
Don King pulled a real a-hole move and ripped the Cleverly fight right out from under Ryan Coyne via a lawsuit, forcing Clev to look for a new opponent, which will be announced any day.
8) Tony Bellew (16-55-55)
Last Fight: 9/8/2012- TKO9 Edison Miranda (UNR)
Next Fight: 11/17/2012- vs. Roberto Feliciano Bolonti (UNR)
Bellew now has an opponent for his appearance on the Froch-Mack undercard: Argentine Champion Roberto Feliciano Bolonti.
9) Karo Murat (8-57-78)
Last Fight: 6/2/2012- TKO7 Sandro Siproshvili (UNR)
Next Fight: 11/16/2012- vs. #5 Tavoris Cloud
With Pascal’s injury, Murat will get his alphabet title shot a little earlier than expected, with November being the apparent target.
10) Beibut Shumenov (8-119-123)
Last Fight: 6/2/2012- UD12 Enrique Ornelas (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
11) Yusaf Mack (8-123)
Last Fight: 7/7/2012- UD6 Sabou Ballogou (UNR)
Next Fight: 11/17/2012- vs. #1 SMW Carl Froch (at SMW)
In a fairly sudden development, Mack will drop back down to 168 to fight Carl Froch.
12) Isaac Chilemba (8-39)
Last Fight: 9/29/2012- UD8 Rayco Saunders (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Chilemba came in a bit heavy, but performed as expected, shutting out journeyman Rayco Saunders.
13) Vyacheslav Uzelkoff (8-39)
Last Fight: 7/21/2012- W(MD12) vs. Mohamed Belkacem (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Cleverly understandably skipped out on him for a shot on HBO.  No new plans announced for the Ukrainian.
14) Andrzej Fonfara (8-16)
Last Fight: 7/13/2012- UD10* SMW #16 Glen Johnson
Next Fight: 11/16/2012- vs. Tommy Karpency (UNR)
Fonfara will fight journeyman Tommy Karpency in Chicago in mid-November.
15) Jürgen Brähmer (8-28)
Last Fight: 4/21/2012- UD10 Vikapita Meroro (UNR)
Next Fight: 12/15/2012- vs. Eduard Gutknecht (UNR)
Braehmer gets a shot at very vulnerable paper titlist Eduard Gutknecht in December.  That sounds like a fight safe enough to actually show up to.
16) Denis Grachev (8-27)
Last Fight: 4/27/2012- TKO8 #15 Ismayl Sillakh
Next Fight: 11/3/2012- vs. SMW #4 Lucian Bute
Grachev will fight Lucian Bute at a 170 pound catchweight in November.
17) Dmitri Sukhotski (8-105)
Last Fight: 7/14/2012- L(UD12) vs. #16 Cornelius White
Next Fight: Unknown
The White loss must be a bitter disappointment for Sukhotski, who had been in line for a shot at an alphabet strap held by Cleverly for some time, but with Cleverly blatantly ducking him to great effect.
18) Mikkel Kessler (8-24)
Last Fight: 5/19/2012- TKO4 Allan Green (UNR)
Next Fight: 12/8/2012- vs. Brian Magee (UNR) (at SMW)
Kessler will fight Irish fringe contender Brian Magee on December 8 in Denmark.  The fight will be at 168 it would seem.
19) Tony Averlant (8-31)
Last Fight: 3/31/2012- L*(SD12) vs. #12 Eduard Gutknecht (Robbery)
Next Fight: Unknown
I don’t know if Averlant is now considered too high-risk, low-reward after getting robbed against Gutknecht, but he sure hasn’t fought since then.
20) Ismayl Sillakh (8-94)
Last Fight: 4/27/2012- L(TKO8) vs. Denis Grachev (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Sillakh and his manager are apparently in a very bitter dispute at present, and so Sillakh may have difficulty securing another fight anytime soon.

The Week Ahead: Two significant fights in the division, both in Montreal on Saturday.  Super middleweight #4 Lucian Bute moves up to fight #16 Denis Grachev at a 170-pound catchweight, after gatekeepers Renan St. Juste and Allan Green both look to get back in the win column on the undercard.

Last Fight: 2/25/2012- UD12 Tommy Karpency (UNR)
Next Fight: 11/10/2012- vs. Ryan Coyne (UNR)
Cleverly has evidently canceled his Cardiff fight against Uzelkoff for a less dangerous matchup that will get him on American TV when he meets undefeated and untested St. Louis prospect Ryan Coyne at Staples Center in L.A. on the HBO-televised Mares-Moreno undercard.
8) Tony Bellew (15-54-54)

The Week Ahead: Fringe contender Gusmyr Perdomo of Venezuela fights journeyman Luzimar Gonzaga in Caracas on Saturday.

Light Heavyweight: 2012, Oct 15-21

Posted in Light Heavyweight, Rankings with tags , , , , , , , on October 31, 2012 by danboxing
Friday in Montreal, Colombian undefeated prospect Eleider Alvarez buzzed right through very weak Hungarian journeyman Daniel Regi, scoring a 2nd-round TKO.

The next night in Poland, fringe contender Pawel Glazewski (who should be undefeated despite being robbed against Roy Jones at cruiser), won a comfortable 10-round decision over decent Swiss journeyman Sofiane Sebihi.

Ismayl Sillakh was supposed to be in action Saturday as well, but he canceled his fight due to an apparently sudden and bitter dispute with his manager.  No changes to the rankings.

Dan’s Top 20
Champ: Andre Ward (6-6-6)
Last Fight: 9/8/2012- TKO10 Champ Chad Dawson (at SMW)
Next Fight: Unknown
Ward and Pavlik’s promoters have both confirmed that talks are underway for a February 23 fight on HBO.
1) Chad Dawson (6-333-333)
Last Fight: 9/8/2012- L(TKO10) vs. SMW Champ Andre Ward (at SMW)
Next Fight: Unknown
Most sources will still credit him with being the light heavyweight champion, but he lost a fight at or below the 175 pound limit, and thus his conqueror deserves that honor regardless of the actual weights of the fighters.
2) Bernard Hopkins (6-332-332)
Last Fight: 4/28/2012- L(MD12) vs. #2 Chad Dawson
Next Fight: Unknown
Hopkins is currently non-committal on whether or not he’ll fight again.
3) Jean Pascal (6-174-174)
Last Fight: 5/21/2011- L(UD12) vs. #1 Bernard Hopkins
Next Fight: Unknown
Pascal will come back in December following his long inactivity and hand injury (thus retaining his ranking), with venue and TV problems ensuring that the Cloud fight could not be rescheduled until 2013.  No opponent has been announced.  Pascal is on thin ice with me, though.  He didn’t have to wait as long as he did to schedule the fight with Cloud in the first place, and so if it ever appears that he is no longer returning in December, he will be promptly removed.
4) Gabriel Campillo (6-121-121)
Last Fight: 2/18/2012- L*(UD12) vs. #3 Tavoris Cloud (Robbery)
Next Fight: Unknown
No word yet on a timetable for Campillo’s recovery from an injury that forced him to withdraw from what in retrospect would have been a really intriguing fight with Sergei Kovalev.
5) Tavoris Cloud (6-164-164)
Last Fight: 2/18/2012- UD12* vs. #4 Gabriel Campillo (Robbery)
Next Fight: Unknown Date- vs. #9 Karo Murat
With Pascal’s injury and subsequent scheduling difficulties related to TV dates and the venue, Cloud will now apparently fight Karo Murat sometime in November.  If successful, the idea would be for him to reschedule the Pascal fight for next year.
6) Cornelius White (6-14-44)
Last Fight: 7/14/2012- UD12 #10 Dmitri Sukhotski
Next Fight: Unknown
White is on a tear.  Is he really top-5 good?  I wouldn’t think so, but he proves me wrong every time I feel I might be overrating him.
7) Nathan Cleverly (6-141-141)
Last Fight: 2/25/2012- UD12 Tommy Karpency (UNR)
Next Fight: 11/10/2012- vs. Ryan Coyne (UNR)
Cleverly has evidently canceled his Cardiff fight against Uzelkoff for a less dangerous matchup that will get him on American TV when he meets undefeated and untested St. Louis prospect Ryan Coyne at Staples Center in L.A. on the HBO-televised Mares-Moreno undercard.
8) Tony Bellew (14-53-53)
Last Fight: 9/8/2012- TKO9 Edison Miranda (UNR)
Next Fight: 11/17/2012- vs. Roberto Feliciano Bolonti (UNR)
Bellew now has an opponent for his appearance on the Froch-Mack undercard: Argentine Champion Roberto Feliciano Bolonti.
9) Karo Murat (6-55-76)
Last Fight: 6/2/2012- TKO7 Sandro Siproshvili (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown Date- vs. #5 Tavoris Cloud
With Pascal’s injury, Murat will get his alphabet title shot a little earlier than expected, with November being the apparent target.
10) Beibut Shumenov (6-117-121)
Last Fight: 6/2/2012- UD12 Enrique Ornelas (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Word has it that Shumenov is working on fighting gatekeeper/journeyman hybrid Nicholson Poulard in November, either in Vegas or Kazakhstan.  While it could be argued that Poulard is a bit more live of a body than Shumenov’s last 3 opponents, the step up would be marginal at best, and he’s really not at a different level than those guys.  Let’s hope this fight falls through, because Shumenov hasn’t fought a decent opponent in well over 2 years, and this would be a pathetic way to move forward in his career.
11) Yusaf Mack (6-121)
Last Fight: 7/7/2012- UD6 Sabou Ballogou (UNR)
Next Fight: 11/17/2012- vs. #1 SMW Carl Froch (at SMW)
In a fairly sudden development, Mack will drop back down to 168 to fight Carl Froch.
12) Isaac Chilemba (6-37)
Last Fight: 9/29/2012- UD8 Rayco Saunders (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Chilemba came in a bit heavy, but performed as expected, shutting out journeyman Rayco Saunders.
13) Vyacheslav Uzelkoff (6-37)
Last Fight: 7/21/2012- W(MD12) vs. Mohamed Belkacem (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Cleverly understandably skipped out on him for a shot on HBO.  No new plans announced for the Ukrainian.
14) Andrzej Fonfara (6-14)
Last Fight: 7/13/2012- UD10* SMW #16 Glen Johnson
Next Fight: 11/16/2012- vs. Tommy Karpency (UNR)
Fonfara will fight journeyman Tommy Karpency in Chicago in mid-November.
15) Jürgen Brähmer (6-26)
Last Fight: 4/21/2012- UD10 Vikapita Meroro (UNR)
Next Fight: 12/15/2012- vs. Eduard Gutknecht (UNR)
Braehmer gets a shot at very vulnerable paper titlist Eduard Gutknecht in December.  That sounds like a fight safe enough to actually show up to.
16) Denis Grachev (6-25)
Last Fight: 4/27/2012- TKO8 #15 Ismayl Sillakh
Next Fight: 11/3/2012- vs. SMW #4 Lucian Bute
Grachev will fight Lucian Bute at a 170 pound catchweight in November.
17) Dmitri Sukhotski (6-103)
Last Fight: 7/14/2012- L(UD12) vs. #16 Cornelius White
Next Fight: Unknown
The White loss must be a bitter disappointment for Sukhotski, who had been in line for a shot at an alphabet strap held by Cleverly for some time, but with Cleverly blatantly ducking him to great effect.
18) Mikkel Kessler (6-22)
Last Fight: 5/19/2012- TKO4 Allan Green (UNR)
Next Fight: 12/8/2012- vs. Brian Magee (UNR) (at SMW)
Kessler will fight Irish fringe contender Brian Magee on December 8 in Denmark.  The fight will be at 168 it would seem.
19) Tony Averlant (6-29)
Last Fight: 3/31/2012- L*(SD12) vs. #12 Eduard Gutknecht (Robbery)
Next Fight: Unknown
I don’t know if Averlant is now considered too high-risk, low-reward after getting robbed against Gutknecht, but he sure hasn’t fought since then.
20) Ismayl Sillakh (6-92)
Last Fight: 4/27/2012- L(TKO8) vs. Denis Grachev (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Sillakh and his manager are apparently in a very bitter dispute at present, and so Sillakh may have difficulty securing another fight anytime soon.

The Week Ahead: Nothing going on in the division this week.

Cruiserweight: 2012, Oct 29- Nov 4

Posted in Cruiserweight, Rankings with tags , , , , , , , on October 30, 2012 by danboxing
Guillermo Jones ducked out of his fight with mid-level journeyman Andres Taylor- scheduled for Saturday in Caracas- with what looks like a highly suspect “injury.”  Jones- who hasn’t fought since he beat the equally unimpressive Michael Marone a year ago next Monday, and who hasn’t fought anyone actually worth fighting in over 2 years- has shown to be totally undeserving of any benefit of the doubt.  That being the case, let me end any potential suspense here and now.  If he doesn’t schedule a cruiserweight fight before the end of the ratings week beginning November 5, he will, in fact, be removed for inactivity- injured or not.

In news regarding an actual fight, rising Ukrainian undefeated prospect Dmitro Kucher continued his rise on Saturday, knocking the once-formidable Steve Herelius out of the ring midway through the 2nd round.  Herelius couldn’t even get back into the ring before he was counted out.  It’s hard to determine how much credit Kucher should be given for the win.  Herelius owns a win over current #10 Firat Arslan, and was still ranked #15 when he was removed for inactivity back in February.  So clearly this performance means something.  But anytime an aging fighter has been out of the ring for over a year and a half, it is hard to say he is the same guy that fought last time around.  On Boxrec, Herelius evidently lost 55% of his ratings points between fights.  I will follow that lead, except that I feel he was underrated after his last loss, and am thus adjusting for the points a #15 fighter would have had at that point.  The result is that Herelius is accounted as a borderline top-40 gatekeeper.

Later that night in Brooklyn, Colombian undefeated prospect Santander Silgado recycled Joell Godfrey (whom he beat in his previous fight) and won by a similarly solid decision, with the average of the three cards coming out to 79-73 in his favor.  Godfrey was a short notice replacement for Utah journeyman Gary Gomez.

Finally, Eric Fields (who was briefly a ranked fighter here) continued his recent trend of fighting poor opposition by taking on 4-4 novice Kevin Franklin in Verona, New York.  With an opponent that weak, anything short of a 1st round knockout would have to be considered a disappointing result.  Unfortunately for Fields, he failed to get his guy out of there, though he did win 17 of a possible 18 rounds across the three cards.

Kucher’s win bumps him up a spot to #18, transplanting Enad Licina, who hasn’t beaten anybody particularly impressive in nearly 4 years.

Dan’s Top 20
Champ: None
1) Denis Lebedev (7-143-143)
Last Fight: 4/4/2012- KO2 Shawn Cox (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
The fight with Guillermo Jones appears to be off indefinitely.
2) Yoan Pablo Hernandez (7-123-123)
Last Fight: 9/15/2012- W*(UD12) vs. #20 Troy Ross
Next Fight: Unknown
Hernandez officially got the win over Ross, and I’m not quite willing to call it a robbery, but it’s pretty close to one.  I think you’d be pushing the limits of reason to give the fight to Hernandez, and I think that even if you managed to do so in terms of rounds won, you’d have to admit that Ross got the better of the fight overall.  Even Hernandez promoter Sauerland admits that Hernandez didn’t deserve a win, and believes a rematch is warranted.
3) Troy Ross (7-7-39)
Last Fight: 9/15/2012- L*(UD12) vs. #1 Yoan Pablo Hernandez
Next Fight: Unknown
Ross deserved to beat Hernandez.  That’s all I’ve got to say (except the more detailed statement I made above).
4) Steve Cunningham (7-437-437)
Last Fight: 9/8/2012- UD10 Jason Gavern (UNR) (at HW)
Next Fight: 12/22/2012- vs. HW #3 Tomasz Adamek (at HW)
With Odlanier Solis’ withdrawal, Cunningham has a chance to avenge his 2008 loss to Tomasz Adamek just before Christmas, at heavyweight.  He’ll retain his ranking here until the anniversary of his February 4 cruiserweight fight, or until he schedules a heavyweight fight for a date after that.
5) Marco Huck (7-308-308)
Last Fight: 5/5/2012- Draw* (MD12) vs. #7 Ola Afolabi
Next Fight: 11/3/2012- vs. #10 Firat Arslan
Huck will fight Arslan next in early November.
6) Ola Afolabi (7-190-190)
Last Fight: 5/5/2012- Draw* (MD12) vs. #4 Marco Huck
Next Fight: Unknown
One of the alphabets has mandated that Huck fight Afolabi next if he gets past Arslan.  Huck clearly has never wanted that rematch, though, and appears to have a good chance to fight a Klitschko, instead.
7) Krzysztof Wlodarczyk (7-384-384)
Last Fight: 9/22/2012- UD12 #13 Francisco Palacios
Next Fight: Unknown
There is talk of a fight with former Champ Jean-Marc Mormeck, but Wlodarczyk’s team is dismissing these rumors.
8) Lateef Kayode (7-22-102)
Last Fight: 6/2/2012- Draw (SD12) vs. ‘Roided up #3 Antonio Tarver
Next Fight: Unknown
With no mention of Kayode’s rumored fight with Drozd being made in a while, the latest news is that Kayode might be trying to move up to fight Seth Mitchell.
9) Guillermo Jones (7-109-109)
Last Fight: 11/5/2011- TKO6 Michael Marrone (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Jones pulled out of his already ridiculous match with Andres Taylor due to a highly suspect and undefined injury.  He will be removed for inactivity if he fails to schedule a fight before my November 12 update comes due.
10) Firat Arslan (7-25-68)
Last Fight: 5/11/2012- Draw* (MD12) vs. #12 Alexander Alekseev (Robbery)
Next Fight: 11/3/2012- vs. #5 Marco Huck
Long-since slated for a November rematch with Alekseev, Arslan was the subject of a surprise announcement that he would instead fight Marco Huck.
11) Danny Green (7-152)
Last Fight: 7/25/2012- TKO5 Danny Santiago (UNR)
Next Fight: 11/21/2012- vs. Shane Cameron (UNR)
Will take on Kiwi fringe contender Shane Cameron in late November.
12) B.J. Flores (7-123)
Last Fight: 10/6/2012- TKO2 David McNemar (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Flores’ level of opposition lately is consistent with that of a protected undefeated prospect rather than a veteran contender trying to get back on top.  He’s completely treading water at this point in his career.
13) Giacobbe Fragomeni (6-207)
Last Fight: 3/17/2012- Draw (MD12) vs. Silvio Branco (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Fragomeni appears to be showing his age after nearly losing to an even older man in Branco.
14) Silvio Branco (6-33)
Last Fight: 3/17/2012- Draw (MD12) vs. #10 Giacobbe Fragomeni
Next Fight: Unknown
45 year old veteran Silvio Branco got what may have been his final hurrah with a close-fought draw with top 10-ranked Giacobbe Fragomeni.
15) Mateusz Masternak (6-31)
Last Fight: 9/15/2012- TKO8 David Quinonero (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Masternak appears set to fight for the European title technically held by Alekseev next.
16) Francisco Palacios (6-83)
Last Fight: 9/22/2012- L(UD12) vs. #7 Krzysztof Wlodarczyk
Next Fight: Unknown
Very little of note left on his resume after his should-be win over Wlodarczyk was neutralized by a close but clear loss to same, and with his win over Louis Azille over 5 years old now.
17) Alexander Alekseev (7-94)
Last Fight: 5/11/2012- Draw*(MD12) vs. #19 Firat Arslan (robbery- should have been L)
Next Fight: Unknown
18) Dmitro Kucher (1-18)
Last Fight: 10/27/2012- KO2 Steve Herelius (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Kucher took out one-time contender Steve Herelius in spectacular fashion, making him definitively one to watch.
19) Enad Licina (1-123)
Last Fight: 2/4/2012- L(UD12) vs. #17 Alexander Alexeev
Next Fight: 11/10/2012- vs. Unknown Opponent
Licina, inactive since his loss to Alekseev, appears to have a fight scheduled for November 10 in Koblenz, Germany.  No opponent has been announced.
20) Danie Venter (6-6)
Last Fight: 9/22/2012- TKO4 Zack Mwekassa (UNR)
Next Fight: 11/10/2012- vs. Thabiso Mchunu (UNR)
Venter has established himself as clearly the best South African cruiserweight, and will fight for what amounts to that country’s undisputed championship in the Super 8 Tournament finals in November.

THE WEEK AHEAD: A pretty great matchup in Halle, Germany, as #5 Marco Huck takes on the resurgent #10 Firat Arslan.

Cruiserweight: 2012, Oct 22-28

Nothing going on at the 200 pound limit this week.

Dan’s Top 20
Champ: None
1) Denis Lebedev (6-142-142)
Last Fight: 4/4/2012- KO2 Shawn Cox (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
The fight with Guillermo Jones appears to be off, with Jones now looking to fight journeyman Andres Taylor instead.
2) Yoan Pablo Hernandez (6-122-122)
3) Troy Ross (6-6-38)
Last Fight: 9/15/2012- L*(UD12) vs. #1 Yoan Pablo Hernandez
Next Fight: Unknown
Ross deserved to beat Hernandez.  That’s all I’ve got to say (except the more detailed statement I made above).
4) Steve Cunningham (6-436-436)
Last Fight: 9/8/2012- UD10 Jason Gavern (UNR) (at HW)
Next Fight: 12/22/2012- vs. HW #3 Tomasz Adamek (at HW)
With Odlanier Solis’ withdrawal, Cunningham has a chance to avenge his 2008 loss to Tomasz Adamek just before Christmas, at heavyweight.  He’ll retain his ranking here until the anniversary of his February 4 cruiserweight fight, or until he schedules a heavyweight fight for a date after that.
5) Marco Huck (6-307-307)
Last Fight: 5/5/2012- Draw* (MD12) vs. #7 Ola Afolabi
Next Fight: 11/3/2012- vs. #10 Firat Arslan
Huck will fight Arslan next in early November.
6) Ola Afolabi (6-189-189)
Last Fight: 5/5/2012- Draw* (MD12) vs. #4 Marco Huck
Next Fight: Unknown
7) Krzysztof Wlodarczyk (6-383-383)
Last Fight: 9/22/2012- UD12 #13 Francisco Palacios
Next Fight: Unknown
There is talk of a fight with former Champ Jean-Marc Mormeck, but Wlodarczyk’s team is dismissing these rumors.
8) Lateef Kayode (6-21-101)
Last Fight: 6/2/2012- Draw (SD12) vs. ‘Roided up #3 Antonio Tarver
Next Fight: Unknown
With no mention of Kayode’s rumored fight with Drozd being made in a while, the latest news is that Kayode might be trying to move up to fight Seth Mitchell.
9) Guillermo Jones (6-108-108)
Last Fight: 11/5/2011- TKO6 Michael Marrone (UNR)
Next Fight: 10/27/2012- vs. Andres Taylor (UNR)
Jones has gone from the division’s #1 Contender Lebedev to mere journeyman Andres Taylor for his next fight.  Quite a drop-off.
10) Firat Arslan (6-24-67)
Last Fight: 5/11/2012- Draw* (MD12) vs. #12 Alexander Alekseev (Robbery)
Next Fight: 11/3/2012- vs. #5 Marco Huck
Long-since slated for a November rematch with Alekseev, Arslan was the subject of a surprise announcement that he would instead fight Marco Huck.
11) Danny Green (6-151)
Last Fight: 7/25/2012- TKO5 Danny Santiago (UNR)
Next Fight: 11/21/2012- vs. Shane Cameron (UNR)
Will take on Kiwi fringe contender Shane Cameron in late November.
12) B.J. Flores (6-122)
13) Giacobbe Fragomeni (5-206)
Last Fight: 3/17/2012- Draw (MD12) vs. Silvio Branco (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Fragomeni appears to be showing his age after nearly losing to an even older man in Branco.
14) Silvio Branco (5-32)
Last Fight: 3/17/2012- Draw (MD12) vs. #10 Giacobbe Fragomeni
Next Fight: Unknown
45 year old veteran Silvio Branco got what may have been his final hurrah with a close-fought draw with top 10-ranked Giacobbe Fragomeni.
15) Mateusz Masternak (5-30)
Last Fight: 9/15/2012- TKO8 David Quinonero (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Masternak appears set to fight for the European title technically held by Alekseev next.
16) Francisco Palacios (5-82)
Last Fight: 9/22/2012- L(UD12) vs. #7 Krzysztof Wlodarczyk
Next Fight: Unknown
Very little of note left on his resume after his should-be win over Wlodarczyk was neutralized by a close but clear loss to same, and with his win over Louis Azille over 5 years old now.
17) Alexander Alekseev (6-93)
Last Fight: 5/11/2012- Draw*(MD12) vs. #19 Firat Arslan (robbery- should have been L)
Next Fight: Unknown
18) Enad Licina (6-122)
Last Fight: 2/4/2012- L(UD12) vs. #17 Alexander Alexeev
Next Fight: Unknown
19) Dmitro Kucher (6-17)
Last Fight: 8/19/2012- TKO5 Geoffrey Battelo (UNR) (at HW)
Next Fight: 10/27/2012- vs. Steve Herelius (UNR)
Kucher will be fighting in Kiev on October 27 for some alphabet regional color-coded belt.  His opponent will be a bit of a blast from the past.  Steve Herelius- who stopped current #10 Firat Arslan before getting stopped by current #2 Yoan Pablo Hernandez and going inactive for 20 months.
20) Danie Venter (5-5)
Last Fight: 9/22/2012- TKO4 Zack Mwekassa (UNR)
Next Fight: 11/10/2012- vs. Thabiso Mchunu (UNR)
Venter has established himself as clearly the best South African cruiserweight, and will fight for what amounts to that country’s undisputed championship in the Super 8 Tournament finals in November.

THE WEEK AHEAD:  Four significant fights this Saturday:

In Caracas, Venezuela, #9 Guillermo Jones fights journeyman Andres Taylor- a far cry from Jones’ original opponent for the same date, #1 Denis Lebedev.

In Kiev, #19 Dmitro Kucher takes on Steve Herelius, who was my #15 contender as recently as February, when he was removed for inactivity.  He has not fought since.  This could be an interesting test for Kucher, though it may be hard to determine just how much ability Herelius lost during his 20-month hiatus.

In Brooklyn, undefeated Colombian prospect Santander Silgado battles inactive Utah journeyman Gary Gomez in an 8-rounder.

And across the Empire State in Verona, NY, Oklahoma prospect Eric Fields takes on complete novice Kevin Franklin in a 6-round affair.

Cruiserweight: 2012, Oct 15-21

Fast-rising undefeated Russian Rakhim Chakhkiev knocked Colombian journeyman Epifanio Mendoza down three times en route to a 9th round knockout victory in Hamburg on Friday.

The following night in Liverpool, gatekeeper Jon Lewis Dickinson outpointed crude but powerful journeyman Shane McPhilbin to win the British title.

Neither man was in quite deep enough to earn a ranking with their victories, but both men have set themselves up for good fights going forward.

4) Steve Cunningham (5-435-435)
Last Fight: 9/8/2012- UD10 Jason Gavern (UNR) (at HW)

So far so good for Cunningham at Heavyweight.  He’ll retain his ranking here until the anniversary of his February 4 cruiserweight fight, or until he schedules a heavyweight fight for a date after that.
5) Marco Huck (5-306-306)
Last Fight: 5/5/2012- Draw* (MD12) vs. #7 Ola Afolabi

8) Lateef Kayode (5-20-100)
Last Fight: 6/2/2012- Draw (SD12) vs. ‘Roided up #3 Antonio Tarver

THE WEEK AHEAD:  Quiet week.

Heavyweight: 2012, Oct 29- Nov 4

Posted in Heavyweight, Rankings with tags , , , , , , , on October 30, 2012 by danboxing
Franklin Lawrence’s scheduled fight with veteran journeyman Dominick Guinn from this weekend was cancelled on just a couple days’ notice for no apparent reason, and thus I am left without a significant fight to report.  No changes this week.

Dan’s Top 20 (Weeks in current position-weeks in top 10 (if applicable)-weeks in top 20)
Champ: Wladimir Klitschko (175-388-388)
Last Fight: 7/7/2012- TKO6 #11 Tony Thompson
Next Fight: 11/10/2012- vs. Mariusz Wach (UNR)
Wlad will fight on after losing his Hall of Fame trainer, Emmanuel Steward, who passed away during surgery just a couple weeks before the fight.  This could obviously impact his focus and preparation, but luckily he’s fighting the most inexperienced opponent he’s seen since 2005.
1) Vitali Klitschko (212-212-212)
Last Fight: 9/8/2012- TKO4 Manuel Charr (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
With the early indications being that Vitali’s silly sparring match with Charr being his last fight, there is now plenty of buzz that he might fight Haye in March of next year.  His upcoming election for the Kiev mayoral race is an obvious potential factor.
2) David Haye (16-16-16)
Last Fight: 7/14/2012- TKO5 #6 Dereck Chisora
Next Fight: Unknown
Haye has indicated that a fight with Vitali may be the only fight that would lure him away from re-retiring.  He may get his wish, as there is now talk of a March 2013 matchup.
3) Tomasz Adamek (16-132-132)
Last Fight: 9/8/2012- TKO5 Travis Walker (UNR)
Next Fight: 12/22/2012- vs. CW #4 Steve Cunningham
Originally scheduled to fight Odlanier Solis, Adamek will instead fight a rematch of his classic cruiserweight title fight of 4 years ago when he fights Steve Cunningham in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, after Solis pulled out.
4) Alexander Povetkin (16-262-262)
Last Fight: 9/29/2012- TKO2 Hasim Rahman (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Povetkin and his team have named Wlad, Fury, and Adamek as options for fights in the near future.  Any of those would be great, unlike many of his recent choices.  Some sources claim Wlad must fight him by February 27, but there is some dispute as to that date.
5) Marco Huck (16-36-36)
Last Fight: 5/5/2012- Draw (MD12) vs. CW #7 Ola Afolabi (at CW)
Next Fight: 11/3/2012- vs. CW #10 Firat Arslan (at CW)
Huck just signed for an alphabet defense against Arslan, kind of out of nowhere.
6) Tyson Fury (16-67-67)
Last Fight: 7/7/2012- TKO5 Vinny Maddalone (UNR)
Next Fight: 12/1/2012- vs. Unknown Opponent
Frustrated so far in his quest to find a quality opponent for December 1, Fury has now made a large offer to Denis Boytsov.  Boytsov is reportedly considering the offer, but wants to confirm that the winner would get a Klitschko shot before he accepts.
7) Eddie Chambers (20-20-20)
Last Fight: 6/16/2012- L(UD12) vs. #3 Tomasz Adamek
Next Fight: Unknown
Tyson Fury said he offered Chambers a fight on December 1.  I’m not sure if Chambers is healthy again, or if he’s not and that’s part of the reason he said no.
8) Kubrat Pulev (5-26-103)
Last Fight: 9/29/2012- KO11 Alexander Ustinov (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Pulev may be in for a fight with the Adamek-Cunningham winner, or may go straight to a shot at Wlad in early 2013.
9) Dereck Chisora (5-48-111)
Last Fight: 7/14/2012- L(TKO5) vs. David Haye (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
The Haye loss will be a huge setback for the already underrated Chisora.  Many will forget that he did clearly beat Helenius.
10) Robert Helenius (5-83-127)
Last Fight: 12/3/2011- W*(SD12) vs. #18 Dereck Chisora (Robbery)
Next Fight: 11/10/2012- vs. Sherman Williams (UNR)
Helenius’ opponent is now confirmed- journeyman Sherman Williams, who is best known for giving a very old Evander Holyfield problems a couple years ago before the fight ended early in a no-contest.
11) Odlanier Solis (16-127)
Last Fight: 5/19/2012- UD12 Konstantin Airich (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Solis pulled out of his December 22 fight with Adamek, apparently due to severe differences with his Turkish promoter Ahmet Oner, from whom he is apparently trying to separate himself.  Solis’ scheduling has been notoriously unreliable under Oner ever since he injured his knee against Vitali Klitschko.
12) Seth Mitchell (16-47)
Last Fight: 4/28/2012- TKO3 Chazz Witherspoon (UNR)
Next Fight: 11/17/2012- vs. Johnathon Banks (UNR)
Not sure why, but Mitchell’s return has been moved back about 6 weeks to November 17.
13) Ruslan Chagaev (16-311)
Last Fight: 9/1/2012- TKO7 Werner Kreiskott (UNR)
Next Fight: 12/1/2012- vs. Mike Perez (UNR)
Chagaev has signed on for a really nice crossroads fight with fast-rising undefeated Cuban Mike Perez.
14) Alexander Dimitrenko (16-94)
Last Fight: 5/5/2012- L(KO11) vs. #17 Kubrat Pulev
Next Fight: Unknown
Despite showing the heart of a quitter and the consistency of a random number generator against Pulev, Dimitrenko hangs on to a solid ranking because the other guys in his tier haven’t been winning meaningful fights lately.
15) Tony Thompson (16-127)
Last Fight: 7/7/2012- L(TKO6) vs. Champ Wladimir Klitschko
Next Fight: Unknown
In case any of you thought the first fight was a fluke, now you know for sure: Thompson really isn’t as good as Wlad Klitschko.
16) Chris Arreola (16-189)
Last Fight: 2/18/2012- KO1 Eric Molina (UNR)
Next Fight: 12/15/2012- vs. #19 Bermane Stiverne
Arreola will officially step back up in competition on December 15, when he fights Stiverne.  This should still be considered tentative, though, since no venue has been named.  It’s also not entirely clear that Arreola- who has stated his disgust with the fight’s promoter Don King in the past- has agreed to the terms.
17) Denis Boytsov (16-176)
Last Fight: 4/13/2012- UD10 Dominick Guinn (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Boytsov is currently considering a healthy offer to fight Tyson Fury on December 1 in Belfast.
18) Jean-Marc Mormeck (16-127)
Last Fight: 3/3/2012- L(TKO4) vs. Champ Wladimir Klitschko
Next Fight: Unknown
There are rumors of Mormeck dropping down to fight Wlodarczyk, but Wlodarczyk’s team is dismissing them.
19) Bermane Stiverne (16-71)
Last Fight: 4/14/2012- UD8 Willie Herring (UNR)
Next Fight: 12/15/2012- vs. #16 Chris Arreola
See Arreola’s notes above.
20) Edmund Gerber (16-26)
Last Fight: 9/15/2012- TKO4* Michael Sprott (UNR) (terrible stoppage)
Next Fight: 11/3/2012- vs.  Darnell Wilson (UNR)
Gerber has signed for a late-notice fight with Darnell Wilson for the Huck-Arslan undercard this weekend.

THE WEEK AHEAD: #20 Edmund Gerber returns from his controversial TKO win over Michael Sprott on Saturday when he fights dangerous journeyman Darnell Wilson on the Huck-Arslan undercard.  Wilson was a real force in the cruiserweight division 5 or 6 years ago, but has been losing more often than not since then.  He did spring an upset on then-top 10 ranked Juan Carlos Gomez in 2011, but Gomez was fighting with a pretty debilitating pre-existing injury, and stopped Wilson on cuts in the rematch.

Speaking of Huck, his fight with Arlsan is at Cruiser, so I’ll talk about that fight exclusively in the cruiserweight update.
