Just 6 days after he officially signed to fight Canelo Alvarez, tragedy struck Paul Williams today.  Williams was in a very serious motorcycle crash, and the initial reports are that he is likely paralyzed for life.  I know I speak for all of my readers when I say that our prayers and support are with him.  It is my sad duty to remove him this week.

 

Now to less significant matters.  Ghanaian gatekeeper Joshua Okine moved up two divisions from welterweight to fight Uruguayan journeyman Rafael Sosa Pintos in Accra, Ghana on Saturday, more-or-less dominating his visitor. 

 

David Lopez, the junior middleweight fringe contender from Mexico, moved up to middleweight, as well, in his first fight in nearly a year, winning a 10-round decision over countryman and veteran journeyman Julio Cesar Garcia in La Paz, Baja California, Mexico.

 

Williams’ injuries and removal cause everyone rated #14 and below last week to advance one place, allowing Peter Quillin to debut at #20 just in time for his fight with Winky Wright this Saturday.

Sergio has signed a contract to fight the Chavez-Lee winner, with 9/15 being the tentative date.  Recent news indicates that the contract is non-binding, but would lead to Chavez being stripped of his alphabet title if he dishonors it.  It also provides that if Lee wins, that fight would be in Argentina.

It’s evidently an open question whether the WBO will sanction Geale-Pirog.  Sturm is Geale’s backup plan if that falls through.

Adama came up short against Geale, but has nothing to be ashamed of.  He frequently took the #1 contender out of his game plan and looked entirely in his league at that lofty level.

The WBC has ordered Khurtsidze to defend his new goofy color-coded belt against gatekeeper Domenico Spada.

Andrade showed chilling power in destroying easy mark Cisneros.

Barker bowed out of opportunities to fight Murray and Pirog, and now we have a possible reason as he has apparently been injured for a while, needs surgery, and is done until the fall.

Godoy needs a lot of improvement if he’s going to fight his relative peers in the rankings.  He had more than a little trouble with crude and old Carlos Baldomir.

Barely challenged Pirog at all, but has enough mileage left on the Kirkland upset to remain ranked for the moment.
