Junior Middleweight: 2011, Nov 14-20

Argentine gatekeeper Sergio Sanders’ fight with mid-level journeyman Mateo Veron in Lanus, Argentina on Friday ended awkwardly by 3-round technical decision in favor of Veron.  To ensure fairness and consistency, however, I treat any technical decision decided in under 4 complete rounds as a no contest.

#11 Austin Trout outclassed top-level Australian journeyman Frank LoPorto so completely that LoPorto was able to both display a granite chin AND get stopped in 6.  He got hit with every punch imagineable.

#15 Manny Pacquiao won by robbery at 147 in his third fight with Juan Manuel Marquez.  The fight was 116-112 on my card, though if you gave Pacquiao every benefit of the doubt it could have been a draw.  I won’t spend too much time on it since it was at 147, though.  The main upshot for 154 is that Pacquiao hasn’t fought a junior middleweight since decisioning Antonio Margarito a year ago, and is thus removed.  This makes room, ironically, for Margarito to return at #20 after a week out.  He hasn’t fought since then either, but has a fight scheduled.  No further changes.

Dan’s Top 20 (Weeks in Current Position-Weeks in Top 10 if applicable-Weeks in Top 20)

Last Fight: 9/17/2011- TKO6 Alfonso Gomez (UNR)
Next Fight: 11/26/2011- vs. Kermit Cintron (UNR)
Canelo will look to take advantage of apparently shot fringe contender Kermit Cintron on November 26 in a Mexico Ciy bull ring.
2) Cornelius Bundrage (22-67-67)
Last Fight: 6/25/2011- UD12 #11 Sechew Powell

The latest news is that K9 may fight Latimore on New Year’s Eve.
3) James Kirkland (2-2-2)
Last Fight: 11/5/2011- TKO6 #4 Alfredo Angulo
Next Fight: Unknown
In the immediate aftermath of his huge upset win over Angulo, Lara and Ishida have both expressed interest in fighting him, but Kirkland appears to want Carlos Molina.
4) Erislandy Lara (2-19-41)
Last Fight: 7/9/2011- L*(MD12) vs. #6 Paul Williams
Next Fight: Unknown
With most of the big names at 154 apparently not all that excited about fighting him, Lara recently challenged Dmitry Pirog at middleweight.  He’s also interested in Austin Trout and James Kirkland.
5) Miguel Cotto (19-76-76)
Last Fight: 3/12/2011- TKO12 Ricardo Mayorga (UNR)
Next Fight: 12/3/2011- vs. #20 Antonio Margarito
The Margarito fight will be at a 153-pound catchweight for some reason, and will take place at Madison Square Garden.

Next Fight: Unknown
Kirkland wants him.
7) Alfredo Angulo (2-112-112)
Last Fight: 11/5/2011- L (TKO6) vs. James Kirkland (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Angulo had no shortage of guts, but appeared a bit physically overmatched against a beastly incarnation of Kirkland.
8) Prince Arron (2-27-27)
Last Fight: 5/13/2011- TKO12 #14 Sam Webb
Next Fight: 12/3/2011- vs. Brian Rose (UNR)

10) Ryan Rhodes (2-108-108)
Last Fight: 6/18/2011- L(UD12) vs. #8 Saul Alvarez
Next Fight: Unknown
Rhodes’ stock is significantly diminished after being dominated by Alvarez, but he still has a solid resume and remains in the top 10.
11) Austin Trout (2-41)
Last Fight: 11/11/2011- TKO6 Frank LoPorto (UNR)

12) Sechew Powell (2-87)
Last Fight: 6/25/2011- L(UD12) vs. #3 Cornelius Bundrage
Next Fight: Unknown Date- vs. Cory Spinks (UNR)
After Latimore turned down an eliminator for a Bundrage shot, Powell will instead be taking on Cory Spinks for that honor, it would appear.  The fight was originally rumored for Mares-Agbeko, but looks likely for the Erdei-Cloud New Year’s Eve card, instead.
13) Gabriel Rosado (2-41)
Last Fight: 9/9/2011- UD10 Keenan Collins (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Rosado had little trouble with the low-level challenge of Collins.
14) Delvin Rodriguez (2-18)
Last Fight: 7/15/2011- Draw (MD10) vs. #7 Pawel Wolak
Next Fight: 12/3/2011- vs. #9 Pawel Wolak
See Wolak’s notes, above.
15) Paul Williams (1-41)
Last Fight: 7/9/2011- W*(MD12) vs. #17 Erislandy Lara (Robbery)
Next Fight: Unknown
Williams’ promoter wants to see him fight an orthodox fighter next, but it’s increasingly likely that won’t be until 2012.
16) Vanes Martirosyan (1-24)
Last Fight: 10/29/2011- UD10 Richard Gutierrez (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Martirosyan could have made a major career move by fighting Angulo this week, but instead opted to tread water against Gutierrez.

Big-time rematch with Cotto on the horizon.

The Week Ahead: Miami plays host to two notable fights on Friday.  Cuban gatekeeper Giorbis Barthelemy fights solid journeyman Charles Whitaker, and barking gatekeeper Antwone Smith takes on journeyman Yoryi Estrella.

Saturday in Los Mochis, Mexico, undefeated but fairly untested Mexican prospect Jorge Cota gets his first test in 115-fight veteran and Mexican gatekeeper Yori Boy Campas.
