Junior Middleweight: 2011, Nov 7-13

When #4 Alfredo Angulo put James Kirkland down in the first round, it looked like Kirkland was  in for another short night.  But this was a different, Ann Wolfe-inspired version of Kirkland, as he bounced back to return the favor late in what has to be the odds-on favorite for round of the year.  In an all-action slugfest, Kirkland went on to gradually wear Angulo down with hard shots, great conditioning, and sheer power of will.  Still game but thoroughly worn down, the action was finally stopped in the 6th for a huge upset TKO for Kirkland.

The day before in Salta, Argentina, fringe contender Luis Abregu dropped normally decent journeyman Javier Mamani 3 times, including for the 10 count in the 2nd round.

And in other Saturday action, one-loss Floridian Joey Hernandez traded early-round knockdowns with gatekeeper/journeyman Elco Garcia en route to a close 12-round decision.

Kirkland returns to the rankings for the first time since he left the Ring’s version for going to jail, and he’s at #3.  Angulo slips back to #7 with the loss.  The movement bumps Erislandy Lara back to #4, and demotes everyone ranked #7 and below last week, including Austin Trout- who exits the top 10 after 21 weeks- and Antonio Margarito, who bows out of the top 20 after 7 weeks.

Dan’s Top 20 (Weeks in Current Position-Weeks in Top 10 if applicable-Weeks in Top 20)

Last Fight: 9/17/2011- TKO6 Alfonso Gomez (UNR)
Next Fight: 11/26/2011- vs. Kermit Cintron (UNR)
Canelo will look to take advantage of apparently shot fringe contender Kermit Cintron on November 26 in Cancun or Merida, Mexico.
2) Cornelius Bundrage (21-66-66)
Last Fight: 6/25/2011- UD12 #11 Sechew Powell
Next Fight: Unknown
The latest news is that K9 may fight Latimore on New Year’s Eve.
3) James Kirkland (1-1-1)
Last Fight: 11/5/2011- TKO6 #4 Alfredo Angulo
Next Fight: Unknown
In the immediate aftermath of his huge upset win over Angulo, Lara and Ishida have both expressed interest in fighting him.
4) Erislandy Lara (1-18-40)
Last Fight: 7/9/2011- L*(MD12) vs. #6 Paul Williams
Next Fight: Unknown
With most of the big names at 154 apparently not all that excited about fighting him, Lara recently challenged Dmitry Pirog at middleweight.  He’s also interested in Austin Trout and James Kirkland.
5) Miguel Cotto (18-75-75)
Last Fight: 3/12/2011- TKO12 Ricardo Mayorga (UNR)
Next Fight: 12/3/2011- vs. Antonio Margarito (UNR)
The Margarito fight will be at a 153-pound catchweight for some reason, and will take place at Madison Square Garden.
6) Carlos Molina (18-18-33)
Last Fight: 7/9/2011- UD10 #7 Kermit Cintron
Next Fight: Unknown
Had absolutely no trouble with the highly-ranked Cintron, and now he or his promoter have challenged basically everybody: Lara, Cotto, Canelo, Trout, K9, Dzinziruk, Paul Williams, and Mike Jones.
7) Alfredo Angulo (1-111-111)
Last Fight: 11/5/2011- L (TKO6) vs. James Kirkland (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Angulo had no shortage of guts, but appeared a bit physically overmatched against a beastly incarnation of Kirkland.
8) Prince Arron (1-26-26)
Last Fight: 5/13/2011- TKO12 #14 Sam Webb
Next Fight: 12/3/2011- vs. Brian Rose (UNR)
Arron takes on one-loss and still relatively untested prospect Brian Rose in Wigan, England in early December.
9) Pawel Wolak (1-35-35)
Last Fight: 7/15/2011- Draw (MD10) vs. Delvin Rodriguez (UNR)
Next Fight: 12/3/2011- vs. #14 Delvin Rodriguez
Wolak will fight Rodriguez on the Cotto-Margarito undercard in a rematch of their fight of the year candidate from July.
10) Ryan Rhodes (1-107-107)
Last Fight: 6/18/2011- L(UD12) vs. #8 Saul Alvarez
Next Fight: Unknown
Rhodes’ stock is significantly diminished after being dominated by Alvarez, but he still has a solid resume and remains in the top 10.
11) Austin Trout (1-40)
Last Fight: 6/11/2011- UD12 David Lopez (UNR)
Next Fight: 11/11/2012- vs. Frank LaPorto (UNR)
Trout was briefly set to fight Yuki Nonaka, but a hand injury has led to the essentially lateral move to another solid journeyman in Australia’s Frank LoPorto.  The fight will be televised on ShoBox.
12) Sechew Powell (1-86)
Last Fight: 6/25/2011- L(UD12) vs. #3 Cornelius Bundrage
Next Fight: Unknown Date- vs. Cory Spinks (UNR)
After Latimore turned down an eliminator for a Bundrage shot, Powell will instead be taking on Cory Spinks for that honor, it would appear.  The fight was originally rumored for Mares-Agbeko, but looks likely for the Erdei-Cloud New Year’s Eve card, instead.
13) Gabriel Rosado (1-40)
Last Fight: 9/9/2011- UD10 Keenan Collins (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Rosado had little trouble with the low-level challenge of Collins.
14) Delvin Rodriguez (1-17)
Last Fight: 7/15/2011- Draw (MD10) vs. #7 Pawel Wolak
Next Fight: 12/3/2011- vs. #9 Pawel Wolak
See Wolak’s notes, above.
15) Manny Pacquiao (1-40)
Last Fight: 5/7/2011- UD12 #15 Shane Mosley (at WW)
Next Fight: 11/12/2011- vs. LW Champ Juan Manuel Marquez (at WW)
Except in the unlikely event that he schedules a fight at 154 within 24 hours of his fight with Marquez on Saturday, Pac Man will be removed next week for a year’s inactivity at 154.
16) Paul Williams (1-40)
Last Fight: 7/9/2011- W*(MD12) vs. #17 Erislandy Lara (Robbery)
Next Fight: Unknown
Williams’ promoter wants to see him fight an orthodox fighter next, but it’s increasingly likely that won’t be until 2012.
17) Vanes Martirosyan (1-23)
Last Fight: 10/29/2011- UD10 Richard Gutierrez (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Martirosyan could have made a major career move by fighting Angulo this week, but instead opted to tread water against Gutierrez.
18) Yuri Foreman (1-110)
Last Fight: 3/12/2011- L (RTD6) vs. Pawel Wolak (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Foreman’s career currently hangs in the balance, and he reportedly is not sure whether or not to continue fighting.
19) Lukas Konecny (1-13)
Last Fight: 5/27/2011- UD12 Hussein Bayram (UNR)
Next Fight: 2/?/2012- vs. Zaurbek Baysangurov (UNR)
Konecny has agreed to fight Baysangurov in February.  The fight will either be in Moscow, Grozny, or Kiev.
20) Deandre Latimore (1-12)
Last Fight: 4/16/2011- UD8 Dennis Sharpe (UNR) (at MW)
Next Fight: Unknown
Latimore may be fighting Bundrage on New Year’s Eve on a Showtime broadcast.

The Week Ahead: Friday in Lanus, Argentina, gatekeeper Sergio Sanders does battle with mid-level journeyman Mateo Veron.  That same night, #11 Austin Trout takes on Australian gatekeeper-journeyman ‘tweener Frank LoPorto in El Paso, Texas.

Of course on Saturday, #15 Manny Pacquiao fights Juan Manuel Marquez in their 3rd meeting.  This fight will be at Welter, though.  The following day will be the anniversary of Pacquiao’s lone victory over a junior middleweight, and therefore he will be removed next week unless he shocks the world by scheduling a fight at this weight by then.
