Junior Middleweight: 2012, Sep 17-23

In the week’s biggest fight at 154, Saul Alvarez pretty much just imposed his will on welterweight contender Josesito Lopez.  He was just plain too big and strong, knocking Lopez down one time each in rounds 2 through 4, and convincing Joe Cortez to stop the fight in the 5th.  I do have a gripe (as is often the case anytime I have the misfortune to watch Cortez work lately) with the stoppage, as Cortez chose to inject himself at a moment when Lopez was totally in control of his faculties and defense, and appeared to be attempting a rope-a-dope type tactic.

One-loss Cleveland prospect Willie Nelson won a narrow unanimous decision over undefeated but less proven prospect John Jackson of the Virgin Islands on the Martinez-Chavez undercard.  Sadly it was not televised, and thus I cannot comment on the performances or the scoring.

No changes this week.

The Week Ahead: Friday in Antwerp, Belgium, we find a rematch between Haitian gatekeeper Jimmy Colas and good Ghanaian journeyman Jackson Osei Bonsu.  Bonsu won a close 8-round decision in the first meeting in November 2011 when both fighters were squarely in the journeyman category.  Colas has progressed since then, while Bonsu has basically tread water.  Still, the winner will likely end up as something close to a fringe contender.

Later that night in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, #10 Gabriel Rosado takes on gatekeeper Charles Whittaker in an NBC Sports-televised tilt.

Finally, Saturday in Buenos Aires, gatekeeper Jorge Heiland takes on journeyman Mateo Veron, who is currently overrated due to his robbery win against Guido Pitto, with boxrec ranking him in the top 50 despite his recent loss to Javier Maciel.
