Junior Middleweight: 2012, Sep 24-30
Friday in Antwerp, adopted Belgian journeyman Jackson Osei Bonsu won the rematch of his prior win over France-based Haitian gatekeeper Jimmy Colas, dominating Colas to a 12-round decision.
Later that night in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, #10 Gabriel Rosado took care of business against gatekeeper Charles Whittaker, stopping the veteran in the 10th of a scheduled 12.
Saturday in Buenos Aires, gatekeeper Jorge Heiland came on strong late in his fight with journeyman Mateo Veron to edge out a majority decision win over 8 rounds. Veron appeared to have too much for him early on, beating Heiland to the punch and getting through with the noticeably heavier shots. But as Veron tired, Heiland came on, apparently limiting the damage (given the half-point Argentine scoring system) in the 4th and 5th, and begginging to dominate in the 6th. Down a point on my card going into the final round, Heiland suddenly dropped Veron early in that stanza with a short, wicked head shot that left Veron facedown on the canvas for a good 7 seconds, though he didn’t fight like he was that hurt afterwards, giving about as well as he took for the remainder of the fight. But the knockdown was enough to earn Heiland a victory on 2 of the 3 cards. I had him winning by a mere half-point.
No changes to the rankings. After losing to Maciel and deserving to lose to Pitto, I didn’t view Veron as a top 50 fighter going into this weekend, and thus Heiland just kinda held serve, himself barely top 50 at the outset. Both Colas and Bonsu are and/or were just a step above journeymen themselves, so Bonsu will need another good win or two to really get into the mix. As for Rosado, his ability to advance past #10 at the moment is handicapped substantially by the fact that he has been destroyed by the guy ranked immediately above him in the past. Angulo’s loss in his last fight and his inactivity make it close, but in the final analysis Rosado would probably need at least a top 15-type win added to his record to make that move.
