Junior Middleweight: 2012, Nov 19-25
One-loss Miami prospect Joey Hernandez fought in his hometown against short-notice opponent and low-level journeyman James Winchester on ShoBox, and came away with a comfortable if unimpressive decision. Winchester managed to win the first and last round, plus one other on a single card (I expect it was probably the third, in which Hernandez also suffered a point deduction for hitting on the break). Despite coming up with the win, Hernandez proved himself- at least to my eyes- to be a slow and out of shape bar-brawler type. He also came in 2 pounds over 154, for whatever that’s worth.
Two other notables were scheduled to see action this week- #19 Roberto Garcia against Cuban prospect Inocente Fiz, and inactive former contender Yuri Foreman against nobody in particular- but neither fight came off as scheduled.
No changes to the rankings this week.

The Week Ahead: A few compelling fights to report this week. Saturday in Manchester, England, #12 Sergey Rabchenko defends his European title against one-loss French prospect Cedric Vitu.
Later that night, #16 Carlos Quintana takes on undefeated prospect Keith Thurman in Ontario, California. Thurman figures as more of a welterweight, but is a vaunted puncher at that weight. Should be a very telling match-up, one way or the other.
And on the non-televised undercard, wonder twin #1 (in terms of achievement) Jermell Charlo gets a showcase against low-level journeyman Dashon Johnson.
