Junior Middleweight: 2013, Jan 28- Feb 3

Yuri Foreman returned on Wednesday from virtual retirement, shutting out novice Missouri journeyman Brandon Baue over 6 rounds.  This is enough to make Foreman active at 154 again, and his streak of impressive performances from ’08 and ’09 (culminating with a dominant decision over an 8th-ranked Daniel Santos) is enough to regain him a ranking at #17, driving Brian Rose out of his #20 spot after 60 consecutive weeks in the rankings.

Demetrius Andrade was in action against gatekeeper Freddy Hernandez on Friday, picking up a nice win on ShoBox by dominating that fight.  The problem?  He missed the contracted weight of 154 by a half-pound, and as such he still has never had a significant win while weighing 154 or less.  He is therefore still technically not eligible for a ranking at this weight.  Unfortunately for him, the fight also has no effect on his 160 ranking, since his opponent did make weight.  This fight will be worth something should he ever get an eligible win, but on its own, it is completely worthless for rankings purposes.

Meanwhile, fellow undefeated Jermell Charlo did manage to get his first significant win at the weight, dropping gatekeeper Harry Joe Yorgey 3 times in dominating and ultimately scoring an 8th-round knockout.

Foreman’s return and the resulting shift is the only change this week.

The Week Ahead: The week’s key fight is on Friday in Chicago, where #2 Carlos Molina meets #11 Cory Spinks in a fight that will either reinforce the status quo or cause a major shake-up, depending on who wins.

The ESPN2-televised undercard features former star Jose Luis Castillo- now a welterweight gatekeeper who roughly translates to a borderline top-50 fighter at 154, as well- against gatekeeper Antwone Smith.  To be honest, I’m not 100% sure if this will be contested at 147 or 154, or somewhere in between.  Smith was slated for a fight at 147 in his last fight, but failed to make weight.

On Saturday, Japanese welterweight prospect Yoshihiro Kamegai ventures to a junior middleweight contract weight for his stay-busy fight with low-level Mexican journeyman Jose Alberto Leal in Tokyo.

#20 Anthony Mundine is also in action, but since he’s in a middleweight fight, I’ll only mention it here to the extent it affects the 154 rankings, if at all.
