Junior Middleweight: 2013, May 20-26

Posted in Junior Middleweight, Rankings with tags , , , , , , , on June 21, 2013 by danboxing
Both of the favorites on Saturday came out on top.  In London, undefeated prospect Larry Ekundayo moved to 6-0 against more experienced yet less advanced French prospect Howard Cospolite, winning all but one round in the opinion of the referee and sole judge.

Across the pond in Atlantic City, undefeated prospect Shawn Porter looked pretty spectacular against the slow but durable Phil Lo Greco.  His speed, quickness, and footwork are all clearly top-notch.  I gave him every round, plus knockdowns he scored in rounds 8 and 10.  Lo Greco may have nicked round 3, but that’s splitting hairs.

No changes.

Dan’s Top 20 (Weeks in Current Position-Weeks in Top 10 if applicable-Weeks in Top 20)
Champ: None
1) Carlos Molina (16-98-113)
Last Fight: 2/1/2013- UD12 #11 Cory Spinks
Next Fight: Unknown
Ishe Smith says he plans to offer Molina a shot at his alphabet belt, and has since reported that the fight is almost signed.
2) Saul Alvarez (16-116-131)
Last Fight: 4/20/2013- W* (UD12) vs. #3 Austin Trout
Next Fight: Unknown
Canelo wants Floyd next.  That fight had already appeared set for September up until a few weeks before he fought Trout.  Floyd says he wants the fight at 147, which might be a big ask of Alvarez at this point.
3) Austin Trout (13-51-120)
Last Fight: 4/20/2013- L* (UD12) vs. #2 Saul Alvarez
Next Fight: Unknown
Trout wants a rematch of his very dubious loss to Alvarez.  He certainly deserves it.
4) Erislandy Lara (13-98-120)
Last Fight: 11/10/2012- D* (TD9) vs. #15 Vanes Martirosyan (robbery- should be win)
Next Fight: 6/8/2013- vs. #8 Alfredo Angulo
Lara will fight Angulo on Showtime, June 8 in Carson, California.
5) Ishe Smith (13-13-13)
Last Fight: 2/23/2013- W (MD12) vs. #3 Cornelius Bundrage
Next Fight: Unknown
See Molina’s notes, above.
6) Miguel Cotto (3-155-155)
Last Fight: 12/1/2012- L (UD12) vs. #8 Austin Trout
Next Fight: Unknown
Cotto has laid out the plans for the rest of his career.  He says he’ll fight in October or November, twice in 2014, and then retire.
7) Cornelius Bundrage (3-146-146)
Last Fight: 2/23/2013- L (MD12) vs. Ishe Smith (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Bundrage should probably retire after how awful he looked against Smith.
8) Alfredo Angulo (3-191-191)
Last Fight: 12/15/2012- UD10 Jorge Silva (UNR)
Next Fight: 6/8/2013- vs. #4 Erislandy Lara
After it looked for awhile that he might fight Rosado next, Angulo will instead battle #4 Lara in Carson, California in early June.
9) Gabriel Rosado (3-9-120)
Last Fight: 5/4/2013- L* (SD10) vs. J’Leon Love (UNR) (at MW)
Next Fight: Unknown
In addition to the fight result barely being credible to begin with, it turns out Love was on a banned diuretic that helped him make weight at 160 (which he managed to do only by the skin of his teeth).  Most likely this will end up as a no-contest, thus adding even more reasons for me to not hold it against Rosado’s ranking at 154.
10) Sergey Rabchenko (3-3-49)
Last Fight: 3/30/2013- KO2 Adriano Nicchi (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Rabchenko might be fighting Italian prospect Emanuele Della Rosa on July 13 in Monaco.
11) Delvin Rodriguez (3-97)
Last Fight: 2/15/2013- TKO6 George Tahdooahnippah (UNR) (at MW)
Next Fight: 5/24/2013- vs. Freddy Hernandez (UNR)
Rodriguez will fight gatekeeper Freddy Hernandez on May 24, on Friday Night Fights.
12) Lukas Konecny (3-93)
Last Fight: 3/23/2013- W (TD12) vs. Karim Achour (UNR) (at MW)
Next Fight: Unknown
13) Keith Thurman (3-26)
Last Fight: 3/9/2013- UD12 #? WW Jan Zaveck (at WW)
Next Fight: Unknown Date- vs. Diego Chaves (UNR) (at WW)
Thurman will be back on either July 20 or 27 against undefeated Argentine prospect Diego Chaves, again at Welterweight.
14) Vanes Martirosyan (3-103)
Last Fight: 11/10/2012- D* (TD9) vs. #6 Erislandy Lara (robbery- should be L)
Next Fight: Unknown
Martirosyan was set to fight Javier Maciel on April 6 in China, but broke his thumb.
15) Yuri Foreman (3-17)
Last Fight: 4/6/2013- UD6 Gundrick King (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Foreman is keeping his comeback at a very low level for the time being.
16) Sechew Powell (3-166)
Last Fight: 6/1/2012- L (TKO9) vs. #10 Gabriel Rosado
Next Fight: Unknown
17) Willie Nelson (3-12)
Last Fight: 3/1/2013- TKO1 Michael Medina (UNR)
Next Fight: 6/29/2013- vs. Unknown Opponent
Nelson is set to return on the Golovkin-Macklin undercard on June 29, but no opponent yet.  He was rumored to fight Joshua Clottey, but those rumors appear false.
18) Brian Rose (3-9)
Last Fight: 4/20/2013- TKO12 Joachim Alcine (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Rose has officially vacated his British title.
19) Guido Pitto (3-4)
Last Fight: 4/27/2013- W* (SD12) vs. Jack Culcay (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
It took an “upset” over highly-touted prospect Culcay for Pitto to get the recognition he earned but was denied against Veron.
20) Jack Culcay (3-3)
Last Fight: 4/27/2013- L* (SD12) vs. Guido Pitto (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Most see Culcay’s squeaker of a loss to Pitto to be a major setback in his career.  Not I.  First, he barely lost it, if at all.  Second, he held his own with a true and more proven fringe contender, who was underrated due to a robbery.

The Week Ahead:  #11 Delvin Rodriguez returns on Friday Night Fights this week, taking on gatekeeper Freddy Hernandez in Uncasville, Connecticut.

20) Jack Culcay (2-2)
Last Fight: 4/27/2013- L* (SD12) vs. Guido Pitto (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Most see Culcay’s squeaker of a loss to Pitto to be a major setback in his career.  Not I.  First, he barely lost it, if at all.  Second, he held his own with a true and more proven fringe contender, who was underrated due to a robbery.

The Week Ahead:  Saturday in London, Nigerian-born local resident Larry Ekundayo- a 6-0 prospect that has already beaten the likes of Craig McEwan and Kris Carslaw and won Prizefighter- takes on much less-proven 8-1-1 French prospect Howard Cospolite.

Later that night in Atlantic City, it’s a battle of undefeated (welterweight) prospects as Shawn Porter meets Phil Lo Greco at a 150 pound contract weight.  Lo Greco is not advanced enough to help Porter toward any kind of a ranking.  Lo Greco, if successful, could really make some hay, though.

Junior Middleweight: 2013, May 6-12

Before I get to the usual business this week, I must apologize and correct the record.  Back in late February, I noticed that I had missed a fight between Michel Soro and Kris Carslaw, and determined that- with Carslaw having arguably beaten Brian Rose- Soro’s win in that fight amounted to a victory over a solid fringe contender.  That being the case, I reasoned that- combined with a very debatable loss to Baysangurov- Soro deserved to be ranked as of that date.  What I failed to notice at that point was that Carslaw had, between the Rose and Soro fights, lost to a 2-0 fighter in the second round of a Prizefighter tournament, and was thus nowhere near the top 25 fighter I imagined him to be.

I had made Soro’s erroneous ranking retroactive to the Carslaw fight, though I never physically changed the 6 weeks of rankings between the fight and the week I noticed it.  I now realize that Soro should always have been ranked behind Charlie Ota and thus never would have cracked the rankings.  While I’m again not going to edit the months worth of rankings affected, I will post the rankings in relevant part that SHOULD have existed on those dates, and these should be considered official, the posts themselves notwithstanding.

For the January 14 to February 18 updates, they should be taken at face value, since they were correct to begin with, and never were edited to reflect the fallacious revisions.  The first incorrect update, as posted, was February 25.  The #19 and #20 contenders should respectively have been Roberto Garcia and Anthony Mundine.  On March 4, Mundine should have been bumped out, with Garcia falling to #20.  Garcia should have remained at #20 until March 25, when he (as well as James Kirkland) was removed for inactivity.  At that point, Mundine should have re-entered at #19, while Brian Rose returned at #20.  The next three updates would have been the same.  On April 22, Mundine would have been removed for inactivity at 154, which should have led to Rose moving up to #19, and Charlie Ota debuting at #20.  Ota’s hidden stint in the top 20 lasted only that one week, as the April 29 update finds Guido Pitto displacing him at #20, bringing us to this week.

In the most significant actual junior middleweight fight of the week, fringe contender Michel Soro won a unanimous 97-93 decision over decent journeyman Frederic Serre to pick up the vacant French title.

In a complete joke of a fight in Accra, Ghana, local top 50 fighter Joshua Okine beat up on 0-2 bum Alaba Okusote, knocking him down in both the first and the second before Okusote retired between the 2nd and 3rd.  But it wasn’t enough that he was facing a winless opponent.  Okine also came in as a middleweight at 158, giving him an official 9 pound weight advantage over the hapless Okusote, who came in at just 149.

Floyd Mayweather won a decision on Saturday against Robert Guerrero.  Some are inexplicably lauding this effort as Mayweather’s masterpiece.  I didn’t see it as such.  It was a clear win, but it wasn’t even a really solid one as I saw it.  I had it 115-113, though I acknowledge that I gave Guerrero all the toss-up rounds, of which I felt there were 3.

#10 Gabriel Rosado was the victim of a very questionable decision on the undercard, at middleweight against Mayweather protege J’Leon Love.  The only thing that can be said with any certainty is that both guys clearly won 3 rounds at least, that Love was dropped once, and that old judge Herb Santos had no intention of being fair to Rosado.  That being said, 4 of the 10 rounds were toss-ups, and the fight could have gone either way.  Since the fight was not at 154, and since Rosado never has his best outings at 160, combined with the fact that I thought he won the fight anyway, I will not allow the result to affect Rosado’s ranking here.

What does affect the rankings is the fact that as of Sunday, Mayweather has not fought at 154 in a year, and has no fight scheduled. Floyd is therefore removed.  This allows everyone ranked #7 and below last week to move up, which brings about Sergey Rabchenko’s debut in the top 10.  The #20 vacancy is claimed by Jack Culcay of Germany, who recently fought to what very easily could have been a draw against Argentina’s Guido Pitto (now #19), in a fight in which Pitto eked out a victory on 2 of the 3 official cards.

Junior Middleweight: 2013, Apr 29- May 5

Posted in Junior Middleweight, Rankings with tags , , , , , , , on June 21, 2013 by danboxing
In what was only an upset because of where it was fought, fringe contending Argentine prospect Guido Pitto  eked out a split decision win in a 12-rounder in Hamburg over local favorite and undefeated prospect Jack Culcay on Saturday.  The fight was very very close.  I had it a draw, having given Culcay both of the toss-up rounds (9 and 11).  The fight should have been either a draw or a majority decision.  It was a split decision only because judge Ingo Barrabas gave a clear Pitto round to Culcay (my guess would be round 8- the only remotely close one besides the two toss-ups), and had it 115-113 for Culcay.  Howard John Foster and Philippe Verbecke should be given credit for scoring the fight fairly (115-113 and 116-112 Pitto, respectively) despite the setting and the promoter.  Nevertheless, I will treat it as essentially a draw, with the barest edge to Pitto, since I did have it a draw.  No complaints about Pitto getting the decision, though.  If nothing else, he deserved the benefit of the doubt after having his “0” stolen 3 fights earlier in a robbery loss against Mateo Veron.

This fight really elevates both guys in my eyes, but both fall just shy of eclipsing #20 Michel Soro to claim a ranking.  No changes.

Junior Middleweight: 2013, Apr 22-28

An unsatisfying result marred a huge fight on Saturday.  #2 Saul Alvarez was mostly passive, trying to counter off the ropes while Trout pressed the fight.  He did manage to drop Trout in the 7th, and wasn’t getting blown out by any means, as his superior power and sound defense came close to negating Trout’s punch output and ring generalship.  On my card, though, it fell short of getting the job done.  I had the fight 115-112 for Trout.

There were enough close rounds to where the fight could have somewhat reasonably been scored anywhere between 116-111 Alvarez and 116-112 Trout.  But in each close round I gave Trout, the clean effective punching was close to even, while Trout won ring generalship and effective aggressiveness by a mile.  For that reason, I feel stronger about my opinion that the wrong guy won the fight than I usually do in cases like this.  I honestly view this as a true robbery in my own mind.  Yet in the moment, I did mark those rounds as close.  When I do that, it means I’m willing to defer to an official judge that disagrees with me on that round.  I’m not happy about it, but I can’t be consistent and overturn the result here, even though I think overall that Trout clearly won the fight.  And so consistent with my established practice in cases of a result I don’t agree with but I technically classify as reasonable, I will treat it essentially as a draw, with the slightest edge to the official winner, Canelo.

A clear win for either guy would have gotten that guy past Molina and into the #1 spot.  But as it is, it might actually tighten Molina’s grip on the #1 spot.  When Molina fought #3 contender James Kirkland, he was a clear winner (aside from the fight being prematurely ended by referee error).  When Canelo fought #3 contender Trout, he managed only a very murky decision, and since he was the official winner, I’m obligated to rank him ahead of Trout.  Giving Canelo credit only for a draw, Molina still has two wins as good or better than Canelo’s best, and all have come since Canelo’s best.  The only appropriate solution is for each member of the top 3 to remain in place, as unsatisfying as that is after such a theoretically important match-up.

In other Saturday action, fringe contender Brian Rose got his biggest win since winning his British title by stopping fellow fringe contender Joachim Alcine early in the 12th round in Blackpool, England.

In the also-also-ran category, gatekeeper Frank Haroche Horta stopped weak Polish journeyman Mariusz Biskupski in the 5th of a scheduled 6 in France.

Backtracking to Friday, one-loss Virgin Islands prospect John Jackson got the biggest win of his career against undefeated Minnesota prospect Ceresso Fort.  Fort won at most 2 of the 8 rounds (though judge Lynne Carter erroneously found a third to give him), and was getting just plain beat up in the final stanza.  Unfortunately, the fight was contested at a 155 pound contract weight.  Jackson came in just a quarter pound over 154.  Since he was more than 154 and has no other significant wins at the weight, I can’t consider him eligible for a ranking.  Practically speaking that’s not a big deal, since this win wouldn’t have gotten him into the top 20 anyway, and since it will certainly be considered if and when he adds an eligible win to his resume.

So in the end, despite there being 3 well-matched fights involving top 50 contenders on the week, the only change is that Brian Rose reclaims a ranking at #19, which pushes Michel Soro back to #20.  Anthony Mundine is forced out (or removed for failing to make 154 in the last 18 months, depending on how you want to look at it) after 4 consecutive weeks.

Next Fight: 5/4/2013- vs. Frederic Serre (UNR)
Soro’s fight with Serre for the French title has been postponed to May 4.

The Week Ahead:  Saturday in Hamburg, we find a battle of top prospects.  The home fighter is Jack Culcay, an undefeated prospect who has, with his overall body of work, positioned himself as the equivalent of a top 25 fighter despite not having any wins that would make him eligble for top 20 consideration here.  The underdog is underrated Argentine Guido Pitto.  Pitto technically has a loss on his record, but it’s only because he was blatantly robbed against countryman Mateo Veron- who is incidentally the best opponent, by far, that either man has fought.  The winner could very well claim a spot in the rankings.

Even if this week’s fights don’t force him out, Mundine will be removed next week unless he schedules a fight at 154, since he hasn’t made 154 in 18 months.

The Week Ahead: The big one this week is #2 Canelo Alvarez vs. #3 Austin Trout.  Many are touting this as being for the legitimate championship, and it is certainly close.  But I subscribe to the time-tested theory that you can’t have a championship fight without the #1 contender being involved.  I didn’t put Carlos Molina in that lofty position lightly.  The only way you could have Molina anywhere below #1 logically would be to accept the robbery disqualification he suffered against James Kirkland as legitimate.  Even so, it is a wonderful fight, and should give us a clear #1 contender.

Earlier that night in Blackpool, England, fringe contender and British champion Brian Rose looks to move up to the world level against fellow fringe contender Joachim Alcine, who comes off a quick knockout loss to Matthew Macklin at 160 last fall.

The same night in Clichy la Garenne, France, local gatekeeper Frank Haroche Horta returns after less than a 3-week layoff against weak Polish journeyman Mariusz Biskupski.

Friday in Atlantic City, undefeated Minnesota prospect Ceresso Fort battles fellow prospect John Jackson of the Virgin Islands (whose only loss was to current #18 Willie Nelson) on Friday Night Fights.

#16 Yuri Foreman got a shutout on all three cards in his 6-rounder against low-level Alabama journeyman Gundrick King on Thursday.  One of those cards came from John McKaie and thus hardly counts, but we’ll call it a shutout out of trust for the other two judges.

Fringe contender Charlie Ota also got a dominant win, posting a 12-round shutout on both of the non-Korean cards against Korean journeyman Kyung-Suk Kwak (118-109 according to the Korean judge).

#14 Lukas Konecny got a win against a mediocre opponent at 160.  I’ve detailed it in my 160 update.

The big news in the division this week comes from the inactivity of #8 James Kirkland.  He hasn’t fought in a year, has nothing scheduled, and seems to be shelved for the foreseeable future due to legal wrangling with his entire team.  With his exit, everyone ranked #9 and below last week moves up, including Gabriel Rosado, who resumed a top 10 spot after a month out.  The vacancy at #20 would have been filled by Roberto Garcia, except that he, too, has been out a year as of this week.  That leaves us with Anthony Mundine, who will be removed in about 3 weeks, himself, if he doesn’t schedule something at 154.

Junior Middleweight: 2013, Mar 18-24

Undefeated Canadian Adam Trupish was shockingly upset by 7th round knockout on Friday in Richmond, British Columbia.  Journeyman Dashon Johnson was the one to do it.  The fight was actually contested at middleweight.  Johnson has enough bad losses on his record to ensure that he is nowhere near a ranking in either division, though.  No changes.
