Welterweight: 2014, Mar 17-23

Gatekeeper Kermit Cintron got a unanimous 96-94 win over 2-loss fringe prospect Ronald Cruz from Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.  It didn’t air along with the normal card, but will be featured on Fight Night Future Stars.  If I don’t agree with the cards upon watching it, I’ll update this.  The fight was contested at 148 pounds, and neither guy has a significant win at or under 147 in the last 5 years, so there’s no effect on the rankings possible here.

One change this week anyway, though.  #19 Ruslan Provodnikov is removed, since he’s been campaigning at 140 since the Bradley fight a year ago.  Leonard Bundu moves up to #19, while Jo Jo Dan returns to the rankings at #20 for the first time since he was forced out on December 16.

Kell Brook’s fight this weekend was contested at junior middle, and has been discussed there.  It wasn’t at high enough a level to get him past Robert Guerrero, at any rate.

Last Fight: 12/14/2013- L (TKO9) vs. #13 Keith Thurman

His results are now decidedly mixed, but I suspect Soto Karass will continue to get decent TV fights, since his fights are almost always entertaining, and  always a test for his opponent.

The Week Ahead:
Wednesday
Jeff Horn vs. Rivan Cesaire; Broadbeach, Australia; Fox (Australia)
Horn, a very precocious Australian prospect, enters at just 6-0-1, but he’s already a top 50 fighter.  Cesaire is nothing particularly special, and by no means a step up for Horn, as he’s something along the lines of a mid-level journeyman, originally from Cameroon.

Friday
Teerachai Kratingdaenggym vs. Behzod Nabiev; Bueng Kan, Thailand; TV Unknown
Teerachai- aka Tewa Kiram- is an undefeated Thai prospect, and he’ll be teeing off on low-level Uzbek prospect Nabiev, who ought to have no hope.

Saturday
Jorge Paez, Jr. vs. Vivian Harris; Monterrey, Mexico; Azteca (US)
35-year old Harris is long past his prime, having been knocked out in recent years by the likes of Brian Rose and Ed Paredes, and having won only 2 of his last 9 fights.  Paez, despite 4 losses on his record, feels like a prospect.  If he’s worthy of that title (or even to that of gatekeeper to which he might otherwise be entitled), he should handle Harris comfortably.
