Super Middleweight: 2012, Feb 13-19

Tom Emanski must have gotten ahold of the Super Middleweights and taught them something, because we’ve had back 2 back 2 back slow weeks.  For folks who weren’t watching American TV commercials about 5 years ago or so, sorry for the inside joke.

Dan’s Top 20
Champ: Andre Ward (9-143-143)
Last Fight: 12/17/2011- UD12 #2 Carl Froch
Next Fight: Unknown
A little bit of a disappointing batch of initial rhetoric coming out of the Ward camp.  While Bute says he is willing to travel to Oakland to fight Ward, Ward himself seems more interested in Kessler.  Normally I wouldn’t knock a Champ-#3 contender matchup, but we’ve already got that one figured out.  He’s also said he’s willing to fight J.C. Chavez in Mexico.
1) Lucian Bute (9-305-305)
Last Fight: 11/5/2012- UD12 #13 Glen Johnson
Next Fight: 4/14/2012- vs. Unknown Opponent
Bute has said he will fight April 14 with or without Froch, but the word is that Froch-Bute is still not dead.
2) Carl Froch (9-296-296)
Last Fight: 12/17/2011- L(UD12) vs. #1 Andre Ward
Next Fight: Unknown
The word is that the Bute fight is still possible.  Another possibility is an IBF eliminator with #16 Librado Andrade.
3) Mikkel Kessler (9-375-375)
Last Fight: 6/4/2011- TKO6 Mehdi Bouadla (UNR)
Next Fight: 4/14/2012- vs. #4 Robert Stieglitz
The big fight between Kessler and Stieglitz finally has a date: April 14.
4) Robert Stieglitz (9-129-129)
Last Fight: 1/14/2012- UD12 Henry Weber (UNR)
Next Fight: 4/14/2012- vs. #3 Mikkel Kessler
Now fully tuned-up, Stieglitz is ready for Kessler in April.
5) Thomas Oosthuizen (9-37-85)
Last Fight: 11/23/2011- TKO11 Francisco Sierra (UNR)
Next Fight: 3/3/2012- vs. Serge Yannick (UNR)
Oosthuizen is set to fight one-loss fringe contending prospect Serge Yannick of Australia by way of Cameroon in early March.
6) Arthur Abraham (9-121-121)
Last Fight: 1/14/2012- KO5 Pablo Farias (UNR)
Next Fight: 3/31/2012- vs. Unknown Opponent
Staying admirably busy, Abraham will fight an opponent to be announced in Kiel at the end of March.
7) Dimitri Sartison (9-81-85)
Last Fight: 11/12/2011- W(MD8) vs. Arturs Kulikauskis (UNR) (at LHW)
Next Fight: 4/21/2012- vs. Karoly Balzsay (UNR)
Sartison is taking a step back up to the fringe contender level in April.  If his knee isn’t close to 100% (which it didn’t appear to be against journeyman Kulikauskis), Balzsay is the right level of opponent to capitalize.
8) Peter Quillin (9-42-42)
Last Fight: 11/5/2011- TKO6 Craig McEwan (UNR) (at MW)
Next Fight: Unknown
Quillin may be fighting a comebacking Winky Wright May 5 in Vegas.
9) Adonis Stevenson (9-10-10)
Last Fight: 12/10/2011- TKO9 #12 Aaron Pryor, Jr.
Next Fight: 2/18/2012- vs. #18 Jesus Gonzales
Stevenson is doing a nice job of staying busy, which is a very good idea for a 34-year-old rising contender.  He’ll now face #18 Jesus Gonzales on February 18.
10) Sakio Bika (9-9-254)
Last Fight: 12/3/2011- RTD3 Alfredo Contreras (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Avoided removal by the skin of his teeth, but he’s going to start plummeting any month now if he doesn’t beat someone decent.
11) Andy Lee (9-49)
Last Fight: 10/1/2011- UD10 #14 Bryan Vera
Next Fight: 3/10/2012- vs. Alexis Hloros (UNR)
After chasing after numerous quality opponents hoping to make a fight on St. Patty’s day, Lee is settling for a very weak journeyman– the week before.  That has to be disappointing for the Irishman.  The fight will be in Detroit.
12) Anthony Dirrell (9-11)
Last Fight: 12/2/2011- TKO4 Renan St. Juste (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Finally stepped up to the fringe contender level against St. Juste.  Verdict: not too shabby.
13) Mouhamed Ali Ndiaye (9-14)
Last Fight: 11/11/2011- TKO12 Andrea Di Luisa (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Dominated and stopped a bona fide fringe contender in Di Luisa, and earned a nice ranking in the process.
14) Glen Johnson (9-67)
Last Fight: 11/5/2011- L(UD12) vs. #3 Lucian Bute
Next Fight: Unknown
The Bute fight was the only one of Johnson’s recent career that wasn’t really close.  Bute is certainly a top fighter, but it could be that the Road Warrior is starting to wind down a bit.
15) Bryan Vera (9-54)
Last Fight: 10/1/2011- L(UD10) vs. #15 Andy Lee
Next Fight: Unknown
Totally outclassed by Lee in the rematch of a fight he won last time around.
16) Librado Andrade (9-25)
Last Fight: 8/27/2011- TKO3 Matt O’Brien (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
The news that the Don George fight will be rescheduled is starting to look a bit outdated, and now there’s talk of an IBF eliminator with Froch if the Englishman’s clash with Bute can’t be salvaged.
17) Aaron Pryor, Jr. (9-41)
Last Fight: 12/10/2011- L(TKO9) vs. Adonis Stevenson (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Well, it’s clear that he can’t play with at least one of the big boys.  Every division needs fringe contenders, though, and that looks like Pryor’s lane for the time being.
18) Jesus Gonzales (9-32)
Last Fight: 7/8/2011- UD12 Francisco Sierra (UNR)
Next Fight: 2/18/2012- vs. #9 Adonis Stevenson
Gonzales will travel to Montreal to fight the very dangerous Adonis Stevenson on February 18.
19) James DeGale (9-18)
Last Fight: 10/15/2011- W(MD12) vs. Piotr Wilczewski (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
A flurry of activity for DeGale.  He’s unhappy with promoter Frank Warren and announced he’s splitting from him.  Warren then pointed out that the two have a contract until 2013.  And amidst the chaos, the EBU has ordered a title defense against aging former contender Cristian Sanavia of Spain.
20) George Groves (9-9)
Last Fight: 11/5/2011- TKO2 Paul Smith (UNR)
Next Fight: 3/16/2012- vs. Kenny Anderson (UNR)
Groves is now officially scheduled to fight minor domestic rival Kenny Anderson in a rematch of his 2010 TKO win at Wembley Arena in London on March 16.

The Week Ahead: Friday in Poland, local fringe contender Piotr Wilczewski takes on Serbian journeyman Geard Ajetovic.

Saturday plays host to a slew of action.  Leading off in Denmark, Northern Irish fringe contender Brian Magee meets Danish gatekeeper Rudy Markussen.  Shifting to North America, #9 Adonis Stevenson looks to keep his string of impressive knockouts rolling as he takes on the capable #18 Jesus Gonzales in Montreal.  Finally, Alfonso Lopez- who recently lost a snoozer to Dyah Davis on ESPN2- should get back in the win column as he faces a guy with both a lack of experience and a losing record named Justin Williams in a 6-rounder on the deep (probably non-televised) Williams-Ishida undercard in Texas.

Dyah Davis won a pretty dominant (if rather boring) 10-round decision over Alfonso Lopez on Friday Night Fights this weekend.  Joe and Teddy were content to focus on the boring part, and so the fact that Davis showed a ton of skill in completely owning a guy that all but beat Kelly Pavlik not too long ago was largely lost.  Davis’s win moved him up the ranks enough to where, a couple months ago, he likely would have claimed a ranking.  Unfortunately for him, the top 20 has heated up enough recently that some of the guys that were ranked a while ago are barely in the top 25 today.  No changes to the rankings.

Dan’s Top 20
Champ: Andre Ward (4-138-138)
Last Fight: 12/17/2011- UD12 #2 Carl Froch
Next Fight: Unknown
A little bit of a disappointing batch of initial rhetoric coming out of the Ward camp.  While Bute says he is willing to travel to Oakland to fight Ward, Ward himself seems more interested in Kessler.  Normally I wouldn’t knock a Champ-#3 contender matchup, but we’ve already got that one figured out.  He’s also said he’s willing to fight J.C. Chavez in Mexico.
1) Lucian Bute (4-300-300)
Last Fight: 11/5/2012- UD12 #13 Glen Johnson
Next Fight: Unknown
After initially saying he’d go to Oakland to fight Ward, and after Ward gave a tepid reaction to the idea, Bute is now apparently in serious discussions to fight a 2-fight series with Froch.  One in Montreal, one in Nottingham.  Reportedly the deal is almost done, with dates being 4/14 and 8/4.
2) Carl Froch (4-291-291)
Last Fight: 12/17/2011- L(UD12) vs. #1 Andre Ward
Next Fight: Unknown
See Bute’s notes, above.
3) Mikkel Kessler (4-370-370)
Last Fight: 6/4/2011- TKO6 Mehdi Bouadla (UNR)
Next Fight: 4/14/2012- vs. #4 Robert Stieglitz
The big fight between Kessler and Stieglitz finally has a date: April 14.
4) Robert Stieglitz (4-124-124)
Last Fight: 4/9/2011- W(DQ10) vs. Khoren Gevor (UNR)
Next Fight: 1/14/2012- vs. Henry Weber (UNR)
Stieglitz will fight a tune-up against middling prospect Henry Weber before the big one with Kessler.
5) Thomas Oosthuizen (4-32-80)
Last Fight: 11/23/2011- TKO11 Francisco Sierra (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Oosthuizen had no problem with trial horse Francisco Sierra, and we hope to see him in with a world-class opponent soon.
6) Arthur Abraham (4-116-116)
Last Fight: 5/14/2011- L(UD12) vs. #1 Andre Ward
Next Fight: 1/14/2012- vs. Pablo Farias (UNR)
Abraham’s January opponent will be Argentine prospect Pablo “Pokemon” Farias.
7) Dimitri Sartison (4-76-80)
Last Fight: 11/12/2011- W(MD8) vs. Arturs Kulikauskis (UNR) (at LHW)
Next Fight: Unknown
Sartison had trouble keeping up with the movement of truly awful journeyman Arturs Kulikauskis in his comeback fight from knee surgery.  Hopefully it gets better with time, because otherwise the once-promising Sartison is fodder.
8) Peter Quillin (4-37-37)
Last Fight: 11/5/2011- TKO6 Craig McEwan (UNR) (at MW)
Next Fight: Unknown
Quillin netted a nice win at Middleweight against Craig McEwan, though it doesn’t affect his ranking here.
9) Adonis Stevenson (4-5-5)
Last Fight: 12/10/2012- TKO9 #12 Aaron Pryor, Jr.
Next Fight: Unknown
Stevenson is an exciting contender to be sure.  His ability to walk through and destroy his opposition is Tyson-like, at least to the naked eye.  His only drawbacks?  He obviously has a vulnerable chin considering his early knockout loss to journeyman Darnell Boone, and he’s getting up there in age (34) for such a fresh face on the scene.
10) Sakio Bika (4-4-249)
Last Fight: 12/3/2011- RTD3 Alfredo Contreras (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Avoided removal by the skin of his teeth, but he’s going to start plummeting any month now if he doesn’t beat someone decent.
11) Andy Lee (4-44)
Last Fight: 10/1/2011- UD10 #14 Bryan Vera
Next Fight: Unknown
Lee was seeking a fight with J.C. Chavez, Jr. that was declined by the Mexican star, and the same fate befell a proposed St. Patrick’s Day slugfest with Martin Murray.
12) Anthony Dirrell (4-6)
Last Fight: 12/2/2011- TKO4 Renan St. Juste (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Finally stepped up to the fringe contender level against St. Juste.  Verdict: not too shabby.
13) Mouhamed Ali Ndiaye (4-9)
Last Fight: 11/11/2011- TKO12 Andrea Di Luisa (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Dominated and stopped a bona fide fringe contender in Di Luisa, and earned a nice ranking in the process.
14) Glen Johnson (4-62)
Last Fight: 11/5/2011- L(UD12) vs. #3 Lucian Bute
Next Fight: Unknown
The Bute fight was the only one of Johnson’s recent career that wasn’t really close.  Bute is certainly a top fighter, but it could be that the Road Warrior is starting to wind down a bit.
15) Bryan Vera (4-49)
Last Fight: 10/1/2011- L(UD10) vs. #15 Andy Lee
Next Fight: Unknown
Totally outclassed by Lee in the rematch of a fight he won last time around.
16) Librado Andrade (4-20)
Last Fight: 8/27/2011- TKO3 Matt O’Brien (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown Date- vs. Don George (UNR)
After Don George backed out of the fight due to an improperly-sized ring, the word is that fight will be rescheduled.
17) Aaron Pryor, Jr. (4-36)
18) Jesus Gonzales (4-27)
Last Fight: 7/8/2011- UD12 Francisco Sierra (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
With a fairly comfortable win over a generally solid and much bigger opponent, Gonzales finds his way easily within the top 20.
19) James DeGale (4-13)
Last Fight: 10/15/2011- W(MD12) vs. Piotr Wilczewski (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
After initially being delayed, DeGale now says he will not fight his scheduled fight with Spanish journeyman Jose Maria Guerrero on 1/27, and is looking for a bigger fight.
20) George Groves (4-4)
Last Fight: 11/5/2011- TKO2 Paul Smith (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Groves is looking likely to fight a rematch with domestic rival Kenny Anderson before May, 2012.

The Week Ahead: Two fights in Offenburg, Germany this week: #4 Robert Stieglitz tunes up for the Kessler fight against somewhat non-threatening undefeated prospect Henry Weber, who, from what I’ve heard, should not be undefeated at all.  #6 Arthur Abraham is also in action against Argentine prospect Pablo “Pokemon” Farias.

Super Middleweight: 2012, Jan 2-8

Andre Dirrell returned to action for the first time since he was fouled hard by Arthur Abraham in March 2010.  He’s a shoe-in, as an active super middleweight, to regain his top-5 ranking, but unfortunately he came in at 169 for the fight and is thus not eligible to re-enter.  For what it’s worth, he stopped journeyman Darryl Cunningham by crunching knockout in the 2nd round.  He looked aggressive, powerful, and sharp after the long layoff.  Very impressive, though against limited opposition.

The Week Ahead: Fringe contenders Dyah Davis and Alfonso Lopez collide in an intriguing Friday Night Fights main event this week.

Super Middleweight: 2011, Sep 26 – Oct 2

Texas prospect Alfonso Lopez stopped journeyman Michael Walker at the beginning of round 7 in Corpus Christi on Saturday, and in a fight that was technically contested just slightly over the 168 limit, Russian prospect Maxim Vlasov made undefeated but green 3-0 prospect Gasan Gasanov quit after one round in Krasnodar, Russia on Sunday.

Here are The Ring’s top 10 for comparison purposes:
1) Andre Ward
2) Carl Froch
3) Lucian Bute
4) Mikkel Kessler
5) Robert Stieglitz
6) Sakio Bika

See Kessler’s notes above.
6) Thomas Oosthuizen (4-16-64)
Last Fight: 9/3/2011- UD12 #9 Aaron Pryor, Jr.
Next Fight: Unknown
Oosthuizen is one of the most accomplished fighters out there that nobody has ever heard of.
7) Arthur Abraham (4-100-100)
Last Fight: 5/14/2011- L(UD12) vs. #1 Andre Ward
Next Fight: 11/5/2011- vs. Unknown Opponent
Abraham is scheduled to return to the ring on November 5, probably in a catchweight fight between 160 and 168, and probably against a tune-up-type opponent.
8) Dimitri Sartison (4-60-64)
Last Fight: 7/31/2010- UD12 Khoren Gevor (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Sartison badly injured his knee in training and will be out until about October.  He will be given adequate time to schedule a fight thereafter without being removed.  I probably won’t even consider removing him until February.
9) Peter Quillin (4-21-21)
Last Fight: 7/23/2011- TKO5 Jason LeHoullier (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Quillin turned down an offer to fight Ishe Smith on the Hopkins-Dawson undercard.  He has bigger ambitions, hoping to fight Sergio Martinez or the winner of Vera-Lee.

Last Fight: 11/27/2010- L(UD12) vs. #2 Andre Ward
Next Fight: Unknown

Last Fight: 9/3/2011- L(UD12) vs. #10 Thomas Oosthuizen
Next Fight: 10/10/2011- vs. Adonis Stevenson (UNR)
Pryor looks to rebound from his momentum-halting loss to Oosthuizen with another tough fight against human highlight reel Adonis Stevenson in October.
12) Glen Johnson (23-46)
Last Fight: 6/4/2011- L(MD12) vs. #2 Carl Froch
Next Fight: 11/5/2011- vs. #3 Lucian Bute
With no apparent buzz leading up to the announcement, Johnson suddenly had a fight signed with Bute for November.
13) Isaac Chilemba (21-64)
Last Fight: 3/26/2011- UD12 Vikapita Meroro (UNR) (at LHW)
Next Fight: Unknown
Chilemba seems to be toying with the idea of moving up to 175.  We’ll have to see if he ultimately takes that route or not.
14) Bryan Vera (16-33)
Last Fight: 6/24/2011- KO8 Eloy Suarez (UNR)
Next Fight: 10/1/2011- vs. #15 Andy Lee
Now officially scheduled for a rematch with #15 Andy Lee on October 1, on the Martinez-Barker undercard.  Not sure yet whether that will be a Middleweight or Super Middleweight fight.
15) Andy Lee (16-28)
Last Fight: 5/18/2011- UD10 Alex Bunema (UNR) (at MW)
Next Fight: 10/1/2011- vs. #14 Bryan Vera
See Vera’s notes, above.
16) Librado Andrade (5-5)

Super Middleweight: 2011, Sep 19-25

Friday in Riga, Latvia, gatekeeper Mehdi Bouadla handled awful awful Dmitri Protkunas in predictable fashion, knocking him down 3 times in just over 2 minutes en route to a 1st-round stoppage.  The following night in Liverpool, British gatekeeper Paul Smith stopped journeyman Paul Samuels in an almost identical amount of time.  Across the pond in Vegas later than night, Mexican undefeated prospect Marco Antonio Periban won a fairly dominant 8-round decision over solid journeyman Dhafir Smith on the same card on which 1-loss Hatian-Canadian prospect Adonis Stevenson stopped fringe prospect Dion Savage in under 2 minutes.

Here are The Ring’s top 10 for comparison purposes:
1) Andre Ward
2) Carl Froch
3) Lucian Bute
4) Mikkel Kessler
5) Robert Stieglitz
6) Sakio Bika
7) Glen Johnson
8) Arthur Abraham
9) Thomas Oosthuizen
10) George Groves

Dan’s Top 20
Champ: None
1) Andre Ward (42-121-121)
Last Fight: 5/14/2011- UD12 #6 Arthur Abraham
Next Fight: 10/29/2011- vs. #2 Carl Froch
We now have a date certain for the Championship fight between Ward and Froch: October 29 at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City.
2) Carl Froch (42-274-274)
Last Fight: 6/4/2011- W(MD12) vs. #12 Glen Johnson
Next Fight: 10/29/2011- vs. #1 Andre Ward
See Ward’s comments above.
3) Lucian Bute (42-283-283)
Last Fight: 7/9/2011- KO4 Jean Paul Mendy (UNR)
Next Fight: 11/5/2011- vs. #12 Glen Johnson
Bute passed up Mikkel Kessler for a potentially slightly easier night with #12 Glen Johnson in early November.
4) Mikkel Kessler (42-353-353)
Last Fight: 6/4/2011- TKO6 Mehdi Bouadla (UNR)
Next Fight: 11/5/2011- vs. #5 Robert Stieglitz
The Stieglitz bout is now official, and will be in Copenhagen.
5) Robert Stieglitz (23-107-107)
Last Fight: 4/9/2011- W(DQ10) vs. Khoren Gevor (UNR)
Next Fight: 11/5/2011- vs. #4 Mikkel Kessler
See Kessler’s notes above.
6) Thomas Oosthuizen (3-15-63)
Last Fight: 9/3/2011- UD12 #9 Aaron Pryor, Jr.
Next Fight: Unknown
Oosthuizen is one of the most accomplished fighters out there that nobody has ever heard of.
7) Arthur Abraham (3-99-99)
Last Fight: 5/14/2011- L(UD12) vs. #1 Andre Ward
Next Fight: 11/5/2011- vs. Unknown Opponent
Abraham is scheduled to return to the ring on November 5, probably in a catchweight fight between 160 and 168, and probably against a tune-up-type opponent.
8) Dimitri Sartison (3-59-63)
Last Fight: 7/31/2010- UD12 Khoren Gevor (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Sartison badly injured his knee in training and will be out until about October.  He will be given adequate time to schedule a fight thereafter without being removed.  I probably won’t even consider removing him until February.
9) Peter Quillin (3-20-20)
Last Fight: 7/23/2011- TKO5 Jason LeHoullier (UNR)

12) Glen Johnson (22-45)
Last Fight: 6/4/2011- L(MD12) vs. #2 Carl Froch
Next Fight: 11/5/2011- vs. #3 Lucian Bute
With no apparent buzz leading up to the announcement, Johnson suddenly had a fight signed with Bute for November.
13) Isaac Chilemba (20-63)
Last Fight: 3/26/2011- UD12 Vikapita Meroro (UNR) (at LHW)
Next Fight: Unknown
Chilemba seems to be toying with the idea of moving up to 175.  We’ll have to see if he ultimately takes that route or not.
14) Bryan Vera (15-32)
Last Fight: 6/24/2011- KO8 Eloy Suarez (UNR)
Next Fight: 10/1/2011- vs. #15 Andy Lee
Now officially scheduled for a rematch with #15 Andy Lee on October 1, on the Martinez-Barker undercard.  Not sure yet whether that will be a Middleweight or Super Middleweight fight.
15) Andy Lee (15-27)
Last Fight: 5/18/2011- UD10 Alex Bunema (UNR) (at MW)
Next Fight: 10/1/2011- vs. #14 Bryan Vera
See Vera’s notes, above.
16) Librado Andrade (4-4)
Last Fight: 8/27/2011- TKO3 Matt O’Brien (UNR)

Still appears to be well on the downside of his career, but with his past success he only needs to stay active and win to stay in the rankings at this point.
17) Jesus Gonzalez (4-10)
Last Fight: 7/8/2011- UD12 Francisco Sierra (UNR)

Last Fight: 5/21/2011- W(MD12*) vs. #20 James DeGale
Next Fight: Unknown
Groves may be looking at a fight with James DeGale victim Paul Smith on December 17 in Liverpool.

The Week Ahead:  Saturday night in Corpus Christi, Texas, prospect Alfonso Lopez (who gave Kelly Pavlik all he could handle this spring) squares off with journeyman Michael Walker.  The following evening in Krasnodar, Russia, one-loss Russian prospect Maxim Vlasov faces novice 3-0 prospect Gasan Gasanov
