Junior Middleweight: 2013, Oct 14-20

Brazilian gatekeeper Anderson Clayton won a 7-round technical decision over Argentine fringe prospect Dario Pucheta.  I don’t know the exact circumstances, but something strange must have happened, as one judge apparently left ringside and refused to score the 7th round.

No changes this week.

Last Fight: 7/16/2013- TKO3 Gari Abajian (UNR)

11) Delvin Rodriguez (24-118)
Last Fight: 10/5/2013- L (TKO3) vs. #7 Miguel Cotto
Next Fight: Unknown
Rodriguez appears to be solid against borderline top-10 types (see Wolak), but completely out of his depth at just a tad higher level.
12) Vanes Martirosyan (2-124)
Last Fight: 6/15/2013- TKO2 Ryan Davis (UNR) (at MW)

Martirosyan-Andrade has been moved up a week to November 9.
13) Willie Nelson (2-33)
Last Fight: 6/29/2013- UD10 Luciano Cuello (UNR)
Next Fight: 12/7/2013- vs. #6 MW Matthew Macklin (at MW)

Last Fight: 6/8/2013- UD12 Demetrius Hopkins (UNR)
Next Fight: 10/14/2013- vs. Jose Angel Rodriguez (UNR)

17) Guido Pitto (2-25)
Last Fight: 4/27/2013- W* (SD12) vs. Jack Culcay (UNR)
Next Fight: 10/26/2013- vs. Jack Culcay (UNR)

Next Fight: 10/26/2013- vs. Vyacheslav Senchenko (UNR) (at WW)
Brook gets Senchenko in late October in Sheffield.  Since it’s a non-title fight, there’s always the chance it could creep up over 147 and thus affect his ranking here.
19) Jermall Charlo (2-2)
Last Fight: 9/12/2013- TKO7 Rogelio De la Torre (UNR) (as MW)
Next Fight: Unknown
20)  Jack Culcay (2-2)

Next Fight: 10/26/2013- vs. #17 Guido Pitto
See Pitto’s notes, above.

The Week Ahead:  We’ve got a busy week on our hands.  Monday in Sunrise, Florida, #15 Jermell Charlo fights journeyman Jose Rodriguez in a Fox Sports 1-televised main event.  It should be little more than a stay-busy fight.

Friday in Benidorm, Spain, Spanish middleweight gatekeeper Roberto Santos will apparently move down to 154 to fight a terrible opponent in countryman Julio Sanchez.

The following night in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, gatekeeper Joachim Alcine and prospect Omar Chavez collide in a good test for both men.

Earlier that same night in Poland, gatekeeper Rafal Jackiewicz takes on undefeated but very untested prospect Michal Zerominski in an 8-rounder.

#7 Miguel Cotto demolished #11 Delvin Rodriguez in Orlando on Saturday.  In doing so, he looked like the aggressive destroyer of days gone by, and silenced at least some of the critics that have been suggesting he’s on his way to mediocrity to varying degrees essentially since the Margarito loss.  He needed just over 2 rounds to get rid of Rodriguez, who was totally overwhelmed.  Cotto’s devastating body shots re-emerged after roughly a half-decade in mothballs.  Very impressive outing.

Larry Ekundayo was supposed to be fighting earlier that night in London, but the fight fell through.

Friday in Ghent, Belgium, local one-loss prospect Sasha Yengoyan got the best win of his career so far, stopping French gatekeeper Frank Haroche Horta in four.  I can’t find a video of the fight anywhere, so I can’t report anything more specific than the result.

Cotto-Rodriguez, perhaps surprisingly, does not produce a shake-up, as the result basically stands in equilibrium with the status quo (too much Latin for one sentence?), and thus both men retain their prior ranking.  Two chanes do occur this week, however, as last week’s #12 Lukas Konecny is removed, since he has moved up to 160 and hasn’t fought at this weight in a year, and #13 Keith Thurman is removed for scheduling a fight at welterweight for after the one year anniversary of his last fight at 154.  This allows the older Charlo twin, Jermall, to debut at #19 on the strength of his August stoppage of Antwone Smith, while Jack Culcay debuts at #20.  Last week’s #14 Vanes Martirosyan moves up two spots to #12.  This major shake-up gives me occasion to re-examine the resume of Yuri Foreman (#15 last week), and since his second-best win is well over 5 years old at this point and his resume in general is decaying, he actually loses ground and slides back to #16.  This allows #16 Willie Nelson to catapult all the way to #13.  Brian Rose and the younger Charlo brother also see the benefit of all these moves, settling in at #14 and 15 respectively.  Pitto and Brook each move up two spots to #17 and 18, as well.

Last Fight: 6/8/2013- TKO10 #8 Alfredo Angulo

Last Fight: 9/14/2013- L (SD12) vs. #1 Carlos Molina

The Week Ahead:  Saturday in Guarulhos, near Sao Paolo, Brazil, local gatekeeper Anderson Clayton looks to follow up on his April victory over serious prospect Sebastien Madani by taking on unproven one-loss Argentine fringe prospect Dario Pucheta.
