Friday in Gatineau, Quebec, 2-loss prospect and Montreal native Antonin Decarie scored a unanimous decision over gatekeeper Pablo Munguia.  This was the headliner of a pay-per-view card.  I made a calculated decision not to buy it on the basis of it being of a quality similar to the average Friday Night Fights card, and assuming I could probably see it online.  But apparently I was not the only person that stayed away.  There’s no video available anywhere, it seems.  Even though one judge had it for Decarie by just a one-round margin in the winner’s hometown (the other two having it 97-93 and 98-92), I have to unfortunately take it at face value.  It’s also extremely worth noting that the fight technically was a light middleweight contest.  Decarie came in at over 149, and Munguia at 147.25.  It doesn’t count here, especially since Decarie has lost both of his top-50-level fights at the 147 limit, and it’s not enough to get the Canadien a ranking at 154.

In what turned out to be a surprisingly intriguing contest Saturday in Newcastle, England, undefeated English prospect Frankie Gavin lost 4 of the first 5 rounds on my card, and was knocked down in the 2nd by unheralded Namibian journeyman Sacky Shikukutu.  But he went on to carry each of the last 7 rounds with a dazzling display of pure boxing to take it 115-112 as I saw it.  I could see a judge having it anything between 117-110 and 114-113 for Gavin.  Marcus McDonnell was in range at 117-111, but the normal British bias was in full effect with Phil Edwards and the habitually awful Dave Parris, each of whom saw it 118-109, meaning they gave Shikukutu not one round besides the knockdown frame.  That’s a shame.  It was a good fight overall.  Shikukutu had lost a split decision for the Namibian title to 11-3 journeyman Tommy Hango back in 2012 and was stopped in one by a losing fighter in 2009, along with a draw in a 4-rounder against another losing fighter.  This close fight with a supposedly world-class Gavin has got to leave you questioning the Englishman’s future a little.

No changes.

Friday

Welterweight: 2014, Mar 24-30

Undefeated fast-rising Aussie prospect Jeff Horn got a fairly stern test Wednesday from mid-level Cameroonian journeyman Rivan Cesaire in the city of Broadbeach.  Their first fight had ended in the equivalent of a no contest due to a head butt.  This one ended oddly, too.  I had Horn up by 3 points with 4 rounds yet to go when, in the 9th, a blocked punch from Horn apparently dislocated Cesaire’s shoulder.  Cesaire went down in agony, and the referee reached the 10 count to give Horn a quirky knockout win.  If you grant that Horn met expectations, you’d have to conclude that Cesaire exceeded his by winning 2 or 3 rounds.

Friday in Thailand, Teerachai Kratingdaenggym (aka Tewa Kiram) stopped low-level Uzbek journeyman Behzod Nabiev in the 7th, in a fight I didn’t manage to see.

In a moderate upset Saturday in Monterrey, Mexico, gatekeeper Jorge Paez, Jr. was thoroughly outboxed by former contender Vivian Harris, who hasn’t really been relevant on any level since 2010.  Harris lost at most 1 round between 3 and 10, as Paez looked tired from round 3 or 4 and gassed completely starting in maybe round 7.  The judges turned in bogus cards that were unanimously 96-94, with one even lending that score to Paez.  97-93 or 98-92 was the correct score, no doubt.  I thought I heard Jimmy Lennon say the worst of the judges was named Fernando Vargas, but I probably heard that wrong.

Harris’ win is by far the best he’s had since 2007, but there’s no consideration to be given it at this time, since the fight was actually contested 3/4 of a pound over the divisional limit, and since Harris doesn’t have any companion wins of consequence in a relevant time frame.  I’ll certainly factor this fight in if he does add a win at 147 in the future.  No changes.

The Week Ahead:
Friday
Antonin Decarie vs. Pablo Munguia; Gatineau, Quebec; PPV (US)
Decarie is a two-loss Quebec prospect who is thought to still have potential.  Munguia is a Mexico City gatekeeper who has done some business at just below the top-50 level.  Decarie represents the most advanced opponent of the Mexican’s career, though, and that doesn’t bode well for a guy that already has 4 losses, including 3 stoppages.

Saturday
Frankie Gavin vs. Sacky Shikukutu; Newcastle, England; Boxnation (UK)
The 18-0 Gavin is a fairly proven prospect with a ton of potential.  His opponent is a Namibian journeyman with 2 losses and a draw at a low level of competition.  Should be a cakewalk for the Brit.

Welterweight: 2013, Sep 30- Oct 6

Posted in Rankings, Welterweight with tags , , , , , , , on October 16, 2013 by danboxing
On the Stevenson-Cloud undercard in Montreal, local undefeated prospect Kevin Bizier easily handled Italian veteran Giuseppe Lauri in a 6-rounder.  Bizier won every round on every card, and apparently scored a knockdown along the way, though the fight was contested at a contract weight about halfway to 154.

In another fight that bled over into junior middle, two-loss prospect Antonin Decarie also walked away with a 6-round decision, but in rather close fashion over mid-range journeyman Salim Larbi.

#16 Selcuk Aydin picked up a stoppage win when his aging opponent, Demarcus Corley, couldn’t continue with what appeared to be a fairly ambiguous injury after 4 in Istanbul on Friday.  But that fight was at 140, so again, no affect there.

No changes.

Next Fight: 10/26/2013- vs. Vyacheslav Senchenko (UNR)
Brook fights Senchenko in late October.  He’d better make 147 for the non-title fight if he wants to maintain his ranking here.
9) Randall Bailey (19-68-68)
Last Fight: 10/20/2012- L (UD12) vs. #? Devon Alexander

19) Pablo Cesar Cano (2-2)
Last Fight: 9/14/2013- W (SD10*) vs. Ashley Theophane (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Cano said after the 143-pound catchweight win against Theophane that he intends to seek title contention at 140 now.  I must say I’m surprised by the move, considering he failed to make weight for one of his biggest fights at 147 against Malignaggi.

The Week Ahead: #16 Selcuk Aydin will be in action Friday against Demarcus Corley, but at 140.

Two fights to mention from the Stevenson-Cloud undercard on Saturday in Montreal:

Fringe contending undefeated prospect Kevin Bizier meets veteran Italian journeyman Giuseppe Lauri in what for some reason is only a 6-rounder.

Also, 2-loss prospect Antonin Decarie meets French journeyman Salim Larbi.
