Junior Middleweight: 2012, Feb 20-26

In last week’s biggest fight, #13 Paul Williams won a dominant 12 round decision over #17 Middleweight and inactive fringe contender at this weight, Nobuhiro Ishida, in Corpus Christi, Texas.  Both guys are exceptionally tall and rangy, but Williams was vastly better at shortening up and fighting in close.  He capitalized on this advantage by smothering Ishida’s attack while still landing his own shots.  Ishida fought hard, but couldn’t string together enough moments to win any rounds.

In other Saturday action, undefeated Polish prospect Damian Jonak stopped mediocre journeyman Sebastian Skrzypczynki in Raciborz, Poland.

Friday night in Santa Ynez, California, gatekeeper Billy Lyell put up a game effort and w0n nearly his share of rounds, but was edged out by the superior size and fundamental technique of undefeated prospect Jonathan Gonzalez.  Gonzalez won’t benefit from this at 154, though, since he came in at the contract weight of 156 compared to Lyell’s 154.

Williams went a long way toward atoning for his loss to Lara with this performance, rising all the way to #7.  I had to spend about 20 minutes just staring at the records of William and last week’s #7 Alfredo Angulo to try and determine who would claim that spot.  Williams has by far the single best win, over #2 Verno Phillips back in November ’08.  But his quality wins were interrupted by the relatively recent drubbing he took from Erislandy Lara- ranked only #17 at the time.  Angulo lost to a very down-and-out version of James Kirkland who was effectively coming off a devastating upset loss to Ishida, and also was outboxed by Kermit Cintron.  Williams technically owns a win over Cintron, but it was the result of just over 3 rounds that Cintron arguably won anyway, and which I view as a no contest due to a Cintron injury.  And Angulo has a much larger body of quality work at this weight than does Williams.  What tipped the scales for me was a comparison of each man’s last fight.  Angulo was stopped by the guy that was wiped out by Ishida, albeit an inspired version.  Williams dominated the guy that wiped out the guy that Angulo lost to.  So Williams passes Angulo, but can’t overcome Carlos Molina at #6 due in part to Molina having performed better against Lara than did Williams.  Ishida fails to gain consideration for a re-ranking, as he came in a pound over the divisional limit and thus still hasn’t fought at 154 since 2010.  Everyone ranked #7-12 last week drops a spot, including Cory Spinks, who exits the top 10 after just 3 weeks in.

#18 Demetrius Andrade crushed mid-range journeyman Angel Hernandez at the Mohegan Sun on Friday.  He wasn’t merely jab heavy and dominant the way he was against Brewer.  He came out and crushed Hernandez in just 2 rounds, knocking him down twice in what turned out to be the final round.  This wasn’t a top 50 opponent, so you don’t want to read into it too much, but he could not have looked sharper or more talented than he did.  No changes.

Ludwigsburg, Baden was host to a very close fight between local undefeated prospect Dominik Britsch and #15 Billy Lyell.  The rounds almost uniformly alternated between the two fighters, and I personally had the fight all square at 114-114 when all was said and done.  Britsch took a majority decision- fairly credible with the exception of Arno Pokrandt’s 117-111 card, which was at least a round beyond reason.  As is always the case when I disagree with the ultimate winner but consider his win a reasonable result, I give minimal deference to that result, treating the fight essentially as a draw, with a minimal edge to the official winner.

#12 Max Bursak, meanwhile, came in plenty heavy and used that extra weight (and his superior skill) to thoroughly demolish Uzbek journeyman Abdulaziz Matazimov in the Ukraine, knocking the smaller opponent down 4 times en route to a 3rd round TKO.

These draws or draw-type fights like Britsch-Lyell are always tough to deal with in ranking the fighters involved- particularly when one of the parties is an unknown quantity as was Britsch.  In this case, to make a long story short, I’ve decided that it’s best to split the difference between the level Lyell had established himself at (#15) and the gatekeeper region of the top 50 that Britsch had proven himself ready for by the journeymen he had beaten.  The result is that both men end up just outside the top 20 when the dust settles.  Everyone ranked #16 and below last week receives a modest promotion, and undefeated Argentine prospect Billi Godoy re-joins the party for the first time since he was forced out by Demetrius Andrade in late August.

Macklin and Lee both called Sergio out immediately after his less than dominant victory over Barker, as has Pirog- whose offer to fight Sergio in Moscow is reportedly some kind of record.  Sergio expressed interest in the winner of Cotto-Margarito, and also shot down any suggestion of him moving up to 168.  He still wants Chavez, who claims he’d be interested for the right money.  Pacquiao has also been mentioned, but the Filipino superstar would only be interested if Sergio could make 147.

15) Billy Lyell (1-38)
Last Fight: 7/1/2011- UD6 vs. Michael Walker (UNR)
Next Fight: 10/22/2012- vs. Dominik Britsch (UNR)
Lyell will fight German prospect Dominik Britsch in Ludwigsburg on October 22.
16) Nobuhiro Ishida (1-28)
Last Fight: 4/9/2011- TKO1 James Kirkland (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Ishida was looking to fight JC Chavez in September, but Chavez opted for a likely easier fight with the less-accomplished Ronald Hearns.  Ishida seems to be on everyone’s short list, but always loses out on the big fight since beating Kirkland.
17) Gennady Golovkin (1-18)
Last Fight: 6/17/2011- KO10 Kassim Ouma (UNR)
Next Fight: 12/9/2011- vs. Lajuan Simon (UNR)
Golovkin is now set to fight journeyman Lajuan Simon in December.
18) Avtandil Khurtsidze (1-38)
Last Fight: 10/3/2012- TKO2 Jason LeHoullier (at SMW)
Next Fight: Unknown
Steady as she goes in his stay busy fight with oft-recycled journeyman Jason LeHoullier.
19) Demetrius Andrade (1-9)
Last Fight: 9/21/2011- RTD3 Saul Duran (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
20) Darren Barker (1-1)
Last Fight: 10/1/2011- L(KO11) vs. Champ Sergio Martinez
Next Fight: Unknown
Barker has been receiving interest from Chavez and Geale after his over-performance against Martinez.

The Week Ahead: To fights to mention on Saturday:
#15 Billy Lyell takes on undefeated German prospect Dominik Britsch in Ludwigsburg, Baden.
Meanwhile, in the Ukraine, #12 Max Bursak of that country takes on Uzbek journeyman Abdulaziz Matazimov.

Middleweight: 2011, Jul 4-10

Billy Lyell won all six rounds on all three cards against journeyman Michael Walker in Youngstown, Ohio on Friday.  Walker was a one-loss prospect when he actually looked pretty decent in a loss to then-undefeated prospect Danny Jacobs on the Pacquiao-Hatton undercard in 2009, but since that loss he has noticeably regressed to the point that he has now lost his last eight fights.  Lyell wants to move down to 154, but reportedly cannot get anyone in the ring at that weight.

For Comparision, here are the current Ring ratings for the division:
Champ: Sergio Martinez
1) Felix Sturm
2) Daniel Geale
3) Paul Williams
4) Matthew Macklin
5) Sebastian Sylvester
6) Julio Cesar Chavez, Jr.
7) Sebastian Zbik
8) Dmitry Pirog
9) Hassan N’Dam N’Jikam
10) Marco Antonio Rubio

Dan’s Top 20 (Weeks in Current Position-Weeks in Top 10 if applicable-Weeks in Top 20)
Champ: Sergio Martinez (64-64-64)
Last Fight: 3/12/2011- TKO9 JMW #9 Sergiy Dzinziruk
Next Fight: 10/1/2011- vs. #19 Darren Barker
Martinez has reached an agreement to fight Darren Barker.  There’s nothing wrong with Barker, who has gotten through multiple gatekeepers and remains undefeated, but it’s still got to be considered a disappointing matchup for the Middleweight Champ, as Barker isn’t even really that close to being a top 10 fighter.  There are literally probably a dozen or more better choices that would be willing to take the fight.
1) Daniel Geale (2-107-107)
Last Fight: 5/7/2011- W(SD12) vs. #3 Sebastian Sylvester
Next Fight: 8/31/2011- vs. Eromosele Albert (UNR)
Geale will follow up his huge win over Sylvester by fighting Nigerian gatekeeper Eromosele Albert at the end of August.
2) Felix Sturm (2-407-407)
Last Fight: 6/25/2011- W*(SD12) vs. #11 Matthew Macklin
Next Fight: Unknown
Got a gift against Macklin.  I’ll give him credit for a dubious draw, but that’s about the best you could possibly say.
3) Matthew Macklin (2-2-93)
Last Fight: 6/25/2011- L*(SD12) vs. #1 Felix Sturm
Next Fight: Unknown
Almost certainly deserved the nod against Sturm.
4) Paul Williams (2-117-117)
Last Fight: 11/20/2010- L(KO2) vs. Champ Sergio Martinez
Next Fight: 7/9/2011- vs. JMW #15 Erislandy Lara (at JMW)
HBO nixed his scheduled fight with Ishida after initially giving its blessing, and Williams is now fighting somewhat diminished prospect Erislandy Lara in a very interesting potential crossroads fight.
5) Sebastian Sylvester (2-308-308)
Last Fight: 5/7/2011- L(SD12) vs. #4 Daniel Geale
Next Fight: Unknown
Despite what a corrupt Danish judge might say, Sylvester lost in fairly close but clear fashion to Geale.  Still, there’s not a ton of shame in that, and Sylvester remains soundly within the top 5.
6) Hassan N’Dam N’Jikam (2-36-36)
Last Fight: 4/2/2011- UD12 Giovanni Lorenzo (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Controversy aside, he probably deserved the win over Lorenzo and remains a force in the division.
7) Dmitry Pirog (2-49-49)
Last Fight: 3/26/2011- UD12 Javier Maciel (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Pirog is apparently deep in discussions with mandatory challenger Gennady Martirosyan.  He hopes that fight would land on ESPN, though there are also talks of it landing in an obscure city in Russia.
8) Julio Cesar Chavez, Jr. (2-5-23)
Last Fight: 6/4/2011- W(MD12) vs. #19 Sebastian Zbik
Next Fight: 9/24/2011- vs. Unknown Opponent
The plan appears for Chavez to fight on September 24 on Fox Sports Net’s Top Rank Live, then again in November.  No opponent announced for either, though Peter Manfredo remains a persistent rumor for one or the other.
9) Marco Antonio Rubio (2-13-23)
Last Fight: 6/4/2011- TKO3 Ricardo Ramallo (UNR) (at LHW)
Next Fight: Unknown
Rubio is the mandatory for Chavez, and has recently courteously but very directly challenged Chavez to take that fight.
10) Grzegorz Proksa (2-12-12)
Last Fight: 6/23/2011- TKO2 Peter Vecsei (UNR) (at SMW)
Next Fight: Unknown
Looks to be not ready for prime time when he settles for a 2-1 opponent as he did in June.
11) Anthony Mundine (2-23)
Last Fight: 6/5/2011- TKO7 Xavier Tolliver (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Staying busy, but guys like Tolliver are mostly a waste of time.  Says he wants to move down to 154.
12) Maxim Bursak (5-23)
Last Fight: 5/28/2011- vs. Carlos Jerez (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Absolutely dominated Jerez.
13) Osumanu Adama (5-15)
Last Fight: 3/25/2011- TKO4 #19 Marcus Upshaw
Next Fight: Unknown
Displaced by Marco Rubio and company after a 2 week cup of coffee in the top 10.
14) Garth Wood (5-23)
Last Fight: 4/13/2011- L (UD10) vs. #20 Anthony Mundine
Next Fight: Unknown
Got dropped twice against Mundine en route to a loss in which he appears to have faded a bit late.  Has a knockout win to his credit over the same opponent, so a trilogy appears appropriate.
15) Billy Lyell (12-23)
Last Fight: 7/1/2011- UD6 vs. Michael Walker (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Lyell is curiously underrated, it seems to me.  When a guy like him is relegated to fighting 6-rounders, something’s wrong.
16) Nobuhiro Ishida (12-13)
Last Fight: 4/9/2011- TKO1 James Kirkland (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
There is some talk of a potential Manfredo-Ishida fight, which would figure to be a fairly even fight.
17) Gennady Golovkin (3-3)
Last Fight: 6/17/2011- KO10 Kassim Ouma (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Hot prospect Golovkin has finally arrived with a good win over Ouma.
18) Avtandil Khurtsidze (3-23)
Last Fight: 6/11/2011- KO1 Dionisio Miranda (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Disposed of Miranda (who nearly beat Roman Karmazin not long ago) in surprisingly short order, moving him past future Martinez challenger Barker for now.
19) Darren Barker (3-23)
Last Fight: 4/30/2011- UD12 Domenico Spada (UNR)
Next Fight: 10/1/2011- vs. Champ Sergio Martinez
A couple weeks after announcing a defense of his European title on July 23, Barker has instead signed for a Middleweight Championship shot with Sergio Martinez.
20) Billi Godoy (3-8)
Last Fight: 5/14/2011- W(TD9) vs. Claudio Abalos (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Escaped from the riot in his last fight with a wildly controversial but ultimately correct technical decision and finds himself in the top 20 as a result.  This may be one of those fights that demands a rematch, though.

The Week Ahead: Russian prospect Matt Korobov takes on journeyman Lester Gonzalez on the non-televised undercard for Rios-Antillon/Cintron-Molina in Carson, California on Saturday.  Korobov was considered one of the top prospects in the sport in about 2009, but has been less exciting and less impressive since stepping up to 8-rounders last spring.  Nevertheless, he remains undefeated and could have a bright future.
