Top-50 Argentine veteran Claudio Abalos stopped 6-6 journeyman Juan Munoz in 2 rounds in Trelew, Argentina in a fight that was a bit ridiculously billed as being for the South American title.

Last Fight: 12/2/2012- Draw (SD12) vs. Martin Murray (UNR)
Next Fight: 4/13/2012- vs. Sebastian Zbik (UNR)

Next Fight: Unknown
Both sides now agree that Golovkin-N’Dam is a no-go.  Golovkin is the current mandatory for Sturm, but Sturm has opted to fight Zbik instead.  Golovkin is a feared puncher, and it’s understandable that nobody’s in a hurry to fight him.
17) Nobuhiro Ishida (9-45)

Paul Williams, who appears to have settled in as a junior middleweight for the time being, will fight #17 Nobuhiro Ishida at 154.

And in a fight that could definitely affect the rankings, #15 Garth Wood fights resurgent veteran and fellow Australian Sam Soliman in Homebush, Australia.

#7 Julio Cesar Chavez came in as a beast on Saturday, delivering probably his most impressive performance to date.  He was simply a monster compared to the much smaller Rubio, who seemed unwilling to fully commit to his punches, uncharacteristically becoming (by necessity) the boxer to Chavez’s puncher.  It didn’t work.  Rubio started getting into the fight progressively as the fight went on, but not enough.  Chavez bulled his way to a reasonably comfortable decision.  Scores- all of which were reasonable- ranged from 115-113 to 118-110 for Chavez, with 116-112 being the median.

Chavez moves up the rankings past Sturm.  Sturm’s resume is littered with better wins than anything on Chavez’s, but in his last two fights he’s deserved a draw (at best) with then-11th-ranked Matthew Macklin, and then ended up with an actual draw with unranked prospect Martin Murray.  Rubio is ranked higher than Macklin and obviously much higher than Murray, and Chavez obviously did much better against him than Sturm has done lately with his lesser competition.  So Chavez ends up at #4, displacing everyone rated 4 -6 last week one spot apiece.  Rubio slumps to #12, exiting the top 10 after 43 consecutive weeks in, and allowing Anthony Mundine to sneak back in after he was forced out by Murray’s debut 10 weeks ago.

The Week Ahead: Argentine veteran Claudio Abalos looks to get back in the win column after consecutive technical decision losses to countryman Billi Godoy when he fights countryman Juan Munoz for what is incredibly being called the South American title.  I’ve already told you that by far the better half of the matchup has lost twice in a row to another Argentine…and it’s not as if Godoy is fighting intercontinental opposition at this point.

In what very well may have been the final fight of Roman Karmazin’s quality career, the Russian took a beating for nine-plus rounds against #12 Osumanu Adama on Friday, prompting his corner to mercifully throw in the towel a minute into round 9.

The next night in Neuquen, Argentina, Billi Godoy- in seeking to clear up any residual controversy from a riot-inducing technical decision win from the spring- really just treaded water, as the result of this fight- though evidently less controversial- was an even shorter technical decision over just 4 rounds.

Adama surprisingly moves up just one place to #11 due to #10 Anthony Mundine’s impressive resume.  Karmazin, even with the brutal loss, gains a #14 rating due to his return to activity and his past accomplishments.  Max Bursak slips to #12 as a result of Adama’s advancement, and everybody rated #14 or below last week is forced down one.  Darren Barker is forced out after being an inaugural member of my rankings 37 weeks ago.

Dan’s Top 20 (Weeks in Current Position-Weeks in Top 10 if applicable-Weeks in Top 20)
Champ: Sergio Martinez (78-78-78)
Last Fight: 10/1/2011- KO11 #20 Darren Barker
Next Fight: Unknown
Macklin and Lee both called Sergio out immediately after his less than dominant victory over Barker, as has Pirog- whose offer to fight Sergio in Moscow is reportedly some kind of record.  Sergio expressed interest in the winner of Cotto-Margarito, and also shot down any suggestion of him moving up to 168.  I assume he would still like to fight Chavez, as well.
1) Daniel Geale (16-121-121)
Last Fight: 8/31/2011- UD12 Eromosele Albert (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Geale may be fighting Pirog in early 2012 on HBO, but has also expressed interest in fighting Darren Barker.

Last Fight: 6/25/2011- W*(SD12) vs. #11 Matthew Macklin
Next Fight: 12/2/2012- vs. Martin Murray (UNR)
Apparently ducking a rematch with British contender Matthew Macklin, Sturm will instead fight his countryman, undefeated prospect Martin Murray, in Mannheim.
4) Matthew Macklin (2-16-107)
Last Fight: 6/25/2011- L*(SD12) vs. #1 Felix Sturm
Next Fight: Unknown
Macklin couldn’t secure a rematch of his borderline robbery loss to Sturm, as the German has opted to fight countryman Martin Murray, instead.
5) Hassan N’Dam N’Jikam (14-50-50)
Last Fight: 4/2/2011- UD12 Giovanni Lorenzo (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
A fight rumored to be in the works with Gennady Golovkin has reportedly been scuttled by N’Dam’s unwillingness to fight the Kazakh.
6) Dmitry Pirog (14-63-63)
Last Fight: 9/25/2011- RTD10 Gennady Martirosyan (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Pirog has made what his team describes as a record offer for Sergio to travel to Moscow for a fight.
7) Sebastian Sylvester (2-322-322)
Last Fight: 10/1/2011- L(RTD3) vs. #9 Grzegorz Proksa
Next Fight: Unknown
Sylvester may be getting long in the tooth after being destroyed by Proksa.
8) Julio Cesar Chavez, Jr. (2-19-37)

Next Fight: 11/19/2011- vs. Peter Manfredo, Jr. (UNR)

Last Fight: 6/5/2011- TKO7 Xavier Tolliver (UNR)
Next Fight: 10/19/2011- vs. Rigoberto Alvarez (UNR)
Mundine bailed on an anticipated fight with Austin Trout and will now fight smaller gatekeeper Rigoberto Alvarez, older brother of JMW #1 Saul Alvarez.  He’s stated he wants the Trout fight after that, and then Cotto.
11) Osumanu Adama (1-29)
Last Fight: 10/6/2011- TKO9 Roman Karmazin (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Adama has now quietly put together a really respectable resume after battering Karmazin.
12) Maxim Bursak (1-37)
Last Fight: 5/28/2011- vs. Carlos Jerez (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Absolutely dominated Jerez.
13) Paul Williams (14-131)
Last Fight: 7/9/2011- W*(MD12) vs. JMW #15 Erislandy Lara (at JMW)
Next Fight: Unknown
Lara handled him easily despite what the awful judges said, and his poor performance earns him a demotion even though the fight took place at JMW.
14) Roman Karmazin (1-1)
Last Fight: 10/7/2011- L(TKO9) vs. #12 Osumanu Adama
Next Fight: Unknown
Karmazin very well might choose to retire after his failed comeback fight and being badly beaten therein.  But until then, he belongs in the rankings anyway.
15) Garth Wood (1-37)
Last Fight: 4/13/2011- L (UD10) vs. #20 Anthony Mundine
Next Fight: Unknown
Wood appeared set to fight journyeman Johannes Mwetupunga on the Geale-Albert undercard, but pulled out of that fight.

Last Fight: 7/1/2011- UD6 vs. Michael Walker (UNR)
Next Fight: 10/22/2012- vs. Dominik Britsch (UNR)

17) Nobuhiro Ishida (1-27)
Last Fight: 4/9/2011- TKO1 James Kirkland (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Ishida was looking to fight JC Chavez in September, but Chavez opted for a likely easier fight with the less-accomplished Ronald Hearns.  Ishida seems to be on everyone’s short list, but always loses out on the big fight since beating Kirkland.
18) Gennady Golovkin (1-17)
Last Fight: 6/17/2011- KO10 Kassim Ouma (UNR)
Next Fight: 10/15/2011- vs. Lajuan Simon (UNR)

The Week Ahead: Nothing to report this week.

Middleweight: 2011, Oct 3-9

Posted in Middleweight, Rankings with tags , , , , , , , on June 18, 2012 by danboxing
Champion Sergio Martinez defended his title with a workmanlike effort against #20 Darren Barker.  Martinez was certainly not sharp.  He didn’t give the angles we’re used to seeing from him.  I had him up by 4 points after 10 rounds, but virtually all of the rounds had been close.  He was, however, steadily wearing Barker down when a mostly-blocked punch to the ear surprisingly robbed Barker of his equilibrium and led to a knockout win for Maravilla.

A few hours earlier in Germany, #9 Grzegorz Proksa put on a show against #4 Sebastian Sylvester in Germany.  Proksa was unorthodox, clever, fast, and powerful.  His defense was awkward and effective, and he was giving the German contender a comprehensive beating before the fight was stopped on cuts following round 3.

On the Martinez-Barker undercard, Bryan Vera and Andy Lee rematched, but that fight- advertised as a middleweight fight- was actually contested well into the Super Middleweight division and has been fully treated there.

Martinez and Barker both stay put in the rankings.  Proksa moves up to claim the #2 spot.  It was a somewhat close call between him and Sturm, but ultimately Sturm’s performance- which was clearly worthy of either a loss or a draw- against Macklin (who was rated #11 at the time) allows Proksa to get the nod, even though Sturm’s resume is filled with top 5 and top 10 victims from a couple years back or so.  Sylvester, coming off his second consecutive loss, falls to #7.  Sturm and Macklin are bumped down a spot each to make way for Proksa, as are Chavez and Rubio.

Lyell is curiously underrated, it seems to me.  When a guy like him is relegated to fighting 6-rounders, something’s wrong.
16) Nobuhiro Ishida (25-26)
Last Fight: 4/9/2011- TKO1 James Kirkland (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Ishida was looking to fight JC Chavez in September, but Chavez opted for a likely easier fight with the less-accomplished Ronald Hearns.  Ishida seems to be on everyone’s short list, but always loses out on the big fight since beating Kirkland.
17) Gennady Golovkin (16-16)
Last Fight: 6/17/2011- KO10 Kassim Ouma (UNR)
Next Fight: 10/15/2011- vs. Lajuan Simon (UNR)
Golovkin is now set to fight journeyman Lajuan Simon in October.
18) Avtandil Khurtsidze (16-36)
Last Fight: 6/11/2011- KO1 Dionisio Miranda (UNR)
Next Fight: 10/3/2012- vs. Jason LeHoullier (UNR)
Khurtsidze will stay busy on Monday, October 3, against journeyman Jason LeHoullier.
19) Demetrius Andrade (7-7)
Last Fight: 9/21/2011- RTD3 Saul Duran (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
20) Darren Barker (7-36)
Last Fight: 10/1/2011- L(KO11) vs. Champ Sergio Martinez
Next Fight: Unknown
A respectable effort with a less than respectable ending against Martinez.
