Dan’s Top 20 (Weeks in Current Position-Weeks in Top 10 if applicable-Weeks in Top 20)
Champ: None
1) Carlos Molina (43-125-140)
Last Fight: 9/14/2013- W (SD12) vs. #5 Ishe Smith
Next Fight: Unknown
Molina is dreaming of a fight with Canelo.  But it’s just a dream.  Molina’s style and low-profile makes him essentially unpromotable, and he would be a serious threat to win that fight.  No chance Golden Boy puts it together.  On a possibly more realistic note, Demetrius Andrade wants him.
2) Floyd Mayweather, Jr. (11-11-11)
Last Fight: 9/14/2013- W* (MD12) vs. #2 Saul Alvarez
Next Fight: Unknown
Mayweather intends to fight twice in 2014: on May 3 and September 13, if all goes to plan.  Amir Khan is the rumored opponent for May 3.  Bradley is getting a bit of buzz lately, too, as is Bernard Hopkins, at middleweight- though Floyd Sr. has said the latter will never happen.
3) Saul Alvarez (11-143-158)
Last Fight: 9/14/2013- L* (MD12) vs. WW Champion Floyd Mayweather
Next Fight: 3/8/2014- vs. Unknown Opponent
Alvarez will be back on March 8.  He’s hoping for either Cotto or Sergio.  After that, he expects to fight two additional times in 2014.
4) Austin Trout (11-78-147)
Last Fight: 4/20/2013- L* (UD12) vs. #2 Saul Alvarez
Next Fight: 12/7/2013- vs. #5 Erislandy Lara
It looks like Lara-Trout for December 7 is a done deal.
5) Erislandy Lara (11-125-147)
Last Fight: 6/8/2013- TKO10 #8 Alfredo Angulo
Next Fight: 12/7/2013- vs. #4 Austin Trout
See Trout’s note, above.
6) Ishe Smith (11-40-40)
Last Fight: 9/14/2013- L (SD12) vs. #1 Carlos Molina
Next Fight: Unknown
Smith sounds like he’s open to a variety of options for his next fight.  Anything from a Molina rematch, to Trout, to Angulo or Lara.  And even more various than that- he says he wants one UFC fight.  He’s also been in a war of words with Shane Mosley recently.
7) Miguel Cotto (11-182-182)
Last Fight: 10/5/2013- TKO3 #11 Delvin Rodriguez
Next Fight: Unknown
Cotto reportedly has a $10 million offer to fight Canelo on the table, and is also being courted by Sergio Martinez.
8) Cornelius Bundrage (11-173-173)
Last Fight: 2/23/2013- L (MD12) vs. Ishe Smith (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Bundrage has been approved to fight Joey Hernandez in an IBF eliminator.  Golden Boy won the purse bid at a paltry $11,000, meaning Bundrage will bank just $6,600.  The fight appears likely for Indio, California on January 24.
9) Alfredo Angulo (11-218-218)
Last Fight: 6/8/2013- L (TKO10) vs. #4 Erislandy Lara
Next Fight: Unknown
Angulo may be returning in January, and Carlos Molina has been discussed as a possible foe.
10) Sergey Rabchenko (30-30-76)
Last Fight: 11/16/2013- UD12 Bradley Pryce (UNR)

Next Fight: Unknown
Rabchenko is in line for an alphabet eliminator at any time.
11) Javier Maciel (5-5)
Last Fight: 10/26/2013- Robbery L (SD12) vs. #14 Brian Rose
Next Fight: Unknown
The one upside to a guy being robbed of a win that should have propelled him very near the top 10 is that it allows me to shine a light on the incompetence and/or corruption that caused the situation by ranking him exactly where he deserves, despite their attempts.
12) Demetrius Andrade (3-3)
Last Fight: 11/9/2013- W* (SD12) vs. #13 Vanes Martirosyan
Next Fight: Unknown
Andrade wants to unify against Carlos Molina, but negotiations are underway for a Brian Rose fight.
13) Delvin Rodriguez (3-124)
Last Fight: 10/5/2013- L (TKO3) vs. #7 Miguel Cotto
Next Fight: Unknown
Rodriguez appears to be solid against borderline top-10 types (see Wolak), but completely out of his depth at just a tad higher level.
14) Vanes Martirosyan (3-130)
Last Fight: 11/9/2013- L* (SD12) vs. Demetrius Andrade (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
15) Willie Nelson (3-39)
Last Fight: 6/29/2013- UD10 Luciano Cuello (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Nelson has injured his elbow, and his middleweight fight with Macklin has been cancelled as a result.
16) Brian Rose (3-36)
Last Fight: 10/26/2013- Robbery W (Draw at best) vs. Javier Maciel (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Rose will be fighting Andrade for his alphabet title at some point.  Totally undeserved, although the WBO title  at 154 is particularly meaningless already, having been handed to the very mediocre Zaurbek Baysangurov before being contested between two prospects.
17) Jermell Charlo (3-25)
Last Fight: 10/14/2013- TKO10 Jose Angel Rodriguez (UNR)
Next Fight: 1/25/2014- vs. Gabriel Rosado (UNR)
Charlo gets likely his toughest test to date in former junior middleweight contender Gabe Rosado, who has recently been used as an opponent at 160, but with mixed results.
18) Yuri Foreman (3-44)
Last Fight: 11/12/2013- KO1 Javier Gomez (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
19) Jack Culcay (3-8)
Last Fight: 10/26/2013- W* (UD12) vs. #17 Guido Pitto
Next Fight: Unknown
Culcay is expected back in December.
20) Guido Pitto (3-31)
Last Fight: 10/26/2013- L* (UD12) vs. #20 Jack Culcay
Next Fight: Unknown
Pitto wants a 3rd fight with Mateo Veron, whom he pretty much dominated- but still somehow lost to- in 2012.

The Week Ahead: In a long-awaited fight that will certainly affect the rankings, #4 Welterweight Shane Mosley and #10 Middleweight Anthony Mundine collide at 154, and in doing so will put the old adage that a good big man will beat a good little man to the test.

Friday in Tokyo, Japanese gatekeeper Tadashi Yuba defends his national title against high-level journeyman Yoshihisa Tonimura.

Junior Middleweight: 2013, Nov 18-24

#18 Yuri Foreman- not noted as a puncher- was nevertheless able to get his weak opponent, Javier Gomez, out of there in the first first round by knockout in Hollywood, Florida on Tuesday.

The following night in Sao Paolo, undefeated prospect Patrick Teixeira took care of Alejandro Falliga- an Argentine former fringe contender turned journeyman- in 5 rounds via TKO.

And Saturday in Bulgaria, #10 Sergey Rabchenko got a tougher than expected test from Welsh journeyman Bradley Pryce.  Rabchenko was his normal consistently aggressive self, but he pretty much always came in the front door, and his defense was lacking enough to give Pryce his moments.  On the bright side, Rabchenko banged away for twelve solid rounds and never appeared to tire much, so you can’t really take much away from him except to say that he couldn’t quite stop a really tough guy.  Pryce was given a standing 8 in the 3rd and appeared done in the corner after that round, but the guy was all guts.  My final score: 116-111.

No changes this week.

Junior Middleweight: 2012, Dec 10-16

Saturday in Spodek, Poland, undefeated Polish prospect Damian Jonak got a comfortable 12-round decision win over Belgium-based Ghanaian gatekeeper Jackson Osei Bonsu, but came in as a small middleweight at 155, while Bonsu was under 154.  As a result, he still has yet to earn a significant win as a junior middleweight.  He may get some considering for this win in the future, but as of now he’s technically not eligible for consideration.  What a difference a pound makes.

Guido Pitto, an Argentine prospect that was robbed in his only loss, stopped less proven one-loss Lebanese prospect Reda Zam Zam in the 8th round in Herning, Denmark on the same night.  The scorecards were in position for a close split draw at the time of the stoppage, but considering Zam Zam is based in Denmark it wouldn’t surprise me if Pitto was winning every round in reality.

Roberto Garcia’s fight with Inocente Fiz failed to come off for the second consecutive time at the last minute.

No changes to the rankings.

Later that night in L.A., #9 Alfredo Angulo continues his comeback against undersized but game Mexican action fighter Jorge Silva, who is really a welterweight, but at least showed some quality at that weight via a clear-cut draw with highly-regarded Japanese prospect Yoshihiro Kamegai in October.

Junior Middleweight: 2012, Dec 3-9

Posted in Junior Middleweight, Rankings with tags , , , , , , , on May 13, 2013 by danboxing
Saturday at Madison Square Garden in New York, Austin Trout made the transition from contender to star by soundly outboxing future Hall of Famer Miguel Cotto.  In doing so, he looked both much bigger and also more skilled than Cotto, while keeping the Puerto Rican superstar on the outside too much to land anything big against him.  My card read 117-111 for Trout, which was the same as John Poturaj (probably my favorite judge) and Steve Weisfeld.  Adelaide Byrd had it even wider at 119-109.  No doubt of the winner, as I thought if you swung the close rounds all to one guy, it would have been anywhere between 115-113 Trout and 119-109 Trout.

On the non-TV undercard, borderline top-50 fighter Jorge Melendez of Puerto Rico dropped low-level journeyman James Winchester in rounds 2 and 3, before eventually stopping him on his feet early in the 4th.  Winchester was a late replacement for similarly no-hope Mexican journeyman Cesar Bazan.  The fight was contested at a 155-pound contract weight.

Trout cuts his ranking in half, parking at #4.  Cotto falls just one place to #7, since Kirkland’s Ishida and Molina performances still weigh him down a bit too much.  Lara, Mayweather, and Kirkland are also forced down a spot in the re-alignment.

#5 Erislandy Lara’s fight with Ronald Hearns ended up a middleweight tilt, so I have given that the full treatment there and won’t go into it here.  The other Friday fight didn’t happen at all between Mateo Veron and Guido Pitto.

The weekend’s sole survivor at junior middleweight was Polish prospect Damian Jonak’s bout with Brazilian journeyman Anderson Clayton.  Jonak was fairly dominant in winning a 10-round decision.

No changes.

Junior Middleweight: 2012, Feb 20-26

In last week’s biggest fight, #13 Paul Williams won a dominant 12 round decision over #17 Middleweight and inactive fringe contender at this weight, Nobuhiro Ishida, in Corpus Christi, Texas.  Both guys are exceptionally tall and rangy, but Williams was vastly better at shortening up and fighting in close.  He capitalized on this advantage by smothering Ishida’s attack while still landing his own shots.  Ishida fought hard, but couldn’t string together enough moments to win any rounds.

In other Saturday action, undefeated Polish prospect Damian Jonak stopped mediocre journeyman Sebastian Skrzypczynki in Raciborz, Poland.

Friday night in Santa Ynez, California, gatekeeper Billy Lyell put up a game effort and w0n nearly his share of rounds, but was edged out by the superior size and fundamental technique of undefeated prospect Jonathan Gonzalez.  Gonzalez won’t benefit from this at 154, though, since he came in at the contract weight of 156 compared to Lyell’s 154.

Williams went a long way toward atoning for his loss to Lara with this performance, rising all the way to #7.  I had to spend about 20 minutes just staring at the records of William and last week’s #7 Alfredo Angulo to try and determine who would claim that spot.  Williams has by far the single best win, over #2 Verno Phillips back in November ’08.  But his quality wins were interrupted by the relatively recent drubbing he took from Erislandy Lara- ranked only #17 at the time.  Angulo lost to a very down-and-out version of James Kirkland who was effectively coming off a devastating upset loss to Ishida, and also was outboxed by Kermit Cintron.  Williams technically owns a win over Cintron, but it was the result of just over 3 rounds that Cintron arguably won anyway, and which I view as a no contest due to a Cintron injury.  And Angulo has a much larger body of quality work at this weight than does Williams.  What tipped the scales for me was a comparison of each man’s last fight.  Angulo was stopped by the guy that was wiped out by Ishida, albeit an inspired version.  Williams dominated the guy that wiped out the guy that Angulo lost to.  So Williams passes Angulo, but can’t overcome Carlos Molina at #6 due in part to Molina having performed better against Lara than did Williams.  Ishida fails to gain consideration for a re-ranking, as he came in a pound over the divisional limit and thus still hasn’t fought at 154 since 2010.  Everyone ranked #7-12 last week drops a spot, including Cory Spinks, who exits the top 10 after just 3 weeks in.
