#3 Gennady Golovkin and junior middle contender Gabriel Rosado met up at MSG Saturday, and the fight progressed about exactly as I would have predicted.  Both guys threw and landed hard punches, but ultimately Golovkin was a little too big and a little too good, and he won arguably every round.  That is, until he busted up Rosado so badly that Rosado could no longer see the punches coming, prompting his corner to stop the fight.

The same night in Uncasville, CT,  former top super middleweight prospect Curtis Stevens- who took more than two years off after an upset loss to Jesse Brinkley in 2010- made a big statement that he is back, dropping down to middleweight for the first time in his career and stopping gatekeeper Elvin Ayala just over a minute into the fight.  Ayala was clocked with a left hook that sent him down, and he was completely done from that point on.  Referee Tony Chiarantano inexplicably allowed Ayala to continue after the first knockdown, while totally defenseless and unable to stand up straight.  Thanks to Chiarantano, Ayala absorbed a barrage of additional punishment, including a second nearly identical left hook that sent him flopping to the canvas for a second time.  Only then did Chiarantano call an end to the slaughter.

On the previous evening in Junin, Argentina, local gatekeeper Mateo Veron managed only a close 6-round majority decision over mediocre journeyman Abel Adriel.

Golovkin’s win fails to move him past Felix Sturm.  Rosado equates to something like a top 10 middleweight based on his success at 154, but he cannot be much help to the Kazakh in terms of quantity of such wins.  Practically speaking, Golovkin would need a win over Sturm, Geale, or Martinez to advance, or would need Geale or Sturm to experience the kind of struggles that Sturm encountered in 2011.

Stevens is a different matter.  His win was very impressive, and his struggles in the past were now long ago, and in a higher weight class.  He debuts at #18, forcing Makoto Fuchigami out after just 4 weeks.  Ishida and Vera each backtrack one spot, as well.

Godoy went life and death with solid journeyman Heiland.  He’s going to have to do better than that when he fights legitimate top 50 opposition, or his time in the top 20 will be very short.  Hell of a fight, though.
19) Nobuhiro Ishida (8-20)
Last Fight: 5/1/2012- L(UD12) vs. #8 Dmitry Pirog
Next Fight: Unknown
Barely challenged Pirog at all, but has enough mileage left on the Kirkland upset to remain ranked for the moment.
20) Peter Quillin (8-8)
Last Fight: 6/2/2012- UD10 Winky Wright (UNR)
Next Fight: 9/8/2012- vs. #11 Marco Antonio Rubio
Quillin is set to return on September 8, and might be fighting Rubio.

The Week Ahead: #15 Max Bursak will fight Estonian journeyman Sergei Melis in Odessa, Ukraine.

Later that night in Connecticut, gatekeeper Elvin Ayala takes on journeyman John Mackey.

Middleweight: 2012, Apr 2-8

Posted in Middleweight, Rankings with tags , , , , , , , on November 17, 2012 by danboxing
Gatekeeper Elvin Ayala didn’t look particularly sharp against short-notice replacement opponent Eric Mitchell, but still did plenty enough to win in the Friday Night Fights co-feature with a solid 8-round decision.  Ayala had been scheduled to fight a slightly better journeyman in Hector Camacho, Jr.

No changes to the rankings.

Dan’s Top 20 (Weeks in Current Position-Weeks in Top 10 if applicable-Weeks in Top 20)
Champ: Sergio Martinez (103-103-103)
Last Fight: 3/17/2012- RTD11 #3 Matthew Macklin
Next Fight: 9/15/2012- vs. Unknown Opponent
Chavez vs. Lee, with the winner to fight Sergio appears to be very much in play, while Mayweather apparently still remains on the table.
1) Daniel Geale (41-146-146)
Last Fight: 3/7/2012- UD12 #11 Osumanu Adama
Next Fight: Unknown
Geale is looking at possibly fighting Martinez or Pirog next.
2) Grzegorz Proksa (27-51-51)
Last Fight: 3/17/2012- L*(MD12) vs. Kerry Hope (UNR) (Robbery)
Next Fight: Unknown
Proksa wants a rematch in the worst kind of way, but his cut may keep him out 5-6 months.  Kerry Hope has audaciously suggested that Proksa (who clearly beat him in reality) might need to build to the rematch.
3) Julio Cesar Chavez, Jr. (3-44-62)
Last Fight: 2/4/2012- UD12 #10 Marco Antonio Rubio
Next Fight: 6/16/2012- vs. Unknown Opponent
Chavez appeared set to fight Martin Murray in June, but visa issued scuttled that matchup.  It now appears that it will be Andy Lee or Vanes Martirosyan in June, instead.  There is also definitely activity toward a September match with Martinez, though negotiations hit a roadblock recently when Chavez refused Olympic drug testing.
4) Matthew Macklin (3-41-132)
Last Fight: 3/17/2012- L(RTD11) vs. Champ Sergio Martinez
Next Fight: Unknown
Macklin deserves a break after a taxing effort against Martinez.
5) Felix Sturm (9-446-446)
Last Fight: 12/2/2012- Draw (SD12) vs. Martin Murray (UNR)
Next Fight: 4/13/2012- vs. Sebastian Zbik (UNR)
A few weeks ago, it looked like Sturm would be promoting Zbik’s fight with Proksa.  Now he’s fighting Zbik instead, after Zbik showed his disgust for Sturm by pulling out.
6) Hassan N’Dam N’Jikam (9-75-75)
Last Fight: 4/2/2011- UD12 Giovanni Lorenzo (UNR)
Next Fight: 5/4/2012- vs. #15 Max Bursak
Originally rumored for April 20 in Equatorial Guinea, N’Dam will now fight Bursak in France two weeks later, instead.
7) Martin Murray (9-18-18)
Last Fight: 12/2/2011- Draw(SD12) vs. #3 Felix Sturm
Next Fight: Unknown
Murray ran into visa problems (the customs kind, not the credit kind), scuttling a big payday against Chavez.
8) Dmitry Pirog (18-88-88)
Last Fight: 9/25/2011- RTD10 Gennady Martirosyan (UNR)

9) Anthony Mundine (5-9-62)

Next Fight: Unknown
Mundine wants Chavez foremost, but would settle for Trout or Geale.

Last Fight: 2/19/2012- UD12 #15 Garth Wood
Next Fight: Unknown
11) Marco Antonio Rubio (4-62)

Rubio is reportedly looking at a July fight with Ricardo Mayorga.
12) Osumanu Adama (4-54)
Last Fight: 3/7/2012- L(UD12) vs. #1 Daniel Geale
Next Fight: Unknown
Adama came up short against Geale, but has nothing to be ashamed of.  He frequently took the #1 contender out of his game plan and looked entirely in his league at that lofty level.
13) Paul Williams (5-7)
Last Fight: 2/18/2012- UD12 #17 Nobuhiro Ishida (as JMW)
Next Fight: Unknown
14) Avtandil Khurtsidze (5-62)

16) Gennady Golovkin (5-42)

Barker bowed out of opportunities to fight Murray and Pirog, and now we have a possible reason as he has apparently been injured for a while, needs surgery, and is done until the fall.
19) Billi Godoy (5-24)
Last Fight: 11/12/2011- TKO1 Luciano Silva (UNR)
Next Fight: 4/13/2012- vs. Carlos Baldomir (UNR)

Next Fight: Unknown
Ishida might be working on fighting Pirog on May 1.

Last Fight: 3/17/2012- RTD11 #3 Matthew Macklin
Next Fight: 9/15/2012- vs. Unknown Opponent
The Champ already has September 15 set aside for his next fight.  He’s hoping for Chavez, but is also cultivating Geale as a backup plan.  Mundine, Lee, Kirkland, and Mayweather have all been floated under various scenarios, as well.
1) Daniel Geale (40-145-145)
Last Fight: 3/7/2012- UD12 #11 Osumanu Adama
Next Fight: Unknown
Geale is looking at possibly fighting Martinez or Pirog next.
2) Grzegorz Proksa (26-50-50)
Last Fight: 3/17/2012- L*(MD12) vs. Kerry Hope (UNR) (Robbery)
Next Fight: Unknown

3) Julio Cesar Chavez, Jr. (2-43-61)
Last Fight: 2/4/2012- UD12 #10 Marco Antonio Rubio

4) Matthew Macklin (2-40-131)

N’Dam will probably fight Bursak on April 20 in Equatorial Guinea.
7) Martin Murray (8-17-17)
Last Fight: 12/2/2011- Draw(SD12) vs. #3 Felix Sturm
Next Fight: Unknown
Murray ran into Visa problems (the customs kind, not the credit kind), scuttling a big payday against Chavez.

Last Fight: 9/25/2011- RTD10 Gennady Martirosyan (UNR)
Next Fight: 5/1/2012- vs. Unknown Opponent
Bouncing back relatively quickly from a shoulder injury, Pirog has now reserved a May 1 date in Moscow.  Bursak was rumored, but it appears Darren Barker really was the guy, until it was revealed that Barker’s been injured all along.

The Week Ahead: Gatekeeper Elvin Ayala fights journeyman Hector Camacho, Jr. on Friday Night Fights from Connecticut.

Middleweight: 2011, Oct 31- Nov 6

Posted in Middleweight, Rankings with tags , , , , , , , on October 2, 2012 by danboxing
Time to call out the posse, because there was an absolute robbery on the ShoBox telecast from New Jersey on Friday.  Undefeated prospect Brandon Gonzales proved to be in WAY over his head against Ghanaian gatekeeper Ossie Duran who, though clearly slower and less athletic than his younger opponent, was able to get potshots in with a good deal of consistency against Gonzales, for whom consistency wasn’t in the vocabulary.  Except that he consistently lost rounds.

But that’s where the robbery comes in.  Julie Lederman and John McKaie….it’s really had to believe that judges can be this bad.  And it wasn’t just the one fight.  In the co-feature, Artemio Reyes lost at most 1 round, and yet Lederman gave his opponent 3, and McKaie gave 2.  But Gonzales-Duran was sooo much worse.  Gonzales won between 0-2 of the 8 rounds.  Lederman and McKaie somehow gave him six!!!!  SIX!!!!  I’m no math major, but I’m pretty sure if you flipped a coin, you would have come up with a better card than those two something like 9 of 10 times.  This was literally one of the worst decisions I’ve ever seen.  Why are these judges allowed to keep working?  I mean of the six rounds in which there was legitimately a clear winner, the two of them fully botched at least four.  The only sport that we allow that high a failure rate is baseball, among hitters.  This is pathetic.  This wasn’t a close fight, nor a particularly hard one to score.  And the decision was a disgrace.  But God bless George Hill, who had it exactly right at 78-74 Duran.

So needless to say, this was a win for Duran in my book.  But Gonzales lacked the resume for the win to do Duran any good for our purposes.  Also, for whatever it’s worth, the fight was contested a pound or so over the divisional limit.  No changes to the rankings this week.

Dan’s Top 20 (Weeks in Current Position-Weeks in Top 10 if applicable-Weeks in Top 20)
Champ: Sergio Martinez (81-81-81)
Last Fight: 10/1/2011- KO11 #20 Darren Barker
Next Fight: Unknown
Macklin and Lee both called Sergio out immediately after his less than dominant victory over Barker, as has Pirog- whose offer to fight Sergio in Moscow is reportedly some kind of record.  Sergio expressed interest in the winner of Cotto-Margarito, and also shot down any suggestion of him moving up to 168.  He still wants Chavez, who claims he’d be interested for the right money.  Pacquiao has also been mentioned, but the Filipino superstar would only be interested if Sergio could make 147.  Sergio thinks he could make 150.
1) Daniel Geale (19-124-124)
Last Fight: 8/31/2011- UD12 Eromosele Albert (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Geale says he’s 90% sure he’ll be fighting Pirog on New Year’s Eve.
2) Grzegorz Proksa (5-29-29)
Last Fight: 10/1/2011- RTD3 #4 Sebastian Sylvester
Next Fight: Unknown
After destroying Sylvester, Proksa may be in for a fight with fringe contender Sebastian Zbik next.
3) Felix Sturm (5-424-424)
Last Fight: 6/25/2011- W*(SD12) vs. #11 Matthew Macklin
Next Fight: 12/2/2012- vs. Martin Murray (UNR)
Apparently ducking a rematch with British contender Matthew Macklin, Sturm will instead fight his countryman, undefeated prospect Martin Murray, in Mannheim.
4) Matthew Macklin (5-19-110)
Last Fight: 6/25/2011- L*(SD12) vs. #1 Felix Sturm
Next Fight: Unknown
Macklin couldn’t secure a rematch of his borderline robbery loss to Sturm, as the German has opted to fight countryman Martin Murray, instead.
5) Hassan N’Dam N’Jikam (17-53-53)
Last Fight: 4/2/2011- UD12 Giovanni Lorenzo (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
A fight rumored to be in the works with Gennady Golovkin has reportedly been scuttled by N’Dam’s unwillingness to fight the Kazakh, but N’Dam says he wants to fight someone in January.
6) Dmitry Pirog (17-66-66)
Last Fight: 9/25/2011- RTD10 Gennady Martirosyan (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Geale says there’s a 90% chance he’ll be fighting Pirog on New Year’s Eve.
7) Sebastian Sylvester (5-325-325)
Last Fight: 10/1/2011- L(RTD3) vs. #9 Grzegorz Proksa
Next Fight: Unknown
Sylvester may be getting long in the tooth after being destroyed by Proksa.
8) Julio Cesar Chavez, Jr. (5-22-40)
Last Fight: 6/4/2011- W(MD12) vs. #19 Sebastian Zbik
Next Fight: 11/19/2011- vs. Peter Manfredo, Jr. (UNR)
Chavez is now claiming a hand injury, and will likely now skip his scheduled fight with Ronald Hearns in September and go straight to his second scheduled fight with Peter Manfredo in November.
9) Marco Antonio Rubio (5-30-40)
Last Fight: 9/3/2011- TKO5 Mohammed Akrong (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
The WBC wants Rubio to fight Martinez, with the winner to face Chavez.
10) Anthony Mundine (17-17-40)
Last Fight: 10/19/2011- UD12 Rigoberto Alvarez (UNR) (at JMW)
Next Fight: Unknown
Mundine believes he’s been blacklisted in the US for comments he made in 2001 blaming the US for 9/11 and supporting Al Quaeda.  Well boo-hoo, asshole.  Austin Trout is also trying to make a fight with Mundine.
11) Osumanu Adama (4-32)
Last Fight: 10/6/2011- TKO9 Roman Karmazin (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Adama has now quietly put together a really respectable resume after battering Karmazin.
12) Max Bursak (4-40)
Last Fight: 10/22/2011- TKO3 Abdulaziz Matazimov (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Bursak had little trouble with his latest weak opponent.
13) Paul Williams (17-134)
Last Fight: 7/9/2011- W*(MD12) vs. JMW #15 Erislandy Lara (at JMW)
Next Fight: Unknown
Lara handled him easily despite what the awful judges said, and his poor performance earns him a demotion even though the fight took place at JMW.
14) Garth Wood (3-40)
Last Fight: 4/13/2011- L (UD10) vs. #20 Anthony Mundine
Next Fight: Unknown
Wood appeared set to fight journyeman Johannes Mwetupunga on the Geale-Albert undercard, but pulled out of that fight.
15) Nobuhiro Ishida (2-30)
Last Fight: 4/9/2011- TKO1 James Kirkland (UNR)
Next Fight: 12/17/2011- vs. #17 Avtandil Khurtsidze
Ishida is fighting Khurtsidze in the Ukraine a week before Christmas.
16) Gennady Golovkin (2-20)
Last Fight: 6/17/2011- KO10 Kassim Ouma (UNR)
Next Fight: 12/9/2011- vs. Lajuan Simon (UNR)
Golovkin is now set to fight journeyman Lajuan Simon in December.
17) Avtandil Khurtsidze (2-40)
Last Fight: 10/3/2012- TKO2 Jason LeHoullier (at SMW)
Next Fight: 12/17/2011- vs. #15 Nobuhiro Ishida
See Ishida’s notes, above.

Last Fight: 10/8/2011- W(TD4) vs. Claudio Abalos (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown

The Week Ahead: A ton of good fights this week:

Friday in Indio, California, fringe contender Sergio Mora takes on Mexican journeyman Jose Flores, who was a contender 10-15 years ago.

Saturday in London, American gatekeeper Elvin Ayala and Polish fringe contender Patrick Majewski are both in action against journeyman opponents- Ayala against Mexican Juan Astorga, and Majewski against Colombian Jose Miguel Torres.

That same night in Mexico, on the Kirkland-Angulo undercard, Contender Peter Quillin and gatekeeper Craig McEwan meet up in a battle of well-known middleweights that have never actually fought a significant fight under the middleweight limit.  We’ll see what their weights are for this fight.
