One-loss Australian prospect Jarrod Fletcher stopped low-level Ghanaian journeyman Philip Kotey in 6, having dropped him in the 3rd and swept every round.  No changes to the rankings.

Dan’s Top 20 (Weeks in Current Position-Weeks in Top 10 if applicable-Weeks in Top 20)
Champ: Sergio Martinez (161-161-161)
Last Fight: 4/27/2013- UD12* #9 Martin Murray (Robbery- draw at best)
Next Fight: Unknown
In addition to rightfully doing no better than a draw while beating Murray by way of robbery, Martinez has apparently re-injured his hand and possibly his knee, and is expected to be out of action until 2014.  His mandatory for now is Marco Antonio Rubio, though it’s likely the WBC will pull an Andre Ward and take the full title from him before he returns.  He may take that as an opportunity to go for a much more lucrative Chavez rematch, instead.
1) Martin Murray (3-76-76)
Last Fight: 4/27/2013- L* (UD12) vs. Champ Sergio Martinez (Robbery- D at worst)
Next Fight: Unknown
Murray absolutely deserves to be Champion, but there is an argument that Sergio deserved a draw, and thus he retains the Championship by the slimmest margin possible.  There’s absolutely no way Murray lost the fight.  I hope (but doubt) that he’ll get a rematch.  Chavez is also trying to get Murray to replace Vera as his August 3 opponent.
2) Daniel Geale (3-204-204)
Last Fight: 1/30/2013- UD12 #11 Anthony Mundine
Next Fight: Unknown
Geale hopes to announce his next fight this week.  Darren Barker and a stay-busy fight have both been floated.
3) Felix Sturm (3-504-504)
Last Fight: 2/1/2013- L* (UD12) vs. #12 Sam Soliman (on PEDs)
Next Fight: Unknown
The IBF has suspended Sam Soliman for 9 months, and will put Sturm in another eliminator for a shot at Geale.
4) Gennady Golovkin (3-37-100)
Last Fight: 3/30/2013- KO3 #19 Nobuhiro Ishida
Next Fight: 6/29/2013- vs. #5 Matthew Macklin
Golovkin-Macklin appears to be on for June 29 on HBO, and that’s huge.
5) Matthew Macklin (3-99-190)
Last Fight: 9/15/2012- TKO1 Joachim Alcine (UNR)
Next Fight: 6/29/2013- vs. #4 Gennady Golovkin
See Golovkin’s notes, above.
6) Julio Cesar Chavez, Jr. (3-102-120)
Last Fight: 9/15/2012- L (UD12) vs. Champ Sergio Martinez
Next Fight: 8/3/2013- vs. #18 Bryan Vera
Chavez has apparently settled on Bryan Vera for his next outing, which has been delayed to August 3.  He’s also trying to replace Vera with Martin Murray.
7) Peter Quillin (3-30-51)
Last Fight: 4/27/2013- TKO7 Fernando Guerrero (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Quillin looked pretty darned good and as powerful as ever against Guerrero, scoring 4 knockdowns and getting his man out of there.  He’s hoping to fight Geale next.
8) Dmitry Pirog (3-146-146)
Last Fight: 5/1/2012- UD12 #20 Nobuhiro Ishida
Next Fight: Unknown
After bleak reports of his back injury situation surfaced over recent weeks, finally we get a bit of hopeful news, as Pirog’s US promoter Art Pelullo says that Pirog is hoping to return in late August if all goes well.
9) Grzegorz Proksa (3-109-109)
Last Fight: 2/9/2013- UD6 Norbert Szekeres (UNR)
Next Fight: 6/28/2013- vs. Unknown Opponent
Proksa will bounce back from a hand injury and return on June 28 in the US.  No further details yet.
10) Hassan N’Dam N’Jikam (11-11-133)
Last Fight: 10/20/2012- L (UD12) vs. #20 Peter Quillin
Next Fight: Unknown
11) Marco Antonio Rubio (9-120)
Last Fight: 3/23/2013- UD12 Marcus Upshaw (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
With Martinez (for whom he is the mandatory) sidelined until 2014, Rubio may get a shot at Sergio’s alphabet belt against someone else in the interim.  Alternatively, I think he is also in line for Quillin’s belt, as well.
12) Anthony Mundine (9-120)
Last Fight: 1/30/2013- L (UD12) vs. #1 Daniel Geale
Next Fight: Unknown
Mundine expects to fight again in late June or July, but doesn’t know against whom or in what division yet.  He has hinted he may be moving back down to 154, and has recently agitated for fights with Trout and Mayweather- both of whom have bigger/smaller fish to fry, I would think.
13) Osumanu Adama (9-112)
Last Fight: 3/16/2012- W(SD10) vs. Grady Brewer (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Adama came in heavy and nearly lost to 42 year-old Grady Brewer.  The fact that he missed weight by only a half pound gives him the opportunity to schedule a middleweight fight by September 7 to maintain a ranking, though.
14) Akio Shibata (2-2)
Last Fight: W (TD9) vs. #18 Makoto Fuchigami
Next Fight: Unknown
Shibata made good on his move up to 160, becoming the clear Japanese champion and the best middleweight in Asia.
15) Darren Barker (2-83)
Last Fight: 3/9/2013- RTD4 Simone Rotolo (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
After apparently losing out to Vera and maybe also to Murray for a shot at Chavez, Barker is now setting his sites on Daniel Geale.
16) Max Bursak (2-120)
Last Fight: 2/2/2013- TKO3 Julien Marie Sainte (UNR)
Next Fight: 7/13/2013- vs. Prince Arron (UNR)
Bursak will defend his European belt against fallen former British 154 Champion Prince Arron on July 13.  This will be on the very good Monaco card that night.
17) Demetrius Andrade (2-91)
Last Fight: 1/25/2013- UD10 Freddy Hernandez (UNR) (at JMW)
Next Fight: 7/6/2013- vs. Zaurbek Baysangurov (UNR) (at JMW)
Andrade will finally have a significant fight at the 154 pound limit, as he challenges for the ridiculous title of Russia’s Zaurbek Baysangurov in Kiev.
18) Bryan Vera (2-30)
Last Fight: 3/29/2013- TKO7* Donatas Bondorovas (UNR)
Next Fight: 8/3/2013- vs. #6 Julio Cesar Chavez, Jr.
Vera’s fight with Chavez has been delayed to August 3, and Chavez appears willing to jump ship for Martin Murray if the opportunity arises.
19) Nobuhiro Ishida (4-63)
Last Fight: 3/30/2013- L (KO3) vs. #3 Gennady Golovkin
Next Fight: Unknown
Ishida said before the Golovkin fight that he’d retire if he lost.  But that could have just been posturing.  I won’t remove him as a retired fighter until I find some post-fight confirmation of his intentions.
20) Jose Miguel Torres (4-4)
Last Fight: 3/16/2013- TKO4 Javier Gonzalez (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Torres sneaks into the rankings based on a nearly 18 month old upset win over Patrick Majewski, but considering the awful opposition he has faced since, I’m not particularly happy about it.

The Week Ahead: Wednesday in New York, Andy Lee will see action against mid-level journeyman Darryl Cunningham.

The next night in Flemington, Australia, fringe contender Garth Wood looks to stay busy against low-level South African journeyman Virgil Kalakoda.

Finally, Friday in Moscow, 42 year-old gatekeeper Grady Brewer looks to do to undefeated but somewhat untested prospect Dmitry Chudinov what he did to Fernando Guerrero a couple years ago.  Brewer may still have some gas in the tank, but has been inconsistent- turning in fine performances against Adama and Guerrero, but laying eggs against Michael Medina and Demetrius Andrade.

Junior Middleweight: 2012, Aug 6-12

Saturday in Atlanta, gatekeeper Grady Brewer got a bit of a gift, as a win was handed to him when his opponent, Cuban journeyman Giorbis Barthelemy was disqualified for biting Brewer’s neck.  I’m not sure if it was intended as vampirism or some form of strange romantic gesture, but it probably earned the already thuggish Barthelemy a suspension, and certainly helped him lose a fight that he was by all accounts leading.  With Barthelemy having lost his last fight to Charles Whittaker, he was not at a high enough level to help Brewer in his search for a renewed ranking.  No changes this week.

Dan’s Top 20 (Weeks in Current Position-Weeks in Top 10 if applicable-Weeks in Top 20)
Champ: None
1) Saul Alvarez (14-75-90)
Last Fight: 5/5/2012- UD12 Shane Mosley (UNR)
Next Fight: 9/15/2012- vs. WW#? Josesito Lopez
Canelo will presumably be paying well for the privilege of making Josesito Lopez- a natural 140 pounder- move up to 154 after he made his bones at 147 with a shocking upset of would-be Alvarez opponent Victor Ortiz.  He is also planning a possible subsequent bout for December 8 already.
2) Carlos Molina (14-57-72)
Last Fight: 3/23/2012- L*(DQ10) vs. #3 James Kirkland (Robbery)
Next Fight: Unknown

3) Cornelius Bundrage (20-105-105)
Last Fight: 6/30/2012- TKO7 #11 Cory Spinks

4) Floyd Mayweather, Jr. (14-14-14)
Last Fight: 5/5/2012- UD12* #4 Miguel Cotto
Next Fight: Unknown
Floyd is out of jail, and  future fights against Pacquiao, Canelo, Khan, Cotto, Guerrero, and Ortiz have been mentioned.
5) Miguel Cotto (14-114-114)
Last Fight: 5/5/2012- L* (UD12) vs. WW #1 Floyd Mayweather, Jr.

6) Erislandy Lara (14-57-79)
Last Fight: 6/30/2012- UD10 Freddy Hernandez (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
After Martirosyan originally turned down a shot at Lara, it now looks like that fight will indeed happen.  Vanes says he’s all-in for it now after Canelo went elsewhere.  The fight would serve as an eliminator for a Canelo shot.
7) James Kirkland (14-40-40)
Last Fight: 3/24/2012- W*(DQ10) vs. #6 Carlos Molina (Robbery)
Next Fight: Unknown
Kirkland bailed almost immediately on a fight he signed with Canelo, and says he plans to return in October or November.
8) Austin Trout (10-10-79)
Last Fight: 6/2/2012- UD12 #13 Delvin Rodriguez
Next Fight: Unknown
9) Alfredo Angulo (10-150-150)
Last Fight: 11/5/2011- L (TKO6) vs. James Kirkland (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Troubling news.  Angulo has been detained by US authorities since at least January.  Apparently his only crime was being here on an expired Visa.  Don’t get me wrong.  I’m in favor of enforcing immigration laws, but to lock a guy up for months on end without so much as a trial?  Awful.  We’re rooting for you, Perro.
10) Gabriel Rosado (11-11-79)
Last Fight: 6/1/2013- TKO9 #19 Sechew Powell
Next Fight: 9/21/2012- vs. Charles Whittaker (UNR)
Rosado will get gatekeeper Charles Whittaker on September 21 in Bethlehem, PA, and the fight will be televised by NBC Sports.
11) Cory Spinks (8-28)
Last Fight: 6/30/2012- L (TKO7) vs. #3 Cornelius Bundrage
Next Fight: Unknown
Spinks failed to revenge his ugly 2010 TKO loss to Bundrage, but managed to look a little better and capture a round or two this time.
12) Sergey Rabchenko (8-8)
Last Fight: 6/16/2012- TKO7 #11 Ryan Rhodes
Next Fight: Unknown
Rabchenko is likely to defend his European title against France’s Cedric Vitu in his next fight.
13) Delvin Rodriguez (11-56)
Last Fight: 6/2/2012- L (UD12) vs. #12 Austin Trout
Next Fight: Unknown

Last Fight: 2/4/2012- TKO3 Troy Lowry (UNR)

Last Fight: 4/5/2012- TKO7 Salim Larbi (UNR)

16) Carlos Quintana (9-14)
Last Fight: 5/5/2012- TKO6 Deandre Latimore (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Quintana said he wanted Canelo in the immediate aftermath of his upset TKO of Deandre Latimore, and has since expressed interest in Cotto and Trout, as well.
17) Ryan Rhodes (8-146)
Last Fight: 6/16/2012- L (TKO7) vs. Sergey Rabchenko (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Rhodes says he has no plans to retire after losing to Rabchenko.
18) Sechew Powell (8-125)
Last Fight: 6/1/2012- L (TKO9) vs. #10 Gabriel Rosado
Next Fight: Unknown
19) Brian Rose (8-36)
Last Fight: 6/2/2012- W* (UD12) vs. Kris Carslaw (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Rose’s reign as British Champion hasn’t been the greatest- partly due to limited available opposition, and partly due to his own awful performance against Carslaw.
20) Roberto Garcia (8-9)
Last Fight: 3/23/2012- UD10 Antwone Smith (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown

The Week Ahead: Atlanta plays host to an interesting little fight between Oklahoma gatekeeper Grady Brewer and gatekeeper-like journeyman Giorbis Barthelemy of Miami by way of Cuba.  Both men are getting up there in age, and both are coming off losses in their last significant fights.

Junior Middleweight: 2012, Jul 23-29

Posted in Junior Middleweight, Rankings with tags , , , , , , , on April 17, 2013 by danboxing
Monday in Ballingao, The Phillipines, gatekeeper Mark Melligen stopped awful journeyman Dondon Lapuz in the first round of a fight that was a total waste of time from the moment it was signed.

Saturday in Tijuana, one-loss prospect Omar Chavez- the youngest son of Mexican legend Julio Cesar Chavez- looked for revenge against the only man to beat him.  That man is Jorge Paez, Jr.- the son, of course, of Mexican legend Jorge Paez.  The first 6 rounds could all have gone either way.  It was razor thin.  Paez had the effective aggression and ringe generalship on lock, keeping Chavez’s back to the ropes for the most part.  But Chavez made the judges’ job difficult by often appearing to land the better shots out of that disadvantageous position.  Paez seemed to fade a bit in the last few rounds, as Chavez began backing him up.  I had it 96-94 Chavez.  The judges had it unanimously 96-94 the other way.  I can’t really argue with that score, considering the nature of the first half of the fight.  I am surprised that all the judges reached the same conclusion, though.

For those of you who, like me, secretly thought that Javier Maciel might turn out to be an under-the-radar world-class junior middleweight after giving Dmitry Pirog all kinds of trouble at 160, here’s a bit of evidence to the contrary.  Maciel challenged Mateo Veron for the Argentine title Saturday in Escobar, and while he pulled out an otherwise toss-up fight with a much-needed knockdown in the final round, he was far from impressive given his Argentine/South American-level opponent.  Veron came in with the national title, but should have lost that title in his last fight against Guido Pitto, who clearly beat him.  He was no world-beater.  I had the fight 97-95 (applying the Argentine half-point scoring system).  The official judges all had it in a similar range of between 3 points to a half-point.  Maciel could have won a razor-thin split decision simply by winning the last round, but needed the knockdown to make it unanimous.

Maciel, Chavez, and Paez all managed to put themselves on the map to one extent or another, but none did anywhere near enough to claim a ranking in this tough division.

Last Fight: 6/2/2012- W* (UD12) vs. Kris Carslaw (UNR)

Rose’s reign as British Champion hasn’t been the greatest- partly due to limited available opposition, and partly due to his own awful performance against Carslaw.
20) Roberto Garcia (6-7)
Last Fight: 3/23/2012- UD10 Antwone Smith (UNR)

The Week Ahead: Atlanta plays host to an interesting little fight between Oklahoma gatekeeper Grady Brewer and gatekeeper-like journeyman Giorbis Barthelemy of Miami by way of Cuba.  Both men are getting up there in age, and both are coming off losses in their last significant fights.

Middleweight: 2013, Mar 18-24

Strange goings on in Lowell, Massachussetts on Saturday, as #11 Osumanu Adama turned in an underwhelming performance against gatekeeper Grady Brewer, who had seemed to be declining at 42.  Adama escaped with a split decision, but only by one round on one card.  In addition, he failed to make weight by a half-pound, and then apparently chose not to sweat off that half-pound, despite several regional titles being on the line.

The performance is obviously not worthy of a #11 contender.  Adama had not competed in slightly over a year leading up to the fight, and so his failure to make wait presents and issue as to whether he is to be removed.  Normally if a fighter fights within 2 pounds of the divisional limit within the year, he gets up to an additional 6 months to make weight.  This is the first time I’ve encountered a fighter doing so after a year but before being removed.  I think the spirit of the rule I’ve operated under to this point requires that he be given the extra time, and so he shall.

The previous night in Townsville, Australia, gatekeeper-level Australian Les Sherrington won a 5-round technical decision shutout over low-level Argentine journeyman Esteban Ponce after he found himself unable to continue with a cut suffered in a head clash during the opening round.

Now to Adama’s rank.  As I mentioned above, he is not to be removed at this time, buying himself another 5 months or so.  However, seeing as how he’s been inactive and performed poorly in this latest effort, a fresh review of his record is in order.  It’s a close call (made easier by this fight), but he falls two spots below Rubio and Mundine, settling at #13.

Dan’s Top 20 (Weeks in Current Position-Weeks in Top 10 if applicable-Weeks in Top 20)
Champ: Sergio Martinez (153-153-153)
Last Fight: 9/15/2012- UD12 #4 Julio Cesar Chavez, Jr.
Next Fight: 4/27/2013- vs. #9 Martin Murray
Martinez will look to come back strong from knee surgery when he takes on Martin Murray in Argentina on April 27.
1) Daniel Geale (91-196-196)
Last Fight: 1/30/2013- UD12 #11 Anthony Mundine
Next Fight: Unknown
With Soliman testing positive for a PED, his expected fight with Geale is probably out.  Perhaps a Sturm rematch is the most obvious follow-up.
2) Felix Sturm (3-496-496)
Last Fight: 2/1/2013- L* (UD12) vs. #12 Sam Soliman (on PEDs)
Next Fight: Unknown
Sturm says on Twitter that he’s resumed light training, and will soon announce his plans for his next fight, which he describes as a big event.
3) Gennady Golovkin (3-29-92)
Last Fight: 1/19/2013- TKO7 JMW #? Gabriel Rosado

Next Fight: 3/30/2013- vs. #19 Nobuhiro Ishida
Golovkin will headline the Super 4 Light Heavyweight Tourney card in Monaco, fighting Nobuhiro Ishida, who is starting to lose all traces of the luster he gained by beating James Kirkland.
4) Matthew Macklin (3-91-182)
Last Fight: 9/15/2012- TKO1 Joachim Alcine (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Macklin reports that Andy Lee has turned down the opportunity to fight him in May on HBO.  If true, this is a bit embarrassing for Lee, who had previously called Macklin out.  Macklin has acknowledged the possibility of a huge fight with Golovkin in November or December.
5) Julio Cesar Chavez, Jr. (3-94-112)
Last Fight: 9/15/2012- L (UD12) vs. Champ Sergio Martinez
Next Fight: 6/22/2013- vs. Unknown Opponent
Chavez is looking to return on June 22, with Bryan Vera, Matthew Macklin, and Giovanni Lorenzo being considered.
6) Peter Quillin (3-22-43)
Last Fight: 10/20/2012- UD12 #6 Hassan N’Dam N’Jikam
Next Fight: 4/27/2013- vs. Fernando Guerrero (UNR)
Quillin’s fight with Guerrero has been postponed from February 9 to April 27 due to an injury to the card’s headliner, Danny Garcia.
7) Dmitry Pirog (3-138-138)
Last Fight: 5/1/2012- UD12 #20 Nobuhiro Ishida
Next Fight: Unknown
It sounds like Pirog has more than a run of the mill back injury.  His promoter calls his situation “spine trauma” he’s been nursing since the Maciel fight, and says that it “doesn’t look particularly good.”  It looks like a foregone conclusion that Pirog will be inactive for well over a year.  My mission between now and his May 1 anniversary will be to determine whether there’s a significant chance of a return in the foreseeable future.  There’s a fine line between giving an injured fighter time to recover and holding a spot for a guy that may not fight again for years, if ever.
8) Grzegorz Proksa (3-101-101)
Last Fight: 2/9/2013- UD6 Norbert Szekeres (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Proksa’s worthless fight with Szekeres came at a steep price, as he hurt his hand badly enough to scuttle a proposed 3/23 appearance on Friday Night Fights.
9) Martin Murray (3-68-68)
Last Fight: 11/24/2012- TKO6 Jorge Navarro (UNR)
Next Fight: 4/27/2013- vs. Champ Sergio Martinez
Murray will look to prove that he belongs at or above the level he achieved by drawing with Sturm when he fights the Champ in Argentina on April 27.
10) Hassan N’Dam N’Jikam (3-3-125)
Last Fight: 10/20/2012- L (UD12) vs. #20 Peter Quillin
Next Fight: Unknown

N’Dam was recently seen sparring at Mayweather’s gym with some of his top prospects.  This has fueled speculation of his possibly signing with Mayweather Promotions, himself.
11) Marco Antonio Rubio (1-112)
Last Fight: 12/22/2012- KO11 Michel Rosales (UNR)

Next Fight: 3/23/2013- vs. Marcus Upshaw (UNR)
Rubio is now part of Robert Garcia’s impressive stable of fighters, and has potential future rematch with Chavez and a likely mandatory against the Quillin-Guerrero winner.  For now, he’s fighting upset specialist Marcus Upshaw in late March.
12) Anthony Mundine (1-112)
Last Fight: 1/30/2013- L (UD12) vs. #1 Daniel Geale
Next Fight: Unknown
Mundine expects to fight again in June, but doesn’t know against whom or in what division yet.  He hopes to know by around the start of April, though.
13) Osumanu Adama (1-104)
Last Fight: 3/16/2012- W(SD10) vs. Grady Brewer (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Adama came in heavy and nearly lost to 42 year-old Grady Brewer.  The fact that he missed weight by only a half pound gives him the opportunity to schedule a middleweight fight by September 7 to maintain a ranking, though.
14) Darren Barker (2-75)
Last Fight: 3/9/2013- RTD4 Simone Rotolo (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Barker appears to be back from an injury-plagued spell.
15) Max Bursak (2-112)
Last Fight: 2/2/2013- TKO3 Julien Marie Sainte (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Bursak is now the EBU champion after destroying journeyman Sainte.
16) Demetrius Andrade (2-83)
Last Fight: 1/25/2013- UD10 Freddy Hernandez (UNR) (at JMW)
Next Fight: Unknown
Andrade has impliedly called out Keith Thurman, Erislandy Lara, and explicitly challenged Ishe Smith.
17) Bryan Vera (3-22)
Last Fight: 1/25/2013- TKO10 Sergei Dzinziruk (UNR)
Next Fight: 3/29/2013- vs. Donatus Bondorovas (UNR)
Vera stays busy on March 29, when he fights Lithuanian journeyman Donatus Bondorovas in New York on a Friday Night Fights card.  He is also being considered for a June 15 fight with JCC, Jr.
18) Curtis Stevens (3-9)
Last Fight: 1/19/2013- KO1 Elvin Ayala (UNR)
Next Fight: 4/20/2013- vs. Derrick Findley (UNR)
Stevens will fight on the Fury-Cunningham undercard at MSG on 4/20 against veteran journeyman Derrick Findley.
19) Nobuhiro Ishida (3-55)
Last Fight: 5/1/2012- L(UD12) vs. #8 Dmitry Pirog
Next Fight: 3/30/2013- vs. #3 Gennady Golovkin
Ishida is probably about to spend his last remaining bit of currency from the Kirkland win.  He would need an even more shocking upset to survive- much less beat- the rampaging Gennady Golovkin.
20) Makoto Fuchigami (3-3)
Last Fight: 10/12/2012- RTD6 Marlon Alta (UNR)
Next Fight: 4/30/2013- vs. Akio Shibata (UNR)
Fuchigami has a good domestic-level opportunity on his hands, fighting essentially a peer in junior middleweight fringe contender Akio Shibata.

The Week Ahead: Thursday in London, undefeated Hertfordshire prospect Billy Joe Saunders clashes with quality Manchester journeyman Matthew Hall.

Junior middleweight fringe contender Lukas Konecny moves up to challenge top-level French journeyman Karim Achour for a vacant alphabet European belt on the Abraham-Stieglitz undercard in Magdeburg.

Later that night, #11 Marco Antonio Rubio takes on upset specialist Marcus Upshaw in Uruapan, Mexico.

Middleweight: 2013, Mar 11-17

Posted in Middleweight, Rankings with tags , , , , , , , on March 12, 2013 by danboxing
Saturday in London, #16 Darren Barker dropped Italian Champion and borderline top 50 fighter Simone Rotolo in the first round, before ultimately Rotolo retired with an injured hand after the 4th.

That same night, Dominican gatekeeper Giovanni Lorenzo scored a side show of a 1st-round knockout over Miami’s Johnny Valentin.  Valentin is no less than 51 years old.  He last fought in 2004 and last won in 1998.  In all, he has just 3 wins (the first in 1986) in 31 fights.  To recap, he’s a 51 year old on a 15-fight winless streak dating back 15 years.  And somebody sanctioned this fight.  Kudos, Domican boxing authorities.  In fairness to Lorenzo- who I still believe should never have consented to this execution- Valentin was a late replacement for  Jairo Siris who, while awful, is awful on a much more reasonable level.

Finally, former top 10 junior middleweight Prince Arron barely squeaked by with a 6-round referee’s points decision in Manchester over low-level journeyman Tyan Booth.  Even in victory, this hurts Arron’s standing to the point that he’s probably no longer even a top 50 guy in this or any other division.

If only for having returned from a long spell of inactivity against top 50 opponents, Barker is able to advance to #14, thereby displacing Barker and Andrade.

Dan’s Top 20 (Weeks in Current Position-Weeks in Top 10 if applicable-Weeks in Top 20)
Champ: Sergio Martinez (152-152-152)
Last Fight: 9/15/2012- UD12 #4 Julio Cesar Chavez, Jr.
Next Fight: 4/27/2013- vs. #10 Martin Murray
Martinez will look to come back strong from knee surgery when he takes on Martin Murray in Argentina on April 27.
1) Daniel Geale (90-195-195)
Last Fight: 1/30/2013- UD12 #11 Anthony Mundine
Next Fight: Unknown
With Soliman testing positive for a PED, his expected fight with Geale is probably out.  Perhaps a Sturm rematch is the most obvious follow-up.
2) Felix Sturm (2-495-495)
Last Fight: 2/1/2013- L* (UD12) vs. #12 Sam Soliman (on PEDs)
Next Fight: Unknown
Sturm says on Twitter that he’s resuming light training this week, and will soon announce his plans for his next fight, which he describes as a big event.
3) Gennady Golovkin (2-28-91)
Last Fight: 1/19/2013- TKO7 JMW #? Gabriel Rosado

Next Fight: 3/30/2013- vs. #20 Nobuhiro Ishida
Golovkin will headline the Super 4 Light Heavyweight Tourney card in Monaco, fighting Nobuhiro Ishida, who is starting to lose all traces of the luster he gained by beating James Kirkland.
4) Matthew Macklin (2-90-181)
Last Fight: 9/15/2012- TKO1 Joachim Alcine (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Macklin reports that Andy Lee has turned down the opportunity to fight him in May on HBO.  If true, this is a bit embarrassing for Lee, who had previously called Macklin out.
5) Julio Cesar Chavez, Jr. (2-93-111)
Last Fight: 9/15/2012- L (UD12) vs. Champ Sergio Martinez
Next Fight: Unknown
Chavez finally got the details of his punishment from the Nevada comission.  He is suspended until June 15 and was fined 900k, or 30% of his purse from the Martinez fight.  He plans to come back on the first available day- June 15 itself, and has floated Bryan Vera and Matthew Macklin as possible opponents.  Macklin in particular would be a spectacular matchup and would likely justify the November rematch with Sergio that he’s shooting for if he pulls off the win.
6) Peter Quillin (2-21-42)
Last Fight: 10/20/2012- UD12 #6 Hassan N’Dam N’Jikam
Next Fight: 4/27/2013- vs. Fernando Guerrero (UNR)
Quillin’s fight with Guerrero has been postponed from February 9 to April 27 due to an injury to the card’s headliner, Danny Garcia.
7) Dmitry Pirog (2-137-137)
8) Grzegorz Proksa (2-100-100)
Last Fight: 2/9/2013- UD6 Norbert Szekeres (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Proksa’s worthless fight with Szekeres came at a steep price, as he hurt his hand badly enough to scuttle a proposed 3/23 appearance on Friday Night Fights.
9) Martin Murray (2-67-67)
Last Fight: 11/24/2012- TKO6 Jorge Navarro (UNR)
Next Fight: 4/27/2013- vs. Champ Sergio Martinez
Murray will look to prove that he belongs at or above the level he achieved by drawing with Sturm when he fights the Champ in Argentina on April 27.
10) Hassan N’Dam N’Jikam (2-2-124)
Last Fight: 10/20/2012- L (UD12) vs. #20 Peter Quillin
Next Fight: Unknown

N’Dam was recently seen sparring at Mayweather’s gym with some of his top prospects.  This has fueled speculation of his possibly signing with Mayweather Promotions, himself.
11) Osumanu Adama (2-103)
Last Fight: 3/7/2012- L(UD12) vs. #1 Daniel Geale
Next Fight: 3/16/2013- vs. Grady Brewer (UNR)
Adama’s return has been bumped up to March 16, when he’ll fight declining gatekeeper Grady Brewer in Lowell, Massachusetts.
12) Marco Antonio Rubio (2-111)
Last Fight: 12/22/2012- KO11 Michel Rosales (UNR)

Next Fight: 3/23/2013- vs. Marcus Upshaw (UNR)
Rubio is now part of Robert Garcia’s impressive stable of fighters, and has potential future rematch with Chavez and a likely mandatory against the Quillin-Guerrero winner.  For now, he’s fighting upset specialist Marcus Upshaw in late March.
13) Anthony Mundine (2-111)

Mundine expects to fight again in June, but doesn’t know against whom or in what division yet.  He hopes to know by around the start of April, though.
14) Darren Barker (1-74)

16) Demetrius Andrade (1-82)
Last Fight: 1/25/2013- UD10 Freddy Hernandez (UNR) (at JMW)
Next Fight: Unknown
On his recent ShoBox appearance, a big deal was made of Andrade’s speculated move up to 160 in the future.  But as his ranking would suggest, he’s already had at least one foot firmly planted in this division for quite some time.
17) Bryan Vera (2-21)
Last Fight: 1/25/2013- TKO10 Sergei Dzinziruk (UNR)
Next Fight: 3/29/2013- vs. Donatus Bondorovas (UNR)
Vera stays busy on March 29, when he fights Lithuanian journeyman Donatus Bondorovas in New York on a Friday Night Fights card.  He is also being considered for a June 15 fight with JCC, Jr.

19) Nobuhiro Ishida (2-54)
Last Fight: 5/1/2012- L(UD12) vs. #8 Dmitry Pirog
Next Fight: 3/30/2013- vs. #3 Gennady Golovkin

Next Fight: 4/30/2013- vs. Akio Shibata (UNR)
Fuchigami has a good domestic-level opportunity on his hands, fighting essentially a peer in junior middleweight fringe contender Akio Shibata.

The Week Ahead: Friday in Townsville, Australia, gatekeeper-level Australian Les Sherrington takes on low-level Argentine journeyman Esteban Ponce.

Saturday in Lowell, Massachusetts, #11 Osumanu Adama battles aging and apparently declining gatekeeper Grady Brewer.

Junior Middleweight: 2012, Mar 19-25

American expat fringe contender Charlie Ota stopped low-level journeyman Gundrick King at MSG on Saturday, knocking King down in the 6th and 7th, and ending with a four-punch combo later in that round.  It was the first career fight for native New Yorker Ota (whose real name is Charles Bellamy) outside Japan.

The British title eliminator between Sam Webb and Matthew Hall did not come off as scheduled, but will likely take place on a new date.

Last week’s #16 Yuri Foreman is removed, as he hasn’t fought or scheduled a fight in over a year.  Everyone ranked #17-20 last week moves up, and Anthony Mundine enters the rankings for (I believe) the first time since I began rating this division, at #20.

Dan’s Top 20 (Weeks in Current Position-Weeks in Top 10 if applicable-Weeks in Top 20)
Champ: None
1) Saul Alvarez (40-55-70)
Last Fight: 11/26/2011- TKO5 Kermit Cintron (UNR)
Next Fight: 5/5/2012- vs. Shane Mosley (UNR)
Canelo will look to retire an over the hill Shane Mosley on the Mayweather-Cotto undercard on May 5, with the winner reportedly to get a shot at the main event’s winner.  He’s already planning his return for September, too.
2) Cornelius Bundrage (40-85-85)
Last Fight: 6/25/2011- UD12 #11 Sechew Powell
Next Fight: Unknown
K9 is interested in Kirkland and Sergio Martinez.
3) James Kirkland (20-20-20)
Last Fight: 11/5/2011- TKO6 #4 Alfredo Angulo
Next Fight: 3/24/2012-  vs. #6 Carlos Molina
Kirkland-Molina has a new date of March 24, in Houston.
4) Miguel Cotto (16-94-94)
Last Fight: 12/3/2011- RTD10 #20 Antonio Margarito
Next Fight: 5/5/2012- vs. WW #1 Floyd Mayweather, Jr.
After being heavily rumored for a unnecessary rematch with Pacquiao, Cotto has gone the other way, fighting Floyd at 154 instead.
5) Erislandy Lara (16-37-59)
Last Fight: 7/9/2011- L*(MD12) vs. #6 Paul Williams
Next Fight: 4/20/2012- vs. Ronald Hearns (UNR)
The Hearns fight has been rescehduled for April 20.
6) Carlos Molina (37-37-52)
Last Fight: 7/9/2011- UD10 #7 Kermit Cintron
Next Fight: 3/24/2012- vs. #3 James Kirkland
See Kirkland’s notes, above.
7) Paul Williams (5-5-59)
Last Fight: 2/18/2012- UD12 #17 MW Nobuhiro Ishida
Next Fight: Unknown
After Williams beat Ishida, he said he does not want a Lara rematch, but instead wants one with Sergio.
8) Alfredo Angulo (5-130-130)
Last Fight: 11/5/2011- L (TKO6) vs. James Kirkland (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Angulo had no shortage of guts, but appeared a bit physically overmatched against a beastly incarnation of Kirkland.
9) Ryan Rhodes (5-126-126)
Last Fight: 11/26/2011- W (PTS8) vs. Sergei Khomitski (UNR) (at MW)
Next Fight: Unknown
Rhodes pulled out of his fight with Rabchenko, citing a back injury.
10) Gabriel Rosado (5-9-59)
Last Fight: 1/21/2012- TKO5 Jesus Soto Karass (UNR)
Next Fight: 6/1/2013- vs. Joel Julio (UNR)
Rosado will again fight on NBC Sports Network, fighting fringe contender Joel Julio in Bethlehem, PA.
11) Cory Spinks (5-8)
Last Fight: 1/28/2012- UD12 #11 Sechew Powell
Next Fight: Unknown
I cannot confirm that the close unanimous decision verdict over Powell was accurate due to lack of video.  So whether for skill or lack of sunlight, Spinks is very much back in the mix.
12) Austin Trout (5-59)
Last Fight: 11/11/2011- TKO6 Frank LoPorto (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Trout wants Cotto, Rodriguez, Mundine, and Kirkland, and also has apparently mutual interest in fighting Lara.  A purse bid has been scheduled on 3/29 for the Mundine fight.
13) Delvin Rodriguez (5-36)
Last Fight: 12/3/2011- UD10* #9 Pawel Wolak
Next Fight: Unknown
Rodriguez has confirmed that he’ll be staying at 154.
14) Brian Rose (15-16)
Last Fight: 12/3/2011- W (SD12) vs. #8 Prince Arron
Next Fight: 3/31/2012- vs. Max Maxwell (UNR)
Rose’s first defense of his British title will come in his hometown of Blackpool  against Max Maxwell.  Maxwell is a very mediocre journeyman who just so happens to be the only man to ever beat Rose.
15) Vanes Martirosyan (15-42)
Last Fight: 2/4/2012- TKO3 Troy Lowry (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
We get it, Vanes!  You’re better than a bunch of random journeymen.  How about a test?
16) Lukas Konecny (1-32)
Last Fight: 5/27/2011- UD12 Hussein Bayram (UNR)
Next Fight: 4/5/2012- vs. Salim Larbi (UNR)
After Baysangurov withdrew with injury, Konecny will go home to the Czech Republic to fight French journeyman Salim Larbi for what is incredibly an interim alphabet title.
17) Sechew Powell (1-105)
Last Fight: 1/28/2012- L(UD12) vs. Cory Spinks (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
18) Antonio Margarito (1-19)
Last Fight: 12/3/2011- L (RTD10) vs. #5 Miguel Cotto
Next Fight: Unknown
There is talk floating that Margarito might move up to fight Julio Cesar Chavez, Jr. in June, but the WBC has gone on record saying they would reject that fight for Chavez’ belt.
19) Prince Arron (1-4)
Last Fight: 12/3/2011- L (SD12) vs. Brian Rose (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
When we last saw Arron in the rankings, it appeared that he was going to fight an 8 rounder on February 24.  That didn’t happen.  No word on his next move.
20) Anthony Mundine (1-1)
Last Fight: 10/19/2011- UD12* Rigoberto Alvarez (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
A purse bid for a proposed fight with Austin Trout is scheduled for 3/29.

The Week Ahead:  Friday: Gatekeepers Antwone Smith and Roberto Garcia square off in Pharr, Texas on Friday Night Fights.

Saturday: In Houston, Texas on HBO, a huge fight will go down between #3 James Kirkland and #6 Carlos Molina.  The fight may be determined by which Kirkland shows up.  The version that showed up for the Angulo fight under current trainer Ann Wolfe may be too strong for a supremely crafty but smaller and less physical Molina.  If the passive, mentally weak one that was stopped by Ishida turns up (or anything close to that), he’s got no chance.

In other Saturday action, Belorussian undefeated prospect Sergei Rabchenko fights low-level German journeyman Ronny Gabel in Sheffield, England.  The fight was originally going to pit Rabchenko against Ryan Rhodes, who withdrew due to injury.

Finally, gatekeepers Grady Brewer of Oklahoma and Frank Haroche Horta of France square off in Macon, Georgia.

In maybe a bit of a minor upset, inactive fringe contender Cory Spinks suddenly became a resurgent contender by nicking a close but unanimous decision over #11 Sechew Powell on Saturday in Springfield, Missouri.  Powell claims home cooking (the fight was 3 hours from Spinks’ hometown of St. Louis), saying all of the judges should have scored it 116-112 in his favor.  Unfortunately the fight was not on TV, and not even the most amateur of videos seems to exist anywhere.  This is one of the most significant fights in my memory to be so totally devoid of video.  I could have gone and watched the fight, and in fact intended to, but was unable to get off work.  Anyway, in the absence of any reliable evidence to the contrary, I have no choice but to accept it as a close victory for Spinks.

In the division’s only other notable fight, gatekeeper Grady Brewer managed to win a decision over lower mid-level Brazilian journeyman Edvan Dos Santos in Oklahoma City, but only won by a unanimous margin of 6 rounds to 2- not what you’d like to see from a guy trying to rebuild at a late stage of his career when fighting against that level of competition.

Spinks win takes him from the brink of obscurity to the #10 spot in one fell swoop.  Powell slides all the way back to #18 with the loss.  This illustrates why I like to see all fights that might affect my rankings.  Whether right or wrong, the judges have brought one man back from the dead and badly damaged the career of another- all with no public oversight.  If I’m ever able to locate a video, I will obviously watch the hell out of it.

In the reshuffling, Austin Trout is forced out of the top 10 after an 8-week stint, and Prince Arron is bounced from the rankings after returning for 7 weeks.

Last Fight: 1/28/2012- UD12 #11 Sechew Powell

Junior Middleweight: 2012, Jan 23-29

#11 Gabriel Rosado put on a hell of a performance in Philadelphia in the co-feature for  the debut of NBC Sports Network’s new “Fight Night” series.  He was fast, powerful, and sharp in general.  Jesus Soto Karass was game and tough as always, but he was badly outgunned, and was stopped in the 5th after a thorough beating in that round and the one before.  I don’t believe it’s possible to look any better over 5 rounds against good competition than Rosado did.

Rosado’s big win- maybe only the 3rd best of his career in terms of level of opposition- bumps him up 2 spots to #9.  He fails to eclipse Ryan Rhodes in a close call because of the fact that Rhodes has beaten a top 10 contender and Rosado has not, as well as the fact that Rosado lost t a low-level opponent in Joshua Onyango nearly 5 years ago.  Austin Trout is forced to #10, while Sechew Powell drops to #11 after 7 weeks in the top 10.

Michael Medina pulled off a reasonably significant upset in Oklahoma City on Thursday, winning a clear decision over apparently fast-slipping gatekeeper Grady Brewer, who has now had two awful performances in a row after destroying top prospect Fernando Guerrero in June.  Medina had failed at his three previous attempts at beating top-50 opposition, dropping a decision in 2008 to a young Vanes Martirosyan, losing a split decision to John Duddy at middleweight in 2010, and getting stopped earlier this year by Saul Roman, also at middleweight.  This performance instantly turns him from a journeyman to a top 25 fringe contender, give or take.  He would have earned a ranking if Brewer had not already shown his age against Demetrius Andrade.  No changes.
