Junior Middleweight: 2013, Jun 24-30

On the Showtime Extreme-televised Malignaggi-Broner undercard from Brooklyn, undefeated prospect Julian Williams got what should have been a significant win over gatekeeper Joachim Alcine, but came in at 155 and thus still lacks a qualifying win to get him rankings consideration at 154.  It was a lot more difficult a fight than it appeared to be early on.  Alcine was legally dropped 3 times in the first five rounds, and was nearly knocked out by a blatantly late shot during that span, as well.  Referee Steve Willis didn’t even so much as take a point for what was dangerously close to being a legitimately disqualifiable moment.  Despite this adversity, Alcine came on strong in the latter stages of the contest, winning the last 3 of the scheduled 8 on my card- certainly round 8 at the very least.  But it was much too little, much too late.  Williams walked away with a unanimous 77-72 margin, which was exactly how I saw it, as well.  Even John McKaie- who I often criticize- got this one exactly right.

One-loss Mexican prospect Jorge Cota got a 4th round knockout over totally untested 4-0 prospect Humberto Flores in Ixtapa, Mexico the same night.  In addition to being inexperienced, Flores took the fight on apparently less than a week’s notice and is probably a natural welterweight at the absolute most.

No changes this week.

Dan’s Top 20 (Weeks in Current Position-Weeks in Top 10 if applicable-Weeks in Top 20)
Champ: None
1) Carlos Molina (21-103-118)
Last Fight: 2/1/2013- UD12 #11 Cory Spinks
Next Fight: 7/19/2013- vs. #5 Ishe Smith
After a couple months of speculation and assurances, Molina-Smith is now officially on for July 19 in Vegas.
2) Saul Alvarez (21-121-136)
Last Fight: 4/20/2013- W* (UD12) vs. #3 Austin Trout
Next Fight: 9/14/2013- vs. #1 WW Floyd Mayweather, Jr.
Floyd-Canelo on September 14 appeared to be made way back in February, but then appeared to be a distant memory for months.  Now it’s back on, for the exact same date.  The only difference is that Floyd got dropped for inactivity because the fight wasn’t signed when his 1-year anniversary at 154 came around.  There will be a 152-pound catchweight.
3) Austin Trout (18-56-125)
Last Fight: 4/20/2013- L* (UD12) vs. #2 Saul Alvarez
Next Fight: Unknown
Trout wants a rematch of his very dubious loss to Alvarez.  He certainly deserves it.  He’ll have to wait until 2014 at the earliest, though, as Canelo is fighting Mayweather.
4) Erislandy Lara (18-103-125)
Last Fight: 6/8/2013- TKO10 #8 Alfredo Angulo
Next Fight: Unknown
5) Ishe Smith (18-18-18)
Last Fight: 2/23/2013- W (MD12) vs. #3 Cornelius Bundrage
Next Fight: Unknown
See Molina’s notes, above.
6) Miguel Cotto (8-160-160)
Last Fight: 12/1/2012- L (UD12) vs. #8 Austin Trout
Next Fight: Unknown
Cotto appears very likely to fight K9 Bundrage on September 28.
7) Cornelius Bundrage (8-151-151)
Last Fight: 2/23/2013- L (MD12) vs. Ishe Smith (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
See Cotto’s notes, above.
8) Alfredo Angulo (8-196-196)
Last Fight: 6/8/2013- L (TKO10) vs. #4 Erislandy Lara
Next Fight: Unknown
Angulo has shared the good news that there are no broken bones in his face after the devastating Lara combination that forced him to submit.  On one hand, it demystifies Angulo’s warrior image, but it does give him a better outlook for his career going forward, as well.
9) Gabriel Rosado (8-14-125)
Last Fight: 5/4/2013- NC vs. J’Leon Love (UNR) (at MW)
Next Fight: Unknown
With his already-questionable loss to Love overturned due to a positive drug test, Rosado now wants Cotto, Lara, or Trout.
10) Sergey Rabchenko (8-8-54)
Last Fight: 3/30/2013- KO2 Adriano Nicchi (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Rabchenko has been ordered to fight new EBU mandatory challenger Ruben Varon after it appears Emanuele Della Rosa didn’t want the fight too badly.  The delay involved has moved the purse bid to July 2, making it fairly unlikely that Rabchenko will be featured on the big card in Monte Carlo 9 days later, as originally planned.
11) Delvin Rodriguez (8-102)
Last Fight: 5/24/2013- TKO8 Freddy Hernandez (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Rodriguez got a cuts stoppage over a guy that was beating him, but the judges had his back in case he needed their help.
12) Lukas Konecny (8-98)
Last Fight: 3/23/2013- W (TD12) vs. Karim Achour (UNR) (at MW)
Next Fight: 7/13/2013- vs. Moez Fhima (UNR) (at MW)
Konecny is set to fight Tunisian high-level journeyman and/or fringe prospect Moez Fhima for an alphabet regional middleweight belt on July 13.  Despite his apparent move up in weight, I’ll keep him ranked here until the anniversary of his last fight at 154 (October 6) or until he schedules an obviously middleweight fight for after that date.
13) Keith Thurman (8-31)
Last Fight: 3/9/2013- UD12 #? WW Jan Zaveck (at WW)
Next Fight: 7/27/2013- vs. Diego Chaves (UNR) (at WW)
Thurman will be back on July 27 against undefeated Argentine prospect Diego Chaves, again at Welterweight.  The fight will be in San Antonio.
14) Vanes Martirosyan (8-108)
Last Fight: 6/15/2013- TKO2 Ryan Davis (UNR) (at MW)
Next Fight: Unknown
It appears likely that Martirosyan will fight Demetrius Andrade for a vacant belt sometime before the end of the year.
15) Yuri Foreman (8-22)
Last Fight: 4/6/2013- UD6 Gundrick King (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Foreman is keeping his comeback at a very low level for the time being.
16) Willie Nelson (4-17)
Last Fight: 3/1/2013- TKO1 Michael Medina (UNR)
Next Fight: 6/29/2013- vs. Luciano Cuello (UNR)
Nelson finally has an opponent for 6/29- decent Argentine journeyman Luciano Cuello.
17) Brian Rose (4-14)
Last Fight: 4/20/2013- TKO12 Joachim Alcine (UNR)
Next Fight: 6/29/2013- vs. Alexey Ribchev (UNR)
Rose stays busy against Bulgarian journeyman Alexey Ribchev on June 29.
18) Jermell Charlo (3-3)
Last Fight: 6/8/2013- UD12 Demetrius Hopkins (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Charlo didn’t exactly build his fan base with the Hopkins snoozer, but he satisfied the “win today, look good tomorrow” equation, and earned a ranking for his trouble.
19) Guido Pitto (3-9)
Last Fight: 4/27/2013- W* (SD12) vs. Jack Culcay (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
It took an “upset” over highly-touted prospect Culcay for Pitto to get the recognition he earned but was denied against Veron.
20) Jack Culcay (3-8)
Last Fight: 4/27/2013- L* (SD12) vs. Guido Pitto (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Most see Culcay’s squeaker of a loss to Pitto to be a major setback in his career.  Not I.  First, he barely lost it, if at all.  Second, he held his own with a true and more proven fringe contender, who was underrated due to a robbery.

The Week Ahead:  Friday in Liverpool, undefeated local prospect Liam Smith takes on an opponent to be determined.

Hours later on the Friday Night Fights undercard in Jacksonville, Florida, undefeated Brazilian Patrick Teixeira battles mid-level journeyman/fringe prospect Marcus Willis of Fort Myers.

Saturday kicks off with recently-vacated British titlist #17 Brian Rose, who mixes it up with Bulgarian journeyman Alexey Ribchev in Bolton, England.  This fight might be at 160, since Ribchev hasn’t fought anywhere near 154 since 2010.

Opening up the HBO-televised portion of the Golovkin-Macklin undercard in Connecticut, #16 Willie Nelson meets 2-loss Argentine prospect Luciano Cuello.  Cuello lacks any really good wins, but his only losses came against Canelo and JCC, Jr..  Granted, this was a pre-Freddie Roach version of Chavez who was not nearly as skilled or strong as we find him today, but to Cuello’s credit the fight was close on the cards.  Chavez was known to get a large benefit of the doubt in those days, so I wouldn’t even rule out the possibility that he got the better of it.

#14 Vanes Martirosyan stopped low-level journeyman Ryan Davis in Dallas on Saturday, needing less than 2 rounds to accomplish the task.  Vanes didn’t quite make 154 for the fight, but he came close enough to buy himself until May of 2014 to schedule one without risking his ranking.  No changes this week.

9) Gabriel Rosado (7-13-124)
Last Fight: 5/4/2013- L* (SD10) vs. J’Leon Love (UNR) (at MW)
Next Fight: Unknown
Apparently satisfied that his arguable loss to J’Leon Love will soon be changed to a no contest due to a positive drug test, Rosado now wants Cotto, Lara, or Trout.
10) Sergey Rabchenko (7-7-53)
Last Fight: 3/30/2013- KO2 Adriano Nicchi (UNR)

Rose stays busy against Bulgarian journeyman Alexey Ribchev on June 29.
18) Jermell Charlo (2-2)
Last Fight: 6/8/2013- UD12 Demetrius Hopkins (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Charlo didn’t exactly build his fan base with the Hopkins snoozer, but he satisfied the “win today, look good tomorrow” equation, and earned a ranking for his trouble.
19) Guido Pitto (2-8)
Last Fight: 4/27/2013- W* (SD12) vs. Jack Culcay (UNR)

Last Fight: 4/27/2013- L* (SD12) vs. Guido Pitto (UNR)

Most see Culcay’s squeaker of a loss to Pitto to be a major setback in his career.  Not I.  First, he barely lost it, if at all.  Second, he held his own with a true and more proven fringe contender, who was underrated due to a robbery.

The Week Ahead:  One-loss Mexican prospect Jorge Cota stays busy with an opponent to be announced on Saturday in Ixtapa, Mexico.

On the Showtime Extreme undercard for Malignaggi-Broner in Brooklyn, gatekeeper Joachim Alcine looks to spoil the rise of undefeated Philly prospect Julian Williams.

Junior Middleweight: 2011, Nov 21-27

Posted in Junior Middleweight, Rankings with tags , , , , , , , on February 9, 2013 by danboxing
On Friday, veteran journeyman Charles Whitaker won a reasonably comfortable 12 round decision over gatekeeper Giorbis Barthelemy in Miami, with scores of 117-111 (x2) and 116-112.  At nearly 38, and with 52 fights under his belt, Whitaker scored the best win of his career and has positioned himself for a possible alphabet title shot.

Saturday in his hometown of Los Mochis, Mexico, undefeated prospect Jorge Cota (who had literally fought nobody in his 10 wins) took a ridiculously huge step up against 115-fight veteran and current gatekeeper Yori Boy Campas.  He proved to be up to the challenge, stopping Campas late in the 8th round despite Campas’ having come in 1.5 pounds over the divisional limit.

On the same card, gatekeeper Antwone Smith cruised to an 8-round decision win over weak journeyman Yoryi Estrella.

Cota and Whitaker’s wins both make them relevant in the division, but neither victory by itself is at a top 20 level.  No changes.

Last Fight: 9/17/2011- TKO6 Alfonso Gomez (UNR)

2) Cornelius Bundrage (23-68-68)
Last Fight: 6/25/2011- UD12 #11 Sechew Powell

3) James Kirkland (3-3-3)
Last Fight: 11/5/2011- TKO6 #4 Alfredo Angulo

In the immediate aftermath of his huge upset win over Angulo, Bundrage, Lara, and Ishida have both expressed interest in fighting him, but Kirkland appears to want Carlos Molina.
4) Erislandy Lara (3-20-42)
Last Fight: 7/9/2011- L*(MD12) vs. #6 Paul Williams
Next Fight: Unknown
With most of the big names at 154 apparently not all that excited about fighting him, Lara recently challenged Dmitry Pirog at middleweight.  He’s also interested in Austin Trout and James Kirkland.
5) Miguel Cotto (20-77-77)
Last Fight: 3/12/2011- TKO12 Ricardo Mayorga (UNR)
Next Fight: 12/3/2011- vs. #20 Antonio Margarito

Next Fight: 12/3/2011- vs. Brian Rose (UNR)

12) Sechew Powell (3-88)
Last Fight: 6/25/2011- L(UD12) vs. #3 Cornelius Bundrage
Next Fight: Unknown Date- vs. Cory Spinks (UNR)
After Latimore turned down an eliminator for a Bundrage shot, Powell will instead be taking on Cory Spinks for that honor, it would appear.  The fight was originally rumored for Mares-Agbeko, but looks likely for the Erdei-Cloud New Year’s Eve card, instead.
13) Gabriel Rosado (3-42)
Last Fight: 9/9/2011- UD10 Keenan Collins (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Rosado had little trouble with the low-level challenge of Collins.
14) Delvin Rodriguez (3-19)

Next Fight: 12/3/2011- vs. #9 Pawel Wolak
See Wolak’s notes, above.
15) Paul Williams (2-42)
Last Fight: 7/9/2011- W*(MD12) vs. #17 Erislandy Lara (Robbery)
Next Fight: Unknown
Williams’ promoter wants to see him fight an orthodox fighter next, but it’s increasingly likely that won’t be until 2012.
16) Vanes Martirosyan (2-25)
Last Fight: 10/29/2011- UD10 Richard Gutierrez (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Martirosyan could have made a major career move by fighting Angulo this week, but instead opted to tread water against Gutierrez.

Next Fight: 12/3/2011- vs. #5 Miguel Cotto
Big-time rematch with Cotto on the horizon.

The Week Ahead: In the week’s biggest fight at 154, #1 Saul Alvarez takes on nosediving fringe contender Kermit Cintron in Mexico City.

A ways South in Buenos Aires, 2-loss Argentine prospect Javier Maciel (best known for troubling Dmitry Pirog at middleweight earlier this year) takes on low-level Uruguayan journeyman Nestor Faccio.

#10 Ryan Rhodes will be in action this weekend against good journeyman Sergei Khomitski, but that fight is expected to be contested at Middleweight.
