Junior Middleweight: 2013, Sep 30- Oct 6

Posted in Junior Middleweight, Rankings with tags , , , , , , , on October 15, 2013 by danboxing
#16 Willie Nelson’s scheduled fight with Dante Moore was indeed cancelled, possibly over the Ohio commission’s concerns regarding its competitiveness.

Two-loss Mexican prospect Daniel Sandoval solidly outpointed veteran Colombian journeyman Richard Gutierrez in an 8-rounder on the Chavez-Vera undercard in Carson, California on Saturday.

In the week’s most significant action, undefeated New Jersey prospect Glen Tapia stopped borderline top-50 gatekeeper Elco Garcia in 5 for what might be his best career win.  He’s not eligbile for rankings consideration, however, as the fight was apparently contested at roughly a 156 pound catchweight.  It might bolster his case later, however, if he does achieve a good win at 154 in the future.

No changes.

Dan’s Top 20 (Weeks in Current Position-Weeks in Top 10 if applicable-Weeks in Top 20)
Champ: None
1) Carlos Molina (35-117-132)
Last Fight: 9/14/2013- W (SD12) vs. #5 Ishe Smith
Next Fight: Unknown
Molina’s team wants to match him against Canelo, a proposition that Mayweather himself blessed in the aftermath of his own fight with Alvarez.  He also has an eye on Cotto, and has drawn interest from Angulo, as well.
2) Floyd Mayweather, Jr. (3-3-3)
Last Fight: 9/14/2013- W* (MD12) vs. #2 Saul Alvarez
Next Fight: Unknown
Mayweather intends to fight twice in 2014: on May 3 and September 13, if all goes to plan.  Danny Garcia and a potential Alexander-Khan winner seem like possibilities.  Bernard Hopkins pledges to make 160 for May 3 if Floyd is interested, as well.
3) Saul Alvarez (3-135-150)
Last Fight: 9/14/2013- L* (MD12) vs. WW Champion Floyd Mayweather, Jr.
Next Fight: Unknown
See Molina’s notes, above.
4) Austin Trout (3-70-139)
Last Fight: 4/20/2013- L* (UD12) vs. #2 Saul Alvarez
Next Fight: Unknown
Trout is suing his former promoter over allegations that the promoter threatened to sue Showtime if they put his ex-fighter on the Mayweather-Canelo undercard, something he had no authority to do since their contract had already expired.
5) Erislandy Lara (3-117-139)
Last Fight: 6/8/2013- TKO10 #8 Alfredo Angulo
Next Fight: Unknown
Lara says he must beat guys like Canelo, Molina, or Trout before deserving a Mayweather shot.
6) Ishe Smith (3-32-32)
Last Fight: 9/14/2013- L (SD12) vs. #1 Carlos Molina
Next Fight: Unknown
No word on Ishe’s next move after losing his alphabet belt in a close fight.
7) Miguel Cotto (3-174-174)
Last Fight: 12/1/2012- L (UD12) vs. #8 Austin Trout
Next Fight: 10/5/2013- vs. #11 Delvin Rodriguez
After a proposed fight with Bundrage was scrapped by the networks, and a brief flirtation with Carlos Molina, Cotto will now be fighting Delvin Rodriguez on HBO on October 5.
8) Cornelius Bundrage (3-165-165)
Last Fight: 2/23/2013- L (MD12) vs. Ishe Smith (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Bundrage might be fighting a re-match with gatekeeper Zaurbek Baysangurov on November 9 in Russia.
9) Alfredo Angulo (3-210-210)
Last Fight: 6/8/2013- L (TKO10) vs. #4 Erislandy Lara
Next Fight: Unknown
Angulo has been in a war of words with his last opponent, Lara, that may or may not lead anywhere, and would like to fight Carlos Molina.  He expects to be back in December.
10) Sergey Rabchenko (22-22-68)

Last Fight: 7/16/2013- TKO3 Gari Abajian (UNR)
Next Fight: 11/16/2013- vs. Cedric Vitu (UNR)
Rabchenko is already in camp for his re-match with Cedric Vitu, with the fight set for November in Bulgaria.
11) Delvin Rodriguez (22-116)
Last Fight: 5/24/2013- TKO8 Freddy Hernandez (UNR)
Next Fight: 10/5/2013- vs. #7 Miguel Cotto
See Cotto’s notes, above.
12) Lukas Konecny (22-112)
Last Fight: 7/13/2013- UD12 Moez Fhima (UNR) (at MW)
Next Fight: Unknown
This is Konecny’s last week as a ranked junior middleweight unless he schedules something that looks like a fight at this weight by the start of next week.
13) Keith Thurman (22-45)
Last Fight: 7/27/2013- KO10 Diego Chaves (UNR) (at WW)
Next Fight: Unknown
Thurman expects to fight Jesus Soto Karass next.
14) Vanes Martirosyan (22-122)
Last Fight: 6/15/2013- TKO2 Ryan Davis (UNR) (at MW)
Next Fight: 11/9/2013- vs. Demetrius Andrade (UNR)
Martirosyan-Andrade has been moved up a week to November 9.
15) Yuri Foreman (22-36)
Last Fight: 7/24/2013- UD8 Jamaal Davis (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Foreman is very slowly stepping up his level of opposition as his comeback gradually picks up steam.
16) Willie Nelson (18-31)
Last Fight: 6/29/2013- UD10 Luciano Cuello (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Nelson’s stay-busy fight with Dante Moore was cancelled on short notice, but he appears poised to move up to 160 to fight proven contender Matthew Macklin at that weight, likely in December.
17) Brian Rose (18-28)
Last Fight: 6/29/2013- W (PTS10) vs. Alexey Ribchev (UNR) (at MW)
Next Fight: 10/26/2013- vs. Javier Maciel (UNR)
Rose will be back on the Brook-Senchenko undercard in Sheffield, and will be fighting Argentine prospect Javier Maciel- certainly his toughest opponent since capturing the British title.
18) Jermell Charlo (17-17)
Last Fight: 6/8/2013- UD12 Demetrius Hopkins (UNR)
Next Fight: 10/14/2013- vs. Jose Angel Rodriguez (UNR)
Charlo will headline a Fox Sports 1 card on October 14 against mid-range journeyman Jose Angel Rodriguez.
19) Guido Pitto (17-23)
Last Fight: 4/27/2013- W* (SD12) vs. Jack Culcay (UNR)
Next Fight: 10/26/2013- vs. Jack Culcay (UNR)
A Culcay-Pitto rematch was postponed due to headliner Marco Huck’s elbow injury, and will now happen on October 26 in Oldenburg.
20) Kell Brook (12-12)
Last Fight: 7/13/2013- TKO8 Carson Jones (UNR)
Next Fight: 10/26/2013- vs. Vyacheslav Senchenko (UNR) (at WW)
Brook gets Senchenko in late October in Sheffield.  Since it’s a non-title fight, there’s always the chance it could creep up over 147 and thus affect his ranking here.

The Week Ahead:  The most important fight by a mile at 154 this week is #7 Miguel Cotto’s battle with #11 Delvin Rodriguez, which will be from Orlando, Florida and televised domestically by HBO.

Earlier in the night, precocious 6-0 Nigerian Larry Ekundayo is scheduled to fight journeyman Glenn Foot in London, though it’s a bit unclear whether it will be at 154 or 147.

The prior night in Ghent, Belgium, local hero Sasha Yengoyan battles French gatekeeper Frank Haroche Horta in a very tightly-matched contest.

Junior Middleweight: 2013, May 20-26

Posted in Junior Middleweight, Rankings with tags , , , , , , , on June 21, 2013 by danboxing
Both of the favorites on Saturday came out on top.  In London, undefeated prospect Larry Ekundayo moved to 6-0 against more experienced yet less advanced French prospect Howard Cospolite, winning all but one round in the opinion of the referee and sole judge.

Across the pond in Atlantic City, undefeated prospect Shawn Porter looked pretty spectacular against the slow but durable Phil Lo Greco.  His speed, quickness, and footwork are all clearly top-notch.  I gave him every round, plus knockdowns he scored in rounds 8 and 10.  Lo Greco may have nicked round 3, but that’s splitting hairs.

No changes.

Dan’s Top 20 (Weeks in Current Position-Weeks in Top 10 if applicable-Weeks in Top 20)
Champ: None
1) Carlos Molina (16-98-113)
Last Fight: 2/1/2013- UD12 #11 Cory Spinks
Next Fight: Unknown
Ishe Smith says he plans to offer Molina a shot at his alphabet belt, and has since reported that the fight is almost signed.
2) Saul Alvarez (16-116-131)
Last Fight: 4/20/2013- W* (UD12) vs. #3 Austin Trout
Next Fight: Unknown
Canelo wants Floyd next.  That fight had already appeared set for September up until a few weeks before he fought Trout.  Floyd says he wants the fight at 147, which might be a big ask of Alvarez at this point.
3) Austin Trout (13-51-120)
Last Fight: 4/20/2013- L* (UD12) vs. #2 Saul Alvarez
Next Fight: Unknown
Trout wants a rematch of his very dubious loss to Alvarez.  He certainly deserves it.
4) Erislandy Lara (13-98-120)
Last Fight: 11/10/2012- D* (TD9) vs. #15 Vanes Martirosyan (robbery- should be win)
Next Fight: 6/8/2013- vs. #8 Alfredo Angulo
Lara will fight Angulo on Showtime, June 8 in Carson, California.
5) Ishe Smith (13-13-13)
Last Fight: 2/23/2013- W (MD12) vs. #3 Cornelius Bundrage
Next Fight: Unknown
See Molina’s notes, above.
6) Miguel Cotto (3-155-155)
Last Fight: 12/1/2012- L (UD12) vs. #8 Austin Trout
Next Fight: Unknown
Cotto has laid out the plans for the rest of his career.  He says he’ll fight in October or November, twice in 2014, and then retire.
7) Cornelius Bundrage (3-146-146)
Last Fight: 2/23/2013- L (MD12) vs. Ishe Smith (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Bundrage should probably retire after how awful he looked against Smith.
8) Alfredo Angulo (3-191-191)
Last Fight: 12/15/2012- UD10 Jorge Silva (UNR)
Next Fight: 6/8/2013- vs. #4 Erislandy Lara
After it looked for awhile that he might fight Rosado next, Angulo will instead battle #4 Lara in Carson, California in early June.
9) Gabriel Rosado (3-9-120)
Last Fight: 5/4/2013- L* (SD10) vs. J’Leon Love (UNR) (at MW)
Next Fight: Unknown
In addition to the fight result barely being credible to begin with, it turns out Love was on a banned diuretic that helped him make weight at 160 (which he managed to do only by the skin of his teeth).  Most likely this will end up as a no-contest, thus adding even more reasons for me to not hold it against Rosado’s ranking at 154.
10) Sergey Rabchenko (3-3-49)
Last Fight: 3/30/2013- KO2 Adriano Nicchi (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Rabchenko might be fighting Italian prospect Emanuele Della Rosa on July 13 in Monaco.
11) Delvin Rodriguez (3-97)
Last Fight: 2/15/2013- TKO6 George Tahdooahnippah (UNR) (at MW)
Next Fight: 5/24/2013- vs. Freddy Hernandez (UNR)
Rodriguez will fight gatekeeper Freddy Hernandez on May 24, on Friday Night Fights.
12) Lukas Konecny (3-93)
Last Fight: 3/23/2013- W (TD12) vs. Karim Achour (UNR) (at MW)
Next Fight: Unknown
13) Keith Thurman (3-26)
Last Fight: 3/9/2013- UD12 #? WW Jan Zaveck (at WW)
Next Fight: Unknown Date- vs. Diego Chaves (UNR) (at WW)
Thurman will be back on either July 20 or 27 against undefeated Argentine prospect Diego Chaves, again at Welterweight.
14) Vanes Martirosyan (3-103)
Last Fight: 11/10/2012- D* (TD9) vs. #6 Erislandy Lara (robbery- should be L)
Next Fight: Unknown
Martirosyan was set to fight Javier Maciel on April 6 in China, but broke his thumb.
15) Yuri Foreman (3-17)
Last Fight: 4/6/2013- UD6 Gundrick King (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Foreman is keeping his comeback at a very low level for the time being.
16) Sechew Powell (3-166)
Last Fight: 6/1/2012- L (TKO9) vs. #10 Gabriel Rosado
Next Fight: Unknown
17) Willie Nelson (3-12)
Last Fight: 3/1/2013- TKO1 Michael Medina (UNR)
Next Fight: 6/29/2013- vs. Unknown Opponent
Nelson is set to return on the Golovkin-Macklin undercard on June 29, but no opponent yet.  He was rumored to fight Joshua Clottey, but those rumors appear false.
18) Brian Rose (3-9)
Last Fight: 4/20/2013- TKO12 Joachim Alcine (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Rose has officially vacated his British title.
19) Guido Pitto (3-4)
Last Fight: 4/27/2013- W* (SD12) vs. Jack Culcay (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
It took an “upset” over highly-touted prospect Culcay for Pitto to get the recognition he earned but was denied against Veron.
20) Jack Culcay (3-3)
Last Fight: 4/27/2013- L* (SD12) vs. Guido Pitto (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Most see Culcay’s squeaker of a loss to Pitto to be a major setback in his career.  Not I.  First, he barely lost it, if at all.  Second, he held his own with a true and more proven fringe contender, who was underrated due to a robbery.

The Week Ahead:  #11 Delvin Rodriguez returns on Friday Night Fights this week, taking on gatekeeper Freddy Hernandez in Uncasville, Connecticut.

Last Fight: 5/4/2013- L* (SD10) vs. J’Leon Love (UNR) (at MW)

Rosado says he’s up for a rematch with Love.  It’s certainly warranted, though I had Rosado comfortably ahead the first time.
10) Sergey Rabchenko (2-2-48)
Last Fight: 3/30/2013- KO2 Adriano Nicchi (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Rabchenko might be fighting Italian prospect Emanuele Della Rosa on July 13 in Monaco.

20) Jack Culcay (2-2)
Last Fight: 4/27/2013- L* (SD12) vs. Guido Pitto (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Most see Culcay’s squeaker of a loss to Pitto to be a major setback in his career.  Not I.  First, he barely lost it, if at all.  Second, he held his own with a true and more proven fringe contender, who was underrated due to a robbery.

The Week Ahead:  Saturday in London, Nigerian-born local resident Larry Ekundayo- a 6-0 prospect that has already beaten the likes of Craig McEwan and Kris Carslaw and won Prizefighter- takes on much less-proven 8-1-1 French prospect Howard Cospolite.

Later that night in Atlantic City, it’s a battle of undefeated (welterweight) prospects as Shawn Porter meets Phil Lo Greco at a 150 pound contract weight.  Lo Greco is not advanced enough to help Porter toward any kind of a ranking.  Lo Greco, if successful, could really make some hay, though.
