Super Middleweight: 2013, Feb 25- Mar 3

Posted in Rankings, Super Middleweight with tags , , , , , , , on March 2, 2013 by danboxing
Last week’s #18 Jesus Gonzales has not fought in more than a year, and seemingly has no fight scheduled now that his oft-delayed date with Albert Onolunose has apparently been nixed permanently.  Accordingly, he is removed for inactivity.  #19 Maxim Vlasov and #20 Edwin Rodriguez each see an uptick in their rankings due to the change, and Dyah Davis returns to the ranks for the first time in a bit over a year, narrowly beating out Hadillah Mohoumadi and Glen Johnson for the honor.

Dan’s Top 20
Champ: Andre Ward (63-197-197)
Last Fight: 9/8/2012- TKO10 LHW Champ Chad Dawson
Next Fight: Unknown
Ward’s done with surgery, and is likely out until at least the Summer.
1) Carl Froch (40-350-350)
Last Fight: 11/17/2012- KO3 LHW #11 Yusaf Mack
Next Fight: 5/25/2013- vs. #3 Mikkel Kessler
The deal is done.  Froch will get a rematch with Kessler on May 25 in London.
2) Arthur Abraham (11-175-175)
Last Fight: 12/15/2012- TKO8 Mehdi Bouadla (UNR)
Next Fight: 3/23/2013- vs. #5 Robert Stieglitz
Abraham will rematch Stieglitz on March 23 in Stieglitz’s hometown of Magdeburg.
3) Mikkel Kessler (11-429-429)
Last Fight: 12/8/2012- TKO3 Brian Magee (UNR)
Next Fight: 5/25/2013- vs. #1 Carl Froch
See Froch’s notes, above.
4) Lucian Bute (27-359-359)
Last Fight: 11/3/2012- UD12 LHW #16 Denis Grachev (at LHW)
Next Fight: 5/25/2013- vs. Unknown Opponent
Bute appeared to be in line for Bika, and that may still be so, but apparently he has already agreed to fight Jean Pascal.  Both men have good opportunities in front of them already, so we’ll see if this fight will get in the way.
5) Robert Stieglitz (27-183-183)
Last Fight: 8/25/2012- L(UD12) vs. #6 Arthur Abraham
Next Fight: 3/23/2013- #2 Arthur Abraham
See Abraham’s notes, above.
6) Thomas Oosthuizen (27-91-139)
Last Fight: 11/10/2012- UD12 Fulgencio Zuniga (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Oosthuizen was supposed to be fighting this weekend, but no opponent was ever named, and the fight seems to have quietly vacated the schedule.
7) Adonis Stevenson (20-64-64)
Last Fight: 10/12/2012- TKO12 Don George (UNR)
Next Fight: 3/22/2013- vs. Darnell Boone (UNR)
With his hopes of fighting Carl Froch dashed for the moment, Stevenson will tend to some unfinished business when he tries to avenge his 2010 stoppage loss to Darnell Boone on March 22 in Montreal.
8) George Groves (6-11-33)
Last Fight: 12/15/2012- UD12 Glen Johnson (UNR)
Next Fight: 3/16/2013- vs. #14 Mouhamed Ali Ndiaye
Ndiaye-Groves now has a date.  March 16, as part of what’s shaping up to be a Frank Warren megacard at Wembley Arena in London.
9) Karoly Balzsay (6-31-45)
Last Fight: 4/21/2012- TKO12 #8 Dimitri Sartison
Next Fight: Unknown
Balzsay suffered a back injury way back in August, but I don’t know if that remains a factor as to why he hasn’t scheduled a fight since then.  More likely, his ties to practically defunct promotional company Universum are the primary reason.
10) Sakio Bika (2-2-308)
Last Fight: 2/16/2013- UD12 Nikola Sjekloca (UNR)

Next Fight: Unknown
Bika did as expected and outclassed Sjekloca, and now has a fight with Bute (possibly) on the horizon, with an upside of a theoretical rematch with Andre Ward.
11) Andy Lee (2-103)
Last Fight: 2/9/2013- W(PTS10) vs. Anthony Fitzgerald (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Having not fought in anything truly resembling a super middleweight fight since March 10, Lee will be subject to removal if he hasn’t scheduled a relevant fight by that date.
12) Anthony Dirrell (6-65)
Last Fight: 12/2/2011- TKO4 Renan St. Juste (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
After his motorcycle crash, Anthony Dirrell was said to be out until at least November.  November has come and gone, and not a peep.  As for his ranking, I will now commit to not remove him until at least June 2, 2013 due to his very serious injury situation.
13) Will Rosinsky (6-37)
Last Fight: 12/19/2012- UD10 Otis Griffin (UNR) (at LHW)
Next Fight: Unknown
Rosinsky was cut and also outmuscled for much of his fight with Griffin, but managed to cobble together enough rounds to eek out a decision.  He admitted after the fight that he’s too small for light heavyweight, and pledged to return here or, possibly, even drop down to 160.
14) Mouhamed Ali Ndiaye (6-68)
Last Fight: 5/26/2012- RTD9 Jose Maria Guerrero (UNR)
Next Fight: 3/16/2013- vs. #8 George Groves
Ndiaye-Groves is set for March 16 in London.
15) Dimitri Sartison (6-139)
Last Fight: 1/27/2013- UD6 Artem Solomko (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Sartison appeared to have a fight scheduled for 3/9, but it’s no longer showing up on boxrec.
16) James DeGale (6-72)
Last Fight: 12/8/2012- UD12 Fulgencio Zuniga (UNR)
Next Fight: 3/23/2013- vs. Pablo Farias (UNR)
DeGale takes on 2-loss Argentine prospect Pablo Farias in Bluewater, England on March 23.
17) Ezequiel Maderna (6-9)
Last Fight: 12/14/2012- RTD7 Claudio Abalos
Next Fight: 3/30/2013- vs. #19 Edwin Rodriguez
Maderna gets the first real international break of his career on March 30, when he fights fellow up-and-coming prospect Edwin Rodriguez of Massachusetts by way of the Dominican Republic, with the winner to fight the winner of Erdei-Grachev.  I actually can’t find it anywhere, but the fact that Grachev and especially Erdei are light heavyweights typically would seem to indicate that Maderna-Rodriguez might be at that weight, too.
18) Maxim Vlasov (1-16)
Last Fight: 12/30/2012- RTD7 Geard Ajetovic (UNR)
Next Fight: 4/6/2013- vs. Ruben Acosta (UNR)
Vlasov has been keeping busy against basically a good journeyman level of opposition, and continues that trend by taking on Argentina’s Ruben Acosta in Russia.
19) Edwin Rodriguez (1-6)
Last Fight: 9/29/2012- TKO8 Jason Escalera (UNR)
Next Fight: 3/30/2013- vs. #17 Ezequiel Maderna
See Maderna’s notes, above.
20) Dyah Davis (1-1)
Last Fight: 6/2/2012- L (TKO10) vs. #9 Sakio Bika
Next Fight: Unknown
Davis backs into the #20 spot, having lost his last fight and not having fought at all since early June.

The Week Ahead: No action to report this week.

Super Middleweight: 2013, Feb 18-24

#11 Sakio Bika easily handled game but out-gunned Serbian prospect Nikola Sjekloca on HBO this Saturday.  Bika won every round, though a couple of the judges managed to find a round or two to give Sjekloca.  Bika looked pretty sharp, and in comparison to previous fights seems to have substituted a little bit of discipline in place of a portion of his normal aggression.  Sjekloca actually fared a tad better than I expected despite the lopsided outcome.  That shows what I thought of him, having seen him get a pretty clear gift against Khoren Gevor and having heard that he got one against Hadillah Mohoumadi, as well.  If nothing else, he didn’t back down against the best opponent of his career.

The same night in Montevideo, Uraguay, local 2-loss prospect Noe Gonzalez needed less than a minute to dispose of weak Brazilian journeyman Idiozan Matos.

Bika’s win is good enough to allow him to swap places with Andy Lee, thus re-entering the top 10 for the first time since mid-December.  Lee has always been a glorified middleweight, with all of his significant victims weighing between 160.5 and 163, making an otherwise difficult call rather easy.  Lee had been back in the top 10 for just 4 weeks.

Dan’s Top 20
Champ: Andre Ward (62-196-196)

8) George Groves (5-10-32)
Last Fight: 12/15/2012- UD12 Glen Johnson (UNR)

12) Anthony Dirrell (5-64)
Last Fight: 12/2/2011- TKO4 Renan St. Juste (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
After his motorcycle crash, Anthony Dirrell was said to be out until at least November.  November has come and gone, and not a peep.  Hopefully he gets back in the ring before his woefully inactive twin brother.  As for his ranking, I will now commit to not remove him until at least June 2, 2013 due to his very serious injury situation.
13) Will Rosinsky (5-36)
Last Fight: 12/19/2012- UD10 Otis Griffin (UNR) (at LHW)
Next Fight: Unknown
Rosinsky was cut and also outmuscled for much of his fight with Griffin, but managed to cobble together enough rounds to eek out a decision.  He admitted after the fight that he’s too small for light heavyweight, and pledged to return here or, possibly, even drop down to 160.

18) Jesus Gonzales (5-85)
Last Fight: 2/18/2012- L(KO1) vs. #9 Adonis Stevenson
Next Fight: Unknown
After being thrice-delayed, Gonzales’ fight with Albert Onolunose appears off.  That means that he’ll be removed if he hasn’t scheduled a fight by February 24.
19) Maxim Vlasov (5-15)
Last Fight: 12/30/2012- RTD7 Geard Ajetovic (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown

Super Middleweight: 2013, Feb 4-10

Posted in Rankings, Super Middleweight with tags , , , , , , , on February 7, 2013 by danboxing
On the non-televised Friday Night Fights undercard from Chicago, local gatekeeper Don George knocked out weak Missouri journeyman James Cook in just a minute and fifteen seconds.

The following night in McAllen, Texas, Andre Dirrell stepped between the ropes for the first time in more than a year, dominating journeyman Michael Gbenga over 10 rounds.  Unfortunately, the fight was at a contract weight of apparently 172 pounds.  What this means is that Dirrell remains inactive at 168- where he hasn’t fought since 2010- and therefore cannot reclaim the ranking that is otherwise waiting for him.  No changes.

Dan’s Top 20
Champ: Andre Ward (60-194-194)
Last Fight: 9/8/2012- TKO10 LHW Champ Chad Dawson
Next Fight: Unknown
Ward’s done with surgery, and is likely out until at least the Summer.
1) Carl Froch (37-347-347)

Abraham will rematch Stieglitz on March 23 in Stieglitz’s hometown of Magdeburg.
3) Mikkel Kessler (8-426-426)
Last Fight: 12/8/2012- TKO3 Brian Magee (UNR)
Next Fight: 5/25/2013- vs. #1 Carl Froch
See Froch’s notes, above.
4) Lucian Bute (24-356-356)
Last Fight: 11/3/2012- UD12 LHW #16 Denis Grachev (at LHW)
Next Fight: 5/25/2013- vs. Unknown Opponent
Bute will reportedly fight the Bika/Sjekloca winner as part of a split-site broadcast with Froch-Kessler on May 25.
5) Robert Stieglitz (24-180-180)
Last Fight: 8/25/2012- L(UD12) vs. #6 Arthur Abraham
Next Fight: 3/23/2013- #2 Arthur Abraham
See Abraham’s notes, above.
6) Thomas Oosthuizen (24-88-136)
Last Fight: 11/10/2012- UD12 Fulgencio Zuniga (UNR)
Next Fight: 3/2/2013- vs. Unknown Opponent
Oosthuizen has a fight scheduled in Connecticut on March 2, but no opponent yet.  Adonis Stevenson has been rumored.
7) Adonis Stevenson (17-61-61)
Last Fight: 10/12/2012- TKO12 Don George (UNR)
Next Fight: 3/22/2013- vs. Darnell Boone (UNR)
With his hopes of fighting Carl Froch dashed for the moment, Stevenson will tend to some unfinished business when he tries to avenge his 2010 stoppage loss to Darnell Boone on March 22 in Montreal.
8) George Groves (3-8-30)
Last Fight: 12/15/2012- UD12 Glen Johnson (UNR)
Next Fight: 3/16/2013- vs. #14 Mouhamed Ali Ndiaye
Ndiaye-Groves now has a date.  March 16, as part of what’s shaping up to be a Frank Warren megacard at Wembley Arena in London.
9) Karoly Balzsay (3-28-42)
Last Fight: 4/21/2012- TKO12 #8 Dimitri Sartison
Next Fight: Unknown
Balzsay suffered a back injury way back in August, but I don’t know if that remains a factor as to why he hasn’t scheduled a fight since then.  More likely, his ties to practically defunct promotional company Universum are the primary reason.
10) Andy Lee (3-3-100)
Last Fight: 6/16/2012- L(TKO7) vs. MW #4 Julio Cesar Chavez, Jr. (at MW)
Next Fight: 2/9/2013- vs. Anthony Fitzgerald (UNR)
After the death of his trainer and father figure Emmanuel Steward, Lee is back in the British Isles, training with Adam Booth.  He is scheduled to fight in Belfast for his first fight on the east side of the Atlantic since 2010 on February 9 against decent Irish journeyman Anthony Fitzgerald.  This could turn out to be at 160, which would put his 168 ranking in jeopardy.
11) Sakio Bika (3-305)
Last Fight: 6/2/2012- TKO10 Dyah Davis (UNR)

Next Fight: 2/16/2013- vs. Nikola Sjekloca (UNR)
Bika will get a very winnable fight with mediocre prospect Sjekloca for an interim title or, in effect, a potential shot at Champion Andre Ward.  Or maybe a shot at Bute for an eventual shot at Ward.
12) Anthony Dirrell (3-62)
Last Fight: 12/2/2011- TKO4 Renan St. Juste (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
After his motorcycle crash, Anthony Dirrell was said to be out until at least November.  November has come and gone, and not a peep.  Hopefully he gets back in the ring before his woefully inactive twin brother.  As for his ranking, I will now commit to not remove him until at least June 2, 2013 due to his very serious injury situation.
13) Will Rosinsky (3-34)
Last Fight: 12/19/2012- UD10 Otis Griffin (UNR) (at LHW)
Next Fight: Unknown
Rosinsky was cut and also outmuscled for much of his fight with Griffin, but managed to cobble together enough rounds to eek out a decision.  He admitted after the fight that he’s too small for light heavyweight, and pledged to return here or, possibly, even drop down to 160.
14) Mouhamed Ali Ndiaye (3-65)
Last Fight: 5/26/2012- RTD9 Jose Maria Guerrero (UNR)
Next Fight: 3/16/2013- vs. #8 George Groves
Ndiaye-Groves is set for March 16 in London.
15) Dimitri Sartison (3-136)
Last Fight: 1/27/2013- UD6 Artem Solomko (UNR)
Next Fight: 3/9/2013- vs. Unknown Opponent
Sartison is busy again, if nothing else.  After decisioning a weak opponent on 1/27, he’s got another fight scheduled for 3/9 already.
16) James DeGale (3-69)
Last Fight: 12/8/2012- UD12 Fulgencio Zuniga (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
DeGale had verbally penciled in his return for mid-February, but no discussion of that in a while.
17) Ezequiel Maderna (3-6)
Last Fight: 12/14/2012- RTD7 Claudio Abalos
Next Fight: 3/30/2013- vs. #20 Edwin Rodriguez
18) Jesus Gonzales (3-83)
Last Fight: 2/18/2012- L(KO1) vs. #9 Adonis Stevenson
Next Fight: Unknown
After being thrice-delayed, Gonzales’ fight with Albert Onolunose appears off.  That means that he’ll be removed if he hasn’t scheduled a fight by February 24.
19) Maxim Vlasov (3-13)
Last Fight: 12/30/2012- RTD7 Geard Ajetovic (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
After fighting just once in the first 10 months of 2012, Vlasov closed strong with 2 solid wins in the last 2 months.
20) Edwin Rodriguez (3-3)
Last Fight: 9/29/2012- TKO8 Jason Escalera (UNR)
Next Fight: 3/30/2013- vs. #17 Ezequiel Maderna
See Maderna’s notes, above.

The Week Ahead: #10 Andy Lee fights journeyman Anthony Fitzgerald in Belfast on Saturday.  I don’t have any good intel on whether the fight will be at 160 or over, though.  If it’s at 160, Lee might be looking at a removal here at 168 next month.

Super Middleweight: 2013, Jan 28- Feb 3

My lack of faith in the prospects of  #15 Dimitri Sartison’s scheduled fight Sunday actually coming off was apparently misplaced.  Sartison did, in fact, fight on Sunday in Heerlen, Netherlands, winning a ho-hum 6-round decision over journeyman Artem Solomko.  The fight was at light heavyweight.

Dan’s Top 20
Champ: Andre Ward (59-193-193)
Last Fight: 9/8/2012- TKO10 LHW Champ Chad Dawson
Next Fight: Unknown
Ward’s done with surgery, and is likely out until at least the Summer.
1) Carl Froch (36-346-346)
Last Fight: 11/17/2012- KO3 LHW #11 Yusaf Mack

The deal is done.  Froch will get a rematch with Kessler on May 25 in London.

Abraham will rematch Stieglitz on March 23 in Stieglitz’s hometown of Magdeburg.
3) Mikkel Kessler (7-425-425)

Last Fight: 11/3/2012- UD12 LHW #16 Denis Grachev (at LHW)

Bute will reportedly fight the Bika/Sjekloca winner as part of a split-site broadcast with Froch-Kessler on May 25.
5) Robert Stieglitz (23-179-179)
Last Fight: 8/25/2012- L(UD12) vs. #6 Arthur Abraham

6) Thomas Oosthuizen (23-87-135)
Last Fight: 11/10/2012- UD12 Fulgencio Zuniga (UNR)
Next Fight: 3/2/2013- vs. Unknown Opponent
Oosthuizen has a fight scheduled in Connecticut on March 2, but no opponent yet.  Adonis Stevenson has been rumored.
7) Adonis Stevenson (16-60-60)
Last Fight: 10/12/2012- TKO12 Don George (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Stevenson is petitioning the IBF to allow him to fight either Oosthuizen, Bute, or Edwin Rodriguez for an interim title.  If successful, he would theoretically get the Froch-Kessler winner for the full title.
8) George Groves (2-7-29)
Last Fight: 12/15/2012- UD12 Glen Johnson (UNR)
Next Fight: 3/16/2013- vs. #14 Mouhamed Ali Ndiaye
Ndiaye-Groves now has a date.  March 16, as part of what’s shaping up to be a Frank Warren megacard at Wembley Arena in London.
9) Karoly Balzsay (2-27-41)
Last Fight: 4/21/2012- TKO12 #8 Dimitri Sartison
Next Fight: Unknown
Balzsay suffered a back injury way back in August, but I don’t know if that remains a factor as to why he hasn’t scheduled a fight since then.  More likely, his ties to practically defunct promotional company Universum are the primary reason.
10) Andy Lee (2-2-99)
11) Sakio Bika (2-304)
Last Fight: 6/2/2012- TKO10 Dyah Davis (UNR)

Next Fight: 2/16/2013- vs. Nikola Sjekloca (UNR)
Bika will get a very winnable fight with mediocre prospect Sjekloca for an interim title or, in effect, a potential shot at Champion Andre Ward.  Or maybe a shot at Bute for an eventual shot at Ward.
12) Anthony Dirrell (2-61)
Last Fight: 12/2/2011- TKO4 Renan St. Juste (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
After his motorcycle crash, Anthony Dirrell was said to be out until at least November.  November has come and gone, and not a peep.  Hopefully he gets back in the ring before his woefully inactive twin brother.  As for his ranking, I will now commit to not remove him until at least June 2, 2013 due to his very serious injury situation.
13) Will Rosinsky (2-33)
Last Fight: 12/19/2012- UD10 Otis Griffin (UNR) (at LHW)
Next Fight: Unknown
Rosinsky was cut and also outmuscled for much of his fight with Griffin, but managed to cobble together enough rounds to eek out a decision.  He admitted after the fight that he’s too small for light heavyweight, and pledged to return here or, possibly, even drop down to 160.
14) Mouhamed Ali Ndiaye (2-64)
Last Fight: 5/26/2012- RTD9 Jose Maria Guerrero (UNR)
Next Fight: 3/16/2013- vs. #8 George Groves
Ndiaye-Groves is set for March 16 in London.
15) Dimitri Sartison (2-135)
Last Fight: 1/27/2013- UD6 Artem Solomko (UNR)
Next Fight: 3/9/2013- vs. Unknown Opponent
Sartison is busy again, if nothing else.  After decisioning a weak opponent on 1/27, he’s got another fight scheduled for 3/9 already.
16) James DeGale (2-68)
Last Fight: 12/8/2012- UD12 Fulgencio Zuniga (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
DeGale had verbally penciled in his return for mid-February, but no discussion of that in a while.
17) Ezequiel Maderna (2-5)
Last Fight: 12/14/2012- RTD7 Claudio Abalos
Next Fight: Unknown
Maderna is back in the rankings for the first time since December 2011 after his under-the-radar win over Abalos.
18) Jesus Gonzales (2-82)
Last Fight: 2/18/2012- L(KO1) vs. #9 Adonis Stevenson
Next Fight: 3/2/2013- vs. Albert Onolunose (UNR)
Gonzales’ fight at Desperado’s Nightclub in Calgary has been pushed back for a third time- this time to March 2.  That puts him over a year from his last fight, so if it falls through, he’s gone.
19) Maxim Vlasov (2-12)
Last Fight: 12/30/2012- RTD7 Geard Ajetovic (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
After fighting just once in the first 10 months of 2012, Vlasov closed strong with 2 solid wins in the last 2 months.
20) Edwin Rodriguez (2-2)
Last Fight: 9/29/2012- TKO8 Jason Escalera (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
The last news on Rodriguez’s next fight was that he would be participating in a 4-man tournament in Monaco starting in March, with Zsolt Erdei, Jean Paul Mendy, and Dmitri Sukhotski.  This news surfaced before Christmas, and I’ve heard no more about it.  Stay tuned.

The Week Ahead: Gatekeeper Don George fights in his hometown of Chicago against weak and inactive Missouri journeyman James Cook on the Friday Night Fights card.  I don’t know if the fight will make the broadcast- my guess is no- but perhaps it will sneak onto the post-broadcast broadcast on ESPN3.com.

Andre Dirrell is scheduled to fight in McAllen, Texas on Saturday against journeyman Michael Gbenga.  This would be Dirrell’s first fight in over a year, and just his second in nearly 3 years.  Still, he’s likely to claim some sort of ranking if he wins and stays under 168.

2) Arthur Abraham (4-168-168)
Last Fight: 12/15/2012- TKO8 Mehdi Bouadla (UNR)

Next Fight: Unknown

4) Lucian Bute (20-352-352)
Last Fight: 11/3/2012- UD12 LHW #16 Denis Grachev (at LHW)
Next Fight: Unknown
Bute appears likely to take Andre Ward’s place as Pavlik’s next opponent.
5) Robert Stieglitz (20-176-176)
Last Fight: 8/25/2012- L(UD12) vs. #6 Arthur Abraham
Next Fight: Unknown

Next Fight: 3/2/2013- vs. Unknown Opponent
Oosthuizen has a fight scheduled in Connecticut on March 2, but no opponent yet.
7) Adonis Stevenson (13-57-57)
Last Fight: 10/12/2012- TKO12 Don George (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
After it appeared for a while that Froch was solely focused on Kessler, Stevenson has revealed that he’s been negotiating with the Brit, as well.
8) Kelly Pavlik (13-27-27)
Last Fight: 7/7/2012- UD10 #12 Will Rosinsky
Next Fight: Unknown
With Ward needing surgery for a shoulder injury, Pavlik is looking for other options- with Bute being a distinct possibility.
9) George Groves (4-4-26)
Last Fight: 12/15/2012- UD12 Glen Johnson (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown Date- vs. #15 Mouhamed Ali Ndiaye
With DeGale having caved to pressure by the WBC and their weak “silver belt” and relinquishing his European Title, Groves now appears likely to fight for the vacated strap against the man DeGale had been set to fight, Mouhamed Ali Ndiaye.
10) Karoly Balzsay (24-24-38)
Last Fight: 4/21/2012- TKO12 #8 Dimitri Sartison
Next Fight: Unknown
Balzsay suffered a back injury way back in August, but I don’t know if that remains a factor as to why he hasn’t scheduled a fight since then.  More likely, his ties to practically defunct promotional company Universum are the primary reason.
11) Andy Lee (27-96)
Last Fight: 6/16/2012- L(TKO7) vs. MW#? Julio Cesar Chavez, Jr.
12) Sakio Bika (4-301)
Last Fight: 6/2/2012- TKO10 Dyah Davis (UNR)

Next Fight: Unknown
Bika has informed me that he plans to fight early in the new year, but could not provide any more information. He says the fight should be announced soon.
13) Anthony Dirrell (4-58)
Last Fight: 12/2/2011- TKO4 Renan St. Juste (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
After his motorcycle crash, Anthony Dirrell was said to be out until at least November.  November has come and gone, and not a peep.  Hopefully he gets back in the ring before his woefully inactive twin brother.  As for his ranking, I will now commit to not remove him until at least June 2, 2013 due to his very serious injury situation.
14) Will Rosinsky (4-30)
Last Fight: 12/19/2012- UD10 Otis Griffin (UNR) (at LHW)
Next Fight: Unknown
Rosinsky was cut and also outmuscled for much of his fight with Griffin, but managed to cobble together enough rounds to eek out a decision.  He admitted after the fight that he’s too small for light heavyweight, and pledged to return here or, possibly, even drop down to 160.
15) Mouhamed Ali Ndiaye (4-61)
Last Fight: 5/26/2012- RTD9 Jose Maria Guerrero (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown Date- vs. #9 George Groves
After appearing set to fight James DeGale, Ndiaye might have a date with DeGale’s rival George Groves, instead, after DeGale vacated the belt the two were to fight for.
16) Dimitri Sartison (4-132)
Last Fight: 4/21/2012- L(TKO12) vs. Karoly Balzsay (UNR)
Next Fight: 1/27/2013- vs. Unknown Opponent
Sartison is on the schedule for January 27 in the Netherlands.  With Universum still his promoter at last check, I’ll believe it when I see it.
17) James DeGale (4-65)
Last Fight: 12/8/2012- UD12 Fulgencio Zuniga (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
DeGale was set to fight the highest-ranked fighter of his career in January, but opted to drop the EBU belt in favor of a third-rate WBC trinket.  In doing so, he appears to have bequeathed the risk and the opportunity of the Ndiaye fight to his domestic rival, George Groves.  DeGale has already tentatively set his return for mid-February, with no opponent yet announced.
18) Ezequiel Maderna (2-2)
Last Fight: 12/14/2012- RTD7 Claudio Abalos
Next Fight: Unknown
Maderna is back in the rankings for the first time since December 2011 after his under-the-radar win over Abalos.
19) Jesus Gonzales (2-79)
Last Fight: 2/18/2012- L(KO1) vs. #9 Adonis Stevenson
Next Fight: 3/2/2013- vs. Albert Onolunose (UNR)
Gonzales’ fight at Desperado’s Nightclub in Calgary has been pushed back for a third time- this time to March 2.  That puts him over a year from his last fight, so if it falls through, he’s gone.
20) Maxim Vlasov (2-9)
Last Fight: 12/30/2012- RTD7 Geard Ajetovic (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
After fighting just once in the first 10 months of 2012, Vlasov closed strong with 2 solid wins in the last 2 months.

The Week Ahead: Prospect Brandon Gonzales (I won’t call him undefeated because he got absolutely dominated by Ossie Duran a bit over a year ago) will move up to fight as a full-fledged super middleweight after edging that direction in his last few fights when he fights in Santa Fe, New Mexico on Friday.  His opponent is mid-level journeyman Don Mouton of Houston.

Super Middleweight: 2012-2013, Dec 31-Jan 6

Posted in Rankings, Super Middleweight with tags , , , , , , , on January 4, 2013 by danboxing
In the week’s only significant action, #19 Maxim Vlasov handled solid Croatian journeyman Geard Ajetovic with relative ease, winning a 10-round decision and losing only 2 rounds between the three cards.

However, there will be a change in the rankings this week- and a rather unexpected one, at that.  As it turns out, there was a meaningful fight in Argentina on December 14 that never made it onto the Boxrec schedule until it was over.  As a result, I totally missed it.  That fight featured undefeated prospect Ezequiel Maderna defeating ordinarily middleweight gatekeeper Claudio Abalos when Abalos failed to answer the bell to start the 7th.  I’m not going to go back in time and change the last two weeks of rankings.  First, there is an argument to be made that since Abalos is only a gatekeeper at middleweight, he may be something less than that at 168.  Therefore, not ranking Maderna for these two weeks doesn’t strike me as the level of injustice that would demand retroactive action.  That being said, I do believe that Maderna has sufficiently proven himself to earn a ranking now.  He was previously ranked for the majority of 2011 before being forced out by the debut of Anthony Dirrell.  He returns at #18, forcing Edwin Rodriguez out after 22 weeks.

Dan’s Top 20
Champ: Andre Ward (55-189-189)
Last Fight: 9/8/2012- TKO10 LHW Champ Chad Dawson
Next Fight: Unknown
Ward needs surgery to repair a tear in his shoulder capsule, and is likely on the shelf until Summer at the earliest.
1) Carl Froch (32-342-342)
Last Fight: 11/17/2012- KO3 LHW #11 Yusaf Mack
Next Fight: Unknown
Froch is trying to finalize a deal with Kessler, and Bute acknowledges that he might be looking at the Fall for his rematch.
2) Arthur Abraham (3-167-167)
Last Fight: 12/15/2012- TKO8 Mehdi Bouadla (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown date- vs. #5 Robert Stieglitz
The odd Stieglitz rematch now appears essentially done, with a likely date of either March 30 or April 6.
3) Mikkel Kessler (3-421-421)
Last Fight: 12/8/2012- TKO3 Brian Magee (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Kessler and Froch are discussing a re-match.
4) Lucian Bute (19-351-351)
Last Fight: 11/3/2012- UD12 LHW #16 Denis Grachev (at LHW)
Next Fight: Unknown
Bute appears likely to take Andre Ward’s place as Pavlik’s next opponent.
5) Robert Stieglitz (19-175-175)
Last Fight: 8/25/2012- L(UD12) vs. #6 Arthur Abraham
Next Fight: Unknown
See Abraham’s notes, above.
6) Thomas Oosthuizen (19-83-131)
Last Fight: 11/10/2012- UD12 Fulgencio Zuniga (UNR)
Next Fight: 3/2/2013- vs. Unknown Opponent
Oosthuizen has a fight scheduled in Connecticut on March 2, but no opponent yet.
7) Adonis Stevenson (12-56-56)
Last Fight: 10/12/2012- TKO12 Don George (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Stevenson probably has a shot at Carl Froch due to him at some point, as he is the mandatory challenger for Froch’s belt.  But Froch already has a contracted fight with Bute likely in March.
8) Kelly Pavlik (12-26-26)
Last Fight: 7/7/2012- UD10 #12 Will Rosinsky
Next Fight: Unknown
With Ward needing surgery for a shoulder injury, Pavlik is looking for other options- with Bute being a distinct possibility.
9) George Groves (3-3-25)
Last Fight: 12/15/2012- UD12 Glen Johnson (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
With DeGale having caved to pressure by the WBC and their weak “silver belt” and relinquishing his European Title, Groves now appears likely to fight for the vacated strap against the man DeGale had been set to fight, Mouhamed Ali Ndiaye.  No word of talks between the two, but a purse bid has been scheduled.
10) Karoly Balzsay (23-23-37)
Last Fight: 4/21/2012- TKO12 #8 Dimitri Sartison
Next Fight: Unknown
Balzsay suffered a back injury way back in August, but I don’t know if that remains a factor as to why he hasn’t scheduled a fight since then.  More likely, his ties to practically defunct promotional company Universum are the primary reason.
11) Andy Lee (26-95)
Last Fight: 6/16/2012- L(TKO7) vs. MW#? Julio Cesar Chavez, Jr.
12) Sakio Bika (3-300)
Last Fight: 6/2/2012- TKO10 Dyah Davis (UNR)

Next Fight: Unknown
Bika has informed me that he plans to fight early in the new year, but could not provide any more information. He says the fight should be announced soon.
13) Anthony Dirrell (3-57)
Last Fight: 12/2/2011- TKO4 Renan St. Juste (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
After his motorcycle crash, Anthony Dirrell was said to be out until at least November.  November has come and gone, and not a peep.  Hopefully he gets back in the ring before his woefully inactive twin brother.  As for his ranking, I will now commit to not remove him until at least June 2, 2013 due to his very serious injury situation.
14) Will Rosinsky (3-29)
Last Fight: 12/19/2012- UD10 Otis Griffin (UNR) (at LHW)
Next Fight: Unknown
Rosinsky was cut and also outmuscled for much of his fight with Griffin, but managed to cobble together enough rounds to eek out a decision.  He admitted after the fight that he’s too small for light heavyweight, and pledged to return here or, possibly, even drop down to 160.
15) Mouhamed Ali Ndiaye (3-60)
Last Fight: 5/26/2012- RTD9 Jose Maria Guerrero (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
After appearing set to fight James DeGale, Ndiaye might have a date with DeGale’s rival George Groves, instead, after DeGale vacated the belt the two were to fight for.
16) Dimitri Sartison (3-131)
Last Fight: 4/21/2012- L(TKO12) vs. Karoly Balzsay (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Sartison has been medically cleared since August following another knee surgery, and was said to be looking to return in December, but he has no fight scheduled yet, and no recent buzz of any kind, either.  It may be significant to note that he is a Universum fighter, and that that promotional outfit has become practically defunct in recent months.
17) James DeGale (3-64)
Last Fight: 12/8/2012- UD12 Fulgencio Zuniga (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
DeGale was set to fight the highest-ranked fighter of his career in January, but opted to drop the EBU belt in favor of a third-rate WBC trinket.  In doing so, he appears to have bequeathed the risk and the opportunity of the Ndiaye fight to his domestic rival, George Groves.  DeGale has already tentatively set his return for mid-February, with no opponent yet announced.
18) Ezequiel Maderna (1-1)
Last Fight: 12/14/2012- RTD7 Claudio Abalos
Next Fight: Unknown
Maderna is back in the rankings for the first time since December 2011 after his under-the-radar win over Abalos.
19) Jesus Gonzales (1-78)
Last Fight: 2/18/2012- L(KO1) vs. #9 Adonis Stevenson
Next Fight: 1/19/2013- vs. Albert Onolunose (UNR)
Gonzales’ fight at Desperado’s Nightclub in Calgary has been pushed back for a second time- this time to January 19.  But at least he has an opponent now- Nigerian journeyman Albert Onolunose, who is frankly a level or two better than I was expecting Gonzales to fight in such a small-sounding venue.
20) Maxim Vlasov (1-8)
Last Fight: 12/30/2012- RTD7 Geard Ajetovic (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
After fighting just once in the first 10 months of 2012, Vlasov closed strong with 2 solid wins in the last 2 months.

The Week Ahead: No fights of note at 168 this week.

Super Middleweight: 2012, Dec 24-30

Posted in Rankings, Super Middleweight with tags , , , , , , , on December 26, 2012 by danboxing
No major fights at 168 last week.

Dan’s Top 20
Champ: Andre Ward (54-188-188)
Last Fight: 9/8/2012- TKO10 LHW Champ Chad Dawson
Next Fight: 2/23/2012- vs. #8 Kelly Pavlik
An injury to Ward has caused his January 26 fight with Kelly Pavlik to be postponed to February 23.
1) Carl Froch (31-341-341)
Last Fight: 11/17/2012- KO3 LHW #11 Yusaf Mack
Next Fight: Unknown
All indications are that Bute still wants a rematch, but Froch has now started making noise about fighting Kessler suspiciously close to the prospective date for the Bute fight.  Meanwhile, Adonis Stevenson is Froch’s mandatory, but appears to be on the outside looking in at the moment.
2) Arthur Abraham (2-166-166)
Last Fight: 12/15/2012- TKO8 Mehdi Bouadla (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
I’m not sure if the German public is demanding it or something, but what strikes me as a rather unnecessary rematch with Robert Stieglitz is in talks for April 9th, in Germany.
3) Mikkel Kessler (2-420-420)
Last Fight: 12/8/2012- TKO3 Brian Magee (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Kessler and Froch are discussing a fight according to Froch, but it’s unclear what effect the contracted Bute rematch will have on those discussions.
4) Lucian Bute (18-350-350)
Last Fight: 11/3/2012- UD12 LHW #16 Denis Grachev (at LHW)
Next Fight: Unknown
At last check, Bute still wanted the Froch rematch, but Froch has inexplicably begun talking publicly about negotiating another fight.
5) Robert Stieglitz (18-174-174)
Last Fight: 8/25/2012- L(UD12) vs. #6 Arthur Abraham
Next Fight: Unknown
See Abraham’s notes, above.
6) Thomas Oosthuizen (18-82-130)
Last Fight: 11/10/2012- UD12 Fulgencio Zuniga (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Oosthuizen missed weight initially but managed to sweat it off to fight Zuniga.
7) Adonis Stevenson (11-55-55)
Last Fight: 10/12/2012- TKO12 Don George (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Stevenson probably has a shot at Carl Froch due to him at some point, as he is the mandatory challenger for Froch’s belt.  But Froch already has a contracted fight with Bute likely in March.
8) Kelly Pavlik (11-25-25)
Last Fight: 7/7/2012- UD10 #12 Will Rosinsky
Next Fight: 2/23/2013- vs. Champ Andre Ward
Ward was injured, so his fight with Pavlik was rescheduled for February 23.
9) George Groves (2-2-24)
Last Fight: 12/15/2012- UD12 Glen Johnson (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
With DeGale having caved to pressure by the WBC and their weak “silver belt” and relinquishing his European Title, Groves now appears likely to fight for the vacated strap against the man DeGale had been set to fight, Mouhamed Ali Ndiaye.  No word of talks between the two, but a purse bid has been scheduled.
10) Karoly Balzsay (22-22-36)
Last Fight: 4/21/2012- TKO12 #8 Dimitri Sartison
Next Fight: Unknown
Balzsay suffered a back injury way back in August, but I don’t know if that remains a factor as to why he hasn’t scheduled a fight since then.
11) Andy Lee (25-94)
Last Fight: 6/16/2012- L(TKO7) vs. MW#? Julio Cesar Chavez, Jr.
12) Sakio Bika (2-299)
Last Fight: 6/2/2012- TKO10 Dyah Davis (UNR)

Next Fight: Unknown
13) Anthony Dirrell (2-56)
Last Fight: 12/2/2011- TKO4 Renan St. Juste (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
After his motorcycle crash, Anthony Dirrell was said to be out until at least November.  November has come and gone, and not a peep.  Hopefully he gets back in the ring before his woefully inactive twin brother.  As for his ranking, I will now commit to not remove him until at least June 2, 2013 due to his very serious injury situation.
14) Will Rosinsky (2-28)
Last Fight: 12/19/2012- UD10 Otis Griffin (UNR) (at LHW)
Next Fight: Unknown
Rosinsky was cut and also outmuscled for much of his fight with Griffin, but managed to cobble together enough rounds to eek out a decision.  He admitted after the fight that he’s too small for light heavyweight, and pledged to return here or, possibly, even drop down to 160.
15) Mouhamed Ali Ndiaye (2-59)
Last Fight: 5/26/2012- RTD9 Jose Maria Guerrero (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
After appearing set to fight James DeGale, Ndiaye might have a date with DeGale’s rival George Groves, instead, after DeGale vacated the belt the two were to fight for.
16) Dimitri Sartison (2-130)
Last Fight: 4/21/2012- L(TKO12) vs. Karoly Balzsay (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Sartison has been medically cleared since August following another knee surgery, and was said to be looking to return in December, but he has no fight scheduled yet, and no recent buzz of any kind, either.  It may be significant to note that he is a Universum fighter, and that that promotional outfit has become practically defunct in recent months.
17) James DeGale (2-63)
Last Fight: 12/8/2012- UD12 Fulgencio Zuniga (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
DeGale was set to fight the highest-ranked fighter of his career in January, but opted to drop the EBU belt in favor of a third-rate WBC trinket.  In doing so, he appears to have bequeathed the risk and the opportunity of the Ndiaye fight to his domestic rival, George Groves.  DeGale has already tentatively set his return for mid-February, with no opponent yet announced.

Last Fight: 2/18/2012- L(KO1) vs. #9 Adonis Stevenson
Next Fight: 1/19/2012- vs.
19) Maxim Vlasov (7-7)
Last Fight: 11/5/2012- UD10 Khoren Gevor (UNR)
Next Fight: 12/30/2012- vs. Geard Ajetovic (UNR)
Vlasov will fight again on New Year’s Eve Eve against decent Serbian journeyman Geard Ajetovic in Moscow.
20) Edwin Rodriguez (7-22)
Last Fight: 9/29/2012- TKO8 Jason Escalera (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Interesting- if a bit bizzarre- news from Monaco.  Rodriguez is apparently set to fight French journeyman Jean Paul Mendy in the first round of a tournament in Monaco this March.  If successful, he would get the winner of Zsolt Erdei versus Dmitri Sukhotski.  My guess is that these fights would take place at 175.

The Week Ahead: The only fight in the division worth mentioning in the division this week is Sunday in Moscow, when #19 Maxim Vlasov takes on fairly solid Croatian journeyman Geard Ajetovic.

Super Middleweight: 2012, Dec 17-23

Posted in Rankings, Super Middleweight with tags , , , , , , , on December 23, 2012 by danboxing
Saturday in Nuremberg, Germany, #3 Arthur Abraham attempted to make a case to regain the #2 spot taken from him by Mikkel Kessler just last week, by fighting a top 50 opponent that Kessler defeated last year in Frenchman Mehdi Bouadla, with Abraham and Kessler being neck and neck in the rankings.  Abraham certainly did what he could, knocking Bouadla out in 8.

In a possibly even more important fight in London, #18 George Groves took on former Light Heavyweight Champion Glen Johnson, who was returning from a very brief retirement.  As it turns out, the venerable Road Warrior should have stayed retired, and frankly fought like he might still be.  If the fight was all about coming forward, or if it had been some sort of staring contest, Johnson would have come out on top hands down, but although he frequently walked the younger man down, Johnson just could not or would not let his hands go, even in the apparent best of circumstances.  At 43, it appears that Johnson just can’t pull the trigger anymore when needed.  My guess is we’ll see him hang them up again in the near future, and this time I expect it will stick.  I had the fight 118-109, and that was a bit more generous to Johnson than were any of the official judges.

Bouadla is just barely enough for Abraham to nudge back past Kessler to regain the #2 spot he lost last week.

Groves’ movement is much more dramatic.  Even though Johnson was unranked due to his retirement, and even though he fought like a mere journeyman, he came into the fight as the equivalent of a top 20 contender, and likely would have been rated as such had he not removed himself after his previous fight.  This amounts to the most significant victory of Groves’ career, and he is launched all the way to #9, just behind Kelly Pavlik.

Johnson, having become active again (at least for now), nearly returns to the rankings, but narrowly misses out.  I am glad he does, because I’d honestly hate to have to rank him after the showing he made on Saturday.

As he was passed by Groves, I noticed that 3 of last week’s #9 Sakio Bika’s signature wins from late 2007 on the Contender series had recently expired, in that they have passed the 5-year threshold after which I cease to consider them significant in principle.  Therefore, I have re-evaluated Bika’s position, and found that his two remaining significant wins only justify a ranking of #12 at this time.  He had been in the top 10 for a year straight, pretty much to the day.  Everyone rated #12-17 last week is forced down one spot in the re-alignment.

Dan’s Top 20
Champ: Andre Ward (53-187-187)
Last Fight: 9/8/2012- TKO10 LHW Champ Chad Dawson
Next Fight: 2/23/2012- vs. #8 Kelly Pavlik
An injury to Ward has caused his January 26 fight with Kelly Pavlik to be postponed to February 23.
1) Carl Froch (30-340-340)
Last Fight: 11/17/2012- KO3 LHW #11 Yusaf Mack
Next Fight: Unknown
All indications are that Bute still wants a rematch, but Froch has now started making noise about fighting Kessler suspiciously close to the prospective date for the Bute fight.  Meanwhile, Adonis Stevenson is Froch’s mandatory, but appears to be on the outside looking in at the moment.
2) Arthur Abraham (1-165-165)
Last Fight: 12/15/2012- TKO8 Mehdi Bouadla (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Not really much intrigue to the Bouadla fight, but it did give him a narrow edge here over Kessler again.
3) Mikkel Kessler (1-419-419)
Last Fight: 12/8/2012- TKO3 Brian Magee (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Kessler and Froch are discussing a fight according to Froch, but it’s unclear what effect the contracted Bute rematch will have on those discussions.
4) Lucian Bute (17-349-349)
Last Fight: 11/3/2012- UD12 LHW #16 Denis Grachev (at LHW)
Next Fight: Unknown
At last check, Bute still wanted the Froch rematch, but Froch has inexplicably begun talking publicly about negotiating another fight.
5) Robert Stieglitz (17-173-173)
Last Fight: 8/25/2012- L(UD12) vs. #6 Arthur Abraham
Next Fight: Unknown
Stieglitz was somewhat busted up in the tough Abraham fight, and so I expect him to take a few months off at least.
6) Thomas Oosthuizen (17-81-129)
Last Fight: 11/10/2012- UD12 Fulgencio Zuniga (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Oosthuizen missed weight initially but managed to sweat it off to fight Zuniga.
7) Adonis Stevenson (10-54-54)
Last Fight: 10/12/2012- TKO12 Don George (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Stevenson probably has a shot at Carl Froch due to him at some point, as he is the mandatory challenger for Froch’s belt.  But Froch already has a contracted fight with Bute likely in March.
8) Kelly Pavlik (10-24-24)
Last Fight: 7/7/2012- UD10 #12 Will Rosinsky
Next Fight: 2/23/2013- vs. Champ Andre Ward
Ward was injured, so his fight with Pavlik was rescheduled for February 23.
9) George Groves (1-1-23)
Last Fight: 12/15/2012- UD12 Glen Johnson (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Groves may have gotten a bit of a lucky break considering how old Johnson looked in their fight, but the old veteran still had the credentials to help support Groves’ rise to the top 10.
10) Karoly Balzsay (21-21-35)
Last Fight: 4/21/2012- TKO12 #8 Dimitri Sartison
Next Fight: Unknown
Balzsay suffered a back injury way back in August, but I don’t know if that remains a factor as to why he hasn’t scheduled a fight since then.
11) Andy Lee (24-93)
Last Fight: 6/16/2012- L(TKO7) vs. MW#? Julio Cesar Chavez, Jr. (at MW)
Next Fight: Unknown
Lee has recently challenged Matthew Macklin to what would likely be a middleweight bout.  No word on whether or not that’s likely to happen.
12) Sakio Bika (1-298)
Last Fight: 6/2/2012- TKO10 Dyah Davis (UNR)

Next Fight: Unknown
13) Anthony Dirrell (1-55)
Last Fight: 12/2/2011- TKO4 Renan St. Juste (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
After his motorcycle crash, Anthony Dirrell was said to be out until at least November.  November has come and gone, and not a peep.  Hopefully he gets back in the ring before his woefully inactive twin brother.  As for his ranking, I will now commit to not remove him until at least June 2, 2013 due to his very serious injury situation.
14) Will Rosinsky (1-27)
Last Fight: 7/7/2012- L(UD10) vs. Kelly Pavlik (UNR)
Next Fight: 12/19/2012- vs. Otis Griffin (UNR)
Rosinsky will fight former fringe contender Otis Griffin- who recently reversed a losing streak with a win over a weaker journeyman- on December 19 in New York.
15) Mouhamed Ali Ndiaye (1-58)
Last Fight: 5/26/2012- RTD9 Jose Maria Guerrero (UNR)
Next Fight: 1/26/2013- vs. #16 James DeGale
Ndiaye’s fight with DeGale is set for late January instead of December 8 as reported earlier.  DeGale will be fighting a likely lesser opponent on December 8, it appears.
16) Dimitri Sartison (1-129)
Last Fight: 4/21/2012- L(TKO12) vs. Karoly Balzsay (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Sartison has been medically cleared since August following another knee surgery, and was said to be looking to return in December, but he has no fight scheduled yet, and no recent buzz of any kind, either.
17) James DeGale (1-62)
Last Fight: 12/8/2012- UD12 Fulgencio Zuniga (UNR)
Next Fight: 1/26/2013- vs. #14 Mouhamed Ali Ndiaye
After a nice win for DeGale over Zuniga, there is no rest for the wicked, as he’ll be fighting the toughest opponent of his career (or at least highest-ranked) in Ndiaye just 6 weeks later.
18) Jesus Gonzales (1-76)
Last Fight: 2/18/2012- L(KO1) vs. #9 Adonis Stevenson
Next Fight: 1/19/2012- vs.
19) Maxim Vlasov (6-6)
Last Fight: 11/5/2012- UD10 Khoren Gevor (UNR)
Next Fight: 12/30/2012- vs. Geard Ajetovic (UNR)
Vlasov will fight again on New Year’s Eve Eve against decent Serbian journeyman Geard Ajetovic in Moscow.
20) Edwin Rodriguez (6-21)
Last Fight: 9/29/2012- TKO8 Jason Escalera (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
According to Gennady Golovkin’s trainer, Rodriguez turned down a huge offer to fight Golovkin.

The Week Ahead: Nothing to report this week.

Super Middleweight: 2012, Nov 5-11

#4 Lucian Bute technically moved up to fight light heavyweight #16 Denis Grachev, and even though both guys were barely over the 168 pound limit, the fight will have no effect here.  See the 175 update for this week for more info.  Suffice it to say here that it was a close fight which Bute managed to win.

Dan’s Top 20
Champ: Andre Ward (47-181-181)
Last Fight: 9/8/2012- TKO10 LHW Champ Chad Dawson
Next Fight: Unknown
Both camps comfirm talks for a February 23 HBO fight with Pavlik.
1) Carl Froch (24-334-334)
Last Fight: 5/26/2012- TKO5 #1 Lucian Bute
Next Fight: 11/17/2012- vs. LHW #11 Yusaf Mack
After the negotiations initially appeared to have failed, Froch eventually secured a fight with Yusaf Mack, afterall.
2) Arthur Abraham (11-159-159)
Last Fight: 8/25/2012- UD12 #4 Robert Stieglitz
Next Fight: 12/15/2012- vs. Mehdi Bouadla (UNR)
Abraham will make a fairly weak follow-up to his big win over Stieglitz.  His opponent is Mehdi Bouadla, who made a brave stand against Kessler before getting stopped fairly early in their 2011 fight.  Since then, Bouadla- essentially a journeyman- has been fighting exclusively nobodies, mostly at middleweight.
3) Mikkel Kessler (11-413-413)
Last Fight: 5/19/2012- KO5 Allan Green (UNR)
Next Fight: 12/8/2012- vs. Brian Magee (UNR)
Kessler fights fringe contender Brian Magee in Herning, Denmark on December 8.
4) Lucian Bute (11-343-343)
Last Fight: 11/3/2012- UD12 LHW #16 Denis Grachev (at LHW)
Next Fight: Unknown Date- vs. #1 Carl Froch
Bute struggled a fair amount in his win over Grachev, and now presumably will have to deal with Froch for a second time.
5) Robert Stieglitz (11-167-167)
Last Fight: 8/25/2012- L(UD12) vs. #6 Arthur Abraham
Next Fight: Unknown
Stieglitz was somewhat busted up in the tough Abraham fight, and so I expect him to take a few months off at least.
6) Thomas Oosthuizen (11-75-123)
Last Fight: 8/2/2012- UD12 Rowland Bryant (UNR)
Next Fight: 11/10/2012- vs. Fulgencio Zuniga (UNR)
Oosthuizen will fight Colombia’s Fulgencio Zuniga in South Africa on November 10.
7) Adonis Stevenson (4-48-48)
Last Fight: 10/12/2012- TKO12 Don George (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Stevenson probably has a shot at Carl Froch due to him at some point, as he is the mandatory challenger for Froch’s belt.  But Froch already has a fight coming up soon with Yusaf Mack, and a contracted fight with Bute likely in March.
8) Kelly Pavlik (4-18-18)
Last Fight: 7/7/2012- UD10 #12 Will Rosinsky
Next Fight: Unknown
Pavlik’s team is currently negotiating a February 23 title shot against Ward on HBO.
9) Sakio Bika (15-47-292)
Last Fight: 6/2/2012- TKO10 Dyah Davis (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
10) Karoly Balzsay (15-15-29)
Last Fight: 4/21/2012- TKO12 #8 Dimitri Sartison
Next Fight: Unknown
Balzsay pulled out of a scheduled alphabet title defense with fringe contender Brian Magee with a back injury.
11) Andy Lee (18-87)
Last Fight: 6/16/2012- L(TKO7) vs. MW#? Julio Cesar Chavez, Jr. (at MW)
Next Fight: Unknown
12) Anthony Dirrell (15-49)
Last Fight: 12/2/2011- TKO4 Renan St. Juste (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Dirrell had been all set for a somewhat goofy vacant title opportunity against the underwhelming Nikola Sjekloca, but Dirrell crashed his motorcycle, breaking an arm and leg.  He’s expected to be out of action until approximately November at the earliest.
13) Will Rosinsky (15-21)
Last Fight: 7/7/2012- L(UD10) vs. Kelly Pavlik (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
14) Mouhamed Ali Ndiaye (15-52)
Last Fight: 5/26/2012- RTD9 Jose Maria Guerrero (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
15) Dimitri Sartison (15-123)
Last Fight: 4/21/2012- L(TKO12) vs. Karoly Balzsay (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Sartison has been medically cleared following his third knee surgery, and is looking to return in December.
16) Jesus Gonzales (5-70)
Last Fight: 2/18/2012- L(KO1) vs. #9 Adonis Stevenson
Next Fight: 12/8/2012- vs. Unknown Opponent
Gonzales will return from 10-month layoff in Calgary this December.  No opponent yet, but since it’s taking place in a nightclub, I can only assume it won’t be anyone spectacular.  The fight has already been bumped back once from a November date.
17) George Groves (4-17)
Last Fight: 7/28/2012- TKO6 Francisco Sierra (UNR)
Next Fight: 12/15/2012- vs. Glen Johnson (UNR)
Groves’s December 15 opponent turned out to be kind of a surprise: former light heavyweight champion Glen Johnson.  Johnson retired just a few months ago, but evidently isn’t ready to keep them hung up yet.  This could be an interesting crossroads fight.
18) James DeGale (4-56)
Last Fight: 10/13/2012- UD12* Hadillah Mohoumadi (UNR)
Next Fight: 12/8/2012- vs. Unknown Opponent
DeGale was very fortunate to walk away from a relatively stay-busy-looking fight with Hadillah Mohoumadi without some sort of blemish being added to his record.  He’s got the talent, but needs to step up the effort.
19) Edwin Rodriguez (5-15)
Last Fight: 9/29/2012- TKO8 Jason Escalera (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Rodriguez is now fighting with Andre Ward………for a chance to fight Kelly Pavlik next.  Just keeping you on your toes.
20) Dyah Davis (5-5)
Last Fight: 6/2/2012- L(TKO10) vs. #9 Sakio Bika
Next Fight: Unknown

The Week Ahead: Four fights to watch for the coming week.  The most competitive-looking matchup kicks off the week on Monday, when one-loss Russian prospect Maxim Vlasov meets hot-headed hard-luck gatekeeper Khoren Gevor, whose most recent punch in the ring was launched at Referee Hans Joachim Karge, who doubled as a lone judge and robbed him in his most recent fight in a club show against Baker Barakat, which he legitimately dominated.

Liverpool gatekeeper Paul Smith returns in his hometown after a year of inactivity to fight total bum Tommy Tolan on Friday.

#6 Thomas Oosthuizen battles Colombian fringe contender Fulgencio Zuniga in South Africa Saturday.

And finally, in other Saturday action, Stanislav Kashtanov- an Ukranian prospect who definitely should be undefeated- fights the actually undefeated Server Yemurlayev.  This is a good cross-town rivalry in both men’s hometown of Donetsk, Ukraine.

Light Heavyweight: 2012, Nov 5-11

Posted in Light Heavyweight, Rankings with tags , , , , , , , on November 13, 2012 by danboxing
#16 Denis Grachev put forth a heck of an effort against Lucian Bute (#4 at 168).  In truth, he fought a whole heck of a lot better than he did in his crowning victory over Ismayl Sillakh, in which he got the stoppage after being dominated for much of the fight.  He was in the fight every step of the way with Bute.  While Bute appeared to be the much sharper puncher, Grachev was able to impose his physical strength and keep Bute backing up for the vast majority of the fight.  I had it 116-112, with a possible margin of 2 rounds in either direction.  All of the judges did a good job and had it within that range.

In the co-feature of the same Montreal card, two fringe contenders whose careers had been flagging lately met, giving one a chance to get back on the right track.  The combatants?  40-year-old Renan St. Juste and once-hyped prospect Allan Green.  Both men are fairly recent former super middleweights- St. Juste in his last fight, Green most recently 2 years ago.  Green put on a gutsy performance, getting dropped and badly hurt in round 4, but bouncing back to win every other round in a competitive fight.  The unfortunate backstory, however, was that Green badly missed weight (the fight was contracted for the 175 pound limit), and payed for the privilege of weighing in at 178 3/4.  This may have helped him bust St. Juste up to the tune of a 7th round stoppage by the doctor, and also may have helped him avoid being hurt worse by St. Juste’s power punching.  As a result, he gets no credit here, as these rankings don’t encompass cruiserweights who beat light heavyweights.

Weight is also a factor in deciding how to treat the main event.  Incredibly, Grachev came in at just 168.5 pounds, while Bute scaled 169.  I can’t see giving Bute full-fledged credit for beating a guy who was practically a super middleweight after presumably draining significantly, especially giving the fairly close margin.  But at the same time, he did technically beat a ranked light heavyweight at light heavyweight, so it’s got to count for something.  In particular, it’s only fair that he be rated ahead of wherever Grachev ends up.  Furthermore, Grachev probably shouldn’t drop too far precisely because of the disadvantages he faced from the contract weight.  The situation is fairly similar to that under which Kessler moved up to face Green, except that Green was a bit bigger, and Grachev a bit better in terms of the rankings.  But then again, Kessler won by early KO, while Bute won by close decision.  When all is said and done, Bute slips into the rankings in Grachev’s former position of #16, causing Grachev and everyone rated below him last week to backtrack one spot.  Grachev’s prior victim, Ismayl Sillakh, exits after 94 consecutive weeks.

Dan’s Top 20 (weeks in current position-weeks in top 10 (if applicable)-weeks in top 20)
Champ: Andre Ward (9-9-9)
Last Fight: 9/8/2012- TKO10 Champ Chad Dawson (at SMW)
Next Fight: Unknown
Ward and Pavlik’s promoters have both confirmed that talks are underway for a February 23 fight on HBO.
1) Chad Dawson (9-336-336)
Last Fight: 9/8/2012- L(TKO10) vs. SMW Champ Andre Ward (at SMW)
Next Fight: Unknown
Rumors of a Dawson-Pascal rematch are now floating around.
2) Bernard Hopkins (9-335-335)
Last Fight: 4/28/2012- L(MD12) vs. #2 Chad Dawson
Next Fight: Unknown
Hopkins is currently non-committal on whether or not he’ll fight again.
3) Jean Pascal (9-177-177)
Last Fight: 5/21/2011- L(UD12) vs. #1 Bernard Hopkins
Next Fight: 12/14/2012- vs. Aleksy Kuziemski
Pascal will come back in December following his long inactivity and hand injury (thus retaining his ranking), with venue and TV problems ensuring that the Cloud fight could not be rescheduled until 2013.  His opponent will be Polish gatekeeper Aleksy Kuziemski.
4) Gabriel Campillo (9-124-124)
Last Fight: 2/18/2012- L*(UD12) vs. #3 Tavoris Cloud (Robbery)
Next Fight: Unknown
It now looks likely that Campillo will reschedule his fight with hot prospect Sergei Kovalev, from which he withdrew with injury this summer.  It looks like the fight will be the main event of a NBC Sports card from Bethlehem Pennsylvania on January 19.
5) Tavoris Cloud (9-167-167)
Last Fight: 2/18/2012- UD12* vs. #4 Gabriel Campillo (Robbery)
Next Fight: 11/24/2012- vs. #9 Karo Murat
The Cloud-Murat fight has been shifted back a week, but it will still rather inexplicably take place in Venezuela.
6) Cornelius White (9-17-47)
Last Fight: 7/14/2012- UD12 #10 Dmitri Sukhotski
Next Fight: Unknown
White is on a tear.  Is he really top-5 good?  I wouldn’t think so, but he proves me wrong every time I feel I might be overrating him.
7) Nathan Cleverly (9-144-144)
Last Fight: 2/25/2012- UD12 Tommy Karpency (UNR)
Next Fight: 11/10/2012- vs. Shawn Hawk (UNR)
Cleverly’s replacement opponent for his Showtime Extreme debut is actually a bit more proven than ill-fated original choice Ryan Coyne.  It’ll be proud Native American and South Dakota prospect Shawn Hawk.
8) Tony Bellew (17-56-56)
Last Fight: 9/8/2012- TKO9 Edison Miranda (UNR)
Next Fight: 11/17/2012- vs. Roberto Feliciano Bolonti (UNR)
Bellew now has an opponent for his appearance on the Froch-Mack undercard: Argentine Champion Roberto Feliciano Bolonti.
9) Karo Murat (9-58-79)
Last Fight: 6/2/2012- TKO7 Sandro Siproshvili (UNR)
Next Fight: 11/24/2012- vs. #5 Tavoris Cloud
See Cloud’s notes, above.
10) Beibut Shumenov (9-120-124)
Last Fight: 6/2/2012- UD12 Enrique Ornelas (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
11) Yusaf Mack (9-124)
Last Fight: 7/7/2012- UD6 Sabou Ballogou (UNR)
Next Fight: 11/17/2012- vs. #1 SMW Carl Froch (at SMW)
In a fairly sudden development, Mack will drop back down to 168 to fight Carl Froch.
12) Isaac Chilemba (9-40)
Last Fight: 9/29/2012- UD8 Rayco Saunders (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Chilemba came in a bit heavy, but performed as expected, shutting out journeyman Rayco Saunders.
13) Vyacheslav Uzelkoff (9-40)
Last Fight: 7/21/2012- W(MD12) vs. Mohamed Belkacem (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
14) Andrzej Fonfara (9-17)
Last Fight: 7/13/2012- UD10* SMW #16 Glen Johnson
Next Fight: 11/16/2012- vs. Tommy Karpency (UNR)
Fonfara will fight journeyman Tommy Karpency in Chicago in mid-November.
15) Jürgen Brähmer (9-29)
Last Fight: 4/21/2012- UD10 Vikapita Meroro (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Here we go again!  An announced Braehmer bout will not go forward as planned.  At least this time there was some notice.  No word on why the Gutknecht fight was scuttled.
16) Lucian Bute (1-1)
Last Fight: 11/3/2012- UD12 #16 Denis Grachev
Next Fight: Unknown Date- vs. SMW #1 Carl Froch (at SMW)
Bute barely beat Grachev, and even more barely did so at light heavyweight, but I’ve still got to rate him. He’ll now fight a rematch with Froch in March or April.
17) Denis Grachev (1-28)
Last Fight: 11/3/2012- L(UD12) vs. SMW #4 Lucian Bute
Next Fight: Unknown
Grachev put forth a valiant effort against a heavy favorite in Bute, even after presumably draining almost all the way to 168.  As a result, his ranking remains mostly intact.
18) Dmitri Sukhotski (1-106)
Last Fight: 7/14/2012- L(UD12) vs. #16 Cornelius White
Next Fight: Unknown
The White loss must be a bitter disappointment for Sukhotski, who had been in line for a shot at an alphabet strap held by Cleverly for some time, but with Cleverly blatantly ducking him to great effect.
19) Mikkel Kessler (1-25)
Last Fight: 5/19/2012- TKO4 Allan Green (UNR)
Next Fight: 12/8/2012- vs. Brian Magee (UNR) (at SMW)
Kessler will fight Irish fringe contender Brian Magee on December 8 in Denmark.  The fight will be at 168 it would seem.
20) Tony Averlant (1-32)
Last Fight: 3/31/2012- L*(SD12) vs. #12 Eduard Gutknecht (Robbery)
Next Fight: 11/9/2012- vs. Lubo Hantak (UNR)
Averlant is scheduled to return against a truly awful Slovakian opponent this weekend.

The Week Ahead: Two mentionable fights on Friday and another four on Saturday, amounting to one of the busiest weeks of the year for any division.

Friday: #20 Tony Averlant fights arguably one of the worst light heavyweights in the world, Slovakia’s Lubo Hantak, in France.  In a much more interesting fight in Liverpool, gatekeepers Ovill McKenzie (originally of Jamaica) and Welshman and former top Cruiserweight contender Enzo Maccarinelli do battle in an attempt to halt a negative trend in one of their careers.  The loser is likely done as anything but an opponent.

Saturday: #7 Nathan Cleverly of Wales ventures to the US for the second time and faces South Dakota prospect Shawn Hawk on the Showtime Extreme-televised undercard of Mares-Moreno.

Another notable Brit, Danny McIntosh, is scheduled to return in his hometown of Norwich against an unnamed opponent.  McIntosh has been out of the ring since he was roughed up by Tony Bellew back in April.

Undefeated South African prospect Ryno Liebenberg will fight Zambian journeyman Donald Kampamba on the Oosthuizen-headlined card in Kempton Park, South Africa for what is being billed as a minor alphabet African title fight.

Finally, fringe contender Nadjib Mohammedi of France will see action in his back yard against low-level Russian journeyman Sergei Beloshapkin (who I have referred to in the past as “Shapkin the Napkin,” due to his tendency to fall apart when hit by contenders like Gabriel Campillo and probably Mohammedi.
