Junior Middleweight: 2012, May 28- Jun 3

Posted in Junior Middleweight, Rankings with tags , , , , , , , on March 13, 2013 by danboxing
Saturday in Tucson, Arizona, gatekeeper Jesus Soto Karass ground out a split decision win over one-loss prospect Said El Harrak.  I expect to watch this fight and will edit this with a more detailed description after doing so.

But the main news in the division this week is very sad.  Just 6 days after signing to fight Canelo on September 15, longtime contender Paul Williams (#8 last week) was involved in a serious motorcycle accident, and is reportedly paralyzed.  It’s my sad duty to remove him from the rankings due to the catastrophic injury.  I expect that I speak for all of my readers when I say we’re praying for him.

Everyone ranked #9 and below last week moves up.  Gabriel Rosado reclaims a spot in the top 10, and Antonio Margarito returns at #20, each having been displaced by the 5/5 Mayweather-Cotto card.

Dan’s Top 20 (Weeks in Current Position-Weeks in Top 10 if applicable-Weeks in Top 20)
Champ: None
1) Saul Alvarez (4-65-80)
Last Fight: 5/5/2012- UD12 Shane Mosley (UNR)
Next Fight: 9/15/2012- vs. Unknown Opponent
Canelo signed to fight Paul Williams, but Williams was paralyzed less than a week later.
2) Carlos Molina (4-47-62)
Last Fight: 3/23/2012- L*(DQ10) vs. #3 James Kirkland (Robbery)
Next Fight: Unknown
Molina has said he’ll appeal his DQ against Kirkland.
3) Cornelius Bundrage (10-95-95)
Last Fight: 6/25/2011- UD12 #11 Sechew Powell
Next Fight: 7/28/2012- vs. #12 Cory Spinks
K9 will give Cory Spinks a rematch on July 28.  K9 won by brutal beatdown last time.
4) Floyd Mayweather, Jr. (4-4-4)
Last Fight: 5/5/2012- UD12* #4 Miguel Cotto
Next Fight: Unknown
Floyd says he’s considering retirement after a tough fight with Cotto.  But more recently, future fights against Pacquiao, Canelo, Khan, Cotto, Guerrero, and Berto/Ortiz have been mentioned.
5) Miguel Cotto (4-104-104)
Last Fight: 5/5/2012- L* (UD12) vs. WW #1 Floyd Mayweather, Jr.
Next Fight: Unknown
Cotto plans to return by the end of the year, and continue fighting for 2 or 3 more years.  Rematches with both Pacquiao and Mayweather appear to be possibilities at some point.
6) Erislandy Lara (4-47-69)
Last Fight: 4/20/2012- TKO1 Ronald Hearns (UNR) (at MW)
Next Fight: Unknown
The WBC ordered an eliminator between Lara and Vanes for a shot at Canelo, but Vanes- true to form- turned it down.  Lara hopes to return in June, and is considering Mundine and Quintana.  He also says he’d meet Victor Ortiz at a 150-pound catchweight on June 23.
7) James Kirkland (4-30-30)
Last Fight: 3/24/2012- W*(DQ10) vs. #6 Carlos Molina (Robbery)
Next Fight: Unknown
Kirkland appeared to be the frontrunner for Canelo’s 9/15 date before Paul Williams got the nod.  Now that Williams is out of commission, we’ll see if Kirkland steps back up to the plate.
8) Alfredo Angulo (1-140-140)
Last Fight: 11/5/2011- L (TKO6) vs. James Kirkland (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Troubling news.  Angulo has been detained by US authorities since at least January.  Apparently his only crime was being here on an expired Visa.  Don’t get me wrong.  I’m in favor of enforcing immigration laws, but to lock a guy up for months on end without so much as a trial?  Awful.  We’re rooting for you, Perro.
9) Ryan Rhodes (1-136-136)
Last Fight: 11/26/2011- W (PTS8) vs. Sergei Khomitski (UNR) (at MW)
Next Fight: 6/16/2012- vs. Sergei Rabchenko (UNR)
After suffering a back injury, Rhodes has rescheduled his fight with Rabchenko for June 16 in Manchester.
10) Gabriel Rosado (1-1-69)
Last Fight: 1/21/2012- TKO5 Jesus Soto Karass (UNR)
Next Fight: 6/1/2013- vs. #19 Sechew Powel
With just less than a month to go before the fight, Sechew Powell has replaced Joel Julio as Rosado’s opponent.
11) Cory Spinks (1-18)
Last Fight: 1/28/2012- UD12 #11 Sechew Powell
Next Fight: 7/28/2012- vs. #3 Cornelius Bundrage
Spinks will have a rematch with #3 K9 Bundrage in San Jose on July 28.  He’s brave for taking it, considering the beating he took last time.
12) Austin Trout (1-69)
Last Fight: 11/11/2011- TKO6 Frank LoPorto (UNR)
Next Fight: 6/2/2012- vs. #13 Delvin Rodriguez
Trout-Rodriguez is now official for June 2 on Showtime.
13) Delvin Rodriguez (1-46)
Last Fight: 12/3/2011- UD10* #9 Pawel Wolak
Next Fight: 6/2/2012- vs. #12 Austin Trout
See Trout’s notes, above.
14) Brian Rose (1-26)
Last Fight: 3/31/2012- UD12 Max Maxwell (UNR)
Next Fight: 6/2/2012- vs. Kris Carslaw (UNR)
In fairness, the British light middleweight scene is extremely thin compared to other divisions, but I can’t say that Rose’s title reign is off to a great start.  He’s defending his title against a second consecutive journeyman that could be called mid-level at best.
15) Shane Mosley (1-4)
Last Fight: 5/5/2012- L (UD12) vs. #2 Saul Alvarez
Next Fight: Unknown
Everybody but Mosley appears to know he’s done, but he still has the resume to hold a top 20 ranking.  Let’s hope he retires soon, though.
16) Vanes Martirosyan (1-52)
Last Fight: 2/4/2012- TKO3 Troy Lowry (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Vanes has become extremely risk averse since his difficult fight with Roman last June, as he has now turned down an eliminator against Lara.
17) Lukas Konecny (1-42)
Last Fight: 4/5/2012- TKO7 Salim Larbi (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
The WBO is looking to make Konecny-Baysangurov happen, and has set 6/4 as the deadline for an agreement to avoid purse bids.
18) Carlos Quintana (1-4)
Last Fight: 5/5/2012- TKO6 Deandre Latimore (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Quintana said he wanted Canelo in the immediate aftermath of his upset TKO of Deandre Latimore, and has since expressed interest in Cotto, as well.
19) Sechew Powell (1-115)
Last Fight: 1/28/2012- L(UD12) vs. Cory Spinks (UNR)
Next Fight: 6/1/2012- vs. #10 Gabriel Rosado
Powell is a semi-short notice replacement for Joel Julio in the NBC Sports-televised bout with Gabriel Rosado.
20) Antonio Margarito (1-1)
Last Fight: 12/3/2011- L (TKO10) vs. #5 Miguel Cotto
Next Fight: 7/7/2012- vs. Unknown Opponent (at MW)
Margarito is expecting to be back in the ring on July 7 after recovering from an achilles injury, and expects to fight at Middleweight.

The Week Ahead: Friday in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, #10 Gabriel Rosado and #19 Sechew Powell face off on NBC Sports Network.

Saturday in Tokyo, gatekeeper Daisuke Nakagawa fights solid journeyman Akio Shibata for Nakagawa’s Japanese title.

Hours later in Manchester, England, #14 and British Champion Brian Rose makes a title defense against one-loss but still largely untested prospect Kris Karslaw.

Finally, even more hours later on the Tarver-Kayode undercard in Vegas, undefeated #12 Austin Trout meets his toughest test yet in #13 Delvin Rodriguez.

Junior Middleweight: 2012, Feb 20-26

Posted in Junior Middleweight, Rankings with tags , , , , , , , on March 5, 2013 by danboxing
In last week’s biggest fight, #13 Paul Williams won a dominant 12 round decision over #17 Middleweight and inactive fringe contender at this weight, Nobuhiro Ishida, in Corpus Christi, Texas.  Both guys are exceptionally tall and rangy, but Williams was vastly better at shortening up and fighting in close.  He capitalized on this advantage by smothering Ishida’s attack while still landing his own shots.  Ishida fought hard, but couldn’t string together enough moments to win any rounds.

In other Saturday action, undefeated Polish prospect Damian Jonak stopped mediocre journeyman Sebastian Skrzypczynki in Raciborz, Poland.

Friday night in Santa Ynez, California, gatekeeper Billy Lyell put up a game effort and w0n nearly his share of rounds, but was edged out by the superior size and fundamental technique of undefeated prospect Jonathan Gonzalez.  Gonzalez won’t benefit from this at 154, though, since he came in at the contract weight of 156 compared to Lyell’s 154.

Williams went a long way toward atoning for his loss to Lara with this performance, rising all the way to #7.  I had to spend about 20 minutes just staring at the records of William and last week’s #7 Alfredo Angulo to try and determine who would claim that spot.  Williams has by far the single best win, over #2 Verno Phillips back in November ’08.  But his quality wins were interrupted by the relatively recent drubbing he took from Erislandy Lara- ranked only #17 at the time.  Angulo lost to a very down-and-out version of James Kirkland who was effectively coming off a devastating upset loss to Ishida, and also was outboxed by Kermit Cintron.  Williams technically owns a win over Cintron, but it was the result of just over 3 rounds that Cintron arguably won anyway, and which I view as a no contest due to a Cintron injury.  And Angulo has a much larger body of quality work at this weight than does Williams.  What tipped the scales for me was a comparison of each man’s last fight.  Angulo was stopped by the guy that was wiped out by Ishida, albeit an inspired version.  Williams dominated the guy that wiped out the guy that Angulo lost to.  So Williams passes Angulo, but can’t overcome Carlos Molina at #6 due in part to Molina having performed better against Lara than did Williams.  Ishida fails to gain consideration for a re-ranking, as he came in a pound over the divisional limit and thus still hasn’t fought at 154 since 2010.  Everyone ranked #7-12 last week drops a spot, including Cory Spinks, who exits the top 10 after just 3 weeks in.

11) Cory Spinks (1-4)
Last Fight: 1/28/2012- UD12 #11 Sechew Powell
Next Fight: Unknown
I cannot confirm that the close unanimous decision verdict over Powell was accurate due to lack of video.  So whether for skill or lack of sunlight, Spinks is very much back in the mix.
12) Austin Trout (1-55)
Last Fight: 11/11/2011- TKO6 Frank LoPorto (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Trout wants Cotto, Rodriguez, Mundine, and Kirkland, and also has apparently mutual interest in fighting Lara.

Next Fight: Unknown
Rodriguez has confirmed that he’ll be staying at 154.

Next Fight: 3/31/2012- vs. Max Maxwell (UNR)
Rose’s first defense of his British title will come in his hometown of Blackpool  against Max Maxwell.  Maxwell is a very mediocre journeyman who just so happens to be the only man to ever beat Rose.
15) Vanes Martirosyan (11-38)
Last Fight: 2/4/2012- TKO3 Troy Lowry (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
We get it, Vanes!  You’re better than a bunch of random journeymen.  How about a test?

Last Fight: 4/16/2011- UD8 Dennis Sharpe (UNR) (at MW)

#18 Demetrius Andrade crushed mid-range journeyman Angel Hernandez at the Mohegan Sun on Friday.  He wasn’t merely jab heavy and dominant the way he was against Brewer.  He came out and crushed Hernandez in just 2 rounds, knocking him down twice in what turned out to be the final round.  This wasn’t a top 50 opponent, so you don’t want to read into it too much, but he could not have looked sharper or more talented than he did.  No changes.

Middleweight: 2012, May 28- Jun 3

Posted in Middleweight, Rankings with tags , , , , , , , on November 21, 2012 by danboxing
Just 6 days after he officially signed to fight Canelo Alvarez, tragedy struck Paul Williams today.  Williams was in a very serious motorcycle crash, and the initial reports are that he is likely paralyzed for life.  I know I speak for all of my readers when I say that our prayers and support are with him.  It is my sad duty to remove him this week.

Now to less significant matters.  Ghanaian gatekeeper Joshua Okine moved up two divisions from welterweight to fight Uruguayan journeyman Rafael Sosa Pintos in Accra, Ghana on Saturday, more-or-less dominating his visitor.

David Lopez, the junior middleweight fringe contender from Mexico, moved up to middleweight, as well, in his first fight in nearly a year, winning a 10-round decision over countryman and veteran journeyman Julio Cesar Garcia in La Paz, Baja California, Mexico.

Williams’ injuries and removal cause everyone rated #14 and below last week to advance one place, allowing Peter Quillin to debut at #20 just in time for his fight with Winky Wright this Saturday.

Champ: Sergio Martinez (111-111-111)
Last Fight: 3/17/2012- RTD11 #3 Matthew Macklin
Next Fight: 9/15/2012- vs. Unknown Opponent
Sergio has signed a contract to fight the Chavez-Lee winner, with 9/15 being the tentative date.  Recent news indicates that the contract is non-binding, but would lead to Chavez being stripped of his alphabet title if he dishonors it.  It also provides that if Lee wins, that fight would be in Argentina.

Adama came up short against Geale, but has nothing to be ashamed of.  He frequently took the #1 contender out of his game plan and looked entirely in his league at that lofty level.
13) Gennady Golovkin (1-50)
Last Fight: 5/12/2012- TKO3 Makoto Fuchigami (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
The explosive Golovkin is climbing the rankings slowly but surely, destroying all that stands in his way.
14) Avtandil Khurtsidze (1-70)
Last Fight: 12/18/2011- W(MD12) vs. Ossie Duran (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
The WBC has ordered Khurtsidze to defend his new goofy color-coded belt against gatekeeper Domenico Spada.
15) Max Bursak (1-70)
Last Fight: 5/4/2012- L (UD12) vs. #6 Hassan N’Dam N’Jikam
Next Fight: Unknown
16) Demetrius Andrade (1-41)
Last Fight: 5/5/2012- KO1 Rudy Cisneros (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Andrade showed chilling power in destroying easy mark Cisneros.
17) Darren Barker (1-33)
Last Fight: 10/1/2011- L(KO11) vs. Champ Sergio Martinez
Next Fight: Unknown
Barker bowed out of opportunities to fight Murray and Pirog, and now we have a possible reason as he has apparently been injured for a while, needs surgery, and is done until the fall.
18) Billi Godoy (1-32)
Last Fight: 4/13/2012- UD10 Carlos Baldomir (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Godoy needs a lot of improvement if he’s going to fight his relative peers in the rankings.  He had more than a little trouble with crude and old Carlos Baldomir.
19) Nobuhiro Ishida (1-13)
Last Fight: 5/1/2012- L(UD12) vs. #8 Dmitry Pirog
Next Fight: Unknown
Barely challenged Pirog at all, but has enough mileage left on the Kirkland upset to remain ranked for the moment.
20) Peter Quillin (1-1)
Last Fight: 11/5/2011- TKO6 Craig McEwan (UNR)
Next Fight: 6/2/2012- vs. Winky Wright (UNR)
Quillin will fight former Champion at 154 Winky Wright this weekend.

The Week Ahead: Newly-minted #20 contender Peter Quillin takes on heavily inactive former Junior Middleweight Champion Winky Wright in Carson, California on Saturday.

Middleweight: 2012, Feb 20-26

The most important middleweight fight of the weekend was between #15 Garth Wood and fellow Australian Sam Soliman on Sunday.  Soliman won a comfortable decision, and immediately establishes himself near the top 10, settling in at #11.  It was a tricky decision as to whether or not to promote him past Mundine, as well.  Mundine both lost to Wood and beat him, which would seem to be advantage Soliman, but he is literally the only person to beat Daniel Geale, which is a big big tiebreaker.  Wood exits the rankings, as his win over Mundine now appears to be a definite fluke.

Domincan prospect Fernando Guerrero smacked up Canadian journeyman Jason Naugler en route to a 4th round TKO, in what actually turned out to be a super middleweight fight.

Paul Williams dominated #17 Nobuhiro Ishida in Corpus Christi, Texas on HBO.  It was at 154, but Ishida came in a pound heavy.  I’ll treat the fight in more detail in my 154 update for this week, since the fight was at its core a junior middleweight fight.  It does have significant repercussions here,  as well.  To wit, Ishida is obviously subject to any negative effects of the loss since he was technically a middleweight in the fight.  Williams was something like a mid-teens contender a division to the south after having lost to a #17-ranked Erislandy Lara, and that is enough- in conjunction with the dominant nature of the defeat- to throw Ishida’s good but thin resume into doubt.  In a very crowded field, he slips just out of the rankings.  Williams returns to the rankings here at #14.  This was a hard thing to do.  Williams is still completely inactive at middleweight, but in showing up heavy and holding a middleweight ranking, Ishida gave Williams a foothold again nevertheless.  The precedent is clear: Manny Pacquiao earned a ranking at 154 by beating Antonio Margarito- a credible fringe contender at that weight- despite weighing well under the welterweight limit, himself.  I think in this case, the mere fact that Ishida didn’t make 154 wouldn’t have been enough for me to re-rank Williams, but the fact that he was both technically a middleweight on that night and that he held a middleweight ranking forms the necessary nexus.

As a result of Soliman and Williams’ entry into the rankings, #11 and 12 Osumanu Adama and Marco Antonio Rubio each decline one position.  Khurtsidze and Bursak each fall 2 spots to #15 and #16, respectively.  Golovkin drops back 1 place to #17, while everyone else stands pat.

4) Julio Cesar Chavez, Jr. (3-38-56)
Last Fight: 2/4/2012- UD12 #10 Marco Antonio Rubio
Next Fight: Unknown
Chavez’s team is already working on his next fight, and they have June 16, Texas, and Andy Lee in mind.  Margarito has also been floated, but the WBC is unlikely to approve that fight.
5) Felix Sturm (3-440-440)
Last Fight: 12/2/2012- Draw (SD12) vs. Martin Murray (UNR)
Next Fight: 4/13/2012- vs. Sebastian Zbik (UNR)
A few weeks ago, it looked like Sturm would be promoting Zbik’s fight with Proksa.  Now he’s fighting Zbik instead, after Zbik showed his disgust for Sturm by pulling out.
6) Hassan N’Dam N’Jikam (3-69-69)
Last Fight: 4/2/2011- UD12 Giovanni Lorenzo (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Just as he appeared to have a fight lined up with Pirog, the Russian came down with a shoulder injury.
7) Martin Murray (3-12-12)
Last Fight: 12/2/2011- Draw(SD12) vs. #3 Felix Sturm

8) Dmitry Pirog (12-82-82)
Last Fight: 9/25/2011- RTD10 Gennady Martirosyan (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Pirog has injured his shoulder, scuttling a prospective fight with N’Dam.  No word on how bad it is.
9) Sebastian Sylvester (12-341-341)
Last Fight: 10/1/2011- L(RTD3) vs. #9 Grzegorz Proksa
Next Fight: Unknown
Sylvester may be getting long in the tooth after being destroyed by Proksa.
10) Anthony Mundine (3-3-56)
Last Fight: 10/19/2011- UD12 Rigoberto Alvarez (UNR) (at JMW)
Next Fight: Unknown
11) Sam Soliman (1-1)

Last Fight: 10/6/2011- TKO9 Roman Karmazin (UNR)
Next Fight: 2/29/2012- vs. #1 Daniel Geale
Adama gets a shot at real prominence when he fights the most accomplished Middleweight not named Sergio Martinez on leap day in Tasmania.
13) Marco Antonio Rubio (1-56)
Last Fight: 2/4/2012- L(UD12) vs. #7 Julio Cesar Chavez
Next Fight: Unknown
Rubio renewed his relevance with what was officially an upset over Lemieux, but the more proven Chavez proved to be a prospect too far.
14) Paul Williams (1-1)
Last Fight: 2/18/2012- UD12 #17 Nobuhiro Ishida (as JMW)
Next Fight: Unknown
15) Avtandil Khurtsidze (1-56)
Last Fight: 12/18/2011- W(MD12) vs. Ossie Duran (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
The WBC has ordered Khurtsidze to defend his new goofy color-coded belt against gatekeeper Domenico Spada.
16) Max Bursak (1-56)
Last Fight: 12/17/2012- TKO3 Laatekwei Hammond (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Bursak is the mandatory contender for whatever title Pirog holds, but Pirog appears to be interested in fighting someone else first.
17) Gennady Golovkin (10-36)
Last Fight: 12/9/2011- KO1 Lajuan Simon (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Golovkin can’t get anyone to fight him.
18) Demetrius Andrade (12-27)
Last Fight: 2/10/2012- KO2 Angel Hernandez (UNR) (at JMW)
Next Fight: Unknown
With original opponent Derek Ennis getting sick 2 days before the fight, Andrade instead dispatched journeyman Angel Hernandez on ESPN2.

Barker turned down an offer to fight Martin Murray.
20) Billi Godoy (12-18)
Last Fight: 11/12/2011- TKO1 Luciano Silva (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown

The Week Ahead: Deandre Latimore, who was removed from the rankings at 154 recently for missing weight for 18 months, will fight on ShoBox this Friday.  Not being a title fight of any kind, the fight will probably be over the junior middleweight limit again, but the fighters could surprise me.  Latimore will be taking on Colombian journeyman Milton Nunez in Vegas.  Nunez is unproven, having never beaten anybody.  He has only lost to good opposition, however, so he may or may not be truly weak.

The following night in Stuttgart, fringe contending German undefeated prospect Dominik Britsch fights Spanish journeyman Roberto Santos.  Despite the fact that there are several better options than Britsch and a whole helluva lot of better options than Santos, this is somehow being used to fill the vacant European Union title.

Junior Middleweight: 2011, Jul 11-17

Posted in Junior Middleweight, Rankings with tags , , , , , , , on August 17, 2011 by danboxing
Premium cable subscribers witnessed two rather shocking results at 154.  On Showtime’s co-feature to the Rios-Antillon match, #19 Carlos Molina dominated #7 Kermit Cintron over 10 rounds, winning 8 on all the official cards and all 10 on mine.  A matter of minutes later, #17 Erislandy Lara- who was lucky to escape with a draw against Molina on Friday Night Fights earlier this year- was arguably less dominant but did even more damage in beating up #6 Paul Williams convincingly.  The official judges disagreed with that assessment, but were so obviously corrupt that they will receive no further mention here other than to say that all three will be suspended.

Lara is the week’s biggest winner.  His win over Williams places him at #3 ahead of Angulo but still behind Bundrage.  Molina’s big win also places him in solid position as he checks in at #6 just barely behind Cotto and ahead of Wolak.  The week’s losers take a huge tumble.  Williams finds his place among fighters that have big wins in the past but have established recent patterns of bad losses.  Accordingly, he finds himself just ahead of Shane Mosley and Cory Spinks as he nestles in behind Manny Pacquiao at #14.  Cintron plummets even further, barely maintaining a ranking as he slips below Yuri Foreman and into the #20 slot.

For Comparision, here are the current Ring ratings for the division:
Champ: Vacant
1) Miguel Cotto
2) Alfredo Angulo
3) Saul Alvarez
4) Vanes Martirosyan
5) Erislandy Lara
6) Carlos Molina
7) Cornelius Bundrage
8) Pawel Wolak
9) Sergei Dzinziruk
10) Austin Trout

Dan’s Top 20 (Weeks in Current Position-Weeks in Top 10 if applicable-Weeks in Top 20)
Champ: None
1) Saul Alvarez (4-19-34)
Last Fight: 6/18/2011- UD12 #7 Ryan Rhodes
Next Fight: 9/17/2011- vs. Unknown Opponent
Canelo will return on 9/17, apparently against either Ricardo Mayorga, Alfonso Gomez, or Vanes Martirosyan.
2) Cornelius Bundrage (3-49-49)
Last Fight: 6/25/2011- UD12 #11 Sechew Powell
Next Fight: Unknown
DeAndre Latimore is K9’s mandatory, but K9 appears to prefer a voluntary next.  He wants to fight Canelo at some point.
3) Erislandy Lara (1-1-23)
Last Fight: 7/9/2011- L*(MD12) vs. #6 Paul Williams
Next Fight: Unknown
After originally losing out to Nobuhiro Ishida, Lara will fight Williams after Ishida was bumped by HBO.
4) Alfredo Angulo (1-94-94)
Last Fight: 7/17/2010- TKO1 #8 Joachim Alcine
Next Fight: 8/20/2011- vs. Unknown Opponent
We finally have a return date for Angulo: August 20.  Opponent to be determined.
5) Miguel Cotto (1-58-58)
Last Fight: 3/12/2011- TKO12 Ricardo Mayorga (UNR)
Next Fight: 12/3/2011- vs. Antonio Margarito (UNR)
Cotto-Margarito II now appears to be set again, this time for December 3.
6) Carlos Molina (1-1-16)
Last Fight: 7/9/2011- UD10 #7 Kermit Cintron
Next Fight: Unknown
Had absolutely no trouble with the highly-ranked Cintron, and now he or his promoter have challenged basically everybody: Lara, Cotto, Canelo, Trout, K9, and Dzinziruk.
7) Pawel Wolak (1-18-18)
Last Fight: 3/12/2011- RTD6 #5 Yuri Foreman
Next Fight: 7/15/2011- vs. Delvin Rodriguez (UNR)
The Dzinziruk negotiations proved fruitless, as Wolak will now fight prospect Delvin Rodriguez on Friday Night Fights in mid-July.
8) Ryan Rhodes (4-90-90)
Last Fight: 6/18/2011- L(UD12) vs. #8 Saul Alvarez
Next Fight: Unknown
Rhodes’ stock is significantly diminished after being dominated by Alvarez, but he still has a noticeably more complete resume than #9 Arron and thus only slides one position after the defeat.
9) Prince Arron (9-9-9)
Last Fight: 5/13/2011- TKO12 #14 Sam Webb
Next Fight: Unknown
Arron’s dramatic upset victory earned him the British title and a place in the top 10.
10) Austin Trout (5-5-23)
Last Fight: 6/11/2011- UD12 David Lopez (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Appears all but set to fight MW #10 Anthony Mundine, but Mundine has yet to sign.
11) Sechew Powell (5-69)
Last Fight: 6/25/2011- L(UD12) vs. #3 Cornelius Bundrage
Next Fight: Unknown
Put forth a solid effort in a losing cause against Bundrage, and still has the bona  fides to hold onto his #11 spot.
12) Gabriel Rosado (5-23)
Last Fight: 2/26/2011- TKO12 Jamaal Davis (UNR)
Next Fight: 7/15/2011- vs. Ayi Bruce (UNR)
Allen Conyers pulled out last-minute with an injury, and Ayi Bruce has stepped up as the 3rd scheduled opponent for Friday’s date.  Bruce, a gatekeeper, is actually an improvement on Conyers.
13) Manny Pacquiao (5-23)
Last Fight: 5/7/2011- UD12 #15 Shane Mosley (at WW)
Next Fight: 11/12/2011- vs. LW Champ Juan Manuel Marquez (at WW)
Pacquiao had already nearly finished signing a fight with lightweight champion and rival Juan Manuel Marquez before the Mosley debacle even went down.  Unfortunately the talk is that the fight will be at a 144-pound catchweight.  This fight is a natural for 140 pounds, but Pacquiao wants to drag Marquez up because he has the proven ability to carry the weight better than the lightweight.  It’s a damn shame, because this could have been a good challenge at the right weight.
14) Paul Williams (1-23)
Last Fight: 7/9/2011- W*(MD12) vs. #17 Erislandy Lara
Next Fight: Unknown
Williams’ robbery over Lara was so blatant and so ridiculous that even the most jaded people in boxing are laughing it off.  Williams took a beating, and has got to think seriously about his next move.
15) Cory Spinks (1-23)
Last Fight: 6/25/2011- UD10 Shakir Ashanti (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Dominated sacrificial lamb Ashanti.  We’ll see if he will try to climb the ladder again now that he’s back in the win column.
16) Shane Mosley (1-23)
Last Fight: 5/7/2011- L(UD12) vs. #12 Manny Pacquiao (at WW)
Next Fight: Unknown
My fervent hope is that the used-up Mosley retires well before I have to remove him for inactivity in September.
17) Vanes Martirosyan (1-6)
Last Fight: 6/4/2011- TKO7 Saul Roman (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Vanes is one of three candidates in the running for Canelo’s September return, and is the best of the three.
18) Grady Brewer (4-4)
Last Fight: 6/17/2011- TKO4 JMW #20 Fernando Guerrero
Next Fight: Unknown
For a guy that’s often considered a journeyman, Brewer has compiled a nice little resume with the Guerrero win.
19) Yuri Foreman (1-93)
Last Fight: 3/12/2011- L (RTD6) vs. Pawel Wolak (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
What looked like a relatively easy fight turned into a disaster for Foreman as he was battered to a corner stoppage after six rounds with fringe contender/prospect Pawel Wolak.  The stick-and-move boxer may have lost a step to a recurring knee injury, and we’ll see whether or not he’s finished as a serious contender.
20) Kermit Cintron (1-111)
Last Fight: 7/9/2011- L(UD10) vs. #19 Carlos Molina
Next Fight: Unknown
Appears washed-up after being dominated by fringe contender Molina.

The Week Ahead:  Two nice matchups on Friday: in Philly, #12 Gabriel Rosado takes on last-minute replacement opponent (but still decent gatekeeper) Ayi Bruce, while in New York #7 Pawel Wolak battles solid gatekeeper Delvin Rodriguez in the Friday Night Fights main event on ESPN2.

6) Paul Williams (3-22-22)
Last Fight: 11/20/2010- L (KO2) vs. MW Champ Sergio Martinez (at MW)
Next Fight: 7/9/2011- vs. #17 Erislandy Lara
Williams will now take on Erislandy Lara after HBO nixed Ishida.
7) Kermit Cintron (3-110-110)
Last Fight: 5/8/2010- L (TD4) vs. MW #2 Paul Williams
Next Fight: 7/9/2011- vs. #19 Carlos Molina
Now apparently has an opponent for the 7/9 Showtime card in sturdy #18 Carlos Molina.
8) Ryan Rhodes (3-89-89)
Last Fight: 6/18/2011- L(UD12) vs. #8 Saul Alvarez
Next Fight: Unknown
Rhodes’ stock is significantly diminished after being dominated by Alvarez, but he still has a noticeably more complete resume than #9 Arron and thus only slides one position after the defeat.
9) Prince Arron (8-8-8)
Last Fight: 5/13/2011- TKO12 #14 Sam Webb
Next Fight: Unknown
Arron’s dramatic upset victory earned him the British title and a place in the top 10.
10) Austin Trout (4-4-22)
Last Fight: 6/11/2011- UD12 David Lopez (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
An impressive victory over David Lopez in enemy territory has Trout on a steep upward career trajectory.
11) Sechew Powell (4-68)
Last Fight: 6/25/2011- L(UD12) vs. #3 Cornelius Bundrage
Next Fight: Unknown
Put forth a solid effort in a losing cause against Bundrage, and still has the bona  fides to hold onto his #11 spot.
12) Gabriel Rosado (4-22)
Last Fight: 2/26/2011- TKO12 Jamaal Davis (UNR)
Next Fight: 7/15/2011- vs. Allen Conyers (UNR)
Harry Joe Yorgey was injured in training, and recent Carlos Molina victim Allen Conyers has quickly stepped in to take his place.
13) Manny Pacquiao (4-22)
14) Cory Spinks (4-22)
Last Fight: 6/25/2011- UD10 Shakir Ashanti (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Dominated sacrificial lamb Ashanti.  We’ll see if he will try to climb the ladder again now that he’s back in the win column.
15) Shane Mosley (4-22)

16) Vanes Martirosyan (4-5)
Last Fight: 6/4/2011- TKO7 Saul Roman (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
I still don’t view him as highly as a lot of people do because he got handled by Kassim Ouma a while back, but he’s earned at least this much respect after displaying his handspeed, power, and resiliency against Roman.
17) Erislandy Lara (4-22)
Last Fight: 3/25/2011- Draw (MD10) vs. Carlos Molina (UNR)
Next Fight: 7/9/2011- vs. #6 Paul Williams
After originally losing out to Nobuhiro Ishida, Lara will fight Williams after Ishida was bumped by HBO.
18) Grady Brewer (3-3)
Last Fight: 6/17/2011- TKO4 JMW #20 Fernando Guerrero
Next Fight: Unknown
For a guy that’s often considered a journeyman, Brewer has compiled a nice little resume with the Guerrero win.
19) Carlos Molina (3-15)
Last Fight: 4/29/2011- TKO7 Allen Conyers (UNR)
Next Fight: 7/9/2011- vs. #7 Kermit Cintron
His busy schedule and near-victory over Erislandy Lara has earned him a big fight with Cintron for the Rios-Antillon undercard.
20) Yuri Foreman (3-92)
Last Fight: 3/12/2011- L (RTD6) vs. Pawel Wolak (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
What looked like a relatively easy fight turned into a disaster for Foreman as he was battered to a corner stoppage after six rounds with fringe contender/prospect Pawel Wolak.  The stick-and-move boxer may have lost a step to a recurring knee injury, and we’ll see whether or not he’s finished as a serious contender.

The Week Ahead:  Two high-quality fights can be found this week on dueling premium cable broadcasts.  On Showtime, #7 Kermit Cintron battles #19 Carlos Molina as he looks to bounce back from the awkward “loss” to Paul Williams over a year ago.  This will be the co-feature for the Rios-Antillon main event.  Meanwhile on HBO, #6 Paul Williams looks to rebound from his own ugly last fight after being knocked out cold by Middleweight Champion Sergio Martinez in November by fighting #17 Erislandy Lara, a Cuban prospect recently diminished somewhat by his loss-leaning draw against, well, Carlos Molina.  Needless to say, the ratings will be different for next week’s update.
