One-loss Kiwi prospect Robert Berridge lived up to his “butcher” nickname on Saturday, chopping down overpowered fellow one-loss prospect Rogerio Damasco of Brazil with big right hands to score two knockdowns and end it by the end of the first, when the unproven Brazilian’s corner stepped up to call it off.  No changes this week.

Dan’s Top 20 (weeks in current position-weeks   in top 10 (if applicable)-weeks in top 20)
Champ: Andre Ward (96-96-96)
Last Fight: 11/16/2013- UD12 #15 Edwin Rodriguez (as SMW)
Next Fight: Unknown
Ward lost an arbitration with his promoter, but it sounds like the rift between the two is far from solved.  Kessler is the latest guy to renew a stated desire to fight him.
1) Adonis Stevenson (57-57-57)
Last Fight: 5/24/2014- UD12 #6 Andrzej Fonfara
Next Fight: Unknown
Stevenson is very likely to fight Bernard Hopkins next, though there have been no negotiations that I’m aware of yet.
2) Bernard Hopkins (96-422-422)
Last Fight: 4/19/2014- W (SD12*) vs. Beibut Shumenov (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Hopkins is considering leaving Golden Boy.  This would give him free choice between Stevenson, Kovalev, or anyone else, really.  Mohammedi is now technically his mandatory, but we’ll see if they find some way around that.
3) Jean Pascal (25-25-25)
Last Fight: 1/18/2014- UD12 #16 Lucian Bute
Next Fight: Unknown
Pascal is pencilled in for a September fight, and perhaps one more before the end of the year.  There is currently talk of Tavoris Cloud being the September opponent.  That’s a significant step up from Sean Monaghan, who had been the odds-on favorite to fight Pascal on that date.
4) Sergey Kovalev (25-77-77)
Last Fight: 3/29/2014- KO7 #15 Cedric Agnew
Next Fight: 8/2/2014- vs. Blake Caparello (UNR)
Kovalev is back on August 2 against apparently one of the few guys willing to fight him- Australian undefeated prospect Blake Caparello.
5) Tony Bellew (3-143-143)
Last Fight: 3/15/2014- KO12 Valery Brudov (UNR) (at CW)
Next Fight: 7/12/2014- vs. Julio Cesar Dos Santos (UNR) (at CW)
Bellew’s July 12 opponent has been announced as Brazilian 2-loss fringe prospect Julio Cesar Dos Santos, who will basically just be extending his training camp after an aborted fight with Thabiso Mchunu.
6) Andrzej Fonfara (3-47-104)
Last Fight: 5/24/2014- L (UD12) vs. #1 Adonis Stevenson
Next Fight: Unknown
See Kovalev’s notes, above.
7) Gabriel Campillo (3-211-211)
Last Fight: 5/9/2014- TKO7 Ricky Pow (UNR)
Next Fight: 8/1/2014- vs. #13 Thomas Williams, Jr.
This could be the start of Campillo’s resurgence, or the continuation of his decline.  He’ll fight up-and-comer Thomas Williams, Jr. on Friday Night Fights, August 1.
8) Tavoris Cloud (3-254-254)
Last Fight: 9/28/2013- L (TKO7) vs. #1 Adonis Stevenson
Next Fight: Unknown
A September 27 fight with Pascal is a possibility.
9) Nathan Cleverly (3-231-231)
Last Fight: 5/17/2013- TKO2 Shawn Corbin (UNR) (at CW)
Next Fight: 7/12/2014- vs. Alejandro Valori (UNR)
Cleverly looked good against Corbin in his cruiserweight debut.  He’ll keep his ranking here until he schedules a cruiserweight fight for after August 17 (the anniversary of his last fight in this division), or until that date passes, whichever comes first.  He will fight next on July 12, when he takes on Argentine gatekeeper Alejandro Valori at the 200 pound limit.  Valori is a solid performer on the South American scene, but has never fought outside Argentina.  If he gets by that, Bellew-Cleverly II is being targeted for November.
10) Isaac Chilemba (3-3-127)
Last Fight: 3/15/2014- UD10 Denis Grachev (UNR)
Next Fight: 8/2/2014- vs. Cory Cummings (UNR)
Chilemba will fight on the Kovalev-Caparello card on August 2, taking on mid-level journeyman Cory Cummings in a stay-busy fight.
11) Jürgen Brähmer (3-116)
Last Fight: 6/7/2014- UD12 Roberto Feliciano Bolonti (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Braehmer looked solid for 11 of the 12 rounds against Bolonti.  It’s said that he aspires to a Hopkins fight.
12) Karo Murat (3-37)
Last Fight: 10/26/2013- L (UD12) vs. #2 Bernard Hopkins
Next Fight: Unknown
Murat wants Braehmer, his former stablemate, but is now without a promoter, which probably means Sauerland isn’t falling all over themselves to make that fight.
13) Thomas Williams, Jr. (3-24)
Last Fight: 4/24/2014- TKO3 Enrique Ornelas (UNR)
Next Fight: 8/1/2014- vs. #7 Gabriel Campillo
See Campillo’s notes, above.
14) Cedric Agnew (3-65)
Last Fight: 6/27/2014- RTD2 Shannon Miller (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
After taking a risk against Kovalev and coming up short, I can only assume that his prospects for a regional title bout against Dudchenko and a IBF eliminator against Sukhotsky might both be out the window at least for the moment.
15) Edwin Rodriguez (3-52)
Last Fight: 11/16/2013- L (UD12) vs. Champ Andre Ward
Next Fight: Unknown
Rodriguez was scheduled to fight Marcus Johnson on May 24, but Johnson quickly withdrew.
16) Hadillah Mohoumadi (3-54)
Last Fight: 11/30/2013- TKO5 Bartlomiej Grafka (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
17) Cornelius White (3-134)
Last Fight: 1/24/2014- L (TKO1) vs. Thomas Williams, Jr. (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Never blessed with big-time promotional or managerial ties, White has risked becoming a permanent opponent with his last two losses.
18) Eleider Alvarez (3-76)
Last Fight: 5/24/2014- UD10 Alexander Johnson (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
There are rumors springing up in Russia of Alvarez fighting Dmitry Sukhotsky on July 19 in Quebec.
19) Lucian Bute (3-88)
Last Fight: 1/18/2014- L (UD12) vs. Jean Pascal (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Bute wants his contractually-guaranteed rematch with Pascal, a fight that appears tentatively planned for late in the year.  He recently parted ways with his long-time trainer, and says he’s in no hurry to get back in the ring.
20) Dmitry Sukhotsky (3-3)
Last Fight: 6/4/2014- UD12 Joey Vegas (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
I can’t find a video anywhere, but Sukhotsky’s win over Joey Vegas in Russia was suspiciously close.

The Week Ahead
Thursday
Umberto Savigne vs. Jeff Lacy; Miami, Florida; FS1 (US)
Savigne is a one-loss Cuban prospect who is roughly at about the top 25-30 level, but hasn’t made 175 since March of last year.  Not only that, but he failed a drug test for that fight, though for the life of me I can’t find any reporting on what exactly he tested positive for.  Lacy was once a serious contender, but he’s all kinds of shot at this point, and has been for a while.  Lacy last beat a fighter that was even kinda good back in April 2009, when he won a questionable decision against Otis Griffin.  Since then, he’s lost to someone named Dhafir Smith (2010) and made a fairly shot Roy Jones look fantastic in late 2009.  Savigne should cut through him like butter.

Ranked contenders Tony Bellew and Nathan Cleverly are in action, but their fights are both at cruiserweight and will only be mentioned there unless they happen to affect the rankings here.

Light Heavyweight: 2014, Jun 30- Jul 6

#14 Cedric Agnew got an easy night on Friday in Houston against hopelessly outmatched very low-level veteran journeyman Shannon Miller, who failed to answer the bell for the 2nd round.  For what it’s worth, Agnew came in at 176.  No changes.

10) Isaac Chilemba (2-2-126)
Last Fight: 3/15/2014- UD10 Denis Grachev (UNR)
Next Fight: 8/2/2014- vs. Unknown Opponent
Chilemba looked very very sharp in dominating a game Denis Grachev, and might soon be in line for a shot at Adonis Stevenson. He’s coming back on the Rios-Chaves undercard on August 2, but no opponent yet.
11) Jürgen Brähmer (2-115)
Last Fight: 6/7/2014- UD12 Roberto Feliciano Bolonti (UNR)

The Week Ahead
Saturday
Robert Berridge vs. Rogerio Damasco; Manukau, New Zealand; Sky Arena (NZ)
Robbie “the Butcher” is a veteran prospect of some note, whose only loss was to Blake Caparello.  Damasco, from Brazil, is a one-loss prospect in his own right, and his only career loss was to a fellow undefeated in Isidro Ranoni Prieto earlier this year in Argentina.  That was the only real fighter he’s been in with, unfortunately, so Berridge has to be the heavy favorite, as if the location of the fight wasn’t enough of a clue.

Light Heavyweight: 2014, Feb 24- Mar 2

Posted in Light Heavyweight, Rankings with tags , , , , , , , on June 20, 2014 by danboxing
The scheduled fight between undefeated Atlanta prospect Michael Seals and Lester Gonzalez did not come off as scheduled in Laughlin, Nevada on Friday, but there was a good fight I forgot to advertise that did.  In Moore Park, Australia, prospect Robert Berridge of New Zealand was in a rematch with Kerry Foley.  Foley was a low-level fringe prospect when, in 2011, he snatched a majority draw with Berridge, who was then a 10-0 undefeated, though untested, prospect himself.  Since then, Foley has gone nearly 30 months without a fight, while Berridge has put himself at or near the top of the South Pacific scene.

The fight was fairly brutal.  Neither guy showed a great deal of defense, but both were excellent at delivering punishing bombs.  Berridge was pulling ahead on the cards by all rights, as he was applying consistent pressure and consistent work, but Foley was able to assert himself in spurts, usually hurting Berridge when he did.  It was pretty even through 5.  In the 6th, Foley was hurt and appeared on the verge of being stopped by Berridge, but pulled a perfect right hand out of the bag to drop his antagonist.  Berridge came back strong and probably won the round outside of the knockdown.  Berridge returned the favor, dropping Foley to a knee in the 7th, though that round was competitive as well.  It was an excellent two-way slugfest, though by the 9th it appeared Foley had given all he had and was just looking to hang around.  That brought us to the 10th, when one of the best of Berridge’s many brutal body shots landed flush and caused Foley to take a knee again.  This time his corner quite correctly asked referee Charlie Lucas to call a halt for a 10th round TKO.

This does nothing for the Butcher’s ranking, since Foley is proven- to the extent he’s proven at all- only against Berridge himself, but it sure was a fun fight.

Dan’s Top 20 (weeks in current position-weeks in top 10 (if applicable)-weeks in top 20)
Champ: Andre Ward (77-77-77)
Last Fight: 11/16/2013- UD12 #15 Edwin Rodriguez (as SMW)
Next Fight: Unknown
Ward says his manager is working on his next fight despite his lawsuit against promoter Dan Goossen.  He had indicated interest in Golovkin, but the Kazakh’s own trainer recently said his fighter is not ready for that fight.
1) Adonis Stevenson (38-38-38)
Last Fight: 11/30/2013- TKO6 #6 Tony Bellew
Next Fight: 5/24/2014- vs. #6 Andrzej Fonfara
According to Ringtv.com, Stevenson-Fonfara will most likely land on May 24.  After that, it looks like the Kovalev fight will happen in late 2014.
2) Bernard Hopkins (77-403-403)
Last Fight: 10/26/2013- UD12 Karo Murat (UNR)
Next Fight: 4/19/2014- vs. Beibut Shumenov (UNR)
Hopkins will fight Shumenov in mid-April at the D.C. Armory in Washington.
3) Jean Pascal (6-6-6)
Last Fight: 1/18/2014- UD12 #16 Lucian Bute
Next Fight: Unknown
Pascal appears to be fully back from his 2 years in the desert, figuratively speaking, having dominated an apparently shopworn Bute.
4) Sergey Kovalev (6-58-58)
Last Fight: 11/30/2013- TKO2 Ismayl Sillakh (UNR)
Next Fight: 3/29/2014- vs. #15 Cedric Agnew
Kovalev is likely to fight Stevenson in late 2014, and has a March 29 fight coming up in Atlantic City with Cedric Agnew.
5) Chad Dawson (6-404-404)
Last Fight: 6/8/2013- L(TKO1) vs. SMW #6 Adonis Stevenson
Next Fight: Unknown
Dawson is now a promotional free agent, and is looking to sign with a top promoter to start rebuilding after a rough year.  He says he is interested in a Stevenson rematch.  Prospects for another occasionally-discussed rematch- with Jean Pascal- increased recently with word that Pascal’s trainer offered Dawson a contract.
6) Andrzej Fonfara (6-28-85)
Last Fight: 12/6/2013- KO2 Samuel Miller (UNR)
Next Fight: 5/24/2014- vs. #1 Adonis Stevenson
May 24 looks likely for Fonfara-Stevenson.
7) Tony Bellew (6-124-124)
Last Fight: 11/30/2013- L (TKO6) vs. #1 Adonis Stevenson
Next Fight: 3/15/2014- vs. Valery Brudov (UNR) (at CW)
Bellew plans a move to cruiserweight, and his first fight there is scheduled for March 15 in Liverpool, against Valery Brudov.
8) Gabriel Campillo (6-192-192)
Last Fight: 8/16/2013- L (KO9) vs. #14 Andrzej Fonfara
Next Fight: Unknown
Campillo might be on his way to deserved obscurity after being robbed of deserved prominence for so much of his career.  He still has plenty of boxing skill, but his will might be fading just a bit.  For anyone who is wondering he says he plans to make another push for a title, rather than retiring.
9) Tavoris Cloud (6-235-235)
Last Fight: 9/28/2013- L (TKO7) vs. #1 Adonis Stevenson
Next Fight: Unknown
Cloud should probably get himself back in the win column at some point.
10) Nathan Cleverly (6-212-212)
Last Fight: 8/17/2013- L (TKO4) vs. #3 Sergey Kovalev
Next Fight: Unknown
Cleverly’s cruiserweight debut is once again delayed by what’s being called a minor injury.  His promoter says he intends to schedule him another fight very soon.
11) Isaac Chilemba (6-108)
Last Fight: 11/16/2013- UD8 Michael Gbenga (UNR)
Next Fight: 3/15/2014- vs. Denis Grachev (UNR)
Chilemba is in the US, training for a March 15 bout with fringe contender Grachev.
12) Jürgen Brähmer (6-97)
Last Fight: 12/14/2013- UD12 Marcus Oliveira (UNR)
Next Fight: 4/5/2014- vs. Enzo Maccarinelli (UNR)
Braehmer returns April 5 in Rostock, Germany against moderately resurgent Welshman Enzo Maccarinelli.
13) Karo Murat (5-18)
Last Fight: 10/26/2013- L (UD12) vs. #2 Bernard Hopkins
Next Fight: Unknown
Murat is a free agent after his contract with Sauerland recently expired.
14) Thomas Williams, Jr. (5-5)
Last Fight: 1/24/2014- TKO1 #13 Cornelius White
Next Fight: Unknown
Williams has been well-matched against vulnerable guys with good resumes.
15) Cedric Agnew (6-46)
Last Fight: 4/12/2013- UD12 #14 Yusaf Mack
Next Fight: 3/29/2014- vs. #4 Sergey Kovalev
Agnew was ordered to defend his regional title against fringe contender Anatoliy Dudchenko, and also appeared to have the option of fighting Sukhotsky for a position as IBF mandatory.  Instead, he’ll now roll the dice big against Kovalev.
16) Edwin Rodriguez (6-33)
Last Fight: 11/16/2013- L (UD12) vs. Champ Andre Ward
Next Fight: Unknown
Rodriguez’s trainer Ronnie Shields opines that a fight against a top-15 level light heavyweight would be a good jumping-off point for his anticipated permanent move up.  Before that happens, he’ll need to recover from minor elbow surgery he had in December.
17) Hadillah Mohoumadi (18-35)
Last Fight: 11/30/2013- TKO5 Bartlomiej Grafka (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
18) Cornelius White (5-115)
Last Fight: 1/24/2014- L (TKO1) vs. Thomas Williams, Jr. (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Never blessed with big-time promotional or managerial ties, White has risked becoming a permanent opponent with his last two losses.
19) Eleider Alvarez (5-57)
Last Fight: 1/18/2014- UD10 Andy Gardiner (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Alvarez may have been suffering from a letdown after Oosthuizen withdrew from what could have been the Colombian’s biggest fight ever, and almost let it effect him to the point of losing to an unheralded undefeated prospect in Gardiner.
20) Lucian Bute (5-69)
Last Fight: 1/18/2014- L (UD12) vs. Jean Pascal (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Bute looks rather shopworn after the brutal beating at the hands of Froch, the close pitched battle with Grachev, and the humiliation at the hands of Pascal.

The Week Ahead:
Saturday
Ryno Liebenberg vs. Joey Vegas; Kempton Park, South Africa; Fight Klub (Poland)
Undefeated prospect Liebenberg gets by far his toughest test to date in gatekeeper Joey Vegas of Uganda.  The winner will at least be on the map.

Wilbeforce Shihepo vs. Johnny Muller; Kempton Park, South Africa; Fight Klub (Poland)
On the Liebenberg card, Muller looks to get his career going after thrice failing at or below the gatekeeper level (twice against Ryno himself).  Shihepo is no world-beater, but has to be the favorite against Muller, who looks like a mid-level journeyman so far.

Light Heavyweight: 2013, Nov 18-24

Posted in Light Heavyweight, Rankings with tags , , , , , , , on January 16, 2014 by danboxing
Saturday in Ontario, California, Andre Ward successfully defended his lineal championships, and unintentionally beat an actual ranked light heavyweight in the deal, since #15 Edwin Rodriguez showed up at 170 for the 168-pound fight.  I’ll discuss it in more detail at 168 since that was the fight’s intended division.

Saturday afternoon at the Turning Stone Casino in Verona, New York, #10 Isaac Chilemba easily handled low-level journeyman Michael Gbenga in a non-televised 8-rounder.  Depending on which judge you ask, Gbenga managed to win either no rounds, or one.

Earlier on Saturday, rugged Kiwi gatekeeper Robert Berridge prevailed in a fairly brutal battle of attrition against his coutnryman, borderline top-50 journeyman Daniel MacKinnon, on the Ustinov-Tua undercard in Hamilton, New Zealand.

Argentine fringe contender Roberto Feliciano Bolonti knocked out low-level journeyman Manuel Banquez on Friday in Mar del Plata, Argentina, needing five rounds of a scheduled ten to accomplish that.

And backtracking all the way to Tuesday, undefeated Miami-based Cuban Yunieski Gonzalez knocked out relatively untested 7-1 fringe prospect Jinner Guerrero of Ecuador in the 8th round of a scheduled 10, but seems to have had some problems along the way, having been dropped in round 1.

Despite all of this action, nothing new was really proven last week, and thus there are no changes this week.

Last Fight: 8/24/2013- UD12 Stefano Abatangelo (UNR)
Next Fight: 12/14/2013- vs. Marcus Oliveira (UNR)
Since getting dominated in your title fight, fighting journeymen, and then taking two years off is the required resume for becoming a WBA Super Champion, Beibut Shumenov has now assumed that dubious title.  Braehmer will now fight prospect Marcus Oliveira for the “regular” title on December 14 in Neubrandenburg, Germany.
13) Karo Murat (4-4)
Last Fight: 10/26/2013- L (UD12) vs. #2 Bernard Hopkins

Next Fight: 1/18/2013- vs. #6 SMW Thomas Oosthuizen
Alvarez is tentatively scheduled to fight Oosthuizen in January, and I have no new information to suggest whether or not Oosthuizen’s shaky performance and bad cut against Maderna will affect that.
19) Enzo Maccarinelli (4-14)
Last Fight: 8/17/2013- TKO11 Ovill McKenzie (UNR)
Next Fight: 12/7/2013- vs. Courtney Fry (UNR)

The Week Ahead: Fringe contender Dmitry Sukhotsky gets a chance to fight his way back into the rankings after he was forced out in late October, as he fights gatekeeper Eduard Gutknecht on the Hernandez-Alekseev undercard in Bamberg, Germany on Saturday.

The previous night in Lincoln, Rhode Island, Peter Manfredo continues on the comeback trail, as he fights mid-level journeyman Richard Gingras in his home state.  This fight could be at either 168 0r 175.  I’ll discuss it next week only in the relevant division.

Vyacheslav Uzelkoff had his hands full in the Ukraine on Saturday.  Jaidon Codrington appeared to have recaptured much of his old form from his glory days in 2007, where he was a legitimate fringe contender and famously gave Sakio Bika all he could handle after knocking out Bryan Vera.  Codrington displayed a sharp jab, smooth boxing, an effective rhythm, and sharp, accurate body punching.  This all led up to a 49-46 lead on my card (a score I’d find hard to compromise) after 5.  But Uzelkoff- who by comparison appeared to be plodding, frequently off balance, and tentative- was able to establish his power (the only real advantage he had) in the 4th, momentarily hurting Codrington with what appeared to be a body shot along the ropes.  Codrington righted the ship to take the 5th, but Uzelkoff mounted a vicious assault in the 6th, wobbling Codrington’s legs after catching him on the way out, and then jumping all over him until he was able the club him to the canvas with a left the the ribs a few seconds later.  Codrington arose at the count of 8.  He appeared to be bothered by the events to be sure, but I think it would be quite a stretch to say that he wouldn’t have been able to defend himself.  Referee Volodymyr Dyachuk made a hometown call in stopping it, and in doing so probably actually did a disservice to Uzelkoff, who looked capable of finishing the job.

Undefeated Atlanta prospect Michael Seals got no trouble from sub-.500 journeyman Steve Walker in Norcross, Georgia later that night, as the up-and-comer was able to stop hs man inside the first frame.

No changes this week.

The Week Ahead: Undefeated Miami-based Cuban Yunieski Gonzalez meets 7-1 fringe prospect Jinner Guerrero in Hollywood, Florida, on a card that is oddly only televised in Brazil, of all places.  That’s on Tuesday.

Friday features Argentine gatekeeper Roberto Feliciano Bolonti against low-level journeyman Manuel Banquez in Mar del Plata, Argentina.

Hard-hitting Kiwi gatekeeper Robert Berridge is in reasonably tough with journeyman Daniel MacKinnon on Saturday in Hamilton, New Zealand.  If MacKinnon isn’t top 50, he’s not far off, having shocked gatkeeper Mark Flanagan earlier this year before dropping a decision to Blake Caparello.

Later that night, #10 Isaac Chilemba makes his debut as a member of the Main Events stable, fighting low-level journeyman Michael Gbenga at the Turning Stone in Verona, New York.

Two-division Champion Andre Ward also defends his title Saturday night against #15 Edwin Rodriguez, but that will be at 168, the weight at which both men typically compete.

The following night in Parkville, Australia, middleweight prospect Jarrod Fletcher won every round of a 6-rounder against low-level Queensland journeyman Tim Kanofski.

Saturday in Guarulhos, Brazil, one-loss Brazilian prospect Jackson Junior got probably as big a win as he’s had since winning the Brazilian title a couple years ago, stopping veteran Argentine journeyman Francisco Mora in three.
