Junior Middleweight: 2013, Jun 3-9

Posted in Junior Middleweight, Rankings with tags , , , , , , , on June 21, 2013 by danboxing
No action to report from last week, but #16 Sechew Powell is removed for inactivity, since he last fought on June 1 of last year.  Taking the vacancy at #20 is Charlie Ota.  Ota was officially ranked for one week from April 22-28, though I didn’t include him in the rankings for that week until after the fact, when I noticed my error.  Other than that, he’s making his debut.

Dan’s Top 20 (Weeks in Current Position-Weeks in Top 10 if applicable-Weeks in Top 20)
Champ: None
1) Carlos Molina (18-100-115)
Last Fight: 2/1/2013- UD12 #11 Cory Spinks
Next Fight: 7/19/2013- vs. #5 Ishe Smith
After a couple months of speculation and assurances, Molina-Smith is now officially on for July 19 in Vegas.
2) Saul Alvarez (18-118-133)
Last Fight: 4/20/2013- W* (UD12) vs. #3 Austin Trout
Next Fight: 9/14/2013- vs. #1 WW Floyd Mayweather, Jr.
Floyd-Canelo on September 14 appeared to be made way back in February, but then appeared to be a distant memory for months.  Now it’s back on, for the exact same date.  The only difference is that Floyd got dropped for inactivity because the fight wasn’t signed when his 1-year anniversary at 154 came around.  There will be a 152-pound catchweight.
3) Austin Trout (15-53-122)
Last Fight: 4/20/2013- L* (UD12) vs. #2 Saul Alvarez
Next Fight: Unknown
Trout wants a rematch of his very dubious loss to Alvarez.  He certainly deserves it.  He’ll have to wait until 2014 at the earliest, though, as Canelo is fighting Mayweather.
4) Erislandy Lara (15-100-122)
Last Fight: 11/10/2012- D* (TD9) vs. #15 Vanes Martirosyan (robbery- should be win)
Next Fight: 6/8/2013- vs. #8 Alfredo Angulo
Lara will fight Angulo on Showtime, June 8 in Carson, California.
5) Ishe Smith (15-15-15)
Last Fight: 2/23/2013- W (MD12) vs. #3 Cornelius Bundrage
Next Fight: Unknown
See Molina’s notes, above.
6) Miguel Cotto (5-157-157)
Last Fight: 12/1/2012- L (UD12) vs. #8 Austin Trout
Next Fight: Unknown
Cotto appears very likely to fight K9 Bundrage on September 28.
7) Cornelius Bundrage (5-148-148)
Last Fight: 2/23/2013- L (MD12) vs. Ishe Smith (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
See Cotto’s notes, above.
8) Alfredo Angulo (5-193-193)
Last Fight: 12/15/2012- UD10 Jorge Silva (UNR)
Next Fight: 6/8/2013- vs. #4 Erislandy Lara
After it looked for awhile that he might fight Rosado next, Angulo will instead battle #4 Lara in Carson, California in early June.
9) Gabriel Rosado (5-11-122)
Last Fight: 5/4/2013- L* (SD10) vs. J’Leon Love (UNR) (at MW)
Next Fight: Unknown
In addition to the fight result barely being credible to begin with, it turns out Love was on a banned diuretic that helped him make weight at 160 (which he managed to do only by the skin of his teeth).  Most likely this will end up as a no-contest, thus adding even more reasons for me to not hold it against Rosado’s ranking at 154.
10) Sergey Rabchenko (5-5-51)
Last Fight: 3/30/2013- KO2 Adriano Nicchi (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Rabchenko might be fighting Italian prospect Emanuele Della Rosa on July 13 in Monaco.  A purse bid has been scheduled for June 18.
11) Delvin Rodriguez (5-99)
Last Fight: 5/24/2013- TKO8 Freddy Hernandez (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Rodriguez got a cuts stoppage over a guy that was beating him, but the judges had his back in case he needed their help.
12) Lukas Konecny (5-95)
Last Fight: 3/23/2013- W (TD12) vs. Karim Achour (UNR) (at MW)
Next Fight: Unknown
13) Keith Thurman (5-28)
Last Fight: 3/9/2013- UD12 #? WW Jan Zaveck (at WW)
Next Fight: 7/27/2013- vs. Diego Chaves (UNR) (at WW)
Thurman will be back on July 27 against undefeated Argentine prospect Diego Chaves, again at Welterweight.  The fight will be in San Antonio.
14) Vanes Martirosyan (5-105)
Last Fight: 11/10/2012- D* (TD9) vs. #6 Erislandy Lara (robbery- should be L)
Next Fight: 6/15/2013- vs. Ryan Davis (UNR)
Martirosyan will look to rebound from a broken thumb on June 15 against journeyman Ryan Davis, a non-threatening nobody that was dropped from a 2012 date with Vanes due to a failed eye exam or some such thing.
15) Yuri Foreman (5-19)
Last Fight: 4/6/2013- UD6 Gundrick King (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Foreman is keeping his comeback at a very low level for the time being.
16) Willie Nelson (1-14)
Last Fight: 3/1/2013- TKO1 Michael Medina (UNR)
Next Fight: 6/29/2013- vs. Luciano Cuello (UNR)
Nelson finally has an opponent for 6/29- decent Argentine journeyman Luciano Cuello.
17) Brian Rose (1-11)
Last Fight: 4/20/2013- TKO12 Joachim Alcine (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Rose has officially vacated his British title.
18) Guido Pitto (1-6)
Last Fight: 4/27/2013- W* (SD12) vs. Jack Culcay (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
It took an “upset” over highly-touted prospect Culcay for Pitto to get the recognition he earned but was denied against Veron.
19) Jack Culcay (1-5)
Last Fight: 4/27/2013- L* (SD12) vs. Guido Pitto (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Most see Culcay’s squeaker of a loss to Pitto to be a major setback in his career.  Not I.  First, he barely lost it, if at all.  Second, he held his own with a true and more proven fringe contender, who was underrated due to a robbery.
20) Charlie Ota (1-1)
Last Fight: 4/6/2013- UD12 Kyung-Suk Kwak (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Ota hasn’t done a darned thing in a good long while, but the division has regressed just enough that he finally has a foothold on the top 20.

The Week Ahead:  Friday in Verona, New York, young gatekeeper Jorge Melendez takes on top-shelf journeyman Luis Grajeda in the ShoBox main event.

The following night in Brindisi, Italy, one-loss Roman prospect Emanuele Della Rosa will be featured against an opponent that has yet to be announced as of Monday.

Meanwhile, in Creil, France, still-promising local 2-loss prospect Cedric Vitu- who went life and death with current #10 Sergey Rabchenko in 2012- gets what should be an easier assignment against Hungarian journeyman Jozsef “Shatter Machine” Matolcsi.

The biggest fight occurs later that night in Carson, California, where #4 Erislandy Lara collides with #8 Alfredo Angulo in a compelling and interesting style match-up on Showtime.

On the undercard, undefeated prospect Jermell Charlo gets the toughest test of his promising career against fringe contender Demetrius Hopkins, the nephew of legend Bernard Hopkins.

Junior Middleweight: 2012, Jun 4-10

Posted in Junior Middleweight, Rankings with tags , , , , , , , on March 21, 2013 by danboxing
Last week was the most important since the Mayweather-Cotto card shook up the division a month ago.
Friday in Bethlehem, PA, #19 Sechew Powell made a decent showing for a while, demonstrating some slickness, skill, and experience in winning the first three rounds on my card against #10 Gabriel Rosado.  As the rounds wore on, however, Rosado’s superior conditioning and overall strength began to shine, as he began to wear Powell down and spring some leaks in the veteran’s defense.  Ultimately, Rosado got to show his notable killer instinct as he dropped Powell twice in the 9th, upon the second of which Steve Smoger stopped the fight without a count.

The following night on the Las Vegas undercard for Tarver-Kayode, #12 Austin Trout got the biggest win of his young career against #13 Delvin Rodriguez.  Trout wasn’t spectacular by any means, but he generally controlled the action against an uncharacteristically tentative Rodriguez, allowing him to carry most of the rounds.  My overall impression is that if Rodriguez had stepped up his base level of aggression a bit, he might have been able to snatch the win.  As it was, I gave it to Trout 117-111.  Two of the judges saw it similarly to me, while Alejandro Rochin’s shutout scorecard was clearly too wide.

Japanese titlist Daisuke Nakagawa could not make good in his first defense against quality journeyman Akio Shibata, who held the title for a few months in 2009-10 before losing it to transplanted American Charlie Ota.  The fight was evidently close, with a total of 3 points separating the two fighters on the two deciding cards, but unfortunately I can’t find a video to verify the accuracy of the result.

Later that night in London, Scotsman Kris Carslaw put up a spirited challenge for Brian Rose’s British title.  So spirited, in fact, that I scored the fight for him 115-113.  I did happen to give Carslaw all the debateable rounds, though, and a case could be made that Rose won as wide as 117-111.  Carslaw was in total control in round two, when he was badly cut by a clash of heads, while Rose was able to hold his own thereafter.

Myriad changes in the rankings, of course.  The biggest winner of the week is Austin Trout, who is buoyed from #12 all the way to #8, which forces Alfredo Angulo down to #9.  Gabriel Rosado’s win allows him to retain the #10 spot despite the promotion of Trout.  Ryan Rhodes falls from #9 to #11 due to the shakeup.  Cory Spinks falls one spot to #12.  Brian Rose drops all the way to #20 with his highly debateable win over Carslaw, who was not even at a solid journeyman level after having lost to Matthew Hall.  This allows Delvin Rodriguez to remain at #13 despite his defeat.  Everyone ranked #15-20 last week moves up a spot due to Rose’s decline except Sechew Powell, who swaps places with Antonio Margarito to remain at #19 with the loss.

Dan’s Top 20 (Weeks in Current Position-Weeks in Top 10 if applicable-Weeks in Top 20)
Champ: None
1) Saul Alvarez (5-66-81)
Last Fight: 5/5/2012- UD12 Shane Mosley (UNR)
Next Fight: 9/15/2012- vs. Unknown Opponent
Kirkland signed and then immediately withdrew from a fight with Canelo.  Lara, K9, and Trout are now being considered.
2) Carlos Molina (5-48-63)
Last Fight: 3/23/2012- L*(DQ10) vs. #3 James Kirkland (Robbery)
Next Fight: Unknown
Molina has said he’ll appeal his DQ against Kirkland.
3) Cornelius Bundrage (11-96-96)
Last Fight: 6/25/2011- UD12 #11 Sechew Powell
Next Fight: 7/28/2012- vs. #12 Cory Spinks
K9 has dropped Don King, and is being considered for a fight with Canelo, though he currently still has a date with Cory Spinks.
4) Floyd Mayweather, Jr. (5-5-5)
Last Fight: 5/5/2012- UD12* #4 Miguel Cotto
Next Fight: Unknown
Floyd says he’s considering retirement after a tough fight with Cotto.  But more recently, future fights against Pacquiao, Canelo, Khan, Cotto, Guerrero, and Berto/Ortiz have been mentioned.  Of course Floyd is now in jail.
5) Miguel Cotto (5-105-105)
Last Fight: 5/5/2012- L* (UD12) vs. WW #1 Floyd Mayweather, Jr.
Next Fight: Unknown
Cotto plans to return by the end of the year, and continue fighting for 2 or 3 more years.  Rematches with both Pacquiao and Mayweather appear to be possibilities at some point.
6) Erislandy Lara (5-48-70)
Last Fight: 4/20/2012- TKO1 Ronald Hearns (UNR) (at MW)
Next Fight: Unknown
Lara is being considered as Alvarez’s next opponent.
7) James Kirkland (5-31-31)
Last Fight: 3/24/2012- W*(DQ10) vs. #6 Carlos Molina (Robbery)
Next Fight: Unknown
Kirkland bailed almost immediately on a fight he signed with Canelo, and says he plans to return in October or November.
8) Austin Trout (1-1-70)
Last Fight: 6/2/2012- UD12 #13 Delvin Rodriguez
Next Fight: Unknown
Trout is among those being considered to tangle with Canelo on 9/15.
9) Alfredo Angulo (1-141-141)
Last Fight: 11/5/2011- L (TKO6) vs. James Kirkland (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Troubling news.  Angulo has been detained by US authorities since at least January.  Apparently his only crime was being here on an expired Visa.  Don’t get me wrong.  I’m in favor of enforcing immigration laws, but to lock a guy up for months on end without so much as a trial?  Awful.  We’re rooting for you, Perro.
10) Gabriel Rosado (2-2-70)
Last Fight: 6/1/2013- TKO9 #19 Sechew Powell
Next Fight: Unknown
Rosado still wants Canelo, though Canelo isn’t considering him as an option at present.
11) Ryan Rhodes (1-137)
Last Fight: 11/26/2011- W (PTS8) vs. Sergei Khomitski (UNR) (at MW)
Next Fight: 6/16/2012- vs. Sergei Rabchenko (UNR)
After suffering a back injury, Rhodes has rescheduled his fight with Rabchenko for June 16 in Manchester.

12) Cory Spinks (1-19)
Last Fight: 1/28/2012- UD12 #11 Sechew Powell
Next Fight: 7/28/2012- vs. #3 Cornelius Bundrage
Spinks will have a rematch with #3 K9 Bundrage in San Jose on July 28.  He’s brave for taking it, considering the beating he took last time.
13) Delvin Rodriguez (2-47)
Last Fight: 6/2/2012- L (UD12) vs. #12 Austin Trout
Next Fight: Unknown
14) Shane Mosley (1-5)
Last Fight: 5/5/2012- L (UD12) vs. #2 Saul Alvarez
Next Fight: Unknown
Everybody but Mosley appears to know he’s done, but he still has the resume to hold a top 20 ranking.  Let’s hope he retires soon, though.
15) Vanes Martirosyan (1-53)
Last Fight: 2/4/2012- TKO3 Troy Lowry (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Vanes has become extremely risk averse since his difficult fight with Roman last June, as he has now turned down an eliminator against Lara.
16) Lukas Konecny (1-43)
Last Fight: 4/5/2012- TKO7 Salim Larbi (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
The WBO is looking to make Konecny-Baysangurov happen, and has set 6/4 as the deadline for an agreement to avoid purse bids.
17) Carlos Quintana (1-5)
Last Fight: 5/5/2012- TKO6 Deandre Latimore (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Quintana said he wanted Canelo in the immediate aftermath of his upset TKO of Deandre Latimore, and has since expressed interest in Cotto and Trout, as well.
18) Antonio Margarito (1-2)
Last Fight: 12/3/2011- L (TKO10) vs. #5 Miguel Cotto
Next Fight: 7/7/2012- vs. Unknown Opponent (at MW)
Margarito is expecting to be back in the ring on July 7 after recovering from an achilles injury, and expects to fight at Middleweight.
19) Sechew Powell (2-116)
Last Fight: 6/1/2012- L (TKO9) vs. #10 Gabriel Rosado
Next Fight: Unknown
20) Brian Rose (1-27)
Last Fight: 6/2/2012- W* (UD12) vs. Kris Carslaw (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Rose’s reign as British Champion hasn’t been the greatest- partly due to limited available opposition, and partly due to his own awful performance against Carslaw.

The Week Ahead: No action worth mentioning in the division this week..

Junior Middleweight: 2012, May 28- Jun 3

Posted in Junior Middleweight, Rankings with tags , , , , , , , on March 13, 2013 by danboxing
Saturday in Tucson, Arizona, gatekeeper Jesus Soto Karass ground out a split decision win over one-loss prospect Said El Harrak.  I expect to watch this fight and will edit this with a more detailed description after doing so.

But the main news in the division this week is very sad.  Just 6 days after signing to fight Canelo on September 15, longtime contender Paul Williams (#8 last week) was involved in a serious motorcycle accident, and is reportedly paralyzed.  It’s my sad duty to remove him from the rankings due to the catastrophic injury.  I expect that I speak for all of my readers when I say we’re praying for him.

Everyone ranked #9 and below last week moves up.  Gabriel Rosado reclaims a spot in the top 10, and Antonio Margarito returns at #20, each having been displaced by the 5/5 Mayweather-Cotto card.

Dan’s Top 20 (Weeks in Current Position-Weeks in Top 10 if applicable-Weeks in Top 20)
Champ: None
1) Saul Alvarez (4-65-80)
Last Fight: 5/5/2012- UD12 Shane Mosley (UNR)
Next Fight: 9/15/2012- vs. Unknown Opponent
Canelo signed to fight Paul Williams, but Williams was paralyzed less than a week later.
2) Carlos Molina (4-47-62)
Last Fight: 3/23/2012- L*(DQ10) vs. #3 James Kirkland (Robbery)
Next Fight: Unknown
Molina has said he’ll appeal his DQ against Kirkland.
3) Cornelius Bundrage (10-95-95)
Last Fight: 6/25/2011- UD12 #11 Sechew Powell
Next Fight: 7/28/2012- vs. #12 Cory Spinks
K9 will give Cory Spinks a rematch on July 28.  K9 won by brutal beatdown last time.
4) Floyd Mayweather, Jr. (4-4-4)
5) Miguel Cotto (4-104-104)
Last Fight: 5/5/2012- L* (UD12) vs. WW #1 Floyd Mayweather, Jr.
Next Fight: Unknown
Cotto plans to return by the end of the year, and continue fighting for 2 or 3 more years.  Rematches with both Pacquiao and Mayweather appear to be possibilities at some point.
6) Erislandy Lara (4-47-69)
Last Fight: 4/20/2012- TKO1 Ronald Hearns (UNR) (at MW)
Next Fight: Unknown
The WBC ordered an eliminator between Lara and Vanes for a shot at Canelo, but Vanes- true to form- turned it down.  Lara hopes to return in June, and is considering Mundine and Quintana.  He also says he’d meet Victor Ortiz at a 150-pound catchweight on June 23.
7) James Kirkland (4-30-30)
Last Fight: 3/24/2012- W*(DQ10) vs. #6 Carlos Molina (Robbery)
Next Fight: Unknown
Kirkland appeared to be the frontrunner for Canelo’s 9/15 date before Paul Williams got the nod.  Now that Williams is out of commission, we’ll see if Kirkland steps back up to the plate.
8) Alfredo Angulo (1-140-140)
Last Fight: 11/5/2011- L (TKO6) vs. James Kirkland (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Troubling news.  Angulo has been detained by US authorities since at least January.  Apparently his only crime was being here on an expired Visa.  Don’t get me wrong.  I’m in favor of enforcing immigration laws, but to lock a guy up for months on end without so much as a trial?  Awful.  We’re rooting for you, Perro.
9) Ryan Rhodes (1-136-136)
Last Fight: 11/26/2011- W (PTS8) vs. Sergei Khomitski (UNR) (at MW)
Next Fight: 6/16/2012- vs. Sergei Rabchenko (UNR)
After suffering a back injury, Rhodes has rescheduled his fight with Rabchenko for June 16 in Manchester.
10) Gabriel Rosado (1-1-69)
Last Fight: 1/21/2012- TKO5 Jesus Soto Karass (UNR)
Next Fight: 6/1/2013- vs. #19 Sechew Powel
With just less than a month to go before the fight, Sechew Powell has replaced Joel Julio as Rosado’s opponent.
11) Cory Spinks (1-18)
Last Fight: 1/28/2012- UD12 #11 Sechew Powell
Next Fight: 7/28/2012- vs. #3 Cornelius Bundrage
Spinks will have a rematch with #3 K9 Bundrage in San Jose on July 28.  He’s brave for taking it, considering the beating he took last time.
12) Austin Trout (1-69)
Last Fight: 11/11/2011- TKO6 Frank LoPorto (UNR)
Next Fight: 6/2/2012- vs. #13 Delvin Rodriguez
Trout-Rodriguez is now official for June 2 on Showtime.
13) Delvin Rodriguez (1-46)
Last Fight: 12/3/2011- UD10* #9 Pawel Wolak
Next Fight: 6/2/2012- vs. #12 Austin Trout
See Trout’s notes, above.
14) Brian Rose (1-26)
Last Fight: 3/31/2012- UD12 Max Maxwell (UNR)
Next Fight: 6/2/2012- vs. Kris Carslaw (UNR)
In fairness, the British light middleweight scene is extremely thin compared to other divisions, but I can’t say that Rose’s title reign is off to a great start.  He’s defending his title against a second consecutive journeyman that could be called mid-level at best.
15) Shane Mosley (1-4)
Last Fight: 5/5/2012- L (UD12) vs. #2 Saul Alvarez
Next Fight: Unknown
Everybody but Mosley appears to know he’s done, but he still has the resume to hold a top 20 ranking.  Let’s hope he retires soon, though.
16) Vanes Martirosyan (1-52)
Last Fight: 2/4/2012- TKO3 Troy Lowry (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Vanes has become extremely risk averse since his difficult fight with Roman last June, as he has now turned down an eliminator against Lara.
17) Lukas Konecny (1-42)
Last Fight: 4/5/2012- TKO7 Salim Larbi (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
The WBO is looking to make Konecny-Baysangurov happen, and has set 6/4 as the deadline for an agreement to avoid purse bids.
18) Carlos Quintana (1-4)
Last Fight: 5/5/2012- TKO6 Deandre Latimore (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Quintana said he wanted Canelo in the immediate aftermath of his upset TKO of Deandre Latimore, and has since expressed interest in Cotto, as well.
19) Sechew Powell (1-115)
Last Fight: 1/28/2012- L(UD12) vs. Cory Spinks (UNR)
Next Fight: 6/1/2012- vs. #10 Gabriel Rosado
Powell is a semi-short notice replacement for Joel Julio in the NBC Sports-televised bout with Gabriel Rosado.
20) Antonio Margarito (1-1)
Last Fight: 12/3/2011- L (TKO10) vs. #5 Miguel Cotto
Next Fight: 7/7/2012- vs. Unknown Opponent (at MW)
Margarito is expecting to be back in the ring on July 7 after recovering from an achilles injury, and expects to fight at Middleweight.

The Week Ahead: Friday in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, #10 Gabriel Rosado and #19 Sechew Powell face off on NBC Sports Network.

Saturday in Tokyo, gatekeeper Daisuke Nakagawa fights solid journeyman Akio Shibata for Nakagawa’s Japanese title.

Hours later in Manchester, England, #14 and British Champion Brian Rose makes a title defense against one-loss but still largely untested prospect Kris Karslaw.

Finally, even more hours later on the Tarver-Kayode undercard in Vegas, undefeated #12 Austin Trout meets his toughest test yet in #13 Delvin Rodriguez.

Junior Middleweight: 2012, Jan 30- Feb 5

Posted in Junior Middleweight, Rankings with tags , , , , , , , on March 4, 2013 by danboxing
In maybe a bit of a minor upset, inactive fringe contender Cory Spinks suddenly became a resurgent contender by nicking a close but unanimous decision over #11 Sechew Powell on Saturday in Springfield, Missouri.  Powell claims home cooking (the fight was 3 hours from Spinks’ hometown of St. Louis), saying all of the judges should have scored it 116-112 in his favor.  Unfortunately the fight was not on TV, and not even the most amateur of videos seems to exist anywhere.  This is one of the most significant fights in my memory to be so totally devoid of video.  I could have gone and watched the fight, and in fact intended to, but was unable to get off work.  Anyway, in the absence of any reliable evidence to the contrary, I have no choice but to accept it as a close victory for Spinks.

In the division’s only other notable fight, gatekeeper Grady Brewer managed to win a decision over lower mid-level Brazilian journeyman Edvan Dos Santos in Oklahoma City, but only won by a unanimous margin of 6 rounds to 2- not what you’d like to see from a guy trying to rebuild at a late stage of his career when fighting against that level of competition.

Spinks win takes him from the brink of obscurity to the #10 spot in one fell swoop.  Powell slides all the way back to #18 with the loss.  This illustrates why I like to see all fights that might affect my rankings.  Whether right or wrong, the judges have brought one man back from the dead and badly damaged the career of another- all with no public oversight.  If I’m ever able to locate a video, I will obviously watch the hell out of it.

In the reshuffling, Austin Trout is forced out of the top 10 after an 8-week stint, and Prince Arron is bounced from the rankings after returning for 7 weeks.

Dan’s Top 20 (Weeks in Current Position-Weeks in Top 10 if applicable-Weeks in Top 20)

1) Saul Alvarez (33-48-63)
Last Fight: 11/26/2011- TKO5 Kermit Cintron (UNR)
Next Fight: 5/5/2012- vs. Unknown Opponent
Canelo is reportedly considering Kirkland and Shane Mosley for his May 5 date- probably as a co-feature for a Mayweather fight.
2) Cornelius Bundrage (33-78-78)
Last Fight: 6/25/2011- UD12 #11 Sechew Powell

4) Miguel Cotto (9-87-87)
Last Fight: 12/3/2011- RTD10 #20 Antonio Margarito

The prevailing rumor is that Cotto will fight Pacquiao in a rematch on June 9 in Vegas, but Cotto maintains that no deal has been reached.
5) Erislandy Lara (9-30-52)
Last Fight: 7/9/2011- L*(MD12) vs. #6 Paul Williams

10) Cory Spinks (1-1-1)
Last Fight: 1/28/2012- UD12 #11 Sechew Powell

There is talk floating that Margarito might move up to fight Julio Cesar Chavez, Jr. in June.

The Week Ahead:  Two notables will see action on Saturday.  In Tokyo, 34 year old Daisuke Nakagawa, a two-loss, top 50 fighter that has not lost since 2005, takes on one-loss prospect Yosuke Kirima for the Japanese title recently vacated by American transplant Charlie Ota.  Later that night in San Antonio, #15 Vanes Martirosyan continues to tread water against journeyman Troy Lowry on the Chavez-Rubio undercard.

Junior Middleweight: 2012, Jan 23-29

#11 Gabriel Rosado put on a hell of a performance in Philadelphia in the co-feature for  the debut of NBC Sports Network’s new “Fight Night” series.  He was fast, powerful, and sharp in general.  Jesus Soto Karass was game and tough as always, but he was badly outgunned, and was stopped in the 5th after a thorough beating in that round and the one before.  I don’t believe it’s possible to look any better over 5 rounds against good competition than Rosado did.

Rosado’s big win- maybe only the 3rd best of his career in terms of level of opposition- bumps him up 2 spots to #9.  He fails to eclipse Ryan Rhodes in a close call because of the fact that Rhodes has beaten a top 10 contender and Rosado has not, as well as the fact that Rosado lost t a low-level opponent in Joshua Onyango nearly 5 years ago.  Austin Trout is forced to #10, while Sechew Powell drops to #11 after 7 weeks in the top 10.
