Argentine Prospect Emilio Zarate was upset by journeyman Sebastian Ceballos this weekend in his home country. This is a nice win for Ceballos in a rematch of their draw from March, but he has enough adverse results in his recent past to keep him shy of contention even after the victory.

THE WEEK AHEAD: This is a pretty active week. #1 Contender Vitali Klitschko takes on former Heavyweight Champion (by gift) Shannon Briggs, who is certainly over the hill and not a serious contender right now. This should be a gimme, but at least it’s a name for Vitali, which is about all he can hope for after he and his brother have all but cleaned out the non-cowards of the division. Former light heavyweight Champion Antonio Tarver makes a big jump up in weight, hoping to contend in the Heavyweight division. He takes on Nagy Aguilera, who was once a pretty exciting prospect after stopping contender Oleg Maskaev, but has since proven less promising than advertised. This is a good first test for the 41-year-old Tarver, but is unlikely to earn him any ranking initially, win or lose. Listless contender Alexander Povetkin continues his pattern of not fighting anyone significant by fighting fading former prospect Teke Oruh, and giant prospect Alexander Ustinov fights journeyman Oezcan Cetinkaya in Hamburg.

#20 Timur Ibragimov defeated his mediocre opponent Luis Pineda, but if the scores are any indication he may not have met expectations, with the average score being about 117-111. Ibragimov deserves credit for staying busy, but it would be great to see him try to climb the ladder against some tougher competition.

THE WEEK AHEAD: One notable fight this week: 10-1 prospect Emilio Zarate faces solid journeyman Sebastian Ceballos in Argentina. This is a rematch of a March fight that ended in a draw. Ceballos, only 25-6-2 against an mostly average competition level, comes in on a pretty good run. Since his last loss in May 2008, he’s 14-0-1, with only the Zarate fight going the distance. Zarate’s only loss was to veteran Fabio Moli.

The big story this week was Serge Yannick, a once-beaten prospect originally from Cameroon pulling off a minor upset of gatekeeper Joseph Kwadjo. In a vacuum, this victory alone would be enough to earn Yannick a ranking, but when coupled with his loss late last year to fellow prospect Michael Bolling, he falls well short. In Serbia, another prospect by the name of Nicola Sjekloca did what he was supposed to by dominating a 8-round decision over the less than compelling Gordan Glisic, and Andy Lee knocked down hapless Troy Lowry 5 times en route to a 4th round stoppage in Hammond, Indiana.

No fights of note occurred this week, but I have a couple scheduling notes to report. Carl Froch, who postponed his 10/2 matchup with Arthur Abraham due to an injured back, has come together with Abraham to announce a new date and venue: November 27 in Helsinki, Finland. On the same split-site telecast, Andres Ward and Dirrell will duel in a fight which fell through on September 25 due to venue disagreements.

THE WEEK AHEAD: A few skirmishes are on the horizon this week. Solid Ghanian gatekeeper Joseph Kwadjo takes on Cameroon/Australian 9-1 prospect Serge Yannick. This one could conceivably move the rankings. Also, undefeated Montenegran prospect Nikola Sjekloca squares off with weak journeyman Gordan Glisic in Serbia. Finally, Andy Lee stays crazy-busy by fighting soft journeyman Troy Lowry just two weeks after his last fight, marking his third fight in just ten weeks.

Andy Lee stopped solid journeyman Michael Walker in the 8th round this week. Walker doesn’t appear good enough at this stage to warrant advancement for Lee, who is difficult to pigeonhole in terms of proper ranking. He technically has two wins at 168, but both were against slightly overweight Middleweights. He has yet to beat a legit 168 pounder of consequence, and probably needs to to enter the top 20. Also, Maxim Vlasov, the Russian prospect, moved to 19-0 with a 7th-round stoppage of journeyman Mikhail Krinitsin. Nothing too notable about that win…just keeping busy and getting some rounds in. Vlasov has been in the Ring enough to fight better competition now, though.

Journeyman Roman Aramyan retired on his stool in the midst of being shut out on the cards by fringe contender Brian Magee. Magee’s choice of opponent smacks more of the borderline-top-25 fringe contender I believe him to be than the top-10 fighter that the Ring inexplicably holds him up as. The biggest news this week involves one fight that’s on and another that’s not. #19 Daniel Geale, who is also a more serious middleweight contender, has signed for a fight with fellow middleweight contender Roman Karmazin, at middleweight. Geale will maintain his ranking at 168 despite this move down until such time as he’s been inactive at this weight for a year or until he is displaced by a more deserving contender. In the meantime, this fight, set for Halloween night, will doubtless have huge implications on my as-yet unpublished middleweight rankings. And the biggest news of all: Carl Froch has been announced to have injured his back, and will postpone his huge fight with Arthur Abraham which had been set for October 2 in Monaco. Early estimates for the reschedule date are for late November or early December.

THE WEEK AHEAD: A couple notables are in action this week. 18-0 Russian prospect Maxim Vlasov, who has been brought along somewhat slowly, takes a step down in competition from recent victim Jerson Ruvelo by locking horns with Mikhail Krinitsin. Though 9-1-2, Krinitsin is decidedly more journeyman than prospect. In other action, Andy Lee is back in action after only 7 weeks off. He takes on journeyman Michael Walker. Walker may not be a complete stiff- he looked really good at times against Danny Jacobs on the Pacquiao-Hatton undercard last year- but he has lost three straight and definitely looked sluggish before getting stopped by Fernando Guerrero in April. He was even once a minor player at 160 and 168, but appears to be on the downslope. This matchup won’t earn Lee a ranking or a ton of recognition for bravery, but it’s not a complete joke, either.

THE WEEK AHEAD: Finally something to report! Brian Magee, who is indefensibly ranked #10 by the Ring, but who is nevertheless a solid fringe contender, is in action this week in what is, unfortunately, a pointless matchup. His opponent, Roman Aramyan, is a mediocre journeyman, and is a prototypical stay-busy opponent. The question that arises, though, is why Magee couldn’t do a little better when he’s not actually staying particularly busy- 8 months since his last fight.

No in-ring action this week, but we found out the unfortunate news that Mikkel Kessler had to pull out of his upcoming fight with Allan Green, which was set for September 25, with a nagging eye injury. The Viking Warrior, who with a pretty soft opponent in Green was almost assured of a berth in the semifinals, is now out of the Super Six tournament, but hopes to fight the winner in 2011. The next move for Showtime is uncertain, but it appears possible that the network may abbreviate Green’s unfortunate tenure in the tournament and move on to the semi-finals with the remaining two matchups determining the finalists. Kessler had a tough row to ho to win the tournament with Andre Ward, who had previously dominated him, looming as a likely future opponent. Let’s hope that the much-needed rest allows the Dane to recover, as he has proven a fan-friendly fighter when matched right. Because there is no reason to believe Kessler is retiring or even that he will have difficulty fighting again within the next year, he will maintain his ranking.
