Cruiserweight: 2010, Nov 1-7

Alexander Kotlobay took on a pretty reasonable challenge in his rebound fight from his first round destruction at the hands of Enzo Maccarinelli back in April.  His opponent, Laszlo Hubert, is a journeyman, but has only lost to guys we’ve heard of.  Kotlobay came off looking pretty good, stopping Hubert in 7.

Brian Minto- who had been a heavyweight gatekeeper before moving down and getting beat up by Marco Huck- took his first win at cruiserweight over completely unproven 18-3 journeyman Pierre Karam.  Karam retired in his corner following the second round.  Minto is not rateable since he’s never beaten a significant cruiserweight, but still has the heavyweight success to put him on the watch list for a rating if he ever fights a gatekeeper or fringe contender.

#16 Troy Ross won a comfortable 10-round decision over journeyman Carl Handy in what has to be considered a disappointing matchup after Ross looked good before a questionable cuts stoppage against #1 Steve Cunningham.

#14 Steve Herelius- who looked good in stopping Firat Arlsan this summer- puzzlingly stepped way down in competition to an 8-round stay-busy fight against mediocre journeyman Roman Kracik, winning by unanimous decision.

Henry Namauu pulled off a minor upset in defeating Canadian prospect Jason Douglas, who came in 8-2 but had been thrown to the wolves a little bit more than the average young gun in his career.  Namauu, who also moves to 8-3, has now won 5 consecutive fights since his last loss to Victor Barragan in early 2009.  Despite this loss and 2 to lesser opposition at heavyweight in 2008, Namauu has made a pretty good case for himself in the top 25, where Douglas was probably a member before the fight.  I stop short of putting him in the top 20, though, especially since the fight was a split decision and Namauu had the help of a point deduction.

THE WEEK AHEAD: This week, Alexander Kotlobay looks to rebound from a destruction at the hands of Enzo Maccarinelli this April against competent journeyman Laszlo Hubert in Russia.  Brian Minto faces a token challenge from Pierre Karam in Butler, Pennsylvania.  #16 Troy Ross stays busy against journeyman Carl Handy in Ontario.  Finally, #14 Steve Herelius makes an odd step down in competition, fighting just an 8 rounder against journeyman Roman Kracik in Paris.

#3 Ola Afolabi put forth an average performance in turning aside the challenge of completely unworthy opponent Sandro Siproshvili, with one judge scoring it only seven rounds to three.  Also, Lateef Kayode beat Epifanio Mendoza into submission, as the latter conceded the fight after the 5th round in his corner.  Neither fight affects the rankings, though Kayode’s was at least slightly impressive.

THE WEEK AHEAD: Jason Douglas, a 30 year-old Canadian prospect who has perhaps been brought along too quickly- he’s been fighting lots of solid mid-range opponents, which has led him to an 8-2 record- is in action against another very solid journeyman in 7-3 Henry Namauu of the US.

Rogelio Rossi, a semi-prospect, had his fourth career meeting with fellow Argentine Mariano Strunz on Friday.  Both guys are roughly gatekeeper-level in their careers, but Rossi is also somewhat of a prospect despite two bad losses early in his career.  Both combatants have largely built their career off of their rivalry to this point, and perhaps Rossi got the last laugh in winning a convincing 12-round decision.  With this win, he moves to within a hair’s breadth of fringe contention.  The only thing that keeps him at the bottom of the pile in that realm is the fact that he drew only a year ago with a lesser-regarded Strunz.  Revenge is sweet, but it’s hard to build a career as a contender by beating only one local rival.  Rossi remains unranked.

THE WEEK AHEAD: #3 Ola Afolabi has a stay-busy fight set for this weekend with mid-range journeyman Sandro Siproshvili.  Not exactly an ideal choice for a guy that has been out of the ring for 10 months.  Before that, on Friday, Lateef Kayode (who was briefly ranked #20 before Alexander Frenkel’s debut) is back in action against Epifanio Mendoza, who was once a credible opponent, but has fallen on hard times.  This isn’t going to do anything to return Kayode to the rankings, but is also better than your average stay-busy fight for a young fringe contender.

Disappointing fringe contender Kevin Johnson didn’t disappoint Friday in stopping non-entity Charles Davis in the 4th round in Charlotte.  Likewise, Canadian prospect Neven Pajkic took care of business with a shutout victory over equally pointless opponent Andreas Sidon.  In the weeks most significant matchup, Bulgarian prospect Kubrat Pulev took on veteran gatekeeper Dominick Guinn in Germany, losing only one round on one card in a fight that was scheduled for only 8 rounds.  Pulev basically earned a ranking with the win when added to wins over gatekeeper Gbenga Oloukun and former gatekeepers Matt Skelton and Zack Page.  He didn’t mess around with soft opposition in starting his career last year, and had five fights in 2010 so far.  It’s a very close call between him and Timur Ibragimov, however, who has a comparable win over Oliver McCall recently.  I give the slight edge to Ibragimov, however, because his win over Timo Hoffmann, while long ago by now, is the best win either man can boast.  With Nikolai Valuev soon to exit for inactivity, expect Pulev to debut in the near future, though.

THE WEEK AHEAD: On Friday, fringe contender Kevin Johnson is in light in his first action since his embarrassing lack of effort over 10 months ago against Vitali Klitschko.  He fights a weak journeyman named Charles Davis in North Carolina.  Saturday in Canada, undefeated prospect Neven Pajkic looks to destroy mediocre veteran journeyman Andreas Sidon.

Also on Saturday, Bulgarian prospect Kubrat “The Cobra” Pulev faces his toughest test yet, a very significant 8-rounder against veteran gatekeeper Dominick Guinn in Germany.

The most significant fight of the week found Vitali Klitschko, the former champion and current WBC titlist and #1 contender, brutally beating Shannon Briggs, who won the heavyweight championship of the world in 1997 with an absolutely ludicrous decision over an old George Foreman before losing it by knockout to Lennox Lewis in his next fight.  Briggs gets credit for his toughness, but not for his effort in terms of trying to win the fight.  Meanwhile, the referee, ring doctor, commissioners, and Briggs’ corner were nearly accomplices to homicide as he was systematically destroyed by the more skilled and stronger Klitschko, and left the ring with a concussion and multiple fractures in his face.  Briggs hasn’t been a legitimate opponent for elite contenders since he lost his WBO belt to Sultan Ibragimov in June 2007, so this really amounted to a stay-busy fight for the elder Klitschko.  Oh well.  The only way Vitali can significantly improve on his lofty standing at this point is to fight his brother, which won’t happen.

Alexander Povetkin, who is ranked #3, continued to waste time in his career with an unremarkable 5th round knockout of barely-ever-was has-been Teke Oruh in Russia.

Mammoth Russian prospect Alexander Ustinov scored 5 knockdowns en route to a 2nd round TKO of overwhelmed journeyman Oezcan Cetinkaya in Hamburg.

And last but certainly not least, former Light Heavyweight Champion Antonio Tarver made a big jump in weight and, at 41, seemed to carry the pounds fairly well in winning a one-sided decision over former fringe contender Nagy Aguilera.  Aguilera is no longer a serious enough player in the division to earn Tarver a ranking, but this was a good first test that Tarver passed with room to spare.
