Light Heavyweight: 2011, Jan 24-30

Saturday in France, #17 Danny McIntosh managed to beat #14 Thierry Karl in a bit of a bizarre fight.  In full disclosure, I saw this on YouTube (see it here) and it was the first time I’d seen either fighter fight.  I must say I was disappointed, particularly in Karl.  The Frenchman, whose record indicates a devastating puncher, stood straight up and hacked with what looked like arm punches most of the time.  He bounced around the ring like an amateur.  Meanwhile, McIntosh clowned around and goofed off, seemingly completely uninterested in winning, for  most of the first 10 rounds.  He didn’t work behind the jab to get inside, and was seemingly being broken down by the taller Karl, despite the latter’s flaws.  However, McIntosh got it together in the 11th, tagging Karl and chasing him around the ring until the Frenchman collapsed to the canvas just as referee Guido Cavallieri was stopping the fight, apparently due to Karl turning away from the punches with hands down.  So I must say that I don’t think McIntosh is really as good as the ranking he earned in the fight.  Nevertheless, these guys had both proven worthy of their rankings based on their accomplishments, and McIntosh gets full credit here for his greatest one yet.

With his big win, McIntosh is launched from #17 to #13.  Dmitry Sukhotski, who beat a just slightly lesser opponent in #16 Alexei Kuziemski last year, is forced down one spot to #14.  Ismayl Sillakh moves up one slot to McIntosh’s former position, and Otis Griffin also moves up, to #18.  Thierry Karl- whose career-defining wins over a gatekeeper and a prospect were both over a year ago now- tumbles all the way to #19 with the loss, just hanging on ahead of Luis Garcia, whose two principal wins were not quite as prestigious despite their comparative recentness.

For comparison, here are the current Ring Magazine Ratings:

The Week Ahead: Just a couple minor fights involving top-50 fighters this week: on Friday, Polish prospect Andrzej Fonfara fights American journeyman Adam Jaco in Chicago.

And on Saturday, undefeated prospect Marcus Oliveira- who actually owns a win over current #18 Otis Griffin- fights former fringe contender Demetrius Jenkins, who has lost his last 10 fights dating back to 2002 and 12 of his last 13 dating back to 2001.  This fight will take place on the undercard of Bradley-Alexander in Detroit, but will not be part of HBO’s broadcast.

THE WEEK AHEAD: Another quiet week in the division.

Heavyweight: 2011, Jan 24-30

For those who care, here’s a quick review of the sorry PPV card from West Virginia this weekend.  No I didn’t buy it.  I hope you didn’t either.  There’s supporting boxing, and then there’s stupidity.

In the “main event,” 48-year-old former champion Evander Holyfield was getting tagged by journeyman Sherman Williams before apparently quitting when offered a free pass by a run-of-the-mill cut on his right eyebrow.  The fight was declared a no contest.

Gatekeeper Monte Barrett put on a surprisingly horrible performance against sub-.500 Charles Davis, and escaped with only a majority draw.  Looks like he should have stuck by his retirement talk after out-fighting David Tua last year.

Kevin Johnson, who embarrassed himself against Vitali Klitschko not long ago, at least did better against 7-foot 300 pounder Julius Long, winning all but one of 8 rounds on all three cards.

Cedric Boswell, a 41-year old gatekeeper-level guy who has not lost since 2003 (to Jameel McCline) but inexplicably didn’t fight anyone worth a damn after beating hot unbeaten prospect Roman Greenberg in summer ’08- a win that should have gotten him a big fight that could lead to a title shot, did about as expected, stopping journeyman Dominique Alexander in 2.

Because of the weak opposition each man faced, they of course did not enter the rankings.

For Comparison, here are the Current Ring Magazine Heavyweight Rankings:
Champ: Wladimir Klitschko
1) Vitali Klitschko
2) David Haye
3) Alexander Povetkin

THE WEEK AHEAD:  There are a few notable heavyweights fighting this weekend.  #11 Chris Arreola fights Joey Abell in a tune-up fight Friday on ESPN2.  Abell has never fought anyone near Arreola’s level but still has 4 losses, so you can guess roughly how this fight will go down.  Still, I guess we can let Arreola have another easy fight, given his recent struggles with broken hands, without giving him too much guff over it.

Undefeated Cuban prospect Luis Ortiz- who has just five professional fights but has already proven himself formidable against always-tough journeyman Zack Page- steps back down in competition by fighting 3-5 nobody Ruben Rivera in Tampa.

Finally, Samoan gatekeeper Alex Leapai- whose career has gotten a boost from a recent string of three wins over decent journeymen- fights a somewhat lesser journeyman in American Jason Barnett in Queensland, Australia.

Alejandro Berrio’s fight and the entire Oklahoma City card it was scheduled to appear on was apparently canceled on short notice.  I really couldn’t find any mention of when or why, either.  Very strange.  Prospects Edwin Rodriguez and Aaron Pryor squared off on Friday Night Fights this week, and frankly Pryor was more or less robbed.  Now there were about 5 legitimately close rounds, so it’s not completely inconceivable that Rodriguez could somewhat fairly eek out a victory, but there’s no way Rodriguez could possibly have hoped for better than a 96-93 or- if we’re really stretching it- a 97-92 score, and that’s including an absolutely atrocious point deduction by referee Sam Burgos against Pryor.  I don’t know if it was an ethnic thing or a house fighter thing, but Burgos clearly wanted Rodriguez to win and helped make it happen.  He should face consequences for his actions.  Meanwhile, to review the judges:
Michael Pernick (96-93 Rodriguez): I totally disagree with this score, but I could imagine myself seeing it this way on a different day given the number of close rounds.  But with that score he gave all the legitimate toss-up rounds to Rodriguez.
Rocky Young (97-92 Rodriguez): Young’s score, I feel confident in saying, is wrong.  I don’t think 97-92 indicates gross incompetence or crookedness, but Young gave all the real toss-up rounds AND, I assume, one fairly close but fairly clear Pryor round to Rodriguez.  This is the kind of score you could chalk up to stuff like minor subconscious bias or the effects of crowd noise.
Richard Green (98-91 Rodriguez): An indefensible scorecard.  Plain and simple.  I checked Green’s record and there aren’t any fights at least in recent years that I’ve seen to critique him on one way or another.  The only thing I found of note on his record in the past few years was that he was on the losing side of the split decision in Geale-Mundine, which I did not see.  Being as fair as possible to Green on this occasion, all I can say is that he gave Rodriguez every possible benefit of the doubt and completely botched at least one round.  I think it’s a bit premature to call him an awful or crooked judge overall, but I do know that I’ll be watching him closely out of curiosity in the future.

Even with a clear win, Rodriguez probably would not have earned a ranking yet, and certainly did not do so by receiving a bit of a gift here.  Also, Rodriguez was a half-pound over the divisional limit and outweighed Pryor by 3 pounds.

Light Heavyweight: 2011, Jan 17-23

No in-ring activity this week, but recent changes to Boxrec.com’s rating system have occasioned me to re-evaluate the records of some ranked fighters and make some re-alignments among the second half of the top 20.

Last week’s #17 Gayrat Ahmedov takes the biggest blow in the re-configuration.  Ahmedov has one major victory in his career: a first round knockout of Dallas Vargas.  Vargas’ record, which is littered with its fair share of victories over weak or untested competition,  suffers under the new Boxrec system, and Ahmedov’s does as a direct result, too, as he tumbles from the rankings after 25 straight weeks.

Danny McIntosh moves up to replace Ahmedov at #17 largely on the strength of his knockout of Tony Oakey back in February.  His future position in the rankings, of course, rests heavily upon his upcoming bout with #14 Thierry Karl.

Ukrainian prospect Ismayl Sillakh debuts at #18 on the strength of two wins in the last year over gatekeepers Daniel Judah and Rayco Saunders.  Sillakh has a very intriguing matchup in early March with fellow undefeated prospect Yordanis Despaigne.

Veteran Otis Griffin of the USA also debuts at #19, largely on the strength of his May stoppage of fringe contender Byron Mitchell.  Griffin would have been ranked before now- and higher- had he not lost in three consecutive notable fights prior to that victory.

Ireland-based Cuban defector Luis Garcia outdistances countryman Despaigne for now- having beaten two significant opponents so far to Despaigne’s one- also making his debut at #20.

Mariano Plotinsky falls out of the rankings in large part because he hasn’t had a worthwhile win since March of 2009.  Tony Bellew also drops out because his victory over Ovill McKenzie just isn’t quite enough to overcome the record of Garcia under the new system.

For comparison, here are the current Ring Magazine Ratings:

The Week Ahead: #14 Thierry Karl takes on #18 Danny McIntosh in France on Saturday in what might be the most significant fight in any division this week.  The winner will probably be at least close to the top 10.

Cruiserweight: 2011, Jan 17-23

Rogelio Rossi knocked out Cesar Crenz Friday in Buenos Aires.  Both guys were really lower-tier gatekeepers coming into the fight, but the division is thin enough that this win qualifies Rossi for a spot in the top 20.  Due in part to Boxrec’s new points system, I’ve re-examined the lower part of my rankings and a minor shakeup has been produced in the top 20.

#16 Pawel Kolodziej has really beaten only one mid-range gatekeeper, and did so over a year ago.  He drops out of the rankings, as he was getting excessive mileage out of that win.  Enzo Maccarinelli moves up to claim the vacant position.

Alexander Alexeev re-enters the rankings at #17.  He also hasn’t won a major fight in over a year, but had a very nice 2009.  The overall quality of his significant wins aren’t sky high and he falls short when he faces the upper echelon of fringe contenders, but he has beaten more than his share of gatekeepers and even one fringe contender and deserves to be rewarded for it.

Julio Cesar Matthews basically built his ranking on one decision win in only a 6 round fight.  Fair enough.  But he’s now in jail and probably won’t even fight until he’s been inactive a year.  He’s dead weight in the rankings, and accordingly drops out of them.  Matt Godfrey moves up a spot to #18 to take his place, and Lateef Kayode also advances one spot to replace Godfrey.  Rogelio Rossi’s win this weekend moves him into the last remaining spot at #20.  He has some mixed results in his career, but he made a minor statement with the stoppage of Crenz, which is enough to be ranked in this particular division.

THE WEEK AHEAD: There was supposed to be a big battle between #1 Steve Cunningham and #14 Enad Licina, but the entire card was canceled before I wrote this when headlining middleweight Sebastian Sylvester pulled out with an illness.  But the fight has apparently now been rescheduled for what is now shaping up as a mega-card on February 12.  That card will now feature at least 7 rated fighters between Heavyweight and Super Middleweight, and at least 2 or 3 more you’ve probably heard of.  With the delay, however, this week will be quiet in the division.

Thursday’s card in Oklahoma City evidently did not come off as planned- though I can’t find any explanation for why not- and thus Jason Estrada’s scheduled fight with Robert Hawkins also disappeared into oblivion.
Meanwhile, it occurs to me that #20 Edmund Gerber has not fought anyone worth fighting in nearly a year, and is currently scheduled to fight another no-hoper in Paul Butlin.  Alexander Dimitrenko was recently dropped from the rankings in favor of Gerber, but I now believe that to be a mistake.  Dimitrenko has been woefully inactive against decent competition as well, but has much better wins on his resume a couple years ago than Gerber does a year ago.  As a result, the tall Ukrainian returns to the rankings at #20 for the time being, while Gerber exits.

THE WEEK AHEAD:  One card in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia features 4 notable heavyweights.  Too bad none of them are fighting each other.   48-year-old former champion Evander Holyfield- still arguably a fringe contender- takes on journeyman Sherman Williams.  Once-beaten prospect Kevin Johnson, whose claim to fame was an embarrassingly passive performance in a beating at the hands of Vitali Klitschko, fights the very tall but mostly inept Julius Long.  Tough gatekeeper Monte Barrett battles weak journeyman southpaw Charles Davis.  Finally, gatekeeper Cedric Boswell gets perhaps the easiest night of all against Dominique Alexander.

31-year-old Uraguayan prospect Noe Alcoba took out old former prospect Gustavo Magellanes of Mexico in Uraguay on Sunday, stopping Magellanes and presumably his comeback attempt in the third round.  Magellanes suffered his first career loss to Khoren Gevor in late 2005 and didn’t fight again until this past June.

THE WEEK AHEAD: Gatekeeper Alejandro Berrio will be fighting one of the worst Cuban defectors of all time in Ivan Ledon on Thursday in Oklahoma City, though I’m not sure if the fight will be at 168 or 175.  Then on Friday we’ll see hot prospect Edwin Rodriguez battling fellow prospect Aaron Pryor, Jr., who despite his famous name and recent win over Dyah Davis is probably a class or two below Rodriguez.  That fight will be televised on ShoBox.

A fight that Boxrec.com expected to be in the light heavyweight division between Middleweight contender Marco Antonio Rubio and super middleweight prospect Wilson Santana, but the fight was contested well under the Super Middleweight limit.  Rubio stopped Santana in the 8th round.  This will not earn Rubio a rating at this weight, since Santana was pretty darned unproven.

THE WEEK AHEAD: Noe Alcoba- who despite being 31 is still more-or-less a prospect and has been beaten only by Felix Sturm- will battle 29-1 Mexican Gustavo Magellanes, once a prospect somewhere between 147 and 160.  Magellanes has been defeated only by Khoren Gevor (at Middleweight), but this is only his second fight since that loss over 5 years ago.  Alcoba probably shouldn’t have too much trouble with the much older man.  This fight will be Sunday night in Uraguay.
