Cruiserweight: 2014, May 12-18

Former light heavyweight fringe contender Thierry Karl, who had been cutting a vicious swath through the European level at 175 back around 2009, returned from a 2-year layoff on Wednesday in his native France, taking a 8-round points decision over 9-9 low-level journeyman Tamas Bajzath.  That’s got to be seen as a disappointment, considering that at his best, he was stopping the likes of Nadjib Mohammedi.  Boxrec has him well outside the top 50 with his layoff, though I think that’s a little harsh given how thin cruiserweight really is.

 

Inactive contender BJ Flores got in the ring for the first time in more than 18 months on Saturday on the Stiverne-Arreola undercard in LA, knocking out total non-entity Adam Collins in less than 2 minutes.  Unfortunately for Flores and his fans, he came in more than 5 pounds over the cruiserweight limit, and is thus not eligible for a re-ranking.

Gassiev is an undefeated native of Vladikavkaz who is coming off his best win thus far in his career against quality journeyman Ismail Abdoul back in February.  Tevdorashvili is a Georgian journeyman who has been in with some decent names, but seldom escapes from that type of fight without a loss.  He was beaten by Abdoul back in 2012.

 

Thursday
Stivens Bujaj vs. Junior Wright; Brighton Beach, New York; Comcast Sportsnet (US)
Bujaj is an undefeated Albanian who makes his home in New York.  He’s flashed solid power against middling opposition, and is coming off a TKO over journeyman Victor Barragan.  Wright is also undefeated, but has been in softer than Bujaj so far.  He’s knocked out all but one of his opponents so far, and comes off a 4th round knockout of travelling midwestern opponent-type Galen Brown.  Bujaj has proven more than Wright so far, but this one could go either way.  I’ve seen neither guy so far, personally.  It appears this will be televised by Comcast Sportsnet.  I don’t know what that is, to be honest, but I assume it’s only available to Comcast cable subscribers.  Not sure if that’s national or local only.  Hopefully I can see a video one way or another.

 

Friday
#17 Nuri Seferi vs. Tamas Lodi; Hamburg, Germany; Eurosport 2
Seferi, of Albania, looks to rebound from a fight he was lucky to escape without a loss against Gusmyr Perdomo, just over a month ago.  Lodi is a Hungarian one-loss prospect.  He was destroyed in his first serious fight against Ilunga Makabu, whom he had no business fighting at that point.  In his most difficult match-up apart from that, back in November, Lodi got what was probably a slight upset in knocking out undefeated Janne Forsman.  Seferi ought to win this, but I wouldn’t totally rule out the Hungarian, given recent form.

 

Saturday
#10 LHW Nathan Cleverly vs. Shawn Corbin; Cardiff, Wales; Sky (UK)
Cleverly makes his long-awaited debut at cruiserweight, in a fight that’s more or less intended to set up a showdown with bitter English rival Tony Bellew.  Corbin is the very definition of a mid-level journeyman, whose crowning achievement was a shocking decision that ended the would-be comeback of a faded Wayne Braithwaite back in 2012.

Karl was a major contender at light heavyweight when I began these rankings a few years back, but his career was badly derailed by a comprehensive beating at the hands of Danny McIntosh in early 2011.  He hasn’t had a consequential fight since, and this will do nothing to change that.

 

B.J. Flores vs. Adam Collins; Los Angeles, California; Off TV
This is all about Flores simply getting back in the ring.  He’s a borderline top 10 contender when active, and perhaps underrated at that status.  Yet he hasn’t fought since October 2012.  If he makes 200 for the fight, though, and avoids what would be a disastrous loss, he’ll easily be back in the rankings next week.  His opponent is a very low-level journeyman from Ohio.

Light Heavyweight: 2012, Jan 23-29

Thierry Karl is removed from the rankings this week, as he has not competed at 175 in over a year now.  Dyah Davis re-enters at #20 after 3 weeks out, as Luis Garcia moves up one spot to #19.  No in-ring action to report.

The WBC has ordered a Dawson rematch.  There is much speculation floating around that the matchup is extremely unmarketable due to the poor PPV numbers of the first fight.  Also, Dawson has unequivocally stated his desire for a Pascal rematch next.  But on the other hand, Hopkins is under contract for another fight with HBO, and it’s hard to come up with anyone realistic that would make a more natural opponent for Hopkins.

In a fight in January that has no bearing on his ranking here, Davis dominated a guy that outboxed Kelly Pavlik.

 

The Week Ahead: A couple fights to mention on Saturday.  Former top 10 contender Juergen Braehmer of Germany returns to action for the first time since April 2010 (though he’s been known to pull out at the last minute, so we’ll have to wait and see) against Spanish journeyman Jose Maria Guerrero in Germany.  Chances are he’ll enter the rankings at some level just by fighting in general.  Later in Wisconsin, local undefeated prospect Marcus Oliveira takes on former contender Antwun Echols in an 8-rounder.  Oliveira had a respectable amateur career with about 200 wins, but got a pretty late start in the pros which finds him, at almost 33, just now creeping into the top 50, give or take.  Echols is a 40-year-old former contender who is about 9 years overdue for retirement.  Commissions really should think twice about licensing the guy, as he’s been stopped in 6 of his last 8 fights- none of which were against real world-beaters.  Oliveira is pretty good about getting guys out of there, and will probably make that 7 of 9.

Cruiserweight: 2012, Feb 27- Mar 4

Former light heavyweight fringe contender Thierry Karl fought for- get this- the WBF International Cruiserweight title (note it’s not even the WBF world title) on Friday in his native France against Georgian journeyman Sandro Siproshvili, and escaped with a decision that awarded him between 7 and 10 rounds of a 10-rounder, depending on which judge you ask.

 

Former top contender Wayne Braithwaite of Guyana fought as a small  heavyweight against unproven fringe prospect Shawn Cox of Barbados, in Braithwaite’s home country, and was shockingly sparked out in the first round, having failed to rise from his 3rd knockdown at the hands of the younger Cox.  It’s hard to view Cox as a world-beater considering he lost to Salvatore Erittu, a fellow undefeated prospect that has gone nowhere since that fight over two years ago, and so this has got to be seen as a sure sign that Braithwaite- the only man to ever beat Yoan Pablo Hernandez so far- is finished.  In lesser news, Philadelphia fringe contender Garrett Wilson stopped no-hoper Pedro Martinez early in round 3 of a scheduled 8 in the hometown of both fighters.

 

Finally, on Sunday, undefeated Ukrainian Dmitro Kucher walked away with a win in Kiev when his opponent- solid Czech journeyman Lubos Suda, retired with an injury following the 8th round of a 10-rounder.

 

It’s tempting to consider rating Cox based on his sensational performance against Braithwaite, but I don’t feel that I can do so at the moment.  Braithwaite is a good 2 years removed from his last prior fight, and almost 4 years removed from his last significant victory.  Given that fact and Cox’s less than stellar prior record of accomplishment, it is extremely unclear whether Braithwaite entered the ring as anything like a top 50 fighter, and even if so, I get out of having to rate the fight based on the fact that both guys came in roughly 10 full pounds over the cruiserweight limit.  This result definitely makes Cox a prospect to watch, but at this time I think it would be premature to give him any consideration for a ranking.  Therefore, no movement this week.

THE WEEK AHEAD: This is a pretty busy week in the division.


Things get started on Friday, when former Light Heavyweight fringe contender Thierry Karl of France fights Georgian journeyman Sandro Siproshvili for a title so inconsequential that even the WBF admits it’s not a world title.

 

Saturday sees the return of former top contender Wayne Braithwaite, who returns from a long layoff against Shawn Cox- a one-loss fringe prospect from Barbados- in Braithwaite’s native Guyana.  Later in the evening, fringe contender Garrett Wilson of Philadelphia takes on former Expos and Red Sox ace Pedro Martinez in an eight rounder.  Wait.  Maybe it’s a different Pedro Martinez, but this one is probably not any better at boxing than the future hall of fame pitcher, judging by the skimpy 6-4 record against entirely nondescript opposition.

 

The week’s action wraps up on Sunday, when undefeated Ukrainian prospect Dmitro Kucher fights serviceable Czech journeyman Lubos Suda in Kiev.

Light Heavyweight: 2011, Nov 7-13

I made a bit of a mistake last week in advertising Sillakh-Ismailov.  Evidently the fight was never going to be fought at 175, which I should have known based on Ismailov’s history of never having fought below cruiserweight.  I’ve already published my cruiserweight update and the fight is inconsequential to the rankings, so I’ll just mention here.  Suffice it to say Sillakh continued Ismailov’s streak of stoppage losses with a 4th round TKO.

 

Allan Green won a comfortable decision over local favorite Sebastian Demers in Quebec City on Saturday.  Demers came in just a shade over 168, and while he was probably still a top-50 fighter at that weight, I’m not sure he does a ton for Green’s resume at 175.

 

 Undefeated prospect Marcus Oliveira, who has been fighting infrequently against poor opposition, stopped Chris Eppley- a 10-1 fighter who has fought exclusively bums- in four rounds.

 

In a fight that was announced very late, #18 Thierry Karl fought the awful Mile Nikolic at cruiserweight, knocking him out in 1.

 

All of this action, however, pales in comparison to non-action on behalf of prospect and #19 contender Luis Garcia, who has been inactive for a year, doesn’t have a fight scheduled, and accordingly is bounced from the rankings due to inactivity.  Marcus Johnson returns to the rankings at #20 after three weeks away.
