Heavyweight: 2013, Apr 29- May 5

Posted in Heavyweight, Rankings with tags , , , , , , , on April 30, 2013 by danboxing
There were no fewer than 5 fights involving top 50 heavyweights this week.  Here is a rundown, in order of expected importance.

#15 Chris Arreola returned to the ring to fight his best opponent, by far, in the 3 years since his close loss to Tomasz Adamek when his long-delayed fight with #19 Bermane Stiverne finally came off on Saturday in Ontario, California.  The favored Arreola won the first round and avoided being hit by anything of note, but Stiverne got into the fight in the second before taking it over in the third.  Just as the bell was about to ring to end that round , Stiverne caught Arreola with a huge right hand that all at once dropped him, hurt him, and broke his nose.  Arreola had little answer thereafter, as Stiverne was more active (the one aspect that Arreola very clearly seemed to have in his favor going into the fight), moved well behind the jab, had demonstrably more one-shot power, and appeared in significantly better condition.  Arreola mounted what was in many ways a last stand in the 9th to easily carry the round, but faded ever the more quickly thereafter, as Stiverne beat him from pillar to post in the 12th to put a cap on the fight.  Stiverne won by scores of 117-110 (x2) and 118-109 (my score, as well), to take the biggest win of his career so far.  And he looked good in doing it.

In a stereotypical crossroads fight earlier on Saturday, we got a stereotypical result on the Khan-Diaz undercard in Sheffield, England.  2008 Olympic Bronze Medalist Deontay Wilder, who had 27 (mostly empty) knockouts in 27 fights, finally got one worth having, battering recently resurgent fringe contender Audley Harrison to the canvas (perhaps even after he was already on it) before referee Terry O’Connor correctly stopped it after Harrison rose on wobbly legs.  The end came just 70  seconds into the contest.

Gatekeeper and former Vitali Klitschko opponent Kevin Johnson, who has been slipping lately, may have made himself somewhat relevant again by stopping one-loss Kiwi prospect Solomon Haumono in the 10th round in Melbourne, Australia.  Johnson, according to the report I read from East Side Boxing, largely dominated the fight before catching Haumono with a perfect right hand in the 10th that dropped him and prompted referee Tony Marretta to stop the fight without a count.

On the Martinez-Murray undercard in Buenos Aires, Russian undefeated prospect Magomed Abdusalamov put an old-fashioned whoopin’ on local journeyman Sebastian Ceballos, knocking the bigger man down 3 times in the 61 second-long fight.

On the undercard of Arreola-Stiverne, another significant upset as 2-loss prospect Eric Molina- best known for badly hurting Chris Arreola in early 2012 right before Arreola came back to knock him out in the first round- scored a unanimous decision over Tony Grano.  Grano has been viewed a rugged journeyman throughout most of his career, but came in as a top 50 gatekeeper type after a victory over DaVarryl Williamson in his last fight.  Molina was knocked out less than 2 minutes into his pro career, but went on an 18-fight winning streak thereafter against mostly weak opposition before stepping up far too steeply against Arreola.  As for the fight itself (which I have been unable to find video of), my source (Philboxing.com) leaves the impression the fight was largely boring, with Molina controlling range and keeping Grano at bay, dropping him once in the 5th but failing to follow up.  He appeared to be cruising to an easy victory but nondescript victory when, in the final round, he was dropped and badly hurt by a tired but determined Grano, and had to run and hold on for dear life to survive to the bell and secure the victory.  Scores were 116-110 (x2) and 114-112.

The two biggest winners of the night both made plenty of hay from their victories.  Stiverne advances to #12, his rise halted only by the fact that Johnathon Banks has beaten a #11 contender in Seth Mitchell, coupled with the fact that Stiverne drew, within a relevant time frame, with a very lowly regarded journeyman, while Banks only similarly struggled at heavyweight with a much better journeyman in Jason Gavern.  Wilder debuts at #14, halted by Tony Thompson, who has recently knocked out the man, in David Price, who knocked Wilder’s crowning opponent out in almost the exact same amount of time, and has also beaten a couple other top 50 guys, while losing only to the Champion in the past several years.  Arreola tumbles way out of the rankings.  Tony Thompson falls from #12 to #13.  Last week’s #13 and #14 Robert Helenius and Alexander Dimitrenko each fall two spots.  This is coincidentally also the week that last week’s #16 Denis Boytsov’s 2nd best win (out of a total of 2 significant ones) became more than 5 years old and thus no longer eligible for consideration.  With just his nearly 4 year old win over Taras Bidenko left to look at, Boytsov tumbles to #19.  No other changes.  Sorry if those weren’t enough.

Dan’s Top 20 (Weeks in current position-weeks in top 10 (if applicable)-weeks in top 20)
Champ: Wladimir Klitschko (201-414-414)
Last Fight: 11/10/2012- UD12 Mariusz Wach (UNR)
Next Fight: 5/4/2013- vs. Francesco Pianeta (UNR)
Wlad will be fighting Italian fringe contending prospect Francesco Pianeta in Mannheim, Germany.  It’s hard to knock Pianeta as a fighter because he remains undefeated and was knocked off track by a bout with cancer a couple years ago, but it’s hard to get excited about any fight that, if the underdog won, would be considered the greatest upset in the history of the Heavyweight Championship.
1) Vitali Klitschko (238-238-238)
Last Fight: 9/8/2012- TKO4 Manuel Charr (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
After speculation went wild over a Daily Beast article that seemed to be hinting at an impending retirement announcement, Vitali seems to have every intention of continuing his career.  He says he may eventually fight David Haye, but implies he would at least fight his mandatory challenger (the Stiverne-Arreola winner) first.
2) Tyson Fury (2-93-93)
Last Fight: 4/20/2013- KO7 #3 Steve Cunningham
Next Fight: Unknown
Fury is now suddenly the most proven heavyweight not named Klitschko, and will likely get a chance to add to his resume against Kubrat Pulev next, as an eliminator for Wlad in the IBF.
3) David Haye (2-42-42)
Last Fight: 7/14/2012- TKO5 #6 Dereck Chisora
Next Fight: 6/29/2013- vs. Manuel Charr (UNR)
Haye had some good fighters willing to fight him- including Eddie Chambers and possibly Kubrat Pulev.  The disappointment I feel at learning that he will instead fight borderline fringe contender Manuel Charr can not be overstated.
4) Alexander Povetkin (42-288-288)
Last Fight: 9/29/2012- TKO2 Hasim Rahman (UNR)
Next Fight: 5/17/2013- vs. Andrzej Wawrzyk (UNR)
Povetkin is set to fight mediocre-looking undefeated Polish prospect Andrzej Wawrzyk in Moscow, on the Lebedev-Jones undercard.
5) Steve Cunningham (2-19-19)
Last Fight: 4/20/2013- L (KO7) vs. #6 Tyson Fury
Next Fight: Unknown
Only time will tell where Cunningham goes form here.  His hopes for a title shot are dashed at least for awhile.  Perhaps a trilogy with Adamek would make sense at this point.
6Tomasz Adamek (2-158-158)
Last Fight: 12/22/2012- W (SD12)* vs. CW #4 Steve Cunningham (Robbery)
Next Fight: Unknown
Word is that Adamek will likely be fighting still relatively unproven Newark prospect Joe Hanks on June 14 in that town that they both currently call home.
7) Eddie Chambers (19-46-46)
Last Fight: 6/16/2012- L(UD12) vs. #3 Tomasz Adamek
Next Fight: Unknown
Chambers seems willing to fight anyone at heavyweight or cruiserweight, but you can’t have a fight with just one guy willing.
8) Kubrat Pulev (19-52-129)
Last Fight: 9/29/2012- KO11 Alexander Ustinov (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
After negotiatings to fight David Haye failed, it now seems likely Pulev has got Tyson Fury next, for a likely shot at Wladimir Klitschko in early 2014.
9) Dereck Chisora (19-74-137)
Last Fight: 4/20/2013- TKO9 Hector Avila (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Chisora put on a world-class snoozer against Avila, but still managed to bag a late stoppage.
10) Odlanier Solis (6-6-153)
Last Fight: 3/22/2013- UD12 Leif Larsen (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Solis’ promoter wants to get him back in the ring within 3 months after the Larsen fight.
11) Johnathon Banks (6-24)
Last Fight: 11/17/2012- TKO2 #11 Seth Mitchell
Next Fight: 6/22/2013- vs. Seth Mitchell (UNR)
The Mitchell rematch- postponed due to a broken thumb by Banks- has been reset for the Malignaggi-Broner undercard on June 22.
12) Bermane Stiverne (1-9)
Last Fight: 4/27/2013- UD12 #15 Chris Arreola
Next Fight: Unknown
Stiverne is hoping that Vitali doesn’t retire so that he can try and do the honors himself.  At this point he’d be a pretty credible opponent, too.
13) Tony Thompson (1-153)
Last Fight: 2/23/2013- TKO2 David Price (UNR)
Next Fight: 7/6/2013- vs. David Price (UNR)
After originally saying he’d only fight David Price in a rematch if Price came to the US, Thompson has instead agreed to fight in Price’s Liverpool backyard again.
14) Deontay Wilder (1-1)
Last Fight: 4/27/2013- TKO1 Audley Harrison (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Wilder wants a crack at Fury next, but the Brit is likely to go for Pulev instead, since the winner gets Wlad.
15) Robert Helenius (1-153)
Last Fight: 3/23/2013- W*(UD10) vs. Michael Sprott (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Helenius’ team confirms another hand injury.  They say it will take 6 weeks to heal, despite rumors that it is more serious.
16) Alexander Dimitrenko (1-120)
Last Fight: 3/9/2013- UD8 Ivica Perkovic (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Dimitrenko’s future is in doubt after he struggled mightily to survive a heavy knockdown and outpoint typically inept journeyman Ivica Perkovic.
17) Vyacheslav Glazkov (9-19)
Last Fight: 2/23/2013- Draw* (SD10) vs. Malik Scott (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Glazkov got the benefit of the doubt in every close round from two of the judges against Scott.  It was just about as close to a robbery as you can get without me calling it that.
18) Malik Scott (9-10)
Last Fight: 2/23/2013- Draw* (SD10) vs. #19 Vyacheslav Glazkov
Next Fight: Unknown
Scott is in Moscow at last check, sparring with Povetkin and Lebedev.
19) Denis Boytsov (1-202)
Last Fight: 2/15/2013- UD8 Samir Kurtagic (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Boytsov’s 2nd best win- over Robert Hawkins- is now over 5 years old, and he has slipped a few spots as a result.  He’s getting closer to obscurity with each passing month.
20) Franklin Lawrence (9-9)
Last Fight: 1/25/2013- Mark Brown (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Lawrence reportedly pulled out of a planned (and very good) crossroads fight with prospect Bryant Jennings.

THE WEEK AHEAD: The Heavyweight Championship is on the line Saturday in Mannheim, as long-reigning Champ Wladimir Klitschko takes on a relatively non-threatening opponent in undefeated prospect Francesco Pianeta.   Pianeta is unofficially my #22 contender, a cancer survivor, and a former Klitschko sparring partner.  To put in perspective just how light of a challenge this appears to be, here’s a comparison: Buster Douglas’ defeat of Mike Tyson is often viewed as one of the most shocking upsets in sports history.  That fight was Champ vs. #7 Contender.  This is Champ vs. #22.  A Pianeta win would be without question the greatest upset (in terms of rankings differential, at least) in the history of the Heavyweight Championship.

On the undercard, undefeated but rather inactive Cuban prospect Mike Perez finally gets back in the ring against journeyman Travis Walker.  Perez was the dominant winner of the first Prizefighter International Heavyweight tournament in 2011.  Walker was arguably the co-favorite for the most recent installment, but laid an egg in the first round of the tourney against Derric Rossy.

Junior Middleweight: 2012, Aug 20-26

Not really a lot to talk about in the stay-busy fight between #2 Carlos Molina and journeyman Damian Frias on Friday Night Fights.  I gave Frias one round that I thought he clearly won, but the judges didn’t even give him that much credit.  It was basically a dominant effort for Molina, as you’d have expected.  No changes this week.

Dan’s Top 20 (Weeks in Current Position-Weeks in Top 10 if applicable-Weeks in Top 20)
Champ: None
1) Saul Alvarez (16-77-92)
Last Fight: 5/5/2012- UD12 Shane Mosley (UNR)
Next Fight: 9/15/2012- vs. WW#? Josesito Lopez
Canelo will presumably be paying well for the privilege of making Josesito Lopez- a natural 140 pounder- move up to 154 after he made his bones at 147 with a shocking upset of would-be Alvarez opponent Victor Ortiz.  He is also planning a possible subsequent bout for December 8 already.
2) Carlos Molina (16-59-74)
Last Fight: 8/17/2012- UD10 Damian Frias (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
3) Cornelius Bundrage (22-107-107)
Last Fight: 6/30/2012- TKO7 #11 Cory Spinks
Next Fight: Unknown
Bundrage has replaced Manny Steward as his manager (but not trainer), and is hoping to fight Cotto on Cotto’s rumored 12/1 date.
4) Floyd Mayweather, Jr. (16-16-16)
Last Fight: 5/5/2012- UD12* #4 Miguel Cotto
Next Fight: Unknown
Floyd may be looking to fight Pacquiao in April.  But we’ve heard this before, and it wouldn’t even be as enticing this time after his so-so performance against Bradley and robbery win over Marquez.
5) Miguel Cotto (16-116-116)
Last Fight: 5/5/2012- L* (UD12) vs. WW #1 Floyd Mayweather, Jr.
Next Fight: Unknown
Cotto will likely fight at MSG on December 1, and he’s said it may be at 160.
6) Erislandy Lara (16-59-81)
Last Fight: 6/30/2012- UD10 Freddy Hernandez (UNR)
Next Fight: 11/10/2012- vs. #14 Vanes Martirosyan
After months of speculation, Lara-Martirosyan is finally on, November 10 in Vegas, with the winner to get a mandatory shot at Canelo.
7) James Kirkland (16-42-42)
Last Fight: 3/24/2012- W*(DQ10) vs. #6 Carlos Molina (Robbery)
Next Fight: Unknown
Kirkland bailed almost immediately on a fight he signed with Canelo, and says he plans to return in October or November.
8) Austin Trout (12-12-81)
Last Fight: 6/2/2012- UD12 #13 Delvin Rodriguez
Next Fight: Unknown
Trout might be looking to fight Roberto Garcia on Showtime in early September.
9) Alfredo Angulo (12-152-152)
Last Fight: 11/5/2011- L (TKO6) vs. James Kirkland (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Angulo has finally been released from detention by US immigration authorities after 7 months of chargeless detention for the heinous crime of overstaying his visa.  Absolutely unacceptable.  On the bright side, he’s planning to be back in the ring by the end of the year.
10) Gabriel Rosado (13-13-81)
Last Fight: 6/1/2013- TKO9 #19 Sechew Powell
Next Fight: 9/21/2012- vs. Charles Whittaker (UNR)
Rosado will get gatekeeper Charles Whittaker on September 21 in Bethlehem, PA, and the fight will be televised by NBC Sports.
11) Cory Spinks (10-30)
Last Fight: 6/30/2012- L (TKO7) vs. #3 Cornelius Bundrage
Next Fight: Unknown
Spinks failed to revenge his ugly 2010 TKO loss to Bundrage, but managed to look a little better and capture a round or two this time.
12) Sergey Rabchenko (10-10)
Last Fight: 6/16/2012- TKO7 #11 Ryan Rhodes
Next Fight: Unknown
Rabchenko is likely to defend his European title against France’s Cedric Vitu in his next fight.

16) Carlos Quintana (11-16)
Last Fight: 5/5/2012- TKO6 Deandre Latimore (UNR)

Quintana said he wanted Canelo in the immediate aftermath of his upset TKO of Deandre Latimore, and has since expressed interest in Cotto and Trout, as well.
17) Ryan Rhodes (10-148)
Last Fight: 6/16/2012- L (TKO7) vs. Sergey Rabchenko (UNR)

3) Cornelius Bundrage (21-106-106)
Last Fight: 6/30/2012- TKO7 #11 Cory Spinks

4) Floyd Mayweather, Jr. (15-15-15)

After Martirosyan originally turned down a shot at Lara, it now looks like that fight will indeed happen.  Vanes says he’s all-in for it now after Canelo went elsewhere.  The fight would serve as an eliminator for a Canelo shot.
7) James Kirkland (15-41-41)
Last Fight: 3/24/2012- W*(DQ10) vs. #6 Carlos Molina (Robbery)

9) Alfredo Angulo (11-151-151)
Last Fight: 11/5/2011- L (TKO6) vs. James Kirkland (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Troubling news.  Angulo has been detained by US authorities since at least January.  Apparently his only crime was being here on an expired Visa.  Don’t get me wrong.  I’m in favor of enforcing immigration laws, but to lock a guy up for months on end without so much as a trial?  Awful.  We’re rooting for you, Perro.
10) Gabriel Rosado (12-12-80)
Last Fight: 6/1/2013- TKO9 #19 Sechew Powell
Next Fight: 9/21/2012- vs. Charles Whittaker (UNR)

13) Delvin Rodriguez (12-57)
Last Fight: 6/2/2012- L (UD12) vs. #12 Austin Trout
Next Fight: Unknown
14) Vanes Martirosyan (10-63)
Last Fight: 2/4/2012- TKO3 Troy Lowry (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Martirosyan took the night off after his unworthy opponent Ryan Davis failed the pre-fight physical, and now has agreed to fight Lara- a fight he had previously turned down.  Purse bids are scheduled for 7/27.

Last Fight: 6/2/2012- W* (UD12) vs. Kris Carslaw (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Rose’s reign as British Champion hasn’t been the greatest- partly due to limited available opposition, and partly due to his own awful performance against Carslaw.
20) Roberto Garcia (9-10)
Last Fight: 3/23/2012- UD10 Antwone Smith (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown

The Week Ahead: In a late-breaking Friday Night Fights main event in Miami, Oklahoma, #2 Carlos Molina stays busy against mid-level journeyman Damian Frias of Miami by way of Cuba.

Junior Middleweight: 2012, Aug 6-12

Saturday in Atlanta, gatekeeper Grady Brewer got a bit of a gift, as a win was handed to him when his opponent, Cuban journeyman Giorbis Barthelemy was disqualified for biting Brewer’s neck.  I’m not sure if it was intended as vampirism or some form of strange romantic gesture, but it probably earned the already thuggish Barthelemy a suspension, and certainly helped him lose a fight that he was by all accounts leading.  With Barthelemy having lost his last fight to Charles Whittaker, he was not at a high enough level to help Brewer in his search for a renewed ranking.  No changes this week.

Dan’s Top 20 (Weeks in Current Position-Weeks in Top 10 if applicable-Weeks in Top 20)

10) Gabriel Rosado (11-11-79)
Last Fight: 6/1/2013- TKO9 #19 Sechew Powell
Next Fight: 9/21/2012- vs. Charles Whittaker (UNR)
Rosado will get gatekeeper Charles Whittaker on September 21 in Bethlehem, PA, and the fight will be televised by NBC Sports.
11) Cory Spinks (8-28)
Last Fight: 6/30/2012- L (TKO7) vs. #3 Cornelius Bundrage
Next Fight: Unknown
Spinks failed to revenge his ugly 2010 TKO loss to Bundrage, but managed to look a little better and capture a round or two this time.
12) Sergey Rabchenko (8-8)
Last Fight: 6/16/2012- TKO7 #11 Ryan Rhodes
Next Fight: Unknown
Rabchenko is likely to defend his European title against France’s Cedric Vitu in his next fight.
13) Delvin Rodriguez (11-56)
Last Fight: 6/2/2012- L (UD12) vs. #12 Austin Trout
Next Fight: Unknown
14) Vanes Martirosyan (9-62)
Last Fight: 2/4/2012- TKO3 Troy Lowry (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Martirosyan took the night off after his unworthy opponent Ryan Davis failed the pre-fight physical, and now has agreed to fight Lara- a fight he had previously turned down.  Purse bids are scheduled for 7/27.
15) Lukas Konecny (9-52)
Last Fight: 4/5/2012- TKO7 Salim Larbi (UNR)
Next Fight: 10/27/2012- vs. Zaurbek Baysangurov (UNR)
Konecny-Baysangurov will finally happen- October 27 in Kiev.
16) Carlos Quintana (9-14)
Last Fight: 5/5/2012- TKO6 Deandre Latimore (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Quintana said he wanted Canelo in the immediate aftermath of his upset TKO of Deandre Latimore, and has since expressed interest in Cotto and Trout, as well.
17) Ryan Rhodes (8-146)
Last Fight: 6/16/2012- L (TKO7) vs. Sergey Rabchenko (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Rhodes says he has no plans to retire after losing to Rabchenko.
18) Sechew Powell (8-125)
Last Fight: 6/1/2012- L (TKO9) vs. #10 Gabriel Rosado
Next Fight: Unknown
19) Brian Rose (8-36)
Last Fight: 6/2/2012- W* (UD12) vs. Kris Carslaw (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Rose’s reign as British Champion hasn’t been the greatest- partly due to limited available opposition, and partly due to his own awful performance against Carslaw.
20) Roberto Garcia (8-9)
Last Fight: 3/23/2012- UD10 Antwone Smith (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown

The Week Ahead: Nothing to report this week, as the Olympics wrap up.

Junior Middleweight: 2012, Jul 30- Aug 5

Posted in Junior Middleweight, Rankings with tags , , , , , , , on April 27, 2013 by danboxing
The Barthelemy-Brewer fight that had been scheduled for this past Saturday has been bumped back a week, so I’ll hopefully have a report on it in the next update, instead.  That being the case, no fights nor changes this time around.

Dan’s Top 20 (Weeks in Current Position-Weeks in Top 10 if applicable-Weeks in Top 20)
Champ: None
1) Saul Alvarez (13-74-89)
Last Fight: 5/5/2012- UD12 Shane Mosley (UNR)
Next Fight: 9/15/2012- vs. WW#? Josesito Lopez
Canelo will presumably be paying well for the privilege of making Josesito Lopez- a natural 140 pounder- move up to 154 after he made his bones at 147 with a shocking upset of would-be Alvarez opponent Victor Ortiz.  He is also planning a possible subsequent bout for December 8 already.
2) Carlos Molina (13-56-71)
Last Fight: 3/23/2012- L*(DQ10) vs. #3 James Kirkland (Robbery)
Next Fight: Unknown
Molina has said he’ll appeal his DQ against Kirkland.
3) Cornelius Bundrage (19-104-104)
Last Fight: 6/30/2012- TKO7 #11 Cory Spinks
Next Fight: Unknown
After removing whatever irrational doubt may have existed by dispatching Cory Spinks for a second time, Bundrage is hoping to secure a fight with Canelo.
4) Floyd Mayweather, Jr. (13-13-13)
Last Fight: 5/5/2012- UD12* #4 Miguel Cotto
Next Fight: Unknown
Floyd says he’s considering retirement after a tough fight with Cotto.  But more recently, future fights against Pacquiao, Canelo, Khan, Cotto, Guerrero, and Ortiz have been mentioned.  Of course Floyd is now in jail.
5) Miguel Cotto (13-113-113)
Last Fight: 5/5/2012- L* (UD12) vs. WW #1 Floyd Mayweather, Jr.
Next Fight: Unknown
Cotto will likely fight at MSG on December 1, and he’s said it may be at 160.
6) Erislandy Lara (13-56-78)
Last Fight: 6/30/2012- UD10 Freddy Hernandez (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
After Martirosyan originally turned down a shot at Lara, it now looks like that fight will indeed happen.  Vanes says he’s all-in for it now after Canelo went elsewhere, and a purse bid is scheduled for July 27.  The fight would serve as an eliminator for a Canelo shot.
7) James Kirkland (13-39-39)
Last Fight: 3/24/2012- W*(DQ10) vs. #6 Carlos Molina (Robbery)
Next Fight: Unknown
Kirkland bailed almost immediately on a fight he signed with Canelo, and says he plans to return in October or November.
8) Austin Trout (9-9-78)
Last Fight: 6/2/2012- UD12 #13 Delvin Rodriguez
Next Fight: Unknown
9) Alfredo Angulo (9-149-149)
Last Fight: 11/5/2011- L (TKO6) vs. James Kirkland (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Troubling news.  Angulo has been detained by US authorities since at least January.  Apparently his only crime was being here on an expired Visa.  Don’t get me wrong.  I’m in favor of enforcing immigration laws, but to lock a guy up for months on end without so much as a trial?  Awful.  We’re rooting for you, Perro.
10) Gabriel Rosado (10-10-78)
Last Fight: 6/1/2013- TKO9 #19 Sechew Powell
Next Fight: Unknown
11) Cory Spinks (7-27)
Last Fight: 6/30/2012- L (TKO7) vs. #3 Cornelius Bundrage
Next Fight: Unknown
Spinks failed to revenge his ugly 2010 TKO loss to Bundrage, but managed to look a little better and capture a round or two this time.
12) Sergey Rabchenko (7-7)
Last Fight: 6/16/2012- TKO7 #11 Ryan Rhodes
Next Fight: Unknown
Rabchenko is likely to defend his European title against France’s Cedric Vitu in his next fight.
13) Delvin Rodriguez (10-55)
Last Fight: 6/2/2012- L (UD12) vs. #12 Austin Trout
Next Fight: Unknown
14) Vanes Martirosyan (8-61)
Last Fight: 2/4/2012- TKO3 Troy Lowry (UNR)

Last Fight: 4/5/2012- TKO7 Salim Larbi (UNR)
Next Fight: 10/27/2012- vs. Zaurbek Baysangurov (UNR)
Konecny-Baysangurov will finally happen- October 27 in Kiev.
16) Carlos Quintana (8-13)
Last Fight: 5/5/2012- TKO6 Deandre Latimore (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Quintana said he wanted Canelo in the immediate aftermath of his upset TKO of Deandre Latimore, and has since expressed interest in Cotto and Trout, as well.
17) Ryan Rhodes (7-145)
Last Fight: 6/16/2012- L (TKO7) vs. Sergey Rabchenko (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Rhodes says he has no plans to retire after losing to Rabchenko.
18) Sechew Powell (7-124)
Last Fight: 6/1/2012- L (TKO9) vs. #10 Gabriel Rosado
Next Fight: Unknown
19) Brian Rose (7-35)
Last Fight: 6/2/2012- W* (UD12) vs. Kris Carslaw (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Rose’s reign as British Champion hasn’t been the greatest- partly due to limited available opposition, and partly due to his own awful performance against Carslaw.
20) Roberto Garcia (7-8)
Last Fight: 3/23/2012- UD10 Antwone Smith (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown

The Week Ahead: Atlanta plays host to an interesting little fight between Oklahoma gatekeeper Grady Brewer and gatekeeper-like journeyman Giorbis Barthelemy of Miami by way of Cuba.  Both men are getting up there in age, and both are coming off losses in their last significant fights.

Middleweight: 2013, Apr 22-28

Posted in Middleweight, Rankings with tags , , , , , , , on April 27, 2013 by danboxing
Saturday afternoon at Madison Square Garden, #18 Curtis Stevens was the beneficiary of a judging debacle on the Cunningham-Fury undercard.  You could probably have seen it coming, sadly, when the judges were announced.  John McKaie is, I feel confident in saying, the single worst judge in America, if not the world.  You can generally pick the true winner of the fight by choosing the guy that McKaie had losing.  It’s like the guy is testing the New York commission to see how many fights a judge can blatantly ruin before they stop hiring him.  Don Trella is very hit and miss, but at least he’s avoided embarrassing himself since his ludicrous Quillin-N’Dam card in October.  I was not particularly familiar with Robin Taylor’s work going into the fight, as he seldom works TV fights.  Naturally NBC’s commentary crew of BJ Flores, Kenny Rice, and silent partner Larry “Rubber Stamp” Hazzard tried to sell the public on the idea that Stevens was winning.  But for those of you that bought their ludicrous commentary, here’s what really happened:

Journeyman Derrick Findley came forward, consistently backing Stevens up and landing the better shots- particularly to the body.  Simply put, he was more aggressive, controlled the ring, and landed more and more telling shots.  Round-by-round, he clearly won the 2nd, 3rd, 5th, and 7th.  He clearly lost the 1st, 4th, and 6th.  The only difficult round to score was the 8th and final, which I narrowly gave to Findley to earn him a 77-75 edge.  Obviously if you were generous to Stevens, he may have eked out a draw.  But this is where the ringside crooks stepped in.  McKaie and Taylor each had it 78-74 for Stevens, meaning that in a short 8 round fight, they both gave Stevens the lone toss-up, as well as two clear Findley rounds.  That’s just another day at the office for McKaie, at least.  But Don Trella returned to Quillin-N’Dam form, throroughly embarrassing himself by giving Stevens all but one round.  Trella and Taylor need some major intervention and rehabilitation, and in my opinion should not work high-profile fights until they’ve proven themselves competent.  McKaie is a different matter.  He’s a consistent and flagrant offender, and should without any question never be allowed to judge a fight again under any circumstances.

A few hours later in Mexico City, undefeated prospect Gilberto Ramirez knocked out inexperienced low-level journeyman and late replacement Juan De Angel with a body shot in the latter half of the 3rd round.  Ramirez had been scheduled to fight comparatively top-notch journeyman Dionisio Miranda until that fight fell through.

Stevens tumbles from the top 20 with the awful performance, allowing the rather unworthy Jose Miguel Torres to claim the #20 spot on the strength of his upset win over undefeated prospect and fringe contender Patrick Majewski from November 2011.  He’s been slumming since then, and has a spotty prior record at lower weights, both factors which make me regret having to rank him at this stage.  What about Findley, you ask?  Well, two things.  He has a poor record prior to Saturday as a traveling opponent to often unproven or mediocre prospects and other fighters.  Also, he came in at 161 to Stevens’ 159, making it hard to give him full credit for a close win in the middleweight division.  He’s made me want to watch his fights going forward, but I can’t in good conscience consider ranking him.  The Japanese duo of Fuchigami and Ishida move up to 18 and 19, respectively.

Dan’s Top 20 (Weeks in Current Position-Weeks in Top 10 if applicable-Weeks in Top 20)
Champ: Sergio Martinez (158-158-158)
Last Fight: 9/15/2012- UD12 #4 Julio Cesar Chavez, Jr.
Next Fight: 4/27/2013- vs. #9 Martin Murray
Martinez will look to come back strong from knee surgery when he takes on Martin Murray in Argentina on April 27.  The fight will be revolutionary in that instant replay will be available to the referee.
1) Daniel Geale (96-201-201)
Last Fight: 1/30/2013- UD12 #11 Anthony Mundine
Next Fight: Unknown
With Soliman testing positive for a PED, his expected fight with Geale is probably out.  Perhaps a Sturm rematch is the most obvious follow-up.  Sergio has also expressed interest in a fight with him after Murray.
2) Felix Sturm (8-501-501)
Last Fight: 2/1/2013- L* (UD12) vs. #12 Sam Soliman (on PEDs)
Next Fight: Unknown
Sturm says on Twitter that he’s resumed light training, and will soon announce his plans for his next fight, which he describes as a big event.
3) Gennady Golovkin (8-34-97)
Last Fight: 3/30/2013- KO3 #19 Nobuhiro Ishida

Next Fight: 6/29/2013- vs. #4 Matthew Macklin
Golovkin-Macklin appears to be on for June 29 on HBO, and that’s huge.
4) Matthew Macklin (8-96-187)
Last Fight: 9/15/2012- TKO1 Joachim Alcine (UNR)
Next Fight: 6/29/2013- vs. #3 Gennady Golovkin
See Golovkin’s notes, above.
5) Julio Cesar Chavez, Jr. (8-99-117)
Last Fight: 9/15/2012- L (UD12) vs. Champ Sergio Martinez
Next Fight: 7/13/2013- vs. #17 Bryan Vera
Chavez has apparently settled on Bryan Vera for his next outing, which has been delayed to July 13.
6) Peter Quillin (8-27-48)
Last Fight: 10/20/2012- UD12 #6 Hassan N’Dam N’Jikam
Next Fight: 4/27/2013- vs. Fernando Guerrero (UNR)
Quillin’s fight with Guerrero has been postponed from February 9 to April 27 due to an injury to the card’s headliner, Danny Garcia.
7) Dmitry Pirog (8-143-143)
Last Fight: 5/1/2012- UD12 #20 Nobuhiro Ishida
Next Fight: Unknown
After bleak reports of his back injury situation surfaced over recent weeks, finally we get a bit of hopeful news, as Pirog’s US promoter Art Pelullo says that Pirog is hoping to return in late August if all goes well.
8) Grzegorz Proksa (8-106-106)
Last Fight: 2/9/2013- UD6 Norbert Szekeres (UNR)
Next Fight: 6/28/2013- vs. Unknown Opponent
Proksa will bounce back from a hand injury and return on June 28 in the US.  No further details yet.
9) Martin Murray (8-73-73)
Last Fight: 11/24/2012- TKO6 Jorge Navarro (UNR)
Next Fight: 4/27/2013- vs. Champ Sergio Martinez
Murray will look to prove that he belongs at or above the level he achieved by drawing with Sturm when he fights the Champ in Argentina on April 27.
10) Hassan N’Dam N’Jikam (8-8-130)
Last Fight: 10/20/2012- L (UD12) vs. #20 Peter Quillin
Next Fight: Unknown

N’Dam was recently seen sparring at Mayweather’s gym with some of his top prospects.  This has fueled speculation of his possibly signing with Mayweather Promotions, himself.
11) Marco Antonio Rubio (6-117)
Last Fight: 3/23/2013- UD12 Marcus Upshaw (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown

Rubio seems to be the mandatory for both the Quillin-Guerrero and the Martinez-Murray winner unless I’ve missed something.
12) Anthony Mundine (6-117)
Last Fight: 1/30/2013- L (UD12) vs. #1 Daniel Geale
Next Fight: Unknown
Mundine expects to fight again in late June or July, but doesn’t know against whom or in what division yet.  He has hinted he may be moving back down to 154.
13) Osumanu Adama (6-109)
Last Fight: 3/16/2012- W(SD10) vs. Grady Brewer (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Adama came in heavy and nearly lost to 42 year-old Grady Brewer.  The fact that he missed weight by only a half pound gives him the opportunity to schedule a middleweight fight by September 7 to maintain a ranking, though.
14) Darren Barker (7-80)
Last Fight: 3/9/2013- RTD4 Simone Rotolo (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
It appears that Barker has lost out to Bryan Vera for an opportunity to fight Chavez.
15) Max Bursak (7-117)
Last Fight: 2/2/2013- TKO3 Julien Marie Sainte (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Bursak is now the EBU champion after destroying journeyman Sainte.
16) Demetrius Andrade (7-88)
Last Fight: 1/25/2013- UD10 Freddy Hernandez (UNR) (at JMW)
Next Fight: 7/6/2013- vs. Zaurbek Baysangurov (UNR) (at JMW)
Andrade will finally have a significant fight at the 154 pound limit, as he challenges for the ridiculous title of Russia’s Zaurbek Baysangurov in either Kiev or Odessa in the Ukraine.
17) Bryan Vera (8-27)
Last Fight: 3/29/2013- TKO7* Donatas Bondorovas (UNR)
Next Fight: 7/13/2013- vs. #5 Julio Cesar Chavez, Jr.
After an absolutely abysmal performance from which he was lucky to escape without a loss against journeyman Donatas Bondas, Vera appears to be the choice to fight JCC on July 13.
18) Makoto Fuchigami (1-8)
Last Fight: 10/12/2012- RTD6 Marlon Alta (UNR)
Next Fight: 5/4/2013- vs. Akio Shibata (UNR)
Fuchigami has a good domestic-level opportunity on his hands, fighting essentially a peer in junior middleweight fringe contender Akio Shibata.
19) Nobuhiro Ishida (1-60)
Last Fight: 3/30/2013- L (KO3) vs. #3 Gennady Golovkin
Next Fight: Unknown
Ishida said before the Golovkin fight that he’d retire if he lost.  But that could have just been posturing.  I won’t remove him as a retired fighter until I find some post-fight confirmation of his intentions.
20) Jose Miguel Torres (1-1)
Last Fight: 3/16/2013- TKO4 Javier Gonzalez (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Torres sneaks into the rankings based on a nearly 18 month old upset win over Patrick Majewski, but considering the awful opposition he has faced since, I’m not particularly happy about it.

The Week Ahead: Five notable middleweights are in action this week in 3 separate fights.  The big one is the Championship fight between reigning Champ Sergio Martinez and promising Englishman Martin Murray (#9), who is best known for a draw with Felix Sturm that he easily could have won.  That fight will be televised on HBO in the US, and takes place in Buenos Aires, Argentina.  Murray is hardly the most daunting opponent Sergio has fought since beating Pavlik for the title, but there’s always a bit of added intrigue when a guy is coming off major knee surgery, especially a fighter that relies on mobility as much as Sergio.

In a competing card on Showtime from Brooklyn, #6 Peter Quillin takes on prospect/fringe contender Fernando Guerrero.  Guerrero has won 4 straight against limited opposition since his ill-fated foray into the junior middleweight division that saw him being stopped by Grady Brewer back in 2011.  Quillin fights for the first time since he dropped Hassan N’Dam 6 times and still barely eked out a win last year.

On that undercard, prospect Danny Jacobs looks to continue his comeback from cancer, still taking it easy in terms of his competition level.  His opponent is mediocre journeyman Keenan Collins.

Nothing to report from last week.

Dan’s Top 20
Champ: Andre Ward (71-205-205)
Last Fight: 9/8/2012- TKO10 LHW Champ Chad Dawson
Next Fight: Unknown
Ward is said to be planning a return for August.  He has expressed interest in fighting the Froch-Kessler or Bute-Pascal winner at some point.
1) Carl Froch (48-358-358)
Last Fight: 11/17/2012- KO3 LHW #11 Yusaf Mack
Next Fight: 5/25/2013- vs. #3 Mikkel Kessler
The deal is done.  Froch will get a rematch with Kessler on May 25 in London.
2) Robert Stieglitz (5-191-191)
Last Fight: 3/23/2013- TKO3 #2 Arthur Abraham
Next Fight: Unknown
After being blitzed by an uncharacteristically aggressive Stieglitz, Abraham has demanded a trilogy bout, which Stieglitz seems disposed to grant.  Sauerland also seems to be on board.
3) Mikkel Kessler (19-437-437)
Last Fight: 12/8/2012- TKO3 Brian Magee (UNR)
Next Fight: 5/25/2013- vs. #1 Carl Froch
See Froch’s notes, above.
4) Lucian Bute (35-367-367)
Last Fight: 11/3/2012- UD12 LHW #16 Denis Grachev (at LHW)
Next Fight: 5/25/2013- vs. LHW #3 Jean Pascal (at LHW)
Bute will be fighting Jean Pascal at light heavyweight in a huge Canadian event in May.  His super middleweight fight with Carl Froch was just a day shy of one year earlier, and thus Bute will probably be removed for inactivity at this weight the week after that fight unless he signs something immediately.
5) Arthur Abraham (5-183-183)
Last Fight: 3/23/2013- L (TKO3) vs. #5 Robert Stieglitz
Next Fight: Unknown
See Stieglitz’s notes above.
6) Thomas Oosthuizen (35-99-147)
Last Fight: 11/10/2012- UD12 Fulgencio Zuniga (UNR)
Next Fight: 6/29/2013- vs. Brandon Gonzales (UNR)
Oosthuizen will be fighting highly overrated and nominally “undefeated ” prospect Brandon Gonzales on the Golovkin-Macklin undercard.
7) Adonis Stevenson (28-72-72)
Last Fight: 3/22/2013- TKO6 Darnell Boone (UNR) (at LHW)
Next Fight: 6/8/2013- vs. LHW #1 Chad Dawson (at LHW)
After tending to unfinished business with the lowly Boone, Stevenson will now set sites on #1 light heavyweight Chad Dawson, who most outlets still consider the Champ.
8) George Groves (14-19-41)
Last Fight: 3/23/2013- TKO2 Baker Barakat (UNR) (at LHW)
Next Fight: 5/25/2013- vs. Noe Gonzalez (UNR)
Groves will fight Uruguayan gatekeeper Noe Gonzalez on the Froch-Kessler undercard.
9) Sakio Bika (8-10-316)
Last Fight: 2/16/2013- UD12 Nikola Sjekloca (UNR)
Next Fight: 6/8/2013- vs. Marco Antonio Periban (UNR)
Bika will fight undefeated Mexican Marco Antonio Periban in California on June 8 for the WBC belt that that organization just heisted from Andre Ward.
10) Anthony Dirrell (7-7-73)
Last Fight: 12/2/2011- TKO4 Renan St. Juste (UNR)
Next Fight: 5/3/2013- vs. Chris Wilson (UNR)
Dirrell will be back on May 3 against Chris Wilson, who I’ve never heard of.  I can’t even figure out which Chris Wilson it is, since there are several and since the fight is not on boxrec yet.
11) Will Rosinsky (7-45)
Last Fight: 12/19/2012- UD10 Otis Griffin (UNR) (at LHW)
Next Fight: Unknown
Rosinsky was all but set to fight Brandon Gonzales on Friday Night Fights, but Gonzales withdrew with a bad hamstring.  Sounds like Gonzales is moving on to a higher-reward opportunity with Oosthuizen.
12) Mouhamed Ali Ndiaye (7-76)
Last Fight: 3/23/2013- W (PTS6) vs. Jevgenijs Andrejevs (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Ndiaye did nothing other than stay busy against low-level Latvian Andrejevs.  But in fairness, he needed to do that.
13) Dimitri Sartison (7-147)
Last Fight: 1/27/2013- UD6 Artem Solomko (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
14) James DeGale (7-80)
Last Fight: 12/8/2012- UD12 Fulgencio Zuniga (UNR)
Next Fight: 5/17/2013- vs. Unknown Opponent
DeGale will be fighting in Quebec on May 17.  No opponent yet.  He was supposed to fight Alexander Brand before that fight was postponed.  It doesn’t sound like Brand will be his opponent this time, though.
15) Maxim Vlasov (4-24)
Last Fight: 12/30/2012- RTD7 Geard Ajetovic (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
16) Edwin Rodriguez (4-14)
Last Fight: 3/30/2013- W* (UD10) vs. #15 Ezequiel Maderna
Next Fight: 7/13/2013- vs. #16 LHW Denis Grachev (at LHW)
After getting the benefit of yet another questionable but not totally out-of-bounds decision against Maderna, Rodriguez remains in the mix, but kinda on the periphery of the division’s contenders.  He gets a chance at a million bucks against Grachev, who also arguably deserved to lose his first round fight.
17) Ezequiel Maderna (4-17)
Last Fight: 3/30/2013- L* (UD10) vs. #17 Edwin Rodriguez
Next Fight: Unknown
Maderna, despite arguably deserving a win against Rodriguez, did himself few favors in dropping the decision, especially considering how ugly the fight was.  I don’t imagine he’ll be getting too many international suitors anytime soon since he seems difficult to look good against.
18) Dyah Davis (7-9)
Last Fight: 6/2/2012- L (TKO10) vs. #9 Sakio Bika
Next Fight: Unknown
19) Don George (5-5)
Last Fight: 3/22/2013- Draw* (SD10) vs. David Lopez (should be win)
Next Fight: Unknown
George got robbed against Lopez, but gets credit for the win here (even if it was at a 163 catchweight).
20) Hadillah Mohoumadi (5-8)
Last Fight: 1/19/2013- UD10 Cedric Bellais (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Mohoumadi isn’t maybe the most obvious choice to be ranked, but he arguably beat DeGale (I thought he did better against him than Groves did) and by most accounts may have beaten Sjekloca, as well.

The Week Ahead: Nothing significant to report again this week.

#9 Nathan Cleverly finally fought his oft-delayed contest with Robin Krasniqi on Saturday in London.  Krasniqi entered as a two-loss top 50 fighter who probably still qualified as a prospect, considering those two losses both came at the very beginning of his career.  Now he’s more like a 3-loss gatekeeper.  Cleverly dominated the fight, losing at most a round or two when he got maybe a bit lazy in the middle rounds, but 2 of the judges quite reasonably scored it a shut.  It was basically seek and destroy in terms of tactics, pressuring and outpunching Krasniqi constantly.  The one negative aspect of his continuous and successful assault on Krasniqi, however, was that it revealed that his punching power is nothing special, since he hurt his man much less often than you might expect from how often he landed cleanly.

In the week’s other truly meaningful matchup, one-loss Kiwi prospect Robert Berridge stopped 2-loss prospect Serge Yannick of Melbourne by way of Cameroon to cap a very interesting fight in Footscray, Australia on Thursday.  The fight was very back and forth early, with the fighters evenly splitting the first 4 rounds on my card.  Yannick began to take over in the 4th, dominating round 5 to the point where Berridge looked discouraged.  But then Berridge began to reassert himself from behind, losing a very close call in the 6th on my card, and easily winning the 7th.  By the 8th, Yannick was starting to look a bit ragged- perhaps due to Berridge’s commitment to the body.  It was in this context that Berridge managed to catch Yannick trading with his hands down in the 8th, and dropped him heavily to the canvas.  Yannick stood at the count of 9, looking less than steady.  Referee Tony Marretta allowed the fight to continue, as Yannick got on his bike trying to wake his legs up.  Berridge tracked him down threw a heavy combination that landed entirely on the gloves, but managed to disturb the weakened Yannick’s balance enough to send him down for a second time.

That’s when Marretto screwed up.  He waved off the fight without a count, as if Yannick was either in need of medical attention, or as if there was some kind of two knockdown rule in effect.  Yannick blocked all the punches, so it’s impossible to conclude that he was incapable of defending himself.  Sure, he needed to lose a point for the knockdown, but that fight was not over at that point, and the fight would still have been close on the scorecards despite the 2 knockdowns.  I had Yannick up a point when the round began, and the announcers (no doubt partial to the adopted Australian Yannick) commented at, I believe, the beginning of the 7th round that Berridge actually needed a knockout.  Don’t get me wrong.  I think Berridge likely would have won, probably even by TKO or KO.  But the fight was not over.

In a lesser fight that was actually the main event of that particular card in Footscray,  undefeated prospect and prior Berridge conqueror Blake Caparello thoroughly dominated Uruguayan journeyman Jorge Rodriguez, winning every round on every card en route to a 12-round decision.

On the Cleverly undercard, used-up gatekeeper Enzo Maccarinelli stopped the awful Carl Wild late in the 6th and final round of their rather insignificant affair.

Berridge fails to make a serious play for the top 20, mainly because he loss to a rather unproven Caparello in the past.  Cleverly, however, makes a surprising move to #7.  Frankly his resume remains very weak in terms of the overall quality of his opposition.  Krasniqi is pretty much in line with the average of those opponents, but the overall volume of top 50 fighters he’s fought allows him to push past Cornelius White and Isaac Chilemba, who despite generally getting better marks on their resume when they do fight, have relatively little experience at the top 50 level in this division.  In comparing him to Chilemba, it was difficult to weight each man’s fight with Tony Bellew.  Despite the scorecards indicating otherwise, I thought that Chilemba pretty clearly beat Bellew while Cleverly pretty clearly lost to him.  In addition, Bellew was more highly-ranked when he fought Chilemba than when he fought Cleverly.  Ultimately Cleverly just had too many fights against gatekeepers and the like, and at some point they have to add up to a really good win or two.

Dan’s Top 20 (weeks in current position-weeks in top 10 (if applicable)-weeks in top 20)
Champ: Andre Ward (33-33-33)
Last Fight: 9/8/2012- TKO10 Champ Chad Dawson (at SMW)
Next Fight: Unknown
Ward is looking to return in August, and is reportedly thinking about fighting one of the winners of Kessler-Froch and Pascal-Bute, at least at some point.
1) Chad Dawson (33-360-360)
Last Fight: 9/8/2012- L(TKO10) vs. SMW Champ Andre Ward (at SMW)
Next Fight: 6/8/2013- vs. SMW #7 Adonis Stevenson
Dawson will fight Adonis Stevenson (who moves up from 168) on June 8 in Montreal.
2) Bernard Hopkins (33-359-359)
Last Fight: 3/9/2012- UD12 #6 Tavoris Cloud
Next Fight: 7/27/2013- vs. Karo Murat (UNR)
All the buzz had been revolving around a Hopkins-Cleverly showdown, but with little or no warning, he signed to fight his mandatory, the slightly more proven but inactive Karo Murat, instead.
3) Jean Pascal (33-201-201)
Last Fight: 12/14/2012- UD10 Alexei Kuziemski (UNR)
Next Fight: 5/25/2013- vs. #15 Lucian Bute
Pascal bailed on Dawson for a less internationally compelling fight with Lucian Bute on the same date.
4) Sergey Kovalev (14-14-14)
Last Fight: 1/19/2013- TKO3 #4 Gabriel Campillo
Next Fight: Unknown
5) Gabriel Campillo (14-148-148)
Last Fight: 1/19/2013- L(TKO3) vs. Sergey Kovalev (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
It remains to be seen whether we’ve seen Campillo rapidly decline, have a bad night, or just run into a world-beater.  But he’s still going to be highly ranked because he recently beat the guy ranked right below him.
6) Tavoris Cloud (14-191-191)
Last Fight: 3/9/2013- L (UD12) vs. #2 Bernard Hopkins
Next Fight: Unknown
Cloud’s manager expects him back in action by the end of the year.  Normally that wouldn’t be saying much, but that would be against type for Cloud.
7) Nathan Cleverly (1-168-168)
Last Fight: 4/20/2013- UD12 Robin Krasniqi (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Cleverly has beaten a lot of decent opponents, but we’re still waiting for him to take on a top guy.
8) Isaac Chilemba (1-4-64)
Last Fight: 3/30/2013- Draw* (SD12) vs. #9 Tony Bellew (should be win)
Next Fight: 5/25/2013- vs. #10 Tony Bellew
That didn’t take long!  Chilemba will rematch Bellew on the Froch-Kessler undercard in London, less than two months removed from getting borderline robbed the first time around.
9) Cornelius White (1-41-71)
Last Fight: 3/9/2013- UD8 Otis Griffin (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
White snuck in an under-the-radar 8-rounder against Otis Griffin.  It was a pound over the limit, but will buy him some more time to stay active at 175, at least.
10) Tony Bellew (4-80-80)
Last Fight: 3/30/2013- Draw* (SD12) vs. #13 Isaac Chilemba (should be loss)
Next Fight: 5/25/2013- vs. #7 Isaac Chilemba
See Chilemba’s notes, above.
11) Cedric Agnew (2-2)
Last Fight: 4/12/2013- UD12 #14 Yusaf Mack
Next Fight: Unknown
Agnew may have caught a fading Yusaf Mack at the right time, but he’s clearly a climber, having now beaten both Mack and Otis Griffin.
12) Jürgen Brähmer (2-53)
Last Fight: 2/2/2013- UD12 Eduard Gutknecht (UNR)
Next Fight: 4/27/2013- vs. Tony Averlant (UNR)
Braehmer defends his European title in Hamburg on April 27 against journeyman Tony Averlant.  Averlant so far only steps up when he fights for the European belt, having previously been robbed against then-beltholder Eddy Gutknecht, only to get beat by a journeyman himself.
13) Beibut Shumenov (2-148)
Last Fight: 6/2/2012- UD12 Enrique Ornelas (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
14) Andrzej Fonfara (2-41)
Last Fight: 11/16/2012- TKO7 Tommy Karpency (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Fonfara aggravated a previous injury to his right hand and had to withdraw from his ESPN2 fight with Nicholson Poulard.  He will hope that it heals on its own in a month, but if not he will need surgery that would keep him out for an additional 3-6 months.
15) Lucian Bute (3-25)
Last Fight: 11/3/2012- UD12 #16 Denis Grachev
Next Fight: 5/25/2013- vs. #3 Jean Pascal
Bute will look to prove what I have long believed- that the 168 pound division is much better man-for-man than 175, by fighting his larger peer in Montreal on May 25.
16) Denis Grachev (3-52)
Last Fight: 3/30/2013– W* (SD10) vs. Zsolt Erdei (UNR) (should be draw)
Next Fight: 7/13/2013- vs. SMW #16 Edwin Rodriguez
Grachev will be fighting Edwin Rodriguez at a catchweight of 171.5 in Monte Carlo for a million dollar prize.
17) Dmitri Sukhotski (3-130)
Last Fight: 12/8/2012- TKO1 Vladimir Borovsky (UNR)
Next Fight: 6/4/2013- vs. Mikhail Krinitsin
Sukhotski will fight in Barnaul, Russia on June 4 against low-level Kazakh journeyman Mikhail Krinitsin.
18) Eleider Alvarez (3-13)
Last Fight: 3/22/2013- TKO3 Nicholson Poulard (UNR)
Next Fight: 5/25/2013- vs. Unknown Opponent
Alvarez continues to stay busy, as he already has another fight scheduled for the Bute-Pascal undercard on May 25.  No opponent yet, though.
19) Yunieski Gonzalez (3-6)
Last Fight: 3/15/2013- KO8 Rowland Bryant (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Gonzalez took a huge step up in competition and made good, knocking out strong fringe contender Bryant.
20) Doudou Ngumbu (3-3)
Last Fight: 3/16/2013- UD12 #14 Vyacheslav Uzelkoff
Next Fight: Unknown

The Week Ahead: Saturday in Hamburg, #12 Juergen Braehmer takes on journeyman Tony Averlant, who was briefly ranked in the top 20 after getting robbed against the highly overrated Eduard Gutknecht, but resoundingly removed after getting beat by no-account journeyman Mounir Toumi.

Cruiserweight: 2013: Apr 22-28

Posted in Cruiserweight, Rankings with tags , , , , , , , on April 24, 2013 by danboxing
This week played host to several notable fights, but with no surprises or sea changes involved.

British titlist Jon Lewis Dickinson successfully defended his title in Sunderland, England on Friday, winning what appears to have been a pretty average decision over unproven one-loss prospect Mike Stafford, finishing strong to make the decision unanimous despite the close 115-113 card of John Keane.

Finnish gatekeeper Juho Haapoja make quick work of low-level Italian journeyman Michele De Meo, stopping his man at 2:34 of the first round in Tampere, Finland.

Undefeated fringe contending Polish prospect Krzysztof Glowacki dropped inexperienced and unproven one-loss Gabon prospect Taylor Mabika once en route to a decision win in Rsezsow, Poland.  According to two of the theoretically friendly local judges, though, he lost a couple rounds.  Not really an overwhelmingly impressive performance.  On the same card, fellow Polish unbeaten Pawel Kolodziej looked a little better.  He also dropped his opponent- the more proven veteran journeyman Richard Hall- but also dominated the scorecards with 3 clean shutouts.

No changes to the rankings.

Dan’s Top 20 (weeks in current position-weeks in top 10 (if applicable)-weeks in top 20)
Champ: None
1) Denis Lebedev (32-168-168)
Last Fight: 12/17/2012- KO4 Santander Silgado (UNR)
Next Fight: 5/17/2013- vs. Guillermo Jones (UNR)
Lebedev will be fighting inactive titlist Guillermo Jones near Moscow on May 17.
2) Yoan Pablo Hernandez (32-148-148)
Last Fight: 9/15/2012- W*(UD12) vs. #20 Troy Ross
Next Fight: Unknown
Hernandez pulled out of his scheduled 2/2 fight with Eric Fields with a fractured hand.
3) Troy Ross (32-32-64)
Last Fight: 9/15/2012- L*(UD12) vs. #1 Yoan Pablo Hernandez
Next Fight: Unknown
Quote from Ross’s Twitter: “If the right opportunity arises I will fight again.”  That sounds more like a semi-retired fighter than the guy that just outfought the division’s #1 contender.  Here’s hoping he starts hunting for good fights like a starving mountain man any second now.
4) Ola Afolabi (11-215-215)
Last Fight: 5/5/2012- Draw* (MD12) vs. #4 Marco Huck
Next Fight: Unknown Date- vs. #7 Marco Huck
Sauerland is now promoting the Huck-Afolabi trilogy match after Don King botched it.
5) Krzysztof Wlodarczyk (11-409-409)
Last Fight: 9/22/2012- UD12 #13 Francisco Palacios
Next Fight: 6/22/2013- vs. Rakhim Chakhkiev (UNR)
Apparently an agreement has been reached for Wlodarczyk to fight undefeated and fringe-contending Russian Olympian Rakhim Chakhkiev in Moscow, June 22.  Wlodarczyk will reportedly have a rematch clause in the event he loses.
6) Firat Arslan (11-50-93)
Last Fight: 11/3/2012- L*(UD12) vs. #5 Marco Huck (Robbery)
Next Fight: 4/27/2013- vs. Varol Vekiloglu (UNR)
Arslan’s first fight under the Sauerland banner is unfortunately a waste of time, as he will fight lower-mid-level German journeyman Varol Vekiloglu.  Too bad.  At 42, it’s hard not tho think that every fight he takes outside the top level is seriously damaging his chances of getting to the very top of the division.
7) Marco Huck (11-333-333)
Last Fight: 11/3/2012- W*(UD12) vs. #10 Firat Arslan (Robbery)
Next Fight: Unknown Date- vs. #4 Ola Afolabi
See Afolabi’s notes, above.
8) Lateef Kayode (11-47-127)
Last Fight: 6/2/2012- Draw (SD12) vs. ‘Roided up #3 Antonio Tarver
Next Fight: Unknown
All indications are that Kayode will next fight at heavyweight, but the plan to get him in the ring in February obviously didn’t work.
9) Danny Green (11-24-177)
Last Fight: 11/21/2012- UD12 Shane Cameron (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
As has been the case after every fight since he had very serious surgery a couple years ago, there is speculation that Green may retire following his win over Shane Cameron.  Green himself remains non-committal.
10) B.J. Flores (11-11-148)
Last Fight: 10/6/2012- TKO2 David McNemar (UNR)
Next Fight: 5/25/2013- vs. Nuri Seferi (UNR)
Don King’s embarrassing failure to make the Huck-Afolabi card happen has claimed Flores-Palacios as collateral damage.  Flores instead will be fighting a couple weeks later against Albanian gatekeeper Nuri Seferi, in Albania.
11) Giacobbe Fragomeni (11-232)
Last Fight: 12/15/2012- W*(SD12) vs. #13 Silvio Branco
Next Fight: Unknown
After limping to back-to-back tossup fights with the painfully old Silvio Branco, Fragomeni is now looking to step up to what would have to be seen as a cash-out trilogy fight with the much better Krzysztof Wlodarczyk.
12) Silvio Branco (11-58)
Last Fight: 12/15/2012- L*(SD12) vs. #12 Giacobbe Fragomeni
Next Fight: Unknown
Branco can still hang with whippersnappers like 43 year-old countryman Fragomeni, but you’ve gotta think his active days are numbered at 46.
13) Alexander Alekseev (9-119)
Last Fight: 2/22/2013- UD12* Garrett Wilson (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Alekseev barely squeaked by after building an early lead against Wilson, but it’s still an improvement from his previous fight.
14) Mateusz Masternak (9-56)
Last Fight: 4/13/2013- TKO9 Sean Corbin (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Masternak’s scheduled meeting with Jeremy Ouanna gave way to an even less impressive match-up against Sean Corbin, a mediocre Guyana journeyman best known for beating a totally shot Wayne Braithwaite after being inactive for 2 years.
15) Francisco Palacios (9-108)
Last Fight: 9/22/2012- L(UD12) vs. #7 Krzysztof Wlodarczyk
Next Fight: Unknown
Okay so maybe this was me and maybe it wasn’t.  But about a week ago I tweeted to Palacios after Flores pulled out on him that Eddie Chambers is looking for a cruiserweight fight.  Chambers re-tweeted it, and now the two both seem extremely interested in making it happen.  If it actually happens, I must say I’ll view that fight as my baby, whether justified or not.
16) Thabiso Mchunu (11-24)
Last Fight: 11/10/2012- TKO5 #20 Danie Venter
Next Fight: Unknown
The promoter of Congolese prospect Ilunga Makabu has offered to fight Mchunu, but reportedly met with tepid interest from Mchunu’s camp.
17) Dmytro Kucher (11-43)
Last Fight: 3/21/2013- UD12 Julio Cesar Dos Santos (UNR)
Next Fight: 5/17/2013- vs. Unknown Opponent
Kucher will be figthing on May 17 just outside of Moscow.  No opponent yet.
18) Enad Licina (11-148)
Last Fight: 11/10/2012- TKO2 Koeksal Orduhan
Next Fight: Unknown
19) Grigory Drozd (11-24)
Last Fight: 12/17/2012- UD12 Jean-Marc Monrose (UNR)
Next Fight: 6/8/2013- vs. Unknown Opponent
Drozd will apparently be fighting in an unpronounceable Russian town in early June, but no opponent has been named yet.  He suffered a hand injury in his last fight, and is on the shelf from training until April.
20) Pawel Glazewski (11-11)
Last Fight: 2/23/2013- UD10 Bartlomiej Grafka (UNR)
Next Fight: 6/29/2013- vs. Unknown Opponent
Glazewski returns in late June in Ostroda, Poland.  Probably more or less at light heavyweight.

THE WEEK AHEAD: A couple likely mismatches populate the landscape over the weekend.  In the most egregious of the two, #6 Firat Arslan headlines a less-than-scintillating fight between two Germans of Turkish descent, when he pounds on lower mid-level journeyman Varol Vekiloglu in Hamburg.

Sunday in Melbourne, Australia, gatekeeper Daniel Ammann steps in with local mediocre prospect Kane Watts.

Heavyweight: 2013, Apr 22-28

Posted in Heavyweight, Rankings with tags , , , , , , , on April 24, 2013 by danboxing
In by far the week’s biggest fight at heavyweight, #6 Tyson Fury scored a dramatic (and somewhat dirty) come-from-behind knockout victory over undersized #3 Steve Cunningham at Madison Square Garden. Cunningham started off in fine form, dropping the gigantic Fury heavily in the 2nd en route to sweeping the first 4 rounds on my card.  But around the 5th round, Fury’s sheer size and roughhouse tactics seemed to take their toll on Cunningham’s conditioning, as Fury edged the 5th (aside from a point deduction for use of his head inside) and the 6th, as Cunningham became noticeably less elusive.  Fury then managed to hurt Cunningham in the 7th and pin him against the ropes.  At that point, he shoved his forearm into Cunningham’s face to ensure that he wouldn’t be able to see the big right hand that ended the night.  It wasn’t always pretty from Fury, but in the end it turned out to be plenty effective.  The same can not be said of his random decision to butcher the country classic “Keep it Between the Lines” by Ricky Van Shelton while addressing the crowd post-fight.

Just about an hour or two later, and across the pond in London, #9 Dereck Chisora sleepwalked his way to a snoozer of a 9th round TKO over journeyman and former Argentine Cruiserweight Champ Hector Avila.  Avila was content to hold and slow the pace, as he was even less in shape than the moderately fat Chisora.  Chisora, for his part, seemed content to throw one punch at a time more often than not, several committing to any really hard punches or combinations that might have made Avila’s night a little more difficult.  But ultimately Avila did sort of fold just when it looked like he might torture the viewer further by surviving to the final bell.

Undefeated Polish prospect Artur Szpilka was in action in his home country, getting a short night’s work when his opponent, journeyman Taras Bidenko, retired on his stool with an injury at the start of the 2nd round.

And finally, Russian gatekeeper Alexander Ustinov cruised to a shutout decision over 8 rounds with Croatian journeyman Ivica Perkovic, whose lone claim to fame was dropping Ustinov’s fellow Kubrat Pulev victim Alexander Dimitrenko hard in their recent fight.

Fury advances to #2 with the win.  Simply put, nobody else but the Klitschkos and Cunningham himself has beaten a fighter ranked as highly as #3 in the last five years.  Despite a short resume at heavyweight, Cunningham still only falls to #5, as he can’t possibly dip below the man he clearly beat last time out in Tomasz Adamek.

Dan’s Top 20 (Weeks in current position-weeks in top 10 (if applicable)-weeks in top 20)
Champ: Wladimir Klitschko (200-413-413)
1) Vitali Klitschko (237-237-237)
Last Fight: 9/8/2012- TKO4 Manuel Charr (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
After speculation went wild over a Daily Beast article that seemed to be hinting at an impending retirement announcement, Vitali seems to have every intention of continuing his career.  He says he may eventually fight David Haye, but implies he would at least fight his mandatory challenger (the Stiverne-Arreola winner) first.
2) Tyson Fury (1-92-92)
Last Fight: 4/20/2013- KO7 #3 Steve Cunningham
Next Fight: Unknown
Fury is now suddenly the most proven heavyweight not named Klitschko, and will likely get a chance to add to his resume against Kubrat Pulev next, as an eliminator for Wlad in the IBF.
3) David Haye (1-41-41)
Last Fight: 7/14/2012- TKO5 #6 Dereck Chisora
Next Fight: 6/29/2013- vs. Unknown Opponent
Haye’s initially-announced July fight has been moved up to the end of June, and Eddie Chambers and especially Kubrat Pulev seem to be possibilities.
4) Alexander Povetkin (41-287-287)
Last Fight: 9/29/2012- TKO2 Hasim Rahman (UNR)
Next Fight: 5/17/2013- vs. Andrzej Wawrzyk (UNR)
Povetkin is set to fight mediocre-looking undefeated Polish prospect Andrzej Wawrzyk in Moscow, on the Lebedev-Jones undercard.
5) Steve Cunningham (1-18-18)
Last Fight: 4/20/2013- L (KO7) vs. #6 Tyson Fury
Next Fight: Unknown
Only time will tell where Cunningham goes form here.  His hopes for a title shot are dashed at least for awhile.  Perhaps a trilogy with Adamek would make sense at this point.
6Tomasz Adamek (1-157-157)
Last Fight: 12/22/2012- W (SD12)* vs. CW #4 Steve Cunningham (Robbery)
Next Fight: Unknown
Word is that Adamek will likely be fighting still relatively unproven Newark prospect Joe Hanks on June 14 in that town that they both currently call home.
7) Eddie Chambers (18-45-45)
Last Fight: 6/16/2012- L(UD12) vs. #3 Tomasz Adamek
Next Fight: Unknown
Chambers’ very active twitter continues to reference David Haye a lot, but the tone has noticeably shifted from “come on and fight me David Haye” to “Haye is ducking Chambers.”  It seems that nobody decent wants to fight Chambers.
8) Kubrat Pulev (18-51-128)
Last Fight: 9/29/2012- KO11 Alexander Ustinov (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Pulev says he’s negotiating to be David Haye’s 6/29 opponent.
9) Dereck Chisora (18-73-136)
Last Fight: 4/20/2013- TKO9 Hector Avila (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Chisora put on a world-class snoozer against Avila, but still managed to bag a late stoppage.
10) Odlanier Solis (5-5-152)
Last Fight: 3/22/2013- UD12 Leif Larsen (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Solis’ promoter wants to get him back in the ring within 3 months after the Larsen fight.
11) Johnathon Banks (5-23)
Last Fight: 11/17/2012- TKO2 #11 Seth Mitchell
Next Fight: 6/22/2013- vs. Seth Mitchell (UNR)
The Mitchell rematch- postponed due to a broken thumb by Banks- has been reset for the Malignaggi-Broner undercard on June 22.
12) Tony Thompson (8-152)
Last Fight: 2/23/2013- TKO2 David Price (UNR)
Next Fight: 7/6/2013- vs. David Price (UNR)
After originally saying he’d only fight David Price in a rematch if Price came to the US, Thompson has instead agreed to fight in Price’s Liverpool backyard again.
13) Robert Helenius (8-152)
Last Fight: 3/23/2013- W*(UD10) vs. Michael Sprott (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Helenius’ team confirms another hand injury.  They say it will take 6 weeks to heal, despite rumors that it is more serious.
14) Alexander Dimitrenko (8-119)
Last Fight: 3/9/2013- UD8 Ivica Perkovic (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Dimitrenko’s future is in doubt after he struggled mightily to survive a heavy knockdown and outpoint typically inept journeyman Ivica Perkovic.
15) Chris Arreola (8-214)
Last Fight: 2/18/2012- KO1 Eric Molina (UNR)
Next Fight: 4/27/2013- vs. #19 Bermane Stiverne (UNR)
The Stiverne fight is once again on the schedule, this time for April 27.
16) Denis Boytsov (8-201)
Last Fight: 2/15/2013- UD8 Samir Kurtagic (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Boytsov appears to have won the battle of wills with Universum over whether he gets to fight or not.  Now the trick will be getting him in against worthwhile opposition.
17) Vyacheslav Glazkov (8-18)
Last Fight: 2/23/2013- Draw* (SD10) vs. Malik Scott (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Glazkov got the benefit of the doubt in every close round from two of the judges against Scott.  It was just about as close to a robbery as you can get without me calling it that.
18) Malik Scott (8-9)
Last Fight: 2/23/2013- Draw* (SD10) vs. #19 Vyacheslav Glazkov
Next Fight: Unknown
Scott is in Moscow at last check, sparring with Povetkin and Lebedev.
19) Bermane Stiverne (8-8)
Last Fight: 4/14/2012- vs. Willie Herring (UNR)
Next Fight: 4/27/2013- vs. #15 Chris Arreola
See Arreola’s notes, above.
20) Franklin Lawrence (8-8)
Last Fight: 1/25/2013- Mark Brown (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown
Lawrence reportedly pulled out of a planned (and very good) crossroads fight with prospect Bryant Jennings.

THE WEEK AHEAD: Several fights to talk about this week.  The likely most significant one is Saturday in Ontario, CA, where #15 Chris Arreola meets #19 Bermane Stiverne in a long-planned battle to determine Vitali Klitschko’s mandatory- or possibly his successor should he elect to retire.

On the undercard for that one, Connecticut gatekeeper Tony Grano takes on Texas journeyman Eric Molina for the right the be vastly overrated by the IBF.

Another pretty significant tilt can be found in Sheffield, England, as undefeated prospect and 2008 Olympic medalist Deontay Wilder fights the toughest opponent of his career in the resurgent Brit Audley Harrison. Harrison had descended well into journeyman status before winning the Prizefighter tournament out of what on paper looked like a pretty good field, though his exact draw was not as good as you’d have thought going in.  The victory in the one-night tournament qualified him as a top-25 fringe contender once again, which means on paper he’ll be a huge step up for Wilder, who still has yet to fight even a legitimate top 50 opponent.

On the Martinez-Murray undercard in Buenos Aires, undefeated Oxnard, CA-based Russian prospect Magomed Abdusalamov takes on Argentina’s own Sebastian Ceballos, a serviceable career journeyman who has thrice popped up as a failed contender for that country’s national title.  In one of those “only in boxing” quirks we’re so used to, this fight will somehow be for the WBC’s USA title, even though neither fighter is native to the US, and even though Ceballos in particular still lives in Argentina and has never even fought stateside.

Finally, former undefeated Vitali Klitschko opponent Kevin Johnson of Georgia- now barely in the top 50 and seemingly in rapid decline for about a year or so now- will continue his 2 year-long road show, fighting solid one-loss, Sydney-based Kiwi prospect Solomon Haumono in Melbourne, Australia on Sunday.
